The Philadelphia Eagles earned a lopsided 40-22 win in Super Bowl 59 over the two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs.

The Eagles led 24-0 at halftime, the biggest halftime deficit of quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ career, and did not let up in the second half. They pushed it to 34-0 before the Chiefs finally got on the board in final minute of the third quarter.

It was a dominant performance by the Eagles defense. The Chiefs offense managed just 23 yards and one first down in the first half and they sacked Mahomes six times and forced three turnovers.

Lopsided scores is relatively common in the Super Bowl. Historically, there have been more blowouts in Super Bowl history (wins by 17 or more points) than close games (wins by four points or less). This Eagles win belongs in the former category with a 18-point margin.

The 2025 Super Bowl did not make the top five biggest blowouts in NFL history, thanks to multiple late scores by the Chiefs. It’s the second-biggest margin of victory in the last decade behind Super Bowl 55, when Tampa Bay won 31-9 over Kansas City.

Expert Super Bowl picks: Unique betting insights only at USA TODAY.

Here are the five biggest blowouts in Super Bowl history:

Biggest blowouts in Super Bowl history

1. Super Bowl 24: San Francisco 55, Denver 10 (45 points)

The 49ers needed a fourth-quarter comeback to win Super Bowl 23 a year prior over the Cincinnati Bengals. That wasn’t the case a year later against John Elway and the Broncos. Super Bowl MVP Joe Montana completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and five touchdowns, three to Jerry Rice. The 55 points San Francisco scored remains a Super Bowl record.

2. Super Bowl 20: Chicago 46, New England 10 (36 points)

The infamous 1985 Chicago Bears defense capped off an incredible regular season with a dominant display in the Super Bowl. The Patriots took a 3-0 lead, but the Bears scored 44 unanswered to take the biggest win in Super Bowl history at the time.

3. Super Bowl 27: Dallas 52, Buffalo 17 (35 points)

The first of back-to-back Cowboys-Bills Super Bowls saw Dallas come the closest to breaking San Francisco’s points record. After the first quarter, Dallas turned on the scoring behind Super Bowl MVP Troy Aikman’s 273 passing yards and four touchdowns.

4. Super Bowl 48: Seattle 43, Denver 8 (35 points)

Seattle shut down the No. 1 scoring offense in the league on the biggest stage. The Seahawks broke a Super Bowl record by taking the largest shutout lead in the game’s history at 36-0. A Broncos touchdown as the third quarter expired avoided the first Super Bowl shutout in NFL history.

5. Super Bowl 22: Washington 42, Denver 10 (32 points)

Denver took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter but failed to keep up after that. Washington threw and ran all over the Broncos defense as Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams completed 18 of 29 passes for 340 yards and four touchdowns. Running back Timmy Smith added 204 yards and a touchdown on just 22 carries.

Has there ever been a shutout in the Super Bowl?

No. The fewest points scored by a team in Super Bowl history is three and that’s happened twice.

The Miami Dolphins lost to the Dallas Cowboys 24-3 in Super Bowl 6 back in 1972 and the Los Angeles Rams lost to the New England Patriots 13-3 in Super Bowl 53 in 2019.

Serena Williams made sure to turn out for the Super Bowl halftime show and show they ‘Not Like Us.’

Although she was born in Michigan, Williams crew up in Compton, California, the same town as halftime performer Kendrick Lamar is from. With Lamar headlining one of the biggest performances in television, the Grammy-award winning rapper made sure to have his fellow Compton-native turn up with him for the show.

As Lamar performed his hit diss track ‘Not Like Us,’ Williams was on the stage, of course doing the signature crip walk heavily featured in the music video for the song.

It’s been known Williams has appreciation for the hit song. At the 2024 ESPY Awards, which she hosted, she danced to ‘Not Like Us’ during the show and also took some shots at Drake, who the song is directed at.

‘If I’ve learned anything this year, it’s that none of us should ever pick a fight with Kendrick Lamar,’ she said. ‘He will make your hometown not like you, the next time Drake sits courtside at a Raptors game, they’re gonna Forest Gump him, seats taken.’

Williams wasn’t the only star that joined in on the halftime show, as actor Samuel L. Jackson served as a narrator during the show, and singer SZA also sang alongside Kendrick.

Serena Williams comments on Super Bowl halftime show

Williams posted a video on social media saying ‘I did not crip walk like Wimbledon, oh I would’ve been fined.’ She also shared another video of her outfit during the performance.

Plenty of people were surprised to see Williams dancing, but it’s safe to say they were hyped when she popped up.

Cooper DeJean joined Saquon Barkley as one of two Philadelphia Eagles players celebrating their birthdays during the team’s Super Bowl 59 matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs.

DeJean beat Barkley in becoming the first player in Super Bowl history to score a touchdown on his birthday.

The 22-year-old rookie got his first score midway through the second quarter. The Iowa product intercepted Patrick Mahomes after the veteran quarterback launched a third-and-16 over the middle of the field while rolling out.

DeJean stepped in front of it with ease, and used his sped and elusiveness to weave through the Kansas City offense for a 38-yard score.

DeJean’s touchdown, and Jake Elliott’s ensuing extra point, extended Philadelphia’s lead to 17-0.

The Chiefs have trailed by doubled figures in all four of Mahomes’ previous Super Bowl appearances. They have posted a 3-1 record in those contests, with the lone loss being a 31-9 blowout in Super Bowl 55 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

NEW ORLEANS It appears Kendrick Lamar had more than one special guest during his Super Bowl 59 halftime show performance.

As Lamar closed out his performance with his hit single ‘tv off,’ a man dressed in black went rogue on stage and waved around a Palestinian flag as he ran around the set. The protestor stood atop a black lowrider vehicle that Lamar opened his performance on and moved toward the 50-yard-line before he was tackled to the group by security.

It’s not clear if the man was part of Lamar’s performance, which included dozens of dancers dressed in similar clothing. The protestor was handcuffed and escorted off the field by at least five officers.

Lamar was joined by SZA, Samuel L. Jackson and Serena Williams during his halftime show.

NEW ORLEANS – Saquon Barkley’s landmark season now has an added distinction.

The Philadelphia Eagles’ All-Pro running back and NFL’s newly crowned Offensive Player of the Year broke Hall of Famer Terrell Davis’ record for most rushing yards in a season – postseason included – Sunday during Super Bowl 59 against the Kansas City Chiefs. Barkley’s 2-run in the second quarter moved him ahead of Davis, who ran for 2,476 yards in 19 games (three in the playoffs) for the 1998 Denver Broncos, who won Super Bowl 33. The Super Bowl is Barkley’s 20th appearance of the 2024 campaign.

Prior to this season, Davis had the top two full-season totals, producing 2,331 yards on the ground in 1997 (also in 19 games), when Denver won Super Bowl 32. He was the MVP of that game after rushing for a Super Sunday record three touchdowns among his 157 yards.

Barkley, who has a record seven touchdown runs of at least 60 yards this season (playoffs included), rushed for 2,005 yards in 16 regular-season games, the ninth time in NFL history the 2,000 yard plateau was reached by a running back. He sat out Philadelphia’s Week 18 game – the Eagles had nothing to gain in terms of playoff positioning in the regular-season finale – rather than trying to break Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson’s single-season record of 2,105 yards, achieved over 16 games in 1984.

Davis rushed for 2,008 yards in 1998.

All things Eagles: Latest Philadelphia Eagles news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Barkley is also within striking distance of another mark. He need to gain 169 yards on the ground in the Super Bowl to break John Riggins’ record for the most (610) in a single postseason. Riggins racked up his total over four games during the 1982 playoffs, which followed a season curtailed to nine games by a players strike.

Overtaking Riggins would mean another record for Barkley, who’s currently in a four-way tie with Davis (who did it twice) and Hall of Famer Barry Sanders with 14 games, postseason included, with at least 100 rushing yards in a single season.

Yeah, an American football.

Messi, the Inter Miami star and Argentine World Cup champion, was featured in a post-Super Bowl film by Apple TV on Sunday night – reminding sports fans about the upcoming soccer season.

Messi is seen dribbling a football like a soccer ball, before a grand finale of kicking the football through a goal post with the catchphrase: “When football ends, fútbol begins.”

Messi, Apple TV, Major League Soccer, Inter Miami and Royal Caribbean wasted no time sharing their campaign as the NFL’s season came to an end.

The MLS season begins with Messi and Inter Miami playing in the first game of the season on Feb. 22 against New York City FC. All MLS games are available on MLS Season Pass from Apple TV.

SHOP: Get the latest Messi and Inter Miami team gear from the MLS Store

Messi attended Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans, watching the Philadelphia Eagles dismantle the Kansas City Chiefs, along with his fellow Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, and their children.

Messi’s oldest son, Thiago, wore a Jalen Hurts Eagles jersey at the game, while his two youngest sons wore Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs jerseys.

Messi’s newest Inter Miami jersey – a two-toned, pink home kit nicknamed Euforia – was also prominent in the promotional video.

The light and easy pink, striped two-toned design is reminiscent of Argentina’s World Cup-winning jerseys, which will surely attract Messi’s legion of fans worldwide.

Royal Caribbean remains as Inter Miami’s official jersey partner, while the jersey also features sleek black accents.

The jersey celebrates Inter Miami’s continued rise in Major League Soccer and the international stage. It will be worn for the 2025 and 2026 seasons.

Messi and Inter Miami will compete in the FIFA Club World Cup this summer, among several tournaments during the 2025 MLS season. Inter Miami also plans to open a new stadium, Miami Freedom Park, in 2026.

Beginning Feb. 12, Inter Miami’s new jersey will available on MLSstore.com, adidas.com, and at Inter Miami’s team stores inside Miami International Airport and at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Royal Caribbean will also have the jersey available for purchase on their ships.

Inter Miami’s new jersey was first unveiled when club co-owners Jorge and Jose Mas presented Argentine president Javier Milei with one autographed by Messi during a trip to the country last week.

MLS, Inter Miami, adidas and retailers have enjoyed massive jersey sales since the Argentine World Cup champion and eight-time Ballon d’Or winner joined the league in July 2023.

Messi had the league’s top selling jersey in 2023 and 2024. He continues to rank No. 1 globally for adidas in jersey sales of individual players.

Inter Miami’s retro-inspired third kit – a teal and orange jersey drawing comparison to the NFL’s Miami Dolphins colorway – was the fastest selling jersey in league history. It recorded the most sales in the first day, week, and month of any newly launched jersey in MLSstore.com history.

Messi, 37, won MLS MVP after helping Inter Miami win the Supporters’ Shield and set the league record for most regular season points (74) last year.

Messi is under contract with Inter Miami through the 2025 MLS season. He has not yet declared to play for Argentina in the 2026 World Cup hosted in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The Super Bowl isn’t just for the teams on the field.

It’s also the big game for the companies looking to advertise and even the graphics departments at the networks. This year, Fox is continuing the tradition of debuting a new look for the NFL at the Super Bowl.

The scoreboard, or scorebug as it’s commonly referred, has been the time when broadcasters like to reveal a new look for the game to give it a bigger feel.

After making headlines for their cartoon-inspired scorebug at the Super Bowl two years ago, the network is taking a more minimalistic, old-school approach this time around.

Change can be difficult, especially when there was seemingly nothing wrong with the other graphic that just turned two years old.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

It is a bit jarring at first sight. There are too many boxes with fonts that are too big and bold. For it’s minimalistic intentions, the scorebug is very in-your-face and distracts from the game on the screen.

Perhaps adding a background would help, but the distracting nature leaves much too be desired in a game this big.

Needless to say, fans were not fond of the update.

For reference, here’s a look at every scorebug in NFL on Fox history.

Based on the early reviews, this one might end up ranking as the worst.

What’s next for Aaron Rodgers?

It’s not yet clear whether the four-time NFL MVP wants to continue on with his playing career. What is certain, however, is that remaining with the New York Jets for another season is no longer an option, as the team informed him of its plans to move on, according to multiple reports on Sunday.

That likely leaves the mercurial signal-caller with a limited set of options as he comes off a rocky season in which he showed both his age, 41, and the effects of his 2023 torn Achilles. But with demand always outpacing supply when it comes to quarterback solutions on the open market, there still could be opportunities for Rodgers if he chooses to play another year.

Here are six of the top potential landing spots for Rodgers:

Pittsburgh Steelers

From Rodgers’ perspective, there’s probably no more ideal landing spot. The Steelers are the only playoff outfit from 2024 that appears willing to entertain an external option behind center after flaming out with a five-game losing streak to end the season. Working under Mike Tomlin, whom he has openly lauded, would provide him a sharp pivot from the absurdities that seemed unending for the Jets last season. Above all, it would be perhaps his best shot at redefining the end of his career by playing for a stable contender.

But would Tomlin go for this? It’s unclear how much upside there would be for Pittsburgh given Rodgers’ uneven level of play last season, and the culture fit is certainly an unknown. And it could be difficult for Tomlin, Rodgers and offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to find common ground on just how the attack should function, with the quarterback having grown accustomed to getting his way in determining the shape of an offense. Tomlin seemed to underline a sense of urgency in making the right personnel choices this season after yet another postseason disappointment, and Pittsburgh would have to be comfortable that Rodgers is worth the gamble.

Tennessee Titans

Despite holding the No. 1 pick and enduring Will Levis’ 18 turnovers last season, the Titans don’t look to be locked into taking a quarterback to kick off Year 2 of coach Brian Callahan’s tenure. Maybe that’s driven by what’s perceived to be an underwhelming class at the position, with Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders the only two surefire first-rounders – and neither seeming to spark the kind of frenzy that their 2024 counterparts did. Titans president of football operations Chad Brinker emphasized that the team wouldn’t force a pick at the position, saying the organization ‘won’t pass on a generational talent at the top of the draft.’

Tennessee’s plan, however, should crystallize in free agency. If the team wants to look elsewhere with the top pick – or auction it off – it likely needs to sign an established option as an alternative to Levis. Rodgers could be the kind of discerning and savvy presence that Callahan might covet, though putting him behind a line that surrendered 52 sacks could be a dicey proposition. Yet he could help Tennessee become more competitive quickly within the fluid AFC South while staving off a long-term commitment for at least another year.

New York Giants

Coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen might be hard pressed to pin their livelihoods to turning things around with Rodgers. But the Giants might need a bridge quarterback in free agency, and Rodgers might be as good of an option as any if he can get on board with his role. The fit could be tough, but Rodgers could funnel targets to Malik Nabers while giving New York a legitimate shot of evaluating its offensive pieces while keeping its potential signal-caller selection at No. 3 out of a bad development trajectory.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Silver and Black are one of the few teams that would get a clear upgrade over their incumbent passers by signing Rodgers. Yet owner Mark Davis has made it clear he wants a quarterback to guide the Raiders for the foreseeable future, and Rodgers is little more than a short-term patch at this point in his career. Las Vegas also might have limited appeal to Rodgers, who likely didn’t get glowing reviews of the franchise from close friend Davante Adams and would be joining a team that has little in the way of offensive support outside of standout rookie tight end Brock Bowers. Better for Pete Carroll and Co. to fully turn the attack over to a first-year passer and ride things out.

Los Angeles Rams

This is merely a contingency plan for Los Angeles if contract talks with Matthew Stafford go off the rails amid uncertainty about where the 37-year-old stands. There are no suitable in-house options to take the reins, and the Rams would be taking a huge leap of faith by handing over the offense to whatever quarterback would be available in the latter half of the first round. Rodgers would no doubt love the fit, both in terms of landing back on the West Coast and playing for a ready-made winner. But it’s a far-fetched possibility that doesn’t truly warrant consideration unless there’s a significant blow-up within the organization.

New Orleans Saints

Playing for a coach five years his junior in Kellen Moore would surely make for an odd setup for Rodgers. So, too, would joining a franchise that seems prepared to reboot without entirely tearing things down. Playing in the NFC South would keep Rodgers within reach of the playoffs, but it would be reasonable for Moore to want to make his own mark on the organization without having to navigate the minefield of catering to the four-time MVP. Still, given the Saints’ track record of refusing to undergo a full overhaul while continually clawing toward a playoff berth, the possibility can’t be ruled out entirely. But dumping Derek Carr and eating a $50 million cap hit only to turn around and sign Rodgers would be a puzzling approach.
