The Toronto Maple Leafs are hiring a former Stanley Cup winner to try to end the NHL’s longest active championship drought.

The Maple Leafs announced the hiring of Craig Berube as the franchise’s 32nd coach on Friday and said he would be officially introduced on Tuesday.

Berube is replacing Sheldon Keefe, who was fired on May 9 after a fifth consecutive early playoff exit. Berube was fired in December during his sixth season with the St. Louis Blues.

The big appeal of Berube is that he won a Stanley Cup championship with the Blues in 2019. He’s also very demanding, important on a team that’s loaded with top-end talent but has won only one playoff round since 2004.

Berube went 206-132-44 with the Blues and 75-58-28 during two seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers. He was named a finalist for coach of the year in 2018-19 after taking the Blues from last place to a title as a midseason replacement.

The Maple Leafs haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1967.

NHL coaching carousel

With Berube’s hiring, four NHL teams (Winnipeg Jets, New Jersey Devils, San Jose Sharks and Seattle Kraken) have coach openings. The Los Angeles Kings, who fired Todd McLellan during the season, are also looking for a permanent replacement.

The Buffalo Sabres (Lindy Ruff), Ottawa Senators (Travis Green) and St. Louis Blues (Drew Bannister had his interim tag removed) joined the Maple Leafs in filling their openings.

The just-ousted Carolina Hurricanes and coach Rod Brind’Amour need to negotiate a new deal.

A bizarre day at the 2024 PGA Championship has come to an end.

Friday started in chaos after tournament worker John Mills was struck and killed by a shuttle bus as he arrived to work outside of the Valhalla Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky, subsequently delaying Round 2 tee times.

Mills’ tragic death was unfortunately overshadowed by the arrest of World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler, who faces four criminal charges, including second degree assault on a police officer, following a dustup with a Louisville police officer directing traffic at the course following the fatal accident.

‘I feel like my head is still spinning,” Scheffler said after shooting 5-under on the day despite his arrest. ‘I definitely never imagined ever going to jail, and I definitely never imagined going to jail the morning before one of my tee times, for sure.”

Scheffler, the 2024 Masters champion, is currently tied for fourth place at 9-under. The top three is rounded out by Americans Xander Schauffele (-12), Collin Morikawa (-11) and Sahith Theegala (-10).

Play was suspended at 8:41 p.m. ET on Friday due to darkness with a handful of players left on the course. The projected cut is set at 1-under par.

Scottie Scheffler emerges from wild ordeal looking like a real person

Just after 6 a.m. on Friday, the best golfer on the planet found himself in handcuffs being led into a police car. Shortly after that, he was in a jail cell, doing some pre-round stretching in hopes that he could play the second round of the PGA Championship. And a few hours later, he was in front of reporters after shooting 66, putting him right in contention to win his third major championship.

Tiger Woods ends second round with birdie, still misses cut

It’s official — Tiger Woods is out. He ended his second round at the PGA Championship on a high-note with a birdie on No. 18 to bring him to 6-over for the day and 7-over for the tournament, but he still sits 8 strokes above the projected cut line at 1-under.

It marks only the 13th time in Woods’ illustrious career that he’s missed the cut at a major.

He posted three birdies, three bogeys and two triple-bogeys during the round at Valhalla Golf Club, the same course he won the 2000 PGA Championship.

Who didn’t make the cut at PGA Championship?

It looks like Tiger Woods’ time at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club — the course where he won the 2000 PGA Championship — is ending early. Woods is currently 8 over par through 16 holes on the second round, 10 strokes off the projected cut line at 1-under.

He’s not the only one below the cut line. Spain’s John Rahm (E), England’s Matt Fitzpatrick (E), Americans Dustin Johnson (+1), Wyndham Clark (+4), Phil Mickelson (+4) and South Korea’s Si Woo Kim (+5) are among the notable golfers who are projected to miss the cut at the PGA Championship.

‘I was never angry. I was just in shock’

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — On Friday morning, Scottie Scheffler stretched in a jail cell, preparing for a round of golf he didn’t know he’d be able to play.

“I didn’t know what time it was. I didn’t know what was going on,” Scheffler said. “When I was sitting in like the holding cell, there was a TV there, and I could see myself on the TV on ESPN.”

If Scheffler wasn’t all that interesting as the world’s No. 1 golfer, that’s no longer the case.

In rainy conditions and with huge crowds roaring their support, Scheffler showed up with a jailhouse sandwich in his stomach and shot a 5-under-par 66 during Friday’s second round at the 2024 PGA Championship, bringing him to 9 under for the tournament. — Gentry Estes, Nashville Tennessean

Tiger Woods on the verge of missing cut

Tigers Woods is almost out of time. The four-time PGA Championship winner currently sits at 8-over for the tournament through 14 holes after picking up back-to-back bogeys on No. 11 and No. 12. The cut currently is projected at 1-under, meaning Woods is 10 strokes away from making it into the weekend. Woods has made 18 of the last 22 cuts at the PGA Championship, according to the ESPN broadcast.

Woods won the the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

Tiger Woods hits another bogey

Disaster struck on No. 11 for Woods after he posted back-to-back birdies on No. 7 and 8, appearing to pick up some momentum heading into the back nine of the second round, but his short game got in the way again. Woods three-putted on No. 11 to finish with a bogey, his second of the day. He also had two triple bogeys in the second round. He’s back to 7-over for the tournament and in danger of missing the cut (1-under).

Xander Schauffele back in the lead

American Xander Schauffele is atop the leaderboard. He sits at 12-under through 11 holes, leading fellow American Collin Morikawa by one stroke and American Scottie Scheffler by three strokes.

Schauffele has posted four birdies in the second round to get him in sole possession of the lead, but a bogey on No. 11 cut into his cushion. Schauffele is vying for his first major title. His best showing at the PGA Championship was a 10th-place finish in 2020.

Watch: Tiger Woods almost hit a hole in one

Woods nearly aced No. 8. He drove a ball nearly 170 yards on the 173-yard, Par-3 hole and tapped in a putt to post a birdie. It marks Woods second consecutive birdie after getting off to a rough start in the second round and posting two triple bogeys. He’s back to 6-over for the tournament. The projected cut is at 1-under.

Earlier in the day, Swedish golfer Sebastian Soderberg aced the same hole, the first of the week.

Tiger Woods saves par on No. 5

Driving hasn’t been a problem with Woods so far. Hole No. 5 (Par-4, 468 yards) was no different. He drove a ball down the middle of the fairway at 171 mph. It’s the short game that has been missing so far in the second round. Woods barely missed the green his next stroke and chipped the ball near the flag stick to set up a par putt that he sunk.

To make matters worse, the projected cut line has moved to 1-under for the tournament, meaning Woods has even more ground to cover. He’s 8-over through five holes.

Tiger Woods’ struggles continues with another triple bogey

Things looked brighter after Woods found the middle of the fairway with his first stroke on Par-4, No. 4, but he missed the green on his next shot after the ball hit a lump in the green and rolled off completely. His next shot ended up in the bunker and he wasn’t able to clear it with his next stroke, ending back up in the bunker. Woods chipped the ball onto the green on his fifth stroke and two-putted it in for a triple bogey, his second of the day. He sits at 8-over par on the tournament.

Tiger Woods posts a triple bogey

Tiger Woods’ second-round at the Valhalla Golf Club is not off to a good start. After shooting a par-4 on the opening hole, Woods recorded a triple bogey and a bogey on hole No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Woods started the second round 1-over and now moves to 5-over for the tournament. He has some major ground to make up in order to make the cut, which is projected at 1-under.

Collin Morikawa increases lead, Tiger begins second round

Collin Morikawa (-12) birdied five of his last six holes and is three shots ahead of Thomas Detry, Mark Hubbard and Xander Schauffele.

Tiger Woods has teed off and begins his round tied for 84th place at 1-over. He has some work to do as the projected cut line is even par.

Collin Morikawa surges into lead

Collin Morikawa made his third straight birdie at No. 6 and now owns the outright lead at 10-under. Scottie Scheffler is two shots back with birdies on No. 2 and 4 on the back nine.

PGA releases statement, man killed identified

‘Our primary concern today remains with the family of John Mills, who lost his life in a tragic accident early this morning while reporting to work,’ the PGA of America said in a statement. ‘As it relates to the incident involving Scottie Scheffler, we are fully cooperating as local authorities review what took place. While the legal process plays out, questions should to be directed to Scheffler’s attorney or local authorities.’

Mark Hubbard, Collin Morikawa now tied for lead

Hubbard, who is looking for his first major title, nailed a birdie on 18 and is tied for the lead with Xander Schauffele at 9-under. Heading to the back nine, Hubbard finished 3-under on the front. Morikawa has birdied No. 4 and 5 on his back nine to grab a share of the lead also.

Rising scores despite heavy rain

Despite a steady rain that has been falling all morning at Valhalla, scores keep rising.

Xander Schauffele (-9) will tee off later, but Mark Hubbard is one shot back. Collin Morikawa, Austin Eckroat, and Thomas Detry are all crammed in at 7-under. Scottie Scheffler started his back nine with a par on hole No. 1, and he is sitting at -6 under for the tournament.

Mark Hubbard, Jason Day making noise on Day 2

Hubbard has birdied two of his first four holes starting his second round, and Jason Day finished his front nine with three birdies to get him to 3-under. Alex Noren also has three birdies on his first nine holes and finds himself three shots from the lead.

Xander Schauffele’s lead shrinking early in second round

Golfers starting their second round in the morning are inching closer to the lead. Mark Hubbard is now two shots after his birdie on No. 10, with Thomas Detry and Collin Morikawa each adding a birdie to their respective scorecards to get to 6-under. Harris English has three birdies on the front nine to get him to 5-under.

Leader Xander Schauffele (-9) is scheduled to tee off at 2:38 p.m. ET.

Scottie Scheffler gets another birdie

Scheffler started the day with a birdie at No. 10, then bogeyed No. 11. He got right back on track on No. 12 to get another birdie and is now back to 5-under, four shots from the lead.

First ace of the tournament

Sebastian Söderberg made a hole-in-one on the Par 3 No. 8 for the first ace of the PGA Championship. That shot brought to even par for the tournament and 2-under for the day.

Louisville police release incident report on Scheffler arrest

Louisville authorities released their version of events that led to Scottie Scheffler being arrested on Friday morning. According to the arrest complaint, an officer was directing traffic due to an accident involving a fatality when Scheffler ‘tried to gain access to the course.’

The officer, dressed in a reflective rain jacket, stopped Scheffler and attempted to give him instructions, but the subject ‘refused to comply and accelerated forward,’ dragging the officer to the ground, damaging his $80 uniform pants ‘beyond repair.’ The officer, who was identified as Detective Bryan Gillis, was taken to the hospital for further treatment and ‘suffered pain, swelling to abrasions to his left wrist and knee.’

Scheffler birdies first hole of the day

If Scottie Scheffler was distracted by this morning’s events, it didn’t show it on the Par 5 No. 10. After hitting the rough on his first shot, Scheffler steadied himself and made a birdie to start his round. He is currently 5-under for the tournament.

Scottie Scheffler begins Round 2 at PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler now switches his mind to golf.

The World No. 1 golfer has teed off at Valhalla, reaching the rough on hole No. 10. Scheffler shot a 4-under par in the first round, good for a tie for 11th place.

Scottie Scheffler makes statement about Friday’s arrest

ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington, who witnessed Scottie Scheffler’s morning arrest and recorded it on social media, shared a statement he received from Scheffler:

‘This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today. Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything in perspective.’

PGA of America statement

The PGA of America released a statement about Friday morning’s events:

‘This morning we were devastated to learn that a worker with one of our vendors was tragically struck and killed by a shuttle bus outside Valhalla Golf Club. This is heartbreaking to all of us involved with the PGA Championship. We extend our sincere condolences to their family and loved ones.’

Scottie Scheffler’s lawyer addresses golfer’s arrest

Steve Romines, a lawyer representing Scottie Scheffler after his Friday morning arrest, spoke to the media moments after Scheffler left Louisville Metro Police Department.

‘He was going into Valhalla to work out and get ready for his tee time. (Police) were directing traffic, he held his media credential out and was going in like they’ve been instructed to. Apparently there had been a traffic accident, or maybe even a fatality down the road, and that had changed the traffic patterns, and he was unaware of that. And, I think the officer that was directing traffic, was maybe not part of the event traffic detail and so that’s where the communication, miscommunication arose and that’s why we’re here.’

When asked what happens next, Romines said it had not yet been decided whether he would play golf Friday and ‘we’ll just deal with the court system as it comes.’

Is Scottie Scheffler golfing at PGA Championship on Friday?

Scottie Scheffler is inside the clubhouse at Valhalla Golf Club, and it appears he will be able to make his 10:08 a.m. ET tee time.

There was some question whether Scheffler would make it back to Valhalla after being detained and charged with second degree assault on a police officer, which is a felony, as well as criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.

USGA Rule 5.3 states the committee can decide that exceptional circumstances prevented a golfer from starting on time. Under this provision there is no breach of rule and no penalty. It does not appear that it will be applicable in Scheffler’s case since he has arrived at the course just less than an hour before his tee time.

Scottie Scheffler arrives for PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler was dropped off at the clubhouse at Valhalla just after 9:10 a.m. ET.

As Scheffler exited his vehicle he was asked by ESPN reporter Marty Smith if he had any comment about this morning’s incident.

‘I love you, Marty,’ Scheffler said, with a smile.

PGA Championship underway; Scheffler on way to PGA Championship

As a chaotic morning continues, golf has started at Valhalla with the first handful of groups teeing off.

Scottie Scheffler, who has a 10:08 a.m. ET tee time, has been released from Louisville Metro Police Department and is en route to the golf course.

Scottie Scheffler arrested before Round 2 of PGA Championship

World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was booked into a Louisville jail Friday morning after being detained by police near the entrance of Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week’s 2024 PGA Championship.

Scheffler, 27, was booked shortly before 7:30 a.m., according to online records published by the Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections. He is being charged with second degree assault on a police officer, which is a felony, as well as criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.

Scottie Scheffler detained by police before start of PGA Championship

Hours before his second-round tee time, world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was detained by police after a traffic incident near the course’s entrance. ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington witnessed the scene, saying ‘a misunderstanding with traffic flow led to his attempt to drive past a police office’ into the course.

‘When Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer shoved Scheffler against the car and immediately placed him in handcuffs,’ Darlington posted on X (formerly Twitter). ‘He is now being detained in the back of a police car.’

Darlington posted video of police detaining Scheffler in which an officer told him that the golfer was going to jail. Records from Louisville Metropolitan Department of Corrections show he was booked at 7:28 a.m. Scheffler is now scheduled to tee off at 10:08 a.m.

Valhalla hosted a spectacular opening round with 64 golfers shooting under par, the most in PGA Championship history. The previous record was 60 in 2006 at Medinah.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Inter Miami star Lionel Messi is expected to play in Saturday’s match against D.C. United, making his return from a one-game absence from a brief injury.

Messi participated in team drills during Inter Miami’s practice Friday, and was not listed on the MLS injury report, both good signs he might play.

More important, it’s an even better sign a recent leg injury might not affect his Copa América run this summer with Argentina.

“Well, we trained well yesterday, and we hope to train well today,” Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said before Friday’s practice. “We will define it after training, but we are optimistic about tomorrow’s match.”

How to watch Inter Miami vs. D.C. United live stream on Saturday

The match begins at 7:30 p.m. ET at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and streamed via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.

TICKETS: Experience Messi and Inter Miami in person at home against DC United

SHOP: Get the latest Messi and Inter Miami team gear from the MLS Store

How did Messi get injured?

Messi did not play in Inter Miami’s scoreless draw against Orlando City on Wednesday as a precaution after he collided with a CF Montreal player during a match last Saturday.

Messi stretched his left leg to control a pass but Montreal’s George Campbell ran into him with momentum. It appeared Messi hyperextended his leg, but Inter Miami has defined the injury as a “knock” or “blow” due to the collision. It’s not a muscle or structural injury.

“He felt fine. He had the blow, he could not maneuver well with his leg, it still bothered him [Thursday] to touch the area that bothers him,” Martino said. “So his absence from the match with Orlando is strictly because of the blow of the match.”

Inter Miami’s match against D.C. United will end a Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday stretch for the club.

Three matches in a week, less than five weeks away from Copa America, wasn’t an ideal scenario for Messi to force an injury return.

Messi leads MLS with 12 assists and is second with 10 goals scored despite missing five league games this season.

Inter Miami earned a point from the tie with Orlando, and still lead the MLS Eastern Conference with 28 points.

What is Messi, Inter Miami, and Argentina’s upcoming schedule?

After the D.C. United game, Inter Miami has three matches remaining before Messi departs for Copa America 2024 to captain Argentina, the defending World Cup and Copa America champions.

Inter Miami visits the Vancouver Whitecaps on May 25, and will host Atlanta United on May 29 and St. Louis City SC on June 1.

Messi will join Argentina for two exhibitions before Copa America on June 9 against Ecuador in Chicago, and on June 14 against Guatemala in Landover, Maryland.

Messi and Argentina will play in the Copa America opener against Canada on June 20 in Atlanta, Chile on June 25 in New Jersey and Peru on June 29 in Miami during group play.

Fox News Media has invited the Trump campaign and the Biden campaign to participate in a vice presidential debate before the 2024 election.

In a letter to the campaigns, Fox News Media said it requested the opportunity to host a vice presidential debate, and said it would be available to do so on July 23, August 13, or dates ‘following both nomination conventions.’

The proposed vice presidential debate would be hosted by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, who Fox News Media President Jay Wallace said ‘are obvious choices as the faces of our political coverage.’

‘In addition, FOX News Media has reached out to Virginia State University as a possible location, since it was selected by the CPD as the first historically Black College or University to host a Presidential debate,’ the letter said.

‘Despite not having a Democratic debate in 2016/2020, FOX News was able to secure town halls with Democratic candidates such as: Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, Julian Castro, Amy Klobuchar and Kirsten Gillibrand.
In recognition of FOX News Media’s capabilities and reputation, we cordially extend an invitation to all concerned parties to discuss our proposal,’ the letter states.

Former President Trump accepted the invitation Friday afternoon.

‘On behalf of the future Vice President of the United States, who I have not yet chosen, we hereby accept the Fox Vice Presidential Debate, hopefully at Virginia State University, the first Historically Black College or University to host a Debate – Date to be determined,’ Trump posted on his Truth Social. ‘I urge Vice President Kamala Harris to agree to this. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!’

The Biden campaign already accepted CBS News’ vice presidential debate invitation for this summer, setting the stage for a showdown between Vice President Kamala Harris and whoever is selected as the Republican VP nominee.

The campaign notified CBS News that they accepted the invitation to participate in studio on either of the proposed dates — July 23 or August 13.

On Wednesday, the Biden campaign wrote a letter to the Commission on Presidential Debates, abandoning the decades-old tradition of three fall events organized by the debate commission.

Former President Trump, shortly after, exclusively told Fox News Digital that he would accept the timeline proposed by Biden — scheduling the first presidential debate for June 27 on CNN and the second for September 10 on ABC News.

The Biden-Harris campaign asked that the debates occur inside a TV studio, with microphones that automatically cut off when a speaker’s time limit elapses. The letter also asked that the debates involve just the two candidates and the moderator — without ‘an in-person audience with raucous or disruptive partisans and donors.’

They also want the debates without the participation of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. or other independent or third-party candidates.

‘We look forward to the Trump campaign accepting one of these dates so that the full debate calendar for this campaign can be set,’ the Biden campaign said about the vice presidential debate schedule on Thursday.

The fast scheduling began Wednesday morning after Biden posted a video to social media.

‘Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. Since then, he hasn’t shown up for a debate. Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal,’ Biden said in a video message shared Wednesday morning. ‘I’ll even do it twice. So let’s pick the dates, Donald. I hear you’re free on Wednesdays.’

Trump, in an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital shortly after, said:

‘Crooked Joe Biden is the worst debater I have ever faced – he can’t put two sentences together,’ Trump told Fox News Digital. ‘Crooked is also the worst president in the history of the United States, by far.’

Trump told Fox News Digital that ‘it is time for a debate to take place – even if it has to be held through the offices of the Commission on Presidential Debates, which are totally controlled by Democrats and who, as people remember, got caught cheating with me with debate sound levels.’

‘I’m ready to go,’ Trump said. ‘The dates that they proposed are fine. Anywhere. Anytime. Any place. Let’s see if Joe can make it to the stand-up podium.’

‘The proposed June and early September dates are fully acceptable to me,’ Trump told Fox News Digital. ‘I will provide my own transportation.’

And just moments later, Biden posted on his social media that he ‘received and accepted an invitation’ from CNN for a debate on June 27.

‘Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place,’ Biden wrote.

When asked for comment, Trump told Fox News Digital that he will accept and ‘will be there.’ The Republican added that he is ‘looking forward to being in beautiful Atlanta.’

Later Wednesday, Trump took to his Truth Social, echoing his comments to Fox News Digital.

‘It’s time for a debate so that he can explain to the American People his highly destructive Open Border Policy, new and ridiculous EV Mandates, the allowance of Crushing Inflation, High Taxes, and his really WEAK Foreign Policy, which is allowing the World to ‘Catch on Fire.’ I am Ready and Willing to Debate Crooked Joe at the two proposed times in June and September,’ Trump posted. ‘I would strongly recommend more than two debates and, for excitement purposes, a very large venue, although Biden is supposedly afraid of crowds – That’s only because he doesn’t get them. Just tell me when, I’ll be there. ‘Let’s get ready to Rumble!!!’’

Trump on Saturday appeared before a crowd of tens of thousands on the Jersey Shore in the deep-blue state. The campaign event was held in between Trump’s appearances in Manhattan Criminal Court.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) condemned the fiery House hearing after Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Marjorie Taylor Greene traded barbs, saying that members needed to show decorum.

‘It’s not a good look for Congress,’ Johnson told reporters on Friday.

The Republican speaker chided both parties, saying that while ‘vigorous debate’ was welcomed, ‘we have to treat one another with dignity and respect.’

‘Decorum is an important principle to maintain,’ he said.

‘And we need people on both sides of the aisle to just, I think, just take the emotion out of it. We can have vigorous debate. That’s what this institution is built upon. But you know, we have to treat one another with dignity and respect,’ Johnson said.

The hearing quickly spiraled out of control, after Greene took a shot at her Democrat colleague, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Mo.

‘Do you know what we’re here for?’ Crockett asked Greene, who shot back: ‘I think your fake eyelashes are messing up what you’re reading.’

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer pleaded for order amid audible groans in the chamber.

Ocasio-Cortez weighed in saying: ‘I do have a point of order, and I would like to move to take down Ms. Green’s words. That is absolutely unacceptable. How dare you attack the physical appearance of another person… move her words down.’

‘Are your feelings hurt?’ Greene asked.

‘Oh girl, baby girl!’ Ocasio-Cortez shot back. ‘Don’t even play!’

Ocasio-Cortez pushed to have Greene’s words ‘taken down,’ which is a procedure to give a speaker the chance to withdraw their words or amend them if they are deemed out of order.

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-KY, ruled that the comments did not violate House rules against engaging in ‘personalities’ during debate.

The hearing led to a 24-20 vote along party lines to recommend holding Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt.

Crockett reacted to the brouhaha on X.

‘So MTG wanted to talk about my appearance in COMMITTEE?!’ Crockett wrote on X. ‘This is what happens when mentally deficient people who can’t read and follow rules or just don’t give a da–… somehow end up in CONGRESS!’.

‘Disagreement is part of democracy, but the hearing descended into outright name-calling and insults about Congressmembers’ appearances,’ Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) wrote on X. ‘No American deserves this chaos in Congress.’

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), observing the hearing, wrote on X: ‘Looks like they’re having a totally normal one over in Oversight…’

Fox News Digital has reached out to Speaker Johnson’s office for comment.

As they prepare for their face-off on the debate stage next month, warning signals are flashing for President Biden and former President Donald Trump in their 2024 election rematch – as they both appear to struggle to lock up their base voters.

More than two months after she dropped out of the Republican presidential nomination race, zombie candidate Nikki Haley is still grabbing sizable support in the GOP primaries at the expense of Trump.

And Biden is continuing to deal with a persistent ‘uncommitted’ vote protesting the president’s support for Israel in its war with Hamas in Gaza.

‘You going to see most Democrats and most Republicans come home. But there are so many warning signs flashing in these primaries,’ David Kochel, a longtime Republican consultant and veteran of numerous GOP presidential campaigns, told Fox News Digital.

One week after Haley won 22% of the vote in Indiana’s GOP presidential primary, where independents and Democrats could vote, it was supposed to be a different story on Tuesday as Maryland, Nebraska, and West Virginia held mostly closed Republican contests.

But according to unofficial results, Haley grabbed 21% support in Maryland and 18% in Nebraska.

And Haley performed strongest in suburban areas in both states, as she also did in earlier primaries held after she suspended her presidential bid. It’s another potential general election problem for Trump, who is currently making history as the first former or current president to stand trial in a criminal case.

‘It might just be that Republicans want one last chance to express their dissatisfaction with the nominee and they’ll come home,’ Kochel, who remained neutral in the 2024 GOP nomination race, said.

‘But if I’m running the Trump campaign, particularly as I look towards the vice presidential nomination, I would be trying to figure out anyway I could to reassure the Haley voters that we’re going to listen to them and not just run a base only strategy,’ he suggested.

Biden also saw a red flag in Tuesday’s primaries, as 10% of votes in the Democratic presidential contest in Maryland were ‘uncommitted,’ according to unofficial and incomplete tabulations. It’s the latest example of far left voters expressing their dissatisfaction with the president’s Mideast policies.

The primaries were held on the eve of a proposal by Biden and his re-election campaign to hold presidential debates with Trump in June and early September – with a vice presidential debate over the summer – to which Trump quickly agreed.

Mark Penn, the longtime Democratic pollster, former top political adviser to former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Fox News contributor, pointed to Biden’s anemic poll numbers in the key battleground states as he argued the president’s debate proposal came out of weakness.

‘You don’t want to debate when you’re ahead. You want to avoid debates at all costs,’ Penn said in an interview on Fox News’ ‘America’s Newsroom.’ ‘Obviously it’s uphill for President Biden, or he wouldn’t be debating in the first place.’

National surveys for months have indicated that many Americans are anything but thrilled with the rematch between the 81-year-old Democratic incumbent and his 77-year-old predecessor in the White House.

‘You’re going to put the most unpopular politicians we’ve ever seen run against each other in front of 80 million people on a debate stage. One of them is famously bombastic and toxic and loose with the facts. The other one is barely able to get out a sentence. He had six jump cuts in a 13-second video they put out today,’ Kochel said as he pointed to Trump and specifically to Biden’s video proposing the debates.

And Kochel predicted that the debates may ‘reinforce to the country how dissatisfied they are with these choices.’

Long-simmering tensions within the House GOP are poised to inflame as members of Congress find themselves in the throes of the election season.

Ideological, political and even personal differences that have seen Republicans’ razor-thin House majority wracked with chaos in the 118th Congress are now manifesting in lawmakers endorsing primary challengers against their incumbent colleagues.

‘I think every member should worry about their own race and not get involved in other people’s races,’ Rep. Will Timmons, R-S.C., whose own primary challenger is backed by several members of the House Freedom Caucus, told Fox News Digital. ‘But unfortunately, there’s a domino effect when, you know, he makes decisions to get involved in other people’s races. It’s only logical that there will be a countervailing force.’

Timmons, who is being backed by Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., was referring to Freedom Caucus Chairman Bob Good, R-Va., who has endorsed several Republican challengers running to the right of current members.

Good himself is facing a GOP opponent who has seen support from his colleagues. A fundraiser invitation from late March, previously obtained by Fox News Digital, for Virginia state Sen. John McGuire’s campaign also included GOP lawmakers like House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Ala., and Reps. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., and Morgan Luttrell, R-Texas.

He’s also being opposed by Defending Main Street, a super PAC affiliated with the pragmatic House GOP group known as the Main Street Caucus.

‘I’ll just say we can’t change Washington with the people who are here in Washington that are part of the problem,’ Good told Fox News Digital when asked about the situation with his endorsements and those against him. ‘And I will say that the endorsements of challengers to incumbents started on the other end of the party, started with the liberal moderate members, the establishment RINOs, endorsing against me.’

Another notable race where Good and Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., have involved themselves is Texas’ 23rd congressional district, where Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, is facing a runoff primary against social media influencer and Second Amendment activist Brandon Herrera. Gaetz and Good have both backed Herrera, while Gonzales has the backing of the speaker and other fellow Texas Republican lawmakers.

‘I won all 29 counties in the primary, and I’m gonna win all 29 counties in the runoff,’ Gonzales told Fox News Digital. ‘Anyone who’s ever run against me has never served in public office. So bring it on.’

When pressed about members endorsing his opponent, he said, ‘If Matt Gaetz spent as much time trying to defeat the Democrats as he does on his eyebrows, we would be in a great position.’

Gaetz responded in a statement to Fox News Digital, ‘I would love to spend all of my time fighting only the Democrats, but if Republicans like Tony Gonzales are going to vote like Democrats and act like Democrats, I’ll fight them too. And anyone who gets close to me sees that my eyebrows are quite unkempt.’

Other GOP lawmakers who spoke with Fox News Digital expressed dismay at their colleagues’ infighting.

‘I find it outrageous. As somebody from the business world, you go out of business doing things that way,’ Rep. Dan Meuser, R-Pa., told Fox News Digital.

He said of Gonzales’ race, ‘That’s a difficult district for Republicans to win. I mean, Tony is like the perfect guy for it. So the idea that we’re trying to out-red him in a primary, I think is just foolish because you’re gonna lose Tony, and then you’re gonna get someone who doesn’t fit with the district, and we’re gonna lose that.’

‘And then, you know, going after Good, I mean, I don’t think that’s right, either,’ Meuser added.

Rep. Greg Murphy, R-N.C., told Fox News Digital of the infighting, ‘I think it’s very unfortunate.’

‘I think it’s very, very sad that we have Republicans caring more about fighting against Republicans than the real true challenge we have because of what Democratic rule is,’ he said.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin, D-Ill., called on Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito to recuse himself from any cases related to the 2020 election on Friday following a revelation that an upside-down flag was flown at his home a week after the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

‘Flying an upside-down American flag — a symbol of the so-called ‘Stop the Steal’ movement — clearly creates the appearance of bias,’ said Durbin in a statement.

‘Justice Alito should recuse himself immediately from cases related to the 2020 election and the January 6th insurrection, including the question of the former President’s immunity in U.S. v. Donald Trump, which the Supreme Court is currently considering,’ he added.

The outcome of former President Trump’s federal election interference case notably hinges on what the Supreme Court determines about his claim of immunity.

Durbin claimed, ‘The Court is in an ethical crisis of its own making, and Justice Alito and the rest of the Court should be doing everything in their power to regain public trust.’

The Illinois senator called the revelation ‘further proof’ that Congress should institute a code of conduct for the Supreme Court. He urged his colleagues to support the passage of the Supreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act.

‘Supreme Court justices should be held to the highest ethical standards, not the lowest,’ he said.

Fox News Digital reached out to the Supreme Court for comment from Alito but did not immediately receive a response.

In the days following the Capitol riot in 2021, in which supporters of Trump sought to prevent Congress from certifying the 2020 election, the home of Alito and his wife, Martha-Ann, was seen flying an upside down American flag, The New York Times reported. The positioning of a flag in such a way is understood to symbolize a nation in crisis, and it was adopted by some following the events of Jan. 6 to express resistance to the results of the 2020 election.

Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Committee Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., did not provide comment to Fox News Digital.

Alito recounted the situation to Fox News’ Shannon Bream, telling her that a neighborhood argument began in January 2021 after one resident put up a ‘F— Trump’ sign in close proximity to a school bus stop.

When his wife spoke to the neighbor about the profane sign, the conversation was not productive, he explained.

According to the justice, the same neighbor then took the disagreement further, placing a sign that attributed blame for the events of Jan. 6 personally to Martha-Ann.

Later, during a walk, a resident of the home with the signage started an argument with his wife and called her names, ‘including the C-word,’ Alito claimed.

He explained that her decision to hang the upside down flag on the property was a response to the evolving feud and that it only flew ‘for a short time.’

Alito said he didn’t believe it was his place to order his wife against doing this and characterized his neighbors as ‘very political.’
