A jury in U.S. District Court ordered the NFL to pay nearly $4.8 billion in damages Thursday after ruling that the league violated antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on a premium subscription service.

The jury awarded $4.7 billion in damages to the residential class and $96 million in damages to the commercial class.

The lawsuit covered 2.4 million residential subscribers and 48,000 businesses who paid for the package of out-of-market games from the 2011 through 2022 seasons on DirecTV. The lawsuit claimed the league broke antitrust laws by selling its package of Sunday games at an inflated price. The subscribers also say the league restricted competition by offering “Sunday Ticket” only on a satellite provider.

The NFL said it would appeal the verdict. That appeal would go to the 9th Circuit and then possibly the Supreme Court.

“We are disappointed with the jury’s verdict today in the NFL Sunday Ticket class action lawsuit,” the league said in a statement. “We continue to believe that our media distribution strategy, which features all NFL games broadcast on free over-the-air television in the markets of the participating teams and national distribution of our most popular games, supplemented by many additional choices including RedZone, Sunday Ticket and NFL+, is by far the most fan friendly distribution model in all of sports and entertainment.

“We will certainly contest this decision as we believe that the class action claims in this case are baseless and without merit.”

The jury of five men and three women deliberated for nearly five hours before reaching its decision.

“This case transcends football. This case matters,” plaintiffs attorney Bill Carmody said during Wednesday’s closing arguments. “It’s about justice. It’s about telling the 32 team owners who collectively own all the big TV rights, the most popular content in the history of TV — that’s what they have. It’s about telling them that even you cannot ignore the antitrust laws. Even you cannot collude to overcharge consumers. Even you can’t hide the truth and think you’re going to get away with it.”

The league maintained it has the right to sell “Sunday Ticket” under its antitrust exemption for broadcasting. The plaintiffs say that only covers over-the-air broadcasts and not pay TV.

DirecTV had “Sunday Ticket” from its inception in 1994 through 2022. The league signed a seven-year deal with Google’s YouTube TV that began with the 2023 season.

The lawsuit was originally filed in 2015 by the Mucky Duck sports bar in San Francisco but was dismissed in 2017. Two years later, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which has jurisdiction over California and eight other states, reinstated the case. Gutierrez ruled last year the case could proceed as a class action.

It’s been almost 20 years since the founding of Alphabet’s YouTube, and Hollywood still doesn’t really know what to do with it.

YouTube, which effectively invented user-generated content, claims a daunting share of overall media consumption. And it’s no longer just dominating the internet, it’s dominating the living room, too.

YouTube made up 9.7% of all viewership on connected and traditional TVs in the U.S. in May — the largest share of TV for a streaming platform ever reported by Nielsen’s monthly “The Gauge” report. Netflix ranked second, claiming 7.6% of viewership. Among streamers only, YouTube’s total viewership was close to 25% market share.

“We’re not talking about your mobile phone, your laptop, that I’m sure you see your kids using all the time, but on the biggest screen in the house, the TV,” said LightShed media analyst Rich Greenfield. “Every [media] executive has to be paying attention.”

But media companies such as Netflix, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery aren’t sure whether YouTube is friend or foe.

Some media executives see YouTube as a companion platform to subscription streaming services and cable TV — an unwieldy behemoth of non-narrative, creator-led content with a social media slant that doesn’t really fit the New York-Hollywood nexus of professional media. Others — even at times the same executives — view YouTube as an existential threat to the entertainment industry, stealing viewership from subscription streaming services and, with it, the cultural center of American youth.

Those competing truths have led media and entertainment companies to concoct a wide array of strategies to combat the growing threat.

The Biden administration on Wednesday said it will impose inflation penalties on 64 prescription drugs for the third quarter of this year, lowering costs for certain older Americans enrolled in Medicare. 

President Joe Biden has made lowering U.S. drug prices a key pillar of his health-care agenda and reelection platform for 2024. A provision of Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act requires drugmakers to pay rebates to Medicare, the federal health program for Americans over age 65, if they hike the price of a medication faster than the rate of inflation. 

It is separate from another provision under the law that allows Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug prices with manufacturers. On average, Americans pay two to three times more than patients in other developed nations for prescription drugs, according to the Biden administration.

Some patients will pay a lower coinsurance rate for the 64 drugs covered under Wednesday’s announcement, which fall under Medicare Part B, for the period from July 1 to Sept. 30 “since each drug company raised prices faster than the rate of inflation,” according to a release from the administration.

Some Medicare Part B patients may save as much as $4,593 per day if they use those drugs during the quarter, the release added.  

More than 750,000 Medicare patients use the drugs each year, according to the release. The medications treat conditions such as cancer, certain infections and a bone disease called osteoporosis.

“Without the Inflation Reduction Act, seniors were completely exposed to Big Pharma’s price hikes. Not anymore,” Neera Tanden, White House domestic policy advisor, said in the release.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services plans to send the first invoices to drugmakers in 2025 for the rebates owed to the program.

In December, Biden released a list of 48 prescription drugs that would be subject to inflation penalties during the first quarter of 2024.

Walgreens is planning potentially sweeping store closures as it faces what its CEO called a “challenging” environment for pharmacies and U.S. consumers.

The pharmacy chain on Thursday morning announced quarterly earnings that fell short of Wall Street expectations. Walgreens’ stock price dropped 22% on the day.

In an interview with CNBC, CEO Tim Wentworth said the company now forecasts weaker consumer spending for the rest of the year.

″We assumed…in the second half that the consumer would get somewhat stronger” but “that is not the case,’ Wentworth said. 

‘The consumer is absolutely stunned by the absolute prices of things, and the fact that some of them may not be inflating doesn’t actually change their resistance to the current pricing,’ he added. ‘So we’ve had to get really keen, particularly in discretionary things.’

Last month, Walgreens, following Target’s lead, announced plans to slash prices on some 1,300 items in response to better serve customers it said were increasingly under ‘financial strain.’

Wentworth didn’t state an exact number of closures, but implied it could be as much as 25% of the chain’s approximately 8,600 stores.

“75% of our stores drive 100% of our profitability today,” Wentworth said. “What that means is the others we take a hard look at, we are going to finalize a number that we will close.”

Walgreens has contended with difficulties for years.

The company’s share price has seen steady declines for about a decade, dropping from a peak of more than $95 a share in 2015 to less than $15 today. It’s reported reduced revenues from prescription drugs, and its retail offerings remain under pressure from both big-box chains and Amazon.com. And it already announced a plan to close 150 U.S. stores last summer.

Today, Walgreens is about one-third the size of chief rival, CVS, which has also been under pressure over the past two years.

Since the Covid 19 pandemic, Walgreens has seen a period of executive leadership turmoil: Wentworth was named CEO in October after his predecessor, Starbucks and Walmart veteran Rosalind Brewer, unexpectedly announced her departure from the role less than three years into the job.

A bright spot was its health-care segment, which topped revenue estimates. Walgreens views on-site medical services and specialty pharmacy offerings as critical to its ongoing push to transform from a major drugstore chain into a large health-care company.

As expected, Noah Lyles advanced to the semifinals in the 200 meters at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials.

Lyles easily won his preliminary heat with a time of 20.10.

The top six in each heat, plus the next three fastest times move on to the semifinals.

Lyles entered the trials with the fastest time in the 200 at 19.47. Lyles’ personal-best of 19.31 is an American record. The 26-year-old sprinter is the heavy favorite in the event.

Lyles already won gold in the 100 at the trials to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

He won the 100, 200 and was a member of Team USA’s gold-medal winning 4×100-relay squad at the 2023 world championships. He is seeking his first ever Olympic gold medal after winning the bronze at the Tokyo Olympics in the 200.

“After doing the triple at worlds, I know I’m ready for anything,” Lyles said this week. “All I know is I need to get sleep, and everything else will take care of itself.”

Erriyon Knighton, Christian Coleman, Kenny Bednarek qualify for next round in 200

Coleman, who finished in the dreaded fourth spot in the 100 at the trials, advanced to the semifinal round in the 200.

Running in the fourth heat, Coleman placed second with a time of 20.30 to make it into the semifinal round. Coleman finished behind Knighton, who won the fourth heat running a 20.15.

Bednarek placed first in the third heat, running a 20.28 to advance.

NEW YORK – Heart.

That’s what Bronny James’ selection in the second round of the NBA draft Thursday is about.

James’ physical heart, the one that sustained a sudden cardiac arrest 11 months ago while he worked out on Southern California’s campus.

And his metaphorical heart, the one that helped him get back on the basketball court and in position to be drafted after a life-threatening incident required a procedure to fix his congenital heart defect.

And our hearts, the hardened ones that can’t find the joy in a young adult reaching his dreams, and the warm hearts that can.

The Los Angeles Lakers selected James with the No. 55 pick in the second round of Thursday’s NBA draft, and Bronny will join his dad on the same team in an NBA first. Bronny, 19, is the oldest son of NBA superstar LeBron James, and they will become the first father-son combo to play in the league at the same time.

“My dream has always just been to put my name out, make a name for myself, and of course, you know, get to the NBA,” Bronny told reporters at the draft combine in Chicago in May.

Almost a year ago, Bronny’s basketball future was unclear after he survived the sudden cardiac arrest. Luckily for him, the heart defect could be repaired, allowing him to continue his basketball career.

Before the health scare, Bronny was moving up draft boards during his senior season of high school and during the summer. Some mock drafts had him as a first-rounder a year ago.

But after the cardiac arrest, his development was halted. He couldn’t play until cleared by doctors, and while his freshman season wasn’t derailed completely, it wasn’t a perfect year. He struggled at times and his stats didn’t stand out. At the combine, Bronny acknowledged the incident is ‘still lingering’ and he thinks about ‘everything that could happen.’

But he worked and made enough of an impression on scouts and executives that he left the draft combine as a potential second-round pick – a player with defensive skills, offensive upside, work ethic and coachability.

And now he gets to join his dad on the Lakers. It’s a cool, unique story even in a league where sons of ex-NBA players becoming NBA players is not unusual. But in the league at the same time? It’s a testament to LeBron’s amazing longevity at an elite level and his son’s ability to work for what he wanted.

It’s not the way Bronny thought it would go. But we don’t always get to choose how life unfolds. We do choose how to respond to what comes our way.

This is also another beginning to Bronny’s basketball career. Being LeBron’s son who plays basketball comes with advantages and disadvantages, and the family has undoubtedly had those discussions.

The NBA is meritocracy on the court. He’s just like any other rookie who was drafted in the second round. Bronny needs to earn his spot and his minutes. But you won’t be able to question his heart.

Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon broke through Thursday night, sweeping hockey’s top awards — the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award.

MacKinnon ranked second in the NHL and set a franchise record with 140 points. He led the league in even-strength points (92), multi-point games (44) and shots on goal (405) and recorded at least one point in his first 35 home games.

He had been a finalist for the Hart (writers vote) three previous times and the Lindsay (players vote) two times.

He picked up 137 out of 194 first-place votes and edged out two previous winners — Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov and Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid (three times) — for the Hart. Kucherov and Toronto Maple Leafs 69-goal scorer Auston Matthews were the other Lindsay finalists.

‘It could easily be any of you guys,’ MacKinnon said on stage after accepting the Hart. ‘I think everyone knows it’s such a toss-up this year. … Some of my favorite players ever have won this trophy, so super happy, excited to share with my teammates.’

Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck: He won the Jennings Trophy as the goaltender on the team allowing the fewest regular-season goals. Hellebuyck yielded three or fewer goals in 50 of his 60 appearances, including a pair of 10-game streaks with two or fewer goals against. He won the award in 2020 and was a finalist two other times, including last season.

Norris Trophy (defenseman)

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes: He led all defensemen with 75 assists and 92 points — breaking his franchise records for a defenseman — as the Canucks secured their first playoff berth since 2019‑20 and first division title since 2012-13. The first-time winner was named Canucks captain this season. His younger brother Luke finished third in rookie of the year voting.

Calder Trophy (rookie)

Chicago Blackhawks center Connor Bedard: The 2023 No. 1 overall pick led or tied for first among rookies in goals (22), assists (39) and points (61) despite missing 14 games with a broken jaw. He also led rookies in shots on goal (206) and takeaways (47). He was first on the Blackhawks in assists and points and tied for first in goals. He had a five-point game on March 12 against Anaheim and scored a lacrosse-style ‘Michigan’ goal on Dec. 23 against St. Louis.

Sha’Carri Richardson is on to the next round in the 200 meters at the US. Olympic track and field trials.

Richardson placed first in the opening round of the women’s 200. She ran a season-best 21.99 to qualify for the next round. It’s the second-fastest time in the world this year. The top six in each heat, plus the next three fastest times, move on to the semifinals.

The 24-year-old sprinter won gold in the 100 and placed third in the 200 at the 2023 world championships.

Gabby Thomas advances to semifinals

Thomas, the 2023 world championships silver medalist, qualified to the next round in the 200.

Thomas won the fourth heat, running a 22.11 to make it into the semifinal round. She came into the trials ranked No. 3 in the world in the 200.

The 27-year-old sprinter placed third in the 200 at the Tokyo Olympics.

McKenzie Long advances to semifinals

Long is looking to redeem herself after a disappointing performance in the 100.

Long ran a 22.49 and finished first in the second heat in the opening round of the 200 to advance to the semifinals. One of USA TODAY Sports’ college athletes to watch, Long didn’t make it to the final in the 100 meters.

At this year’s NCAA championships, Long won the 100, 200 and was on Ole Miss’ gold medal-winning 4×100-relay team.

Friday will be a homecoming for Macklin Celebrini.

Celebrini, who’s expected to be selected No. 1 overall by the San Jose Sharks in Las Vegas, played for the Junior Sharks and his father, Rick, is vice president of health and performance for the nearby Golden State Warriors of the NBA.

The younger Celebrini has been the top prospect in NHL Central Scouting’s rankings all season. He excelled at Boston University and received the Hobey Baker Award despite being the youngest player in college hockey.

A couple other college hockey players could go early in the first round: Michigan State defenseman Artyom Levshunov and Denver University defenseman Zeev Buium, whose team won this year’s NCAA title.

There have been moves before this year’s draft with the Sharks and Buffalo Sabres swapping first-round picks and the Ottawa Senators sending a first-rounder to the Boston Bruins in the Linus Ullmark trade.

Which draft prospects have famous relatives?

Iginla, the son of Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla, has the most famous bloodline. But the sons of former NHL players Saku Koivu (Aatos), Miroslav Satan (Miro) and Derek Plante (Max) are also in the draft pool.

Celebrini’s brother, Aiden, is a Canucks draft pick. Adam Jiricek (David), Buium (Shai) and Cole Hutson (Lane) are among those with brothers who have been drafted.

A jury ruled against the NFL on Thursday in a long-running legal battle – which likely still is not complete – over the cost of the DirecTV ‘Sunday Ticket’ broadcast package, delivering a setback that would cost the league billions of dollars if not later reversed.

The NFL was ordered to pay $96 million to commercial ‘Sunday Ticket’ subscribers and $4.7 billion to residential subscribers.

The verdict, which was delivered in U.S. District Court in the Central District of California, is expected to be appealed by the NFL.

“We are disappointed with the jury’s verdict today in the NFL Sunday Ticket class action lawsuit,’ the NFL said in a statement on Thursday. ‘We continue to believe that our media distribution strategy, which features all NFL games broadcast on free over-the-air television in the markets of the participating teams and national distribution of our most popular games, supplemented by many additional choices including RedZone, Sunday Ticket and NFL+, is by far the most fan friendly distribution model in all of sports and entertainment. The trial began June 6 in Los Angeles, with juror deliberations starting Wednesday.

The class action case alleged that the NFL violated antitrust law by capping distribution and limiting competition, offering “Sunday Ticket” only on DirecTV, a satellite provider. The case also alleged that this allowed DirecTV to charge customers artificially inflated prices for “Sunday Ticket.”

An expert for the plaintiffs estimated that at least 2.4 million customers were in the class, while putting the commercial class, including businesses like sports bars, hotels and restaurants, at 48,000 subscribers. The classes include DirecTV subscribers who purchased “Sunday Ticket” from June 2011 through February 2023.

In a January 2024 filing, plaintiffs said they were entitled to damages of up to $7.01 billion.

The NFL had denied any wrongdoing and defended its distribution model for “Sunday Ticket,” which it classifies as a premium product.

U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez had overseen the case for several years. Previously, he had ruled in favor of the NFL, dismissing the case, though it was reinstated in 2019 in an appeals court.

According to the Associated Press, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, the chairman of the NFL media owned and operated committee, testified last week. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also testified June 17, and former CBS Sports (Sean McManus) and Fox Sports (Larry Jones) executives also took the stand.

According to the Associated Press, this case began in 2015, when a sports bar in San Francisco, The Mucky Duck, filed a lawsuit. The case was dismissed two years later but revived in 2019 when the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated it. In 2023, Gutierrez had ruled that the case could proceed as a class action.

DirecTV had carried “Sunday Ticket” from its launch in 1994 through the 2022 season. In December 2022, however, Google, the parent company of YouTube TV, secured an exclusive, seven-year contract worth an average of $2 billion per year, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The 2023 season was YouTube TV’s first season offering “Sunday Ticket.” Neither Google nor YouTube TV were listed as defendants in the class action trial.
