Last year’s marquee non-conference games more than lived up to expectations by helping to shape the regular season and the makeup of the College Football Playoff.

Texas beat Alabama — way back when the two programs were in different leagues — and rode that victory to a top-four finish and playoff berth. Florida State’s win against LSU was the first step to an ACC championship and the program’s most successful season in nearly a decade. Colorado beat Nebraska to become the biggest story in the sport … and won just two more times the rest of the way.

The value of non-conference play could be impacted by the expanded playoff, which gives teams a little more room for error and makes these early-season matchups seem a bit less do-or-die for the top postseason contenders. But there is no shortage of eye-popping pairings starting right off the bat in August, including a handful of humdingers on the first full weekend of the year.

Clemson vs. Georgia, Aug. 31 (Atlanta)

The second season-opening meeting in four years between the two heavyweights shouldn’t follow the same script as the 2021 matchup, an ugly 10-3 Georgia win that laid bare Clemson’s deep-seeded offensive woes. Look for the Tigers to improve thanks to increased experience in Garrett Riley’s scheme and the projected development of returning starter Cade Klubnik at quarterback. The Bulldogs will remain very difficult to unseat as the early favorite for the national title, especially with the game being played in a friendly Mercedes-Benz Stadium environment.

Penn State at West Virginia, Aug. 31

After saving coach Neal Brown’s job with a nine-win 2023 season, the Mountaineers aim at a conference title in the new-look Big 12. Beating the rival Nittany Lions would validate last year’s growth and paint West Virginia as a definite Top 25 team and a potential playoff threat. It might be a bigger game for Penn State, which could make the playoff as an at-large with two Big Ten losses but would have its back against the wall with a loss to open the year. This is just the second meeting in the longtime series since 1992. The Nittany Lions won 38-15 last year and own a 49-9-2 edge in the rivalry.

Notre Dame at Texas A&M, Aug. 31

The Mike Elko era at A&M kicks off with a bang against an opponent that has the pieces to run the table in the regular season. A win would quickly justify the early hype around Elko’s hiring and vault the Aggies way up the Top 25 rankings. That might be easier said than done: Notre Dame still has to work out some kinks — getting new quarterback Riley Leonard ready to go is hugely important — but the Fighting Irish are the more complete team. How they handle the tough environment of Kyle Field is critical.

Southern California vs. LSU, Sept. 1 (Las Vegas)

LSU is flying slightly under the radar in the SEC this preseason, overshadowed by Georgia, Alabama and Texas. That could change with a dominant win against USC at a neutral venue in Las Vegas. While expected to improve on defense after two very rough years to open coach Lincoln Riley’s tenure, USC still has to prove itself heading into the program’s Big Ten debut. LSU loses a Heisman Trophy winner in Jayden Daniels but has high hopes for new starter Garrett Nussmeier and the offense as a whole.

Texas at Michigan, Sept. 7

This is the biggest non-conference game of the year. Even if Michigan takes a step back as expected, the defending national champions could upend the early playoff chase by handing Texas a road loss. The fallout from a Michigan win would impact the perception of the SEC and Big Ten, a big deal given that both leagues will have multiple teams in the mix for at-large playoff bids. While the loser wouldn’t be eliminated from the mix by any means, the winner will have a huge tiebreaker to show the selection committee in early December.

Tennessee vs. North Carolina State, Sept. 7

This meeting in Charlotte feels bigger for N.C. State, a top-tier ACC contender with the roster to crack 10 wins for just the second time in program history. Beating a very good Tennessee team would also boost the credibility of the ACC and give the Wolfpack a shot at the top 12 even without a conference title. This will be a tough early test for new Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava and a vital game for the Volunteers as a whole given matchups down the line against Oklahoma, Alabama and Georgia.

Colorado at Nebraska, Sept. 7

After a bit of a mulligan year for new coaches Deion Sanders and Matt Rhule, this rekindled rivalry takes on a deeper meaning after an offseason of roster development for both programs. Even if the Buffaloes have received miles more national attention, the Cornhuskers have done a much better job building depth through traditional recruiting and the portal, giving them a great shot at earning what would be the biggest win of Rhule’s tenure. Much will depend on whether true freshman QB Dylan Raiola of Nebraska can keep pace with counterpart Shedeur Sanders.

Alabama at Wisconsin, Sept. 14

Alabama gets to ease into the Kalen DeBoer era with home games against Western Kentucky and South Florida — though the Bulls gave the Tide all they could handle last year — before this road trip to Madison. Those tune-up games should help Jalen Milroe and the offense get on the same page. Wisconsin expects to be better in Luke Fickell’s second year but will be tested by a schedule that ranks among the toughest in the Big Ten.

Oregon at Oregon State, Sept. 14

The Civil War moves to non-conference play with Oregon’s move to the Big Ten and the disintegration of the 12-team Pac-12. The Ducks and Beavers have never met in September across 127 meetings and have played in October only three times: in 1895, 1937 and 1945. There’s never been any lack of energy around this rivalry, especially with the pair splitting their last four meetings as part of the Pac-12. But this one may be even more frenzied than usual given what happened over the past year.

Florida State at Notre Dame, Nov. 9

And we’ll have to wait until November for a non-conference game that could profoundly impact the race for one of the playoff’s seven at-large bids. Notre Dame could head into this weekend with some latitude in the playoff race thanks to a friendlier-than-usual schedule that takes a breather after the opener at Texas A&M. In contrast, the Seminoles will have already taken on Memphis, Clemson, Miami and North Carolina, the final three during a four-game span leading into this contest in South Bend.

The International Olympic Committee said Thursday morning that Romania can award gymnast Ana Barbosu a bronze medal, opening the door for what Romanian officials have said will be a medal ceremony Friday in the midst of the highly controversial worldwide sports drama.

“The FIG (International Gymnastics Federation) adjusted ranking is based on a final CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport) award, which is binding on all the parties,” the IOC said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY Sports. “While a challenge in the Swiss Federal Supreme Court is still possible, the CAS award is immediately enforceable and Ms. Barbosu is entitled to receive the bronze medal.”

American Jordan Chiles is in the United States and still has possession of the bronze medal that was awarded to her in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics, two people with knowledge of the situation who did not want to be identified have told USA TODAY Sports.

There are no plans for Chiles to give the bronze medal back as U.S. officials say they plan to appeal what the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee said were “significant procedural errors” by CAS. That appeal would presumably go to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.

The USOPC said in a statement Wednesday night that from August 6-9, “CAS sent crucial communications to erroneous email addresses at USOPC and USAG (USA Gymnastics), an error not corrected until August 9—three days after filing, two days past the deadline to submit objections, and less than 24 hours before the hearing. This deprived us of adequate time to respond meaningfully or gather necessary evidence. We informed CAS of our objections immediately.”

2024 Paris Olympics: Follow USA TODAY’s coverage of the biggest names and stories of the Games.

Since then, U.S. officials produced a time-stamped video showing the U.S. appeal of Chiles’ score was filed 47 seconds after her score was given, within the one-minute deadline — not four seconds after the deadline as was presented at the CAS hearing. CAS said it could not re-open the case despite the conclusive video evidence that showed Chiles in fact did deserve the bronze medal. ‘Our objections have since been validated by new evidence indicating administrative errors by FIG and mishandlings by CAS, which would have been impossible to raise at the time of the rushed hearing. In short, we were denied a meaningful opportunity to be heard,” the USOPC said.

In the midst of this burgeoning controversy, U.S. and Romanian officials offered to give both Chiles and Barbosu bronze medals, but FIG refused. Now, the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee is moving ahead on its own.

This rush to put on a medal ceremony comes in stark contrast to the just-concluded Kamila Valieva doping scandal, in which various international sports organizations and anti-doping agencies took so much time in the case that the U.S. and Japanese figure skating teams finally received their gold and silver medals at the Paris Summer Olympics 2½ years to the day after their competition ended at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Former NASCAR Cup Series champion Kurt Busch was arrested for DWI, reckless driving and speeding in Iredell County, North Carolina, late Tuesday night.

The 46-year-old was pulled over by police shortly after 11:30 p.m. ET in Mooresville, North Carolina, for driving 63 mph in a 45 mph zone. According to reports, Busch exhibited obvious signs of intoxication, with a ‘strong odor of alcohol coming from his breath” and “red glassy eyes.” When questioned, the retired NASCAR star admitted he had been drinking.

Busch’s blood alcohol level, which registered 0.17, according to reports, was more than twice the state’s legal limit of 0.08. He was released from the Iredell County Detention Center early Wednesday morning after signing a promise to appear in court on Sept. 19.

“I’m very disappointed in myself and I apologize to my family, racing family, and to my fans,” Busch said in a statement. “I will work with the authorities to rectify the situation and work with the county to make it a safer place in the future.”

Busch last raced in the Cup Series in the summer of 2022, finishing 10th at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on July 17. The following week, Busch suffered a concussion during a hard crash in qualifying at Pocono Raceway. He missed the remainder of the 2022 season, while dealing with concussion-related symptoms.

In October 2022, Busch announced he would not race full-time in 2023, and he officially announced his retirement on Aug. 26, 2023.

Busch began his Cup Series career in 2000 and won the season championship in 2004. He earned 34 wins during his 23-year career, with his last coming at Kansas Speedway on May 15, 2022, while driving for 23XI Racing, where he continues to have a consulting role.

The Las Vegas native is the older brother of current NASCAR driver and two-time series champion Kyle Busch.

LeBron James and Bronny James’ first chance to become the first father-son duo to play in the NBA at the same time – and for the same team no less – comes on opening night when the Los Angeles Lakers play host to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Oct. 22.

TNT will televise that game.

LeBron, who turns 40 on Dec. 30, and Bronny, who turns 20 on Oct. 6 and was the 55th pick by the Lakers in the second round of the June draft, will have other opportunities if it doesn’t work out in that game.

There’s no guarantee that LeBron and Bronny play in the season opener, but since the G League season doesn’t start until November, the Lakers may try to make history early in the NBA season and get it out of the way so that it’s not a lingering distraction.

Here are the Lakers’ first 10 games:

When will LeBron and Bronny play in first NBA game together?

Oct. 22: Minnesota Timberwolves at Los Angeles Lakers, 10 p.m. ET, TNT
Oct. 25: Phoenix Suns at Los Angeles Lakers, 10 p.m. ET, ESPN
Oct. 26: Sacramento Kings at Los Angeles Lakers, 10:30 p.m. ET, NBA TV

Former President Trump will have bulletproof glass surrounding his podium for outdoor events going forward, a federal law enforcement source briefed on the planning told Fox News.

Indoor events, meanwhile, will not involve the same level of protection, the source confirmed.

The additional level of protection comes after an assassination attempt on the former president during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania last month.

The president was addressing the open-air crowd, just minutes into his speech, when a gunman fired at him from the rooftop of a nearby building.

Trump managed to just barely turn his head and duck beneath the podium. A Secret Service member killed the gunman just seconds after he opened fire.

Trump was struck in the ear but avoided serious injury. One spectator in the audience was killed and two others were injured.

The security failure has brought heavy scrutiny on the Secret Service, which had been responsible for coordinating with local law enforcement.

The fury over the security lapse mounted after it was revealed that law enforcement had identified the gunman – later identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks – as suspicious an hour before the rally began, but lost track of him.

Crooks was able to scale the roof of a building owned by AGR International Inc., a supplier of automation equipment for the glass and plastic packaging industry, and fire an estimated eight shots with an AR-15-style rifle.

A partnership between Russia and Iran is allegedly deepening, according to the Pentagon.

In a press conference on Thursday, Deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh responded to a journalist’s question regarding a recent meeting between leaders of the two nations.

‘So I can’t speculate on, you know, on that visit, I would say that I think, separately, we’ve seen a deepening cooperation and relationship between Russia and Iran as Russia continues to, engage in its unlawful war in Ukraine,’ said Singh.

‘So, you know, we’ve we’ve seen that deepening partnership.’

‘We’ve seen Russia continue to seek weapons out from Iran. While I can speculate on what this visit entails, you know, we’ve seen these visits of leaders, happen over the course of the last two years,’ Singh added.

Russia has recently promised missile support to Iran after a visit by a defense minister to the Middle Eastern nation.

Singh clarified, ‘in terms of how this plays, you know, into the Middle East. Look, Iran has a choice. I think we’ve been very clear in our messaging when it comes to the defense of Israel. We are going to stand in the defense of Israel just as we did, you know, on April 13th.’

The United States has recently expanded its presence in the Middle East, sending the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to the region.

According to the Pentagon, it is unclear exactly where these additional American defense resources will be located.

Vice President Kamala Harris’ supporters want her to keep in line with President Biden on some policy points but not others, several of them said Thursday.

Fox News Digital spoke with Democrats who turned out at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland for Biden and Harris’ first joint appearance since she became the party’s presidential nominee.

Their speech came hours after an Axios report said Harris wants to create ‘distance’ between her own campaign and Biden on the economy, which he had struggled with in terms of approval ratings for much of his term.

‘I would say there are some things that, you know, that were going well, and there are some things that are needing to change,’ said Harris supporter Brian Galbraith.

However, he pointed out that the poor economic and inflationary outlook that plagued the first half of Biden’s term was a global phenomenon after the COVID-19 pandemic, rather than something directly caused by his policies.

‘While we have been impacted significantly by the recent inflation, we need to take a look around and realize that everywhere has been. So, no matter who, Democrat or Republican, I think we still would have been facing these issues,’ he said.

Another voter named Constance suggested she was happy with Biden’s economic policy but wanted to see Harris lean more into voter access issues.

‘I want to see her try to follow some of his, but I also want to see her come into her own, like kind of a combination,’ Constance said. ‘I want to continue to see the economy do well. I want [Harris] to really focus on voting rights and human rights.’

Other Harris supporters suggested there were issues outside the economy they wanted to see the vice president diverge on.

‘There are things that I would like to see her change,’ another woman said. ‘I would like her to make it easier for immigrants to enter the country legally. I think there are a lot of poverty reduction programs that we need to have in place.’

A speech attendee who identified herself as Arvia Ross told Fox News Digital, ‘I’d like to see her [distance herself]. … I would like to see her have a mind of her own on certain things.’

Harris supporters Johnny and Nicolas also wanted Harris to mix her own ideas in with the line Democrats have been toeing.

‘I think it should be a combination of both,’ Johnny said. ‘I think she can bring her own ideas to the table.’

The latter told Fox News Digital, ‘She’s free to include her own policies … not following the line of leadership and whatnot. But I know for the party and as a Democrat, a Democrat has certain policies that need to be focused on, so it should be a mix of the two.’

Harris and Biden appeared together Thursday to roll out the administration’s strategy for Medicare drug price cuts.

Biden was met with chants of ‘Thank you, Joe’ when he and Harris took the stage.

Earlier, Biden told Fox News White House reporter Peter Doocy Harris is ‘not going to’ distance herself from his economic policies when asked whether it bothers him that she would do so.

WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris plans to propose the first-ever federal ban on “corporate price-gouging in the food and grocery industries,” her campaign announced late Wednesday.

“There’s a big difference between fair pricing in competitive markets, and excessive prices unrelated to the costs of doing business,” the Harris campaign said in a statement. “Americans can see that difference in their grocery bills.”

The proposed ban is part of a broader economic policy platform that the Democratic presidential nominee plans to unveil Friday at a campaign rally in battleground North Carolina.

Harris will also pledge that if elected president, she will direct her administration to increase scrutiny of potential mergers between large supermarkets and food producers, “specifically for the risk that the proposed merger would raise grocery prices for consumers,” her campaign said.

This package of regulatory proposals is one of the Harris campaign’s earliest efforts to outline an economic platform that is independent of President Joe Biden’s agenda.

Before Biden abruptly dropped out of the race in July and endorsed Harris, he had spent more than a year campaigning for reelection and blaming corporate greed for consumer prices driven higher by inflation.

Harris’ plan still sits firmly within the overall Biden approach to regulation, however, which has prioritized consumer protections across a range of industries and sued to block several massive corporate mergers.

In March, the White House launched the Strike Force on Unfair and Illegal Pricing, a joint initiative between the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission.

On Friday, Harris will single out the meat industry, saying that “soaring meat prices have accounted for a large part of Americans’ higher grocery bills, even as meat processing companies registered record-breaking profits following the pandemic,” according to the statement from her campaign.

The Democratic presidential nominee will also unveil proposals intended to bring down consumer costs in two other sectors where corporations have aggressively exercised their pricing powers: prescription drugs and housing.

Harris’ speech will come two days after her opponent, former President Donald Trump, gave his own economic policy speech in North Carolina, where he blamed Harris for the high price of consumer goods.

“You’re paying the price for [Harris’] liberal extremism at the gas pump, at the grocery counter, and on your mortgage bill,” Trump said in Asheville.

Nearly a month into her campaign, Harris has already erased Trump’s lead over Biden in national and swing state polls.

But Trump still maintains his longstanding advantage over Democrats when it comes to which candidate voters believe would be best for the economy.
