PHOENIX — The San Diego Padres slashed $80 million from their payroll, lost their Cy Young winner, All-Star closer, three other starters and traded away one of the game’s marquee hitters.

Yet, Friday night, they showed just why they believe they can be playing in October.

The Padres acquired two-time batting champion Luis Arráez from the Miami Marlins for three prospects and one reliever, the teams confirmed on Saturday morning.

While Padres GM A.J. Preller and manager Mike Shildt remained mum until the deal became official, the Padres players were ecstatic with the news, believing that Arráez will make an immediate impact on their 17-18 team.

‘It’s really amazing,’ Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. said after their 7-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. ‘That guy is a baller. That guy is probably the closest to Tony Gwynn as there is right now. I’m looking forward to seeing him in our lineup.’

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

Gwynn, the late Hall of Famer, won eight batting titles for the Padres. The Padres haven’t had a player hit .300 with at least 500 games with the team since Gwynn in 2001.

Arráez is a .324 career hitter who won the 2023 batting title hitting .354 last season for the Marlins, and the 2022 batting title (.316) with the Minnesota Twins.

‘We got one of the best hitters in the game, so it’s going to be helpful for our ballclub,’ Padres All-Star third baseman Manny Machado said. ‘We’re excited to have him. It’s a good piece that we’re adding. It’s definitely going to make our lineup a lot longer …

‘And just a good dude. He’s awesome. He works his ass off. He’s going to fit well in this clubhouse.’

Arráez is expected to be the primary DH, but could also shuffle between first base and second base. It allows the Padres to shift Xander Bogaerts from second base to shortstop occasionally in place of Ha-Seong Kim, who could play third base when Machado is used as the DH. Bogaerts and Kim each have struggled this season, with Bogaerts hitting .216 with a .572 OPS while Kim is hitting .211 with a .693 OPS.

‘You’re always looking for more offense,’ Shildt said, ‘and a left-handed bat to balance the lineup.’

Padres starter Dylan Cease, who was acquired the last week of spring training from the Chicago White Sox, has first-hand knowledge of Arráez’s talent. Cease faced him 24 times while pitching against him in the AL Central when Arráez was with the Twins.

‘He’s the best contact hitter in baseball, I would think,’ Cease said. ‘He always has good at-bats. He’s always getting on base. And he definitely makes a team a lot better. It’s very exciting. …

‘I think it’s just a commitment to going out and doing what it takes, and I really respect that.’

The best aspect of the deal for the Padres, who are bumping up against the luxury tax with Arráez owed $10.1 million, is that the trade didn’t require losing a single person from their 26-man roster. The Marlins will receive outfield prospects Dillon Head and Jakob Marsee, first-base prospect Nathan Martorella and reliever Woo-Suk Go. Head, a 19-year-old speedy outfielder, is considered the Padres’ best prospect in the deal, ranked eighth in their farm system after being selected in the first round of last year’s draft. Yet, none of the players are ranked in the game’s top 100 prospects.

While the Padres no longer have the surplus of star power of a year ago, with Cy Young winner Blake Snell in San Francisco, All-Star outfielder Juan Soto in New York, closer Josh Hader in Houston, and starters Seth Lugo and  Michael Wacha in Kansas City, the Padres believe this team is capable of reaching the postseason after sitting home last October.

‘It’s great addition to the lineup,’ Padres first baseman Jake Cronenworth said. ‘Adding a guy like that to the lineup, and getting us the production wherever he’s going to hit, is huge for us.

‘We have a really good team right now.’

The 2024 Kentucky Derby was one for the history books as the 150th Run for the Roses came down to a photo finish at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

The first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown was won by Mystik Dan, who edged Sierra Leone by less than a nose at the finish line. Sierra Leone, along with Fierceness, was one of the field’s favorites among the 20-horse field.

The most exciting two minutes in sports wound up taking several more after officials had to gather to determine who crossed first between Mystik Dan and Sierra Leone, with third-place finisher Forever Young just another step behind. Forever Young came excruciatingly close to giving Japan its first Kentucky Derby win.

USA TODAY Sports provided analysis and highlights from Churchill Downs:

Mystik Dan won by a whisker. The key? One great ride.

Saturday, in the 150th Kentucky Derby, 38-year-old journeyman Brian Hernandez delivered one of the great human performances in the history of the race.

And the horse he rode wasn’t too bad, either.

With a rail-skimming ride that was practically perfect in its boldness and timing, Hernandez got 18-1 shot Mystik Dan home by a whisker over the surging Sierra Leone and Forever Young in a three-horse photo finish that left the Churchill Downs crowd of 156,710 initially wondering who had won America’s most famous horse race.

“(Hernandez) was the difference in winning and losing today, for sure,” trainer Kenny McPeek said.

Texas man wins nearly $60,000 on Mystik Dan

After the photo finish between Mystik Dan, Sierra Leone and Forever Young, Oblisk was shaking, his family members said.

‘I’m still shaking!’ Oblisk, a resident of Austin, Texas, told the Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network.

Watch: Kentucky Derby photo finish

Trainer Kenny McPeek wins Kentucky Derby after winning Kentucky Oaks

Trainer Kenny McPeek had the winning horse in Friday’s Kentucky Oaks and then Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. No trainer has accomplished the feat since Ben Jones in 1952.

‘Just brilliant jockey and ride,’ McPeek said on the NBC broadcast immediately after the race. ‘The draw helped us from the beginning; we talked about that. I was shocked Dornach broke bad.

‘But (jockey) Brian (Hernandez Jr.) is amazing, probably one of the most underrated riders in racing. Not anymore.’

Hernandez won the Oaks on Thorpedo Anna on Friday at Churchill Downs before guiding Mystik Dan to the photo-finish win.

‘That was the longest few minutes I’ve ever felt in my life,’ he said on NBC immediately after the race. ‘It was exciting when we hit the line, but I wasn’t sure if we won, it was quite a rush to sit there and wait for it.’

Looking ahead to a superstar sprinter this summer

At worlds, Richardson also won gold in the women’s 4×100 relay and bronze in the 200.

Saturday she told Cardi B to come to Paris to watch her sprint for Olympic gold.

A newly formed nonprofit organization aims to promote election integrity by compensating whistleblowers at the ground level who witness corruption first hand during the election process.

The Fair Election Fund will focus its efforts on election organizers and concerned citizens who witness the inner workings of elections first hand and will vet and pay whistleblowers who witness irregularities in the process.

‘The bulk of the group’s budget will be devoted to paying whistleblowers like election workers, organizers, and concerned citizens who have witnessed this corruption firsthand for sharing their stories,’ FEF said in a press release.

‘All claims will be vetted by Fair Election Fund’s team of experienced election law attorneys. The group will highlight these cases through aggressive paid and earned media campaigns, the first of which will begin immediately.’

In a new ad released on Saturday, the group explains that ‘elections are the bedrock of our American experiment.

‘It’s part of our core, but we can only have confidence in the results if there is trust in the process. Across the country there are real cases and abuses in the system that have eroded our trust.’

The ad cites efforts from the Biden administration to register voters that some have warned could end up registering illegal immigrants and non-eligible voters as well as cities across the country who have pushed to allow non-citizens to vote.

The ad also expresses concerns about the lack of voter ID in some places in the United States, efforts to curtail voter ID, concerns about drop boxes, mail-in ballots, and other potential vulnerabilities in the election system.

‘The reason why our elections still lack the integrity Americans deserve is because those on the front lines fear they will lose their livelihoods for speaking out against those in power – Not anymore,’ an official familiar with the effort said in the press release.

‘This initiative will ensure those who come forward to expose fraud and abuse in our elections system will be compensated and protected. This $5 million fund will shine a light on the corruption, stop it, and restore trust with the American public.’

A Heritage Foundation database has documented roughly 1,500 cases of confirmed voter fraud and almost 1,300 criminal convictions.

‘Safe-and-secure elections matter, because as can be seen by some of the documented cases in Heritage’s Voter Fraud Database, even a single ineligible or illegally cast ballot can make the difference in an election–especially those at the local level,’ Zack Smith, a Heritage Foundation senior legal fellow, posted on X last month.

Sony Pictures and private equity firm Apollo Global Management have sent a letter to the Paramount Global board expressing interest in acquiring the company for about $26 billion, according to people familiar with the matter.

The expression of formal interest comes as David Ellison’s Skydance Media, backed by private equity firms RedBird Capital and KKR, awaits word from Paramount’s special committee on whether the panel will recommend its bid to acquire the company to controlling shareholder Shari Redstone.

Skydance Media hasn’t heard anything from the special committee yet, though it expects to find out the special committee’s recommendations on next moves as early as Thursday, according to people familiar with the matter. Paramount’s panel could recommend approving Skydance’s offer or rejecting it, or it could come back to the Skydance consortium with alternatives or changes.

Spokespeople for Paramount, Redstone’s National Amusements, the special committee and Skydance declined to comment. Sony and Apollo did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

If the special committee wants to continue negotiating with Skydance, or Redstone wants more time to consider her options while still talking to Ellison’s company, the sides could extend an exclusivity window that ends Friday. It’s also possible Skydance could walk away from the deal, which it has been negotiating on for months.

If Skydance walks away, Redstone could turn her attention to negotiating a deal with Sony and Apollo, which would give all common shareholders a premium payout on their shares.

Paramount Global shares jumped more than 12% on the news that Sony and Apollo submitted a letter formalizing its interest, earlier reported by The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Redstone initially rejected an offer by Apollo in favor of exclusive talks with Skydance. Redstone still prefers a deal that would keep Paramount together, as Skydance’s offer would, a person familiar with the matter said. A private equity firm would likely tear the company apart through a series of divestitures to extract value.

The Sony-Apollo offer would make the former the majority shareholder and the latter a minority holder, according to a person familiar with the letter. That could also assuage Redstone’s fears that a new buyer could break apart the company, because Sony is another large Hollywood player and the owner of Sony Pictures.

A $26 billion offer for Paramount Global values the company higher than the company’s current $22 billion enterprise value.

Still, the special committee would likely want to review details on financing and get assurances that there are no regulatory challenges in merging with Sony, a non-U.S. entity. To do this, the special committee would have to inform the Skydance consortium that it wants to end its exclusive talks, which would likely drive Skydance away as a bidder, according to people familiar with the matter.

That move would be applauded by a number of Class B shareholders, including Gamco, Matrix Asset Advisors and Aspen Sky Trust, who have all publicly expressed dismay about the Skydance transaction. Skydance’s “best and final” offer included merging its entertainment assets with Paramount, raising $3 billion to buy out common shareholders at about a 30% premium on an unaffected $11 per share price, and paying Redstone nearly $2 billion for her controlling stake.

Redstone could also argue she’s more comfortable with pushing forward at Paramount Global without a sale. Earlier this week, the board removed Bob Bakish as the company’s CEO. Installing a new CEO and giving investors a new plan forward would be essential to assuage a restless common shareholder base, who would likely argue the Apollo-Sony bid, if real, is in the best interest of shareholders.

America’s job market increasingly appears to be splitting into two tracks, economists say, alongside a steady demand for skilled workers and a flagging interest in hiring more ‘knowledge-based’ professionals.

The evidence can be found in the data, which shows a higher unemployment rate for professional and business services workers, and a lower one for people who work in manufacturing.

‘It’s a buyer’s market for brain and a seller’s market for brawn,’ said Aaron Terrazas, chief economist at the jobs and workplace search site Glassdoor.

On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the latest monthly payroll data for the U.S. economy. Total employment rose by 175,000 in April. The unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.9% from 3.8% in March.

That came in below estimates of 240,000 jobs for April.

The softness in the jobs report was greeted with some positive reactions. Stock futures jumped after the news. Concerns about the U.S. economy have been focused on overheating — whether inflation will continue to rise and force the Federal Reserve to keep interest rates higher in an effort to slow the economy and bring rising prices under control.

Jason Furman, who served as President Barack Obama’s top economic advisor, said on CNBC’s ‘Squawk Box’ that it was a ‘goldilocks’ report, showing an economy that could be headed to the soft landing of reasonable inflation and low unemployment.

“The bottom line is this report is quite reassuring,’ said Furman, who now teaches at Harvard.

It’s not that America is only — or even mostly — producing low-wage jobs. The health care industry continues to lead the employment boom, with an approximately 4.5% gain in payrolls over the past year, equating to some 750,000 new jobs. Other industries seeing strong growth include government jobs, certain sectors of social work, travel, tourism and the arts — alongside some manufacturing sectors.

But the overall labor market remains at something of a standstill, as seen in a report earlier this week showing the hiring rate continuing to drift sideways. At the same time, the rate of workers quitting or being laid off is also not showing much change. Economists led by Guy Berger at The Burning Glass Institute research group call it the ‘great stay.’

‘It’s a good time to have a job, but a not-so-good time to be actively looking for one,’ he wrote in his Substack newsletter Wednesday.

Many American consumers have also begun reporting signs of a deteriorating job situation. In its latest report on consumer confidence, the Conference Board business group said respondents to its monthly survey reported feeling less positive about the current labor market and more concerned about future business conditions, job availability and income.

That echoed findings of the New York Federal Reserve’s monthly survey of consumer expectations, which reported more survey respondents feeling pessimistic about losing their job or finding a new job. Respondents rated the average probability of losing their job in the next 12 months at almost 1 in 6 — above pre-pandemic levels and the highest reading since September 2020.

‘On the margin, businesses are not as eager to add staff,’ said Sarah House, managing director and senior economist at Wells Fargo.

But why has payroll data remained strong? One reason is increased supply, thanks to rising participation rates in the workforce, as well as booming immigration.

‘There is increased labor ‘supply’ for businesses that do want to hire or add staff,’ House said.

Yet, those trends are likely to diminish too, if they haven’t already, she said.

One sign that the job market remains strong is that the number of individuals collecting unemployment is still very low.

‘We’re seeing a gradual and orderly slowing’ in workers quitting and firms with job openings, said Joe Brusuelas, principal and chief economist for RSM US LLP. That is consistent with private sector firms ‘carefully managing their labor force.’

On Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank does not intend to change its key interest rate anytime soon even as its fight against accelerating price increases has stalled — and despite the apparent softening of the labor market.

He said the central bank had ‘the luxury of strong growth and a strong labor market’ that will allow it to maintain interest rates until inflation comes down further — and ruled out any implication that there might be ‘stagflation’ in the economy.

But he invoked the prospect of a rate cut should the labor market ‘unexpectedly’ weaken.

As inflation continues to moderate, Powell said, ‘We’re now focusing on the other goal,’ referring to the Fed’s dual mandate of balancing price growth with jobs.

‘The employment goal now comes back into focus. So we are focusing on it,” he said.

Some economists saw Friday’s jobs report as sign that Powell’s plans are coming to fruition.

‘These are the #jobs numbers that Jay Powell was hoping for,’ David Wessel, director of the Hutchins Center on Fiscal and Monetary Policy at the Brookings Institution, posted on X.

Skydance Media is prepared to walk away from its offer for Paramount Global unless it receives a firm commitment from controlling shareholder Shari Redstone, following the latest offer from Apollo Global Management and Sony Pictures, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The exclusivity window for discussions between David Ellison’s Skydance, backed by private equity firms RedBird Capital and KKR, and Paramount ends Friday and won’t be extended, people familiar with the matter told CNBC’s David Faber. Paramount shares rose following the report.

The consortium has been waiting for word from Paramount’s special committee on whether the panel will recommend its bid to acquire the company to Redstone. Now, with Apollo and Sony formally expressing interest in acquiring the company for about $26 billion, the Skydance group is looking for Redstone to reaffirm her commitment to the deal.

The Skydance consortium is not keen to hang around to be a stalking horse offer for Apollo and Sony, one of the people said. Still, depending on what Redstone says, Ellison may be willing to work with her, a second person said.

Spokespeople for Skydance, Redstone’s National Amusements and Paramount’s special committee declined to comment on Friday.

Apollo and Sony made their latest offer Thursday, CNBC previously reported. The special committee is currently considering the bid, the people said.

As part of Skydance’s latest deal on the table, Redstone may take less than $2 billion for her controlling stake in Paramount, which is lower than Skydance’s initial offer. The consortium is contributing additional capital to pay common, Class B shareholders at a nearly 30% premium to the undisturbed trading price of about $11 per share, CNBC has reported. In total, Redstone and Skydance would contribute $3 billion, with the vast majority going to Class B shareholders, according to people familiar with the matter.

Skydance’s valuation as part of the deal remains around $5 billion, the people said. It’s unclear if the Apollo-Sony offer gives Redstone the same premium.

Previously, Redstone rejected an offer by Apollo in favor of exclusive talks with Skydance. Redstone has preferred a deal that would keep Paramount together, as Skydance’s offer would, CNBC previously reported. A private equity firm is likely to break up the company.
