Corrections and clarifications: An earlier version of this story misspelled Ayami Sato’s name.

Tennis legend Billie Jean King, a minority owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers who helped launch the Professional Women’s Hockey League, is now joining Grassroots Baseball.

Grassroots Baseball is announcing Monday that King is an executive producer for “See Her Be Her,’ a documentary on women’s baseball around the globe.

King, who played catch with her dad and baseball with her brother, Randy Moffitt – who pitched 12 years in the major leagues – gave up her dream of being a professional baseball player when she attended a Pacific Coast League game between the Los Angeles Angels and Hollywood Stars.

“The thrill of being at the ballpark quickly wore off when it dawned on me that all the players down on the field were men,’ King said in a foreword to the book, “See Her Be Her,’’ that will be released in early October. “There I was, a girl who was good at sports, realizing that because I was female, I could not grow up to be a baseball player.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

“It crushed me.’

Baseball’s loss was tennis’ gain, with King winning 39 Grand Slam titles – 12 in singles and 27 in doubles. She was the first female athlete to be awarded with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.

Now, joining sports photojournalist Jean Fruth and former National Baseball Hall of Fame president Jeff Idelson as producers for the film, she is hoping to increase the visibility of girls and women playing baseball around the world, creating opportunities to breaking through another barrier one day.

“Any time you can be ‘the first’ is a major accomplishment, you just never want to be the last,’ King said in an e-mail to USA TODAY Sports. ‘If we can create a role for one woman, we can create a place for more women. It’s so important we provide an opportunity and a pathway for every young girl to have the dream they can be a professional baseball player, or have a professional career in Major League Baseball.’

The film, which will premiere on the MLB Network during the World Series – with the book scheduled to be released a few weeks earlier – will provide some hope for females who want to play professional baseball. It will feature the stories of seven different women including Lillian Nayiga, a catcher and shortstop in Uganda, along with Ayami Sato, regarded in Japan as the world’s best female pitcher.

“Baseball was my first true love,’ said King, “but I never got the chance to play because I was a girl. It is my hope that “See Her Be Her’’ will encourage girls and women to pursue their dreams no matter what others say is possible, and that one day soon women once again have a league of their own.’

Besides, with women having success in other sports, including the physical game of hockey, why not baseball?

“The success of the PWHL, the strengthening of the NWSL and the reemergence of the WNBA are good indicators that with the right approach,’’ King told USA TODAY Sports, “we could see a sustainable women’s professional baseball league someday. Women’s sports is finally being seen as a quality investment, and not a charitable cause.

“We are moving in the right direction, but we are not done yet.”

More Black Americans are planning to make their voices heard on Election Day now that Vice President Kamala Harris has replaced President Biden as the Democratic nominee, according to a Monday poll.

The Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that 69% of Black Americans say they are ‘absolutely certain to vote’ on Election Day, compared to 62% in April. Meanwhile, a similar New York Times poll found Sunday that 56% of Black Americans said they were ‘almost certain’ to vote, with an additional 33% saying they were ‘very likely’ to vote.

The Post poll found that Harris’ candidacy has had the largest impact on young Black voters, particularly women. The share of Black Americans under 30 who plan to vote has risen 15 points from April, to 47%. Meanwhile, intent to vote among Black women under 40 rose by 18 points since April, to 57%.

Among Black registered voters, 82% say they favor Harris over Trump, according to the Post, while only 12% say they favor Trump. In the Times poll, 78% of Black Americans said they favored Trump, and Trump scored 14%.

The Post and Ipsos conducted the poll from Aug. 23 to Sept. 3, surveying 1,083 Black Americans. The poll advertises a margin of error of 3.2%.

Harris holds solid or dominating majority support from Black voters when it comes to the issues as well. Only when it comes to Israel’s war with Hamas does she lose out on a majority, with 49% of Black Americans saying they trust her to handle the issue. A striking 28% said neither candidate could be trusted on the topic.

Trump’s best performance is on immigration, where 19% of Black Americans say he is best to handle the issue. Harris maintains a commanding 55% support on the issue, however.

The poll lands just one day before Harris and Trump are set to square off in their first presidential debate on Tuesday. The pair’s campaigns have already laid the groundwork for lines of attack.

Trump is expected to lean into Harris’ role in the 2021 withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, which saw 13 soldiers killed in a suicide bombing. Several relatives of those soldiers have endorsed Trump and criticized Harris in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Harris’ campaign sought to counter that narrative this week with a letter from 10 retired generals and admirals saying President Biden and Harris had done their best with a poor situation left to them by Trump’s own administration.

: Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., is writing to Attorney General Merrick Garland to question the legitimacy of special counsel Jack Smith’s continued probing of former President Donald Trump.

Gaetz, one of Trump’s closest allies in Congress, asked Garland for ‘any written authorization’ or other documentation regarding Smith’s continued efforts despite his case against the ex-president getting thrown out by a federal judge in July.

‘On August 27, 2024, Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a superseding indictment against former President Donald Trump in federal district court in the District of Columbia. One day later, he was arguing before the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, attempting to overturn a federal district judge’s finding that he was unlawfully appointed by you,’ Gaetz wrote in the brief letter.

‘It is unclear what authority Special Counsel Smith has to file either of these briefs or to provide services to the Department of Justice.’

Smith’s appointment as special counsel was deemed unlawful by Florida-based U.S. Judge Eileen Cannon, who said his lack of Senate confirmation for the role made him illegitimate.

Cannon, who was appointed by Trump, had been overseeing Smith’s prosecution of the former president over his handling of classified documents found at Mar-a-Lago.

Smith filed a response with the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, arguing Cannon was wrong in her assessment of the special counsel role, arguing ‘precedent and history’ were on his side, as well as a ‘long tradition of special-counsel appointments by Attorneys General and Congress’ endorsement of the practice.’

Amid that court battle, Smith also filed a superseding indictment in a separate probe he is conducting into the ex-president, investigating whether Trump conspired to overturn the 2020 election. Smith had filed an amended indictment in that prosecution after the recent Supreme Court ruling that presidents are afforded wider immunity privileges.

However, Gaetz questioned whether Smith even had the legal footing to file either of those motions.

His letter asked Garland whether he consulted the deputy attorney general and existing public integrity guidelines before Smith filed the superseding indictment.

If so, Gaetz asked him to ‘provide any records of the Deputy Attorney General’s Office or the Office of the Attorney General authorizing the Office of Special Counsel to file the Aug. 27, 2024, superseding indictment.’

Trump has so far denied any wrongdoing in any of the prosecutions against him.

His congressional allies like Gaetz have been key defenders – Gaetz has heaped skepticism on Trump’s legal trials, and House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., has filed a flurry of ethics complaints against judges overseeing Trump cases in New York.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., another Trump ally, has spearheaded GOP pressure in the House to defund Smith’s office.

It is not fully clear yet how Trump’s criminal and civil proceedings will affect his bid for re-election, with less than two months until Election Day.

The Department of Justice did not immediately return a request for comment on Gaetz’s letter.

Any strategy that trades stocks needs some sort of market timing mechanism to identify bull and bear markets. Typically, stock strategies are fully invested during bull markets because risk is acceptable. Strategies move to cash during bear markets because risk is above average. Preserving capital during bear markets is important to long-term outperformance (see SystemTrader).

Here is a simple idea for a market timing mechanism. First, use the S&P 500 SPDR (SPY) to represent the US stock market. SPY is based on the S&P 500, which is the most widely used benchmark for US stocks. Second, apply a long-term trend indicator for broad market timing. The chart below shows SPY with the Trend Composite. This indicator aggregates signals in five trend-following indicators. It is currently at +5 and still signaling a long-term uptrend (bull market). Note that this indicator is part of the TIP Indicator Edge Plugin for StockCharts ACP.

The chart above starts in 2022. Notice that the Trend Composite was mostly negative (bearish) in 2022. Strategies trading stocks would have been mostly in cash during this bear market and this would have preserved capital. The Trend Composite turned positive in February 2023 and has been mostly positive the last 19 months. It spent three weeks in negative territory from late October to mid November 2023 (whipsaw). Strategies trading stocks would have been mostly long during this period and participated in the bull run.

Strategies should have well-defined rules governing decisions. Stocks moved sharply lower last week, but the Trend Composite has yet to turn negative and signal a bear market. Similarly, the Composite Breadth Model, which times the market for our Dual Momentum Rotation Strategies, has yet to turn bearish. Thus, our strategies remain invested in stocks showing strong upside momentum. They will move to cash when a bear signal triggers. Click here to learn more.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — J.K. Dobbins heard all the naysayers after an injury plagued start to his career. However, the 25-year-old running back was smiling at his critics following an impressive Los Angeles Chargers debut.

Dobbins rushed 10 times for 135 yards and a touchdown in the Chargers’ 22-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in what was his first game since suffering a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 1 of last season.

“I’m blessed, man, the Lord put me in the position, and I was ready for it,” Dobbins said to USA TODAY Sports. “He answered my prayers, you know. And I keep getting better each and every week, you know, get more in shape, and I’ll be ready to go.”

Injuries have marred Dobbins’ NFL career thus far. He was originally a 2020 second-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens. Dobbins sustained a season-ending knee injury in the 2021 preseason and was limited to just eight games in 2022 due to knee issues. Then the injury bug struck his Achilles in the 2023 opener. His injuries led him to a one-year prove-it deal with the Chargers in April.

Dobbins’ season debut in 2024 was injury-free and stellar. His 135 rushing yards marked his second-highest single-game rushing total and fifth 100-yard game of his career. He scored the Chargers’ first touchdown on a 12-yard run during which he broke two tackles on the way to pay dirt. In the second half, Dobbins had a 46-yard run and a 61-yard scamper that provided evidence that’s he’s recovered from a slew of injuries.

“He played a great game. We love J.K. He brings energy every day to practice and in the games. We block for him with our everything that we have,” Chargers WR Joshua Palmer said to USA TODAY Sports. “It’s great to see him shine.”

While at Michigan, Jim Harbaugh coached against Dobbins when the running back was at Ohio State. Dobbins rushed for 211 yards and four touchdowns in a 2019 game against the Wolverines. In Week 1, Harbaugh gave Dobbins a game ball.

“J.K. Dobbins, what an incredible game,” the Chargers head coach said. “Breaking those two long runs and just the tough yards.”

Harbaugh coached teams typically play a physical brand of football and attempt to establish the run. The team ran the football 27 times for 176 yards. While Justin Herbert had 26 passing attempts versus Las Vegas.

Dobbins, who’s never played a full 17-game regular season, aspires to remain healthy this year and produce in a Chargers offensive scheme that figures to be a run-oriented. The running back’s battled through plenty of adversity in his career, but he had a smile on his face in what he says was an early Week 1 message and hopefully an injury-free season.

“It means a lot to me. I’ve had unfortunate injuries,” Dobbins said. “And everyone thought I was finished, but that’s not how I’m wired. I grew up with hard workers. I grew up not with a rich family and stuff like that. So only thing I know to do is just keep working (and) keep fighting. Keep a smile on my face too while doing it. … We’re gonna be a good team and you know, I’m back. I’m back and ready to go.”

And then they were even.

The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, longtime sparring partners in the National League East, suddenly find themselves in a 19-game sprint for their playoff lives. They enter this week all square with 78-65 records and tied for the third and final NL wild-card spot – and on the upswing in USA TODAY Sports’ power rankings.

Playoff contention is a birthright for the Braves, who have won six consecutive NL East titles but have all but ceded this year’s crown to Philadelphia. But their very playoff lives have been threatened by a nine-game Mets winning streak that briefly vaulted New York into sole possession of the No. 3 slot. Unless either team gets hot and chases down Arizona and/or San Diego, the playoffs won’t be big enough for the two of them.

They will meet one more time, Sept. 24-26 at Atlanta.

Aaron Rodgers takes center stage again on Monday Night Football. Let’s hope this season doesn’t begin like his last one.

Rodgers and the New York Jets will face the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football to end Week 1 of the 2024-25 NFL season.

Rodgers returns from an Achilles tear he suffered during the Monday Night Football opener last season, when he could only play four snaps before being sidelined for the rest of the year.

The 49ers begin their season after a failed Super Bowl run last year and an emotional week, following a harrowing incident involving rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall, who is recovering from a gunshot wound during an attempted robbery.

When is the New York Jets at San Francisco 49ers game?

The 49ers host the Jets Monday night at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, at 8:20 p.m. ET (5:20 p.m local).

How to watch Jets at 49ers on Monday Night Football

The game between the San Francisco 49ers at New York Jets will be broadcast nationally on ABC and ESPN.

Will there be a live stream of the New York Jets at San Francisco 49ers?

The Monday Night Football game can be streamed on ESPN+ and on Fubo.

What are the betting odds for New York Jets at San Francisco 49ers?

The 49ers (-200) are the moneyline favorites over the Jets (+165) with an over/under set at 43.5 points and a 3.5-point spread, according to BETMGM.

Spotlight on the quarterbacks: Aaron Rodgers vs. Brock Purdy

Aaron Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, returns to action after his Achilles tear spoiled his debut with the Jets following 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers. Will Rodgers return to his MVP form or play like a 40-year-old? While Tom Brady may have construed the latter part of that question, Rodgers must prove he is worth all the fuss in New York. He’ll lean on running back Breece Hall and wide receiver Garrett Wilson to find his form again on offense.

Brock Purdy, 24, returns for his third season as the 49ers starting quarterback. He may still have plenty to prove to naysayers questioning his ability, but he has a 17-4 record during the regular season and 4-2 playoff record through two seasons. With one of the most talented cores in the NFL with running back Christian McCaffrey, receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk, and left tackle Trent Williams, Purdy should help the 49ers excel again offensively this season.

Player to watch: 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey

It’s easy to list Rodgers here for obvious reasons, but the 49ers’ star running back has been dealing with a calf injury for much of training camp. McCaffrey’s effectiveness, depending on his workload, could force the 49ers to depend more on Purdy in the opener if he’s not healthy enough. Although the rest during training camp should help McCaffrey, it’s still something worth monitoring on Monday night.

Predictions for Monday’s Jets at 49ers game

Here are the USA TODAY Sports staff’s predictions for the Monday Night Football opener:

Jarrett Bell: Jets 20-19
Chris Bumbaca: Jets 22-19
Nate Davis: Jets 24-20
Safid Deen: 49ers 27-17
Tyler Dragon: 49ers 23-20
Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz: Jets 24-23
Lorenzo Reyes: 49ers 21-18

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua missed the entire second half of the team’s 26-20 overtime loss to the Detroit Lions on ‘Sunday Night Football’ with a knee injury.

Nacua limped off the field after making a sliding catch on a third-down play in the first half. He got up slowly and limped to the sideline before he was looked at by the training staff. The broadcast showed him trying to run while the Lions were on offense. Nacua returned to the field briefly on the Rams’ next possession, but he was unable to continue and was ruled him out at halftime.

After the game, Rams head coach Sean McVay said that he did not have any additional information on Nacua’s injury.

Nacua missed a significant amount of time during training camp due to a knee injury, but returned to practice on Aug. 26 and was listed as a full participant in practice the days leading up to Week 1 — ‘He’ll be ready to roll,’ McVay said.

Last season, Nacua set rookie records for receptions (105) and receiving yards (1,486) after being a fifth-round draft pick out of BYU.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion officially started his second act as FOX Sports’ lead color commentator alongside play-by-play partner Kevin Burkhardt on Sunday, which ultimately overshadowed the Dallas Cowboys’ 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland. But like a rookie quarterback making his league debut, Brady’s first official game in the booth came under review.

‘You’re a broadcaster! How about that,’ Burkhardt said after introducing his partner, who needed no introduction.

Brady responded with a smile: “We’re here. It’s been quite a journey. I’m excited to be your partner.”

Brady’s performance drew mixed reviews from social media users as his nerves were on display early. He had a couple hiccups with his rhythm and his delivery was choppy at times, in addition to several moments of dead air space that are normally filled with commentary. A slightly awkward fist bump exchange between Brady and FOX Sports rules analyst Mike Pereira — ‘Don’t leave me hanging’ — encapsulated the first half as he settled in.

Brady appeared to find his stride and got more comfortable in the booth as the game progressed. His commentary grew more insightful and engaging, even reminding viewers that he’s ‘still a rookie in here,’ but many NFL fans pointed out there is much room for improvement for Brady.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Brady noted the star difference between playing and broadcasting: ‘I was using my arm and my body for so many years. Now I get to a stadium and I get to use my voice… As Michael Strahan told me in the pregame, you are going to wake up tomorrow on Monday morning and you aren’t going to be sore. That I’m happy about.’

‘Back to work’

FOX Sports first announced in May 2022 that Brady was set to join the network’s lead broadcasting team. The announcement was made ahead of Brady’s final season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he announced his decision to un-retire after 40 days in March 2022. Brady retired from playing ‘for good’ in February 2023 and took a gap year during the 2023-24 NFL season. He’s set to call Super Bowl 59 in New Orleans on Feb. 9, 2025.

Fox aired a new Brady commercial to commemorate his first game as a broadcaster. The commercial opens with a sports pundit questioning Brady’s decision to enter the booth instead of laying ‘on a beach getting fat on pina coladas.”

“What they’re really asking is why don’t you quit football?’ says the New England Patriots’ Brady, one of the many uniformed Bradys featured in the commercial. The Buccaneers’ Brady added: ‘They don’t understand that you live and breathe for football. Because you’re Tom freaking Brady. And our football journey isn’t even close to done.”

The current Brady added: “Back to work.’

Tom Brady’s broadcast debut drew mixed reviews

Gary Lezak, a former Chief Meteorologist in Kansas City, preached ‘patience’ as Brady finds his groove. It is only Week 1 after all.

‘Tom Brady is getting beaten up on X right now on his debut as a broadcaster,’ Lezak wrote. ‘I spent 38-years in broadcasting, and he is a rookie on his first day. I can tell he is very nervous, and it isn’t something that gets better instantly. He will get much better, so give him some slack. And, let’s see him improve in the next few weeks.’

Here’s reactions from social media users:
