Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., described the level to which the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service have prevented the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) from obtaining crucial materials to investigate the failures that led to the assassination attempts against former President Trump.

‘Things like the autopsy report, you know, the House has it under subpoena. We don’t have it,’ he told reporters.

‘[The] toxicology report; we don’t have any of the trajectory reports. So, where’d the bullets go? We don’t even know how they handled the crime scene,’ said Johnson, ranking member of the HSGAC Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI).

The senator pointed to the amount of time that has passed since the July 13 assassination attempt against Trump, noting, ‘There’s just basic information we should have right now, and we don’t have it.’

‘We haven’t been able to interview the sniper who took out [Thomas] Crooks,’ Johnson said. Crooks is the would-be assassin that, during the July 13 rally in Pennsylvania, opened fire, grazing the former president’s ear, killing a rally attendee and critically injuring two others.

According to the Republican, the sniper who shot Crooks was the first person he wanted to interview.

Further, he said they hadn’t been provided any FD-302 forms by the FBI, which are used to investigate through results of interviews. Johnson pointed out that FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate told him during a hearing in July that the bureau would provide the forms as soon as they could.

‘I haven’t gotten one,’ he said.

‘They’ve done 1,000 interviews. We’ve done 12,’ the senator said.

The Wisconsin Republican said the lack of information is consistent with slow-walking.

He also said that a recent briefing to the chairs and ranking members of both HSGAC and PSI from Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe did not provide the senators with any new information.

Johnson described that the few documents which had been provided to the lawmakers were ‘heavily redacted.’

‘And in this case, unusually. I’ve never seen this,’ he remarked of the redactions.

Noting that it wasn’t his ‘first rodeo,’ Johnson recalled that redactions are normally black, blocking out certain parts of text. ‘These are just whiteouts.’

‘So, I don’t know. Was it just a single word?’ he asked.

He said in some cases it wasn’t evident whether something had been obscured in the documents or not due to the white redactions.

‘That’s the level of opacity that we’re getting in terms of their lack of cooperation with our investigation,’ Johnson added.

The Secret Service has reiterated that it is cooperating with Congress’ investigations despite bipartisan outcry and accusations of ‘stonewalling.’

In a comment to Fox News Digital, a spokesperson for the Secret Service said, ‘The U.S. Secret Service is cooperating with a wide range of reviews and investigations related to the attempted assassination on Former President Donald Trump. This includes multiple Congressional investigations, including inquiries by the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations in the Senate, and a special bipartisan task force in the House of Representatives.’

‘Since July 13, we have provided more than 2,800 pages of responsive documentation to these entities and have made our employees available for interviews as requested. On Sept. 12, Acting Director Ron Rowe briefed members of U.S. House and Senate committees regarding the agency’s mission assurance investigation. Given the volume of requests, the jurisdiction of requesters, and the finite capacity of resources and staff to respond, the U.S. Secret Service is prioritizing our responses to those listed above.’

Malik Willis finds himself in a situation few would have expected a mere month ago. The third-year pro is expected to make his second start with the Green Bay Packers against his former team, the Tennessee Titans.

Willis was never given a chance to be a full-time starter with the Titans. He made just three starts with the team, all as a rookie in 2022, before the team spent a second-round pick on Will Levis during the 2023 NFL Draft. Willis remained behind Levis in 2023 after spending the 2022 season behind Ryan Tannehill and, eventually, Josh Dobbs.

That left some wondering whether there would be hard feelings between Willis and the Titans ahead of their Week 3 meeting.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

The Packers quarterback dumped cold water on that speculation during Wednesday’s practice when he was asked if he was relishing a chance to prove the Titans wrong.

‘I couldn’t care less, bro,’ Willis replied, per The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman. ‘I think I got paid the whole time I was there. I’m more than blessed for the opportunity they’ve given me.’

Willis was drafted by the then-Titans brain trust of general manager Jon Robinson and head coach Mike Vrabel. Neither is with the organization any more, but Willis made it clear he is still grateful to the team regardless.

‘They brought me into this league, whether those guys are there or not,’ he said. ‘That organization, they took a shot on me. [Owner] miss Amy [Adams Strunk], they did a great job by me, for all I’m concerned.’

As such, it doesn’t appear there will be any fiery comments or antics from Willis before Sunday’s contest. His focus will remain on replicating the success he enjoyed against the Colts. He completed 12 of 14 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown in that contest while rushing for 41 yards on six carries.

The only thing that could throw a wrench into Willis’ plans would be the return of starting quarterback Jordan Love. The 25-year-old is dealing with an MCL injury he suffered in Week 1 but returned to Packers practice on Wednesday as a limited participant.

Inter Miami star Lionel Messi came off the bench, and was unable to leave his mark in a 2-2 draw against Atlanta United at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday night.

Messi entered in the 61st minute and missed a shot on target, nearly delivering the game-sealing goal in the 83rd minute. Messi’s strike was blocked at the net, and a putback attempt by Luis Suarez was also denied by Atlanta goalie Brad Guzan, denying a third goal for Inter Miami.

The missed opportunities led to a frantic finish, which saw Atlanta United’s Aleksei Miranchuk score a pristine left boot in the 84th minute to force the draw. Saba Lobzhanidze (56′) also scored for Atlanta.

Inter Miami was unable to hang on for the victory behind goals by David Ruiz (29′) and Leo Campana, who became the club’s all-time leading scorer with his 30th goal in the 58th minute, passing Argentine standout Gonzalo Higuain.

Still, Inter Miami remains in firm control of the MLS Supporters’ Shield race with 63 points atop the Eastern Conference despite playing the match with coach Tata Martino, midfielder Sergio Busquets and defender Tomas Aviles out due to yellow card accumulation.

“We came in here to try to win the game. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the three points we expected,” Inter Miami assistant coach Javi Morales said.

Messi, who isn’t far from Inter Miami’s all-time goals scored mark with 27,looked spry and made several charges toward the net, dribbling through traffic trying to find his teammates while they often looked for him in return.

It was unclear how much Messi would play in his second match after returning from his right ankle ligament injury he sustained in the Copa America final on July 14.

Messi played roughly 25 minutes in his first road match with Inter Miami since playing in Montreal on May 11. Messi’s appearance in Atlanta was his second this year: His Copa America title run begin with Argentina against Canada on June 20.

Messi played the distance last Saturday in a 3-1 win against the Philadelphia Union, where he scored two goals and delivered a late assist.

The limited minutes Wednesday was intended to ensure Messi could also be available to play against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.

Messi has 24 total goal contributions – 14 goals and 10 assists – in 14 MLS matches this season for Inter Miami.

“Leo always looks good, today was no exception,” Morales said of Messi.

“He played almost 30 minutes in which he was active, he participated. He had a chance to score. I think that as always Leo’s performance has been very good and positive for the team.”

Aleksei Miranchuk goal: Atlanta United 2, Inter Miami 2

Atlanta United’s Aleksei Miranchuk scored a pristine left boot in the 84th minute to tie this match at 2, setting the stage for a thrilling finish against Messi and Inter Miami.

Messi and the Inter Miami offense have made several attempts to charge the net, but they have been unable to find the net again after this match became tied again.

Leonardo Campana goal: Inter Miami 2, Atlanta United 1

Inter Miami has retaken the lead just minutes after the match was tied with Leonardo Campana’s free kick goal scored in the 58th minute.

It appears Messi is about to enter the match.

Saba Lobzhanidze goal: Atlanta United 1, Inter Miami 1

Atlanta United is on the board in the second half with Saba Lobzhanidze finishing at the net in the 56th minute, and we have a tied game.

The stage might be set for Messi’s entrance.

Messi begins warming up in second half: Inter Miami 1, Atlanta United 0

Just a few minutes after the second half began, Lionel Messi and three other teammates who started the match on the bench headed to the sideline to begin warming up.

It appears Messi will make an appearance in the Atlanta match tonight.

David Ruiz goal: Inter Miami 1, Atlanta United 0

Inter Miami is on the board, and Lionel Messi loves what he sees from the bench.

David Ruiz scores in the 29th minute, and Inter Miami takes an early lead against Atlanta.

How to watch Atlanta United vs. Inter Miami live stream?

The Atlanta United match against Inter Miami begins at 7:30 p.m. ET (8:30 p.m. in Argentina) and will be broadcast via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.

Why is Messi not starting vs. Atlanta United?

It will be Inter Miami’s second of three matches in a week span, which prompted coach Tata Martino to put a potential time limit on the Argentine World Cup champion.

After Inter Miami plays in Atlanta, Messi and the club will face New York City FC on Saturday at Yankee Stadium.

Messi emphatically returned with two goals and an assist in a 3-1 win against Philadelphia last Saturday — his first game since the July 14 Copa America final, which Argentina won after he sustained a right ankle ligament injury.

“Leo is fine, he ended the game well. Tired, obviously,” Martino told reporters Tuesday. “It’s the first 90 minutes in a long time, but it ended very well. He is going to travel to both games. He is available but there are three games this week with travel included, so we have to see it day by day.”

Messi says he was ‘very happy’ after return

Messi scored goals in the 26th and 30th minutes, and assisted Luis Suarez in the 98th minute, playing the distance in his first match since July 14.

“To be honest, I am a little tired, the humidity and heat of Miami doesn’t help,” Messi said in a post-match interview with Apple TV. “But, I was very eager to come back, it had been a long time away from the field. Little by little I started training with the group, I felt good, and that is why we made the decision for me to start. I am very happy, very pleased.”

Messi jerseys lead MLS in sales for second straight season

Messi’s Inter Miami jersey again topped the MLS list for highest-selling jerseys, the league announced Tuesday. His former Barcelona running mates also were ranked high: Luis Suarez (2nd), Sergio Busquets (11th) and Jordi Alba (15th).

MLS Supporters’ Shield race is heating up

Inter Miami has been the front-runner for the Supporters’ Shield, given to the club with the best MLS record, for most of the season. But Messi and Inter Miami will have some stiff competition to win their second title together. Inter Miami leads with 59 points, but the second-place L.A. Galaxy has made up some ground with 55 points.

There were no late-game heroics for the U.S. women this time.

The bronze medal is the best the Americans can do at the Under-20 World Cup after falling 1-0 to North Korea in the semifinals Wednesday afternoon. The USYNT will play the Netherlands in Saturday’s third-place game.

The Americans reached the semifinals with a stunning victory over Germany, winning on penalties after scoring two goals within 90 seconds deep into second-half stoppage time. But that game seemed to take some effort out of the USYNT, who were chasing North Korea for much of the first 75 minutes of the game.

North Korea scored the only goal it needed in the 22nd minute, and had a 17-7 shot advantage on the Americans. U.S. goalkeeper Teagan Wy kept the USYNT in the game, making a couple of nice saves early in the second half. Pietra Tordin had the best chance for the Americans, in the 78th, but North Korea’s keeper made a diving block on it.

Teagan Wy’s saves keeping the US in the game

If the U.S. women come back to win this one, keeper Teagan Wy will deserve much of the credit.

North Korea has dominated the game, keeping Wy busy. With the Americans trailing 1-0, Wy kept the game from getting too far out of reach with a terrific kick save in the 50th minute. North Korea captain Chae Un-young went near post from about 10 yards out, but Wy extended her leg and blocked the shot.

U.S. coach Tracey Kevins made her first personnel moves of the game, subbing on defender Leah Klenke and forward Pietra Tordin in the 57th minute.

US down at halftime, being outplayed by North Korea

The U.S. women have some work to do in their semifinal against North Korea in the Under-20 World Cup.

The Americans trail 1-0 at halftime. That might not seem insurmountable considering the USYNT scored two goals in less than two mintues deep into second-half stoppage time in their quarterfinal against Germany.

North Korea’s top goal-scorer Choe Il Son ended the scoreless deadlock in the 22nd minute, sliding a shot past U.S. goalkeeper Teagan Wy.

North Korea has had the better of the chances in the early going, with two shots on goal — including one from Kim Song Gyong that went off the post — and two corner kicks. Fortunately for the U.S., no shots have gotten past goalkeeper Teagan Wy.

Tuesday, Nov. 5, is Election Day – but if Americans vote like they did in the last two election cycles, most of them will have already cast a ballot before the big day.

Wisconsin kicks off early voting today; the first state to make absentee ballots widely available to voters. By the end of the month, more than half of all states will have ballots in at least some voters’ hands, including Michigan and North Carolina.

It makes the next few months less a countdown to Election Day, and more the beginning of ‘election season.’

States have long allowed at least some Americans to vote early, like members of the military or people with illnesses.

In some states, almost every voter casts a ballot by mail.

Many states expanded eligibility in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic made it riskier to vote in-person.

That year, the Fox News Voter Analysis found that 71% of voters cast their ballots before Election Day, with 30% voting early in-person and 41% voting by mail.

Early voting remained popular in the midterms, with 57% of voters casting a ballot before Election Day.

Elections officials stress that voting early is safe and secure. Recounts, investigations and lawsuits filed after the 2020 election did not reveal evidence of widespread fraud or corruption.

The difference between ‘early in-person’ and ‘mail’ or ‘absentee’ voting.

There are a few ways to vote before Election Day.

The first is , where a voter casts a regular ballot in-person at a voting center before Election Day.

The second is , where the process and eligibility vary by state.

Eight states vote mostly by mail, including California, Colorado, Nevada and Utah. Registered voters receive mail ballots and send them back.

Most states allow any registered voter to receive a mail or absentee ballot and send it back. Depending on the state, voters can return their absentee ballot by mail, at a drop box, and/or at an office or facility that accepts mail ballots.

In 14 states, voters must have an excuse to vote by mail, ranging from illness, age, work hours or if a voter is out of their home county on Election Day.

States process and tabulate ballots at different times. Some states don’t begin counting ballots until election night, which delays the release of results.

Voting begins in multiple battleground states in September

This list of early voting deadlines is for guidance only. In some areas, early voting may begin before the dates listed. For comprehensive and up-to-date information on voter eligibility, processes, and deadlines, go to Vote.gov and your state’s elections website.

Ballots will be made available to eligible absentee voters in Wisconsin starting today. The Midwestern state is one of the most competitive on the Fox News Power Rankings map. Virginia, Minnesota, and twelve more states kick off their early voting for at least some voters by the end of the week.

It’s not exactly how the Milwaukee Brewers would have drawn it up, but they’ll certainly take it regardless.

Thanks to the Oakland A’s downing the Chicago Cubs 5-3 at Wrigley Field on Wednesday afternoon, the Brewers clinched their second consecutive National League Central Division title and fourth in the last seven seasons (also 2018 and 2021).

The team gathered in the home clubhouse at American Family Field and watched together as the Cubs game unfolded.

It marked the second consecutive season Milwaukee learned in unconventional fashion it had become division champ; last year the Brewers had just lost to the St. Louis Cardinals, but a late-inning Cubs collapse against the Braves in Atlanta sealed the deal and allowed the team to celebrate anyway.

“Regardless of getting in via another team’s loss or getting in via our win, it’s still an incredible accomplishment that we’ll celebrate and we earned, regardless of how it happens,” Brewers first baseman-designated hitter Rhys Hoskins following Tuesday night’s loss to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

The champagne bottles and beer cans won’t be popped until later Wednesday night, considering the Brewers (87-64) do have an important game yet to play against the Phillies (91-60).

Both teams are still jockeying for postseason position, with Milwaukee currently the third seed and Philadelphia first. The Brewers’ goal is to earn one of the top two spots – the Los Angeles Dodgers (89-62) are No. 2 – and thus receive a bye into the NL Division Series.

The Phillies also are in position for a celebration, as a win over the Brewers combined with a Braves loss to the Cincinnati Reds would clinch the NL East for them.

Freddy Peralta (11-8, 3.75) starts for Milwaukee on Wednesday night, while Aaron Nola (12-8, 3.62) counters for Philadelphia.

Nola has been tough on the Brewers over the years, compiling a 7-2 record, 2.76 ERA and WHIP of 1.12 in 13 career starts.

Milwaukee has earned its 10th postseason appearance in franchise history and sixth in the last seven years.

National Security communications adviser John Kirby shot down multiple questions Wednesday about possible U.S. involvement in the explosion of hundreds of electronic devices used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon.

‘We were not involved in [Tuesday’s] incidents or [Wednesday’s] in any way. And I don’t have anything more to share,’ Kirby said when asked to respond to the attacks.

Kirby’s comments came hours after several blasts were heard around Lebanon’s capital of Beirut and other parts of the country. Hezbollah’s Al Manar TV reported the explosions were the result of walkie-talkies detonating.

At least nine people were killed and another 300 were wounded in Wednesday’s attack, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

The explosions came just a day after pagers used by hundreds of Hezbollah members exploded throughout Lebanon and parts of Syria, killing at least 12 people – including two children – and wounding thousands more.

Both attacks are widely believed to have been the work of Israel, which has been fighting with Hezbollah almost daily since Oct. 8, the day after a deadly Hamas-led assault in southern Israel triggered the war in Gaza.

Since then, hundreds have been killed in strikes in Lebanon and dozens in Israel, while tens of thousands on each side of the border have been displaced. Hezbollah said its strikes are in support of its ally, Hamas.

Reporters repeatedly pressed Kirby on Wednesday to say whether the U.S. was involved in the back-to-back attacks targeting members of Hezbollah or had been informed beforehand.

Kirby reiterated that he did not ‘have anything more to share today.’

‘We want to see the war end. And everything we’ve been doing since the beginning has been designed to prevent the conflict from escalating,’ Kirby said. ‘We still believe that there is a diplomatic path forward, particularly up near Lebanon.’

The attacks have heightened fears that what has been intermittent fighting between Israel and Hezbollah could escalate into an all-out war.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told Israeli troops Wednesday: ‘We are at the start of a new phase in the war — it requires courage, determination and perseverance.’

Gallant made no mention of the exploding devices but praised the work of Israel’s army and security agencies, saying ‘the results are very impressive.’

Hezbollah announced three strikes on parts of northern Israel Wednesday, at least one of which took place after the latest round of explosions in Lebanon.

The Green Bay Packers earned their first win of the 2024 NFL season in Week 2 despite being without quarterback Jordan Love.

Malik Willis started against the Indianapolis Colts in place of Love, who was dealing with an MCL sprain he suffered in Green Bay’s season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The injury occurred late in the game when Love was tackled by two Eagles players and had his knee bend awkwardly as he threw the ball away. He limped off the field after the injury and did not return.

Love’s injury was expected to be a multi-week problem, but the Packers opted not to put him on IR to offer them flexibility. That decision may pay off, as it appears that Love may have a chance to play in Week 3

Here’s what to know about Love’s injury and status for Green Bay’s clash with the Tennessee Titans.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Jordan Love injury update

Love returned to Packers practice on Wednesday less than two weeks after he suffered the knee injury against the Eagles. Green Bay slapped him with a ‘limited’ designation, but his return to the field marked a significant step forward in his recovery.

Love didn’t practice at all for the Packers ahead of their Week 2 matchup against the Colts. He earned a ‘DNP’ designation each day before being ruled ‘doubtful’ for the contest on Friday, per Green Bay’s injury report.

Jordan Love practice video

Love was spotted at practice wearing a red non-contact jersey and a protective sleeve on his injured left leg. He participated in stretching and drills during the portion of practice open to media.

Jordan Love status for Week 3 vs. Titans

While Love hitting the practice field is a good sign for his progress, his Week 3 availability remains murky. His status will be further clarified by the Packers’ Thursday and Friday practice reports.

On Wednesday, Love admitted he is hoping to play but is going to evaluate his options as the week progresses.

‘I’m going to take the week and just take it day by day and see how it feels,’ he said, per Ryan Wood. ‘I’m not going to make any decisions right now. I’m hopeful that I can get to that point where I can get in there, but we’re just going to take it day by day.’

More light will be shed on Love’s status as he and the Packers assess how his injured knee responds to his workouts.

How long is Jordan Love out?

There is no definitive timetable for Love’s return to action. However, the Packers opted not to place him on IR, so that indicates Green Bay’s medical staff believes there is a chance that Love can return to action without missing four games, which would have put him on track to return in Week 6 against the Arizona Cardinals.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport originally reported that Love was targeting a Week 5 return. It’s possible that timeline has accelerated given Love’s return to practice.

It’s also possible that the Packers will exercise caution and avoid rushing Love back into action. He is the team’s $220 million franchise quarterback, after all.

The Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday cut ties with nine-time All-Star closer Craig Kimbrel, designating him for assignment and recalling reliever Bryan Baker from the minors.

The move could signal the end of what has been an incredibly successful 15-year career for Kimbrel that saw him pitch for eight different teams.

Signed by the Orioles to a one-year, $13 million contract this offseason, the right-hander had an outstanding first half, entering the All-Star break with 23 saves and a 2.80 ERA in 35 ⅓ innings.

But since then, Kimbrel, 36, has completely imploded. In 17 innings in the second half, he’s given up 22 hits and 15 walks, while pitching to a 10.59 ERA.

Kimbrel’s situation in Baltimore is eerily similar to what happened last season when he was a member of the Philadelphia Phillies – when he signed with a playoff-caliber team the previous winter and thrived as closer for the first half of the season, only to see everything come crumbling down late in the season.

Kimbrel was a National League All-Star with the Phillies in 2023, but blew several saves down the stretch, including Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, when he gave up a game-tying two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to Arizona’s Alex Thomas and ended up taking the loss.

In 2022, Kimbrel served as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ closer for most of the season, but struggled down the stretch to the point where he wasn’t included on the club’s postseason roster.

If this is indeed the end of the line, Kimbrel can reflect on a career that could potentially land him in the Hall of Fame. He led the National League in saves for four consecutive seasons from 2011-2014 as a member of the Atlanta Braves, and his career total of 440 saves places him fifth on the all-time list.

Kimbrel has an overall record of 56-47 and a 2.59 ERA over 809 ⅔ innings with the Braves, Padres, Red Sox, Cubs, White Sox, Dodgers, Phillies and Orioles.

Not all 2-0 starts in the NFL are alike.

To be sure, being unbeaten through the first two weeks of the season is cause for any organization to celebrate. Since 1990, teams that have started 2-0 have reached the playoffs 63.9% of the time.

Yet with the scheduling setup and other factors weighing so heavily on such a small sample size, some teams that burst out of the gates are bound to slow down or trip up. While six of the nine teams that reached the 2-0 mark last season made the playoffs, several proved unfit for the long haul.

With that in mind, here’s USA TODAY Sports’ ranking of this year’s nine 2-0 teams based on their contender credentials, with the franchises sorted into three tiers.

Legit contenders

1. Kansas City Chiefs

If not for ending up on the favorable side of a couple fourth-quarter plays, the Chiefs easily could be 0-2 and sparking panic about their Super Bowl three-peat bid. Call it good luck or championship mettle – or some combination of both – but Kansas City once again finds itself 2-0 for the fifth time in seven seasons with Patrick Mahomes as the starting quarterback. Between Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown’s long-term shoulder injury and rookie left tackle Kingsley Suamataia’s benching on Sunday, visions of a far more explosive offense might have been premature. But this remains the team that everyone is chasing, and there’s reason to believe that significant improvement is within reach, especially with Travis Kelce barely factoring into the passing attack thus far. With Mahomes still capable of finding a spark at a moment’s notice and Steve Spagnuolo’s defense continuing to deliver in key spots, Kansas City’s margin for error feels as big as ever.

2. Buffalo Bills

An offseason of roster upheaval has only given way to more personnel hits for Buffalo, which has lost linebackers Matt Milano and Terrel Bernard as well as cornerback Taron Johnson to injuries. But the Bills haven’t buckled yet. With Joe Brady establishing himself as one of the NFL’s most adaptable offensive minds, Josh Allen and Co. have shown any number of ways to exploit defenses despite still sorting out a reconfigured receiving corps. Sean McDermott will eventually have to demonstrate he can overcome the hits that could prove to be the difference against the AFC’s elite. For now, however, the Bills are one of the few teams capable of meeting the Chiefs – or any other top contender – at their best.

3. Houston Texans

Tied with the Chiefs for the lowest point differential (+8) of all the undefeated teams, the Texans didn’t exactly mow down their first two opponents. The defense also was able to tee off against Anthony Richardson and Caleb Williams, who have a combined six starts between them. But Houston has the all the necessary talent to be a title threat, and reigning NFL Coach of the Year DeMeco Ryans continues to position his group to succeed. Sustained improvement in the running game could put the team over the top, as Joe Mixon looked rejuvenated in his 159-yard performance in Week 1 but then suffered an ankle injury against the Chicago Bears. With the AFC South looking nowhere near as competitive as it appeared it might be, the Texans could run away with another division title and make a push for very favorable seeding.

Almost there

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Maybe it’s time to stop expecting a falling off for the three-time defending NFC South champions, who are enjoying their fourth consecutive 2-0 start. The first two came as a recognized powerhouse with Tom Brady behind center. But Baker Mayfield and Todd Bowles have fended off any notion of a regression, and their 20-16 victory Sunday over the Detroit Lions served as a reminder that Tampa Bay belongs among the conference’s best. The resurgence of Chris Godwin is a major boon for the offense, while Bowles’ group continues to hold firm when in key spots. A stagnant run game and shortage of firepower in the pass rush remain potential long-term limitations, but the Buccaneers’ abilities are readily evident.

5. New Orleans Saints

While the Saints have been pilloried for continuing to double down on a roster that has produced middling results in recent years, the franchise might be responsible for the most consequential move of the offseason. The hiring of offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak activated something in a veteran-laden attack that few could have seen coming, as New Orleans’ 91 points are tied for the fourth most in league history through a team’s first two games. It must be noted, however, that the scoring outbursts came against the hapless Carolina Panthers and a Dallas Cowboys defense playing in its second game within a new scheme. Still, the rampant use of motion and play-action has done wonders for both Derek Carr, who looks far more confident after a rocky debut season in the Big Easy, and Alvin Kamara, the five-time Pro Bowler who leads the NFL in yards from scrimmage (290) after averaging just 3.9 yards per rush last season. If the Saints can handle a brutal upcoming four-game stretch (vs. Eagles, at Falcons, at Chiefs, vs. Buccaneers), then kick them up a tier. For now, though, put a pin in any projection of a home Super Bowl.

More to prove

6. Minnesota Vikings

It’s understandable that the focus of the Vikings’ sizzling start has been Sam Darnold, as it’s not often that a former top-five pick serves a reminder of his promise upon joining his fourth team (Mayfield, of course, was the pioneer here). But there’s little question that more recognition should be given to defensive coordinator Brian Flores. As San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy put it to Flores after Minnesota bagged him for six sacks and two turnovers in a 23-17 win on Sunday, ‘Your scheme is crazy.’ While Flores should continue to fluster opposing attacks throughout the season, Darnold still must demonstrate that he can be a consistent triggerman and do more than let Justin Jefferson be Justin Jefferson. But if Kevin O’Connell can continue to put him in favorable spots – and the mounting injuries to his pass catchers don’t take too much of a toll – Minnesota could be in the wild-card mix late into the season.

7. Los Angeles Chargers

With more yards rushing (395) than passing (270), Jim Harbaugh’s crew has already established its NFL counterculture identity. Yet the approach used to grind down the Raiders and Panthers almost certainly won’t be deployed as easily against the likes of the Steelers and Chiefs, who await the next two weeks. The Bolts’ dominant defensive performances are inextricably tied to the moribund passing attacks they faced, and an underdeveloped receiving corps threatens to be a stumbling block when early-game conditions are less favorable. Still, even if the group can’t quite keep up with contenders, the schedule is soft enough that the Chargers could be a rough-and-tumble version of last year’s Dolphins, overpowering the league’s subpar-to-average teams to stay relevant in the postseason picture.

8. Pittsburgh Steelers

It’s fitting that the Steelers are squaring off with the Chargers on Sunday, as the two have plenty of overlapping traits. Like Los Angeles’ group, Pittsburgh’s defense has smothered its overwhelmed opponents, but the unit is in need of a greater test. And the Steelers haven’t had to make much of an ask of their passing game with Justin Fields filling in for Russell Wilson. Still, while Mike Tomlin has proven himself adept at navigating roster deficiencies that would sink lesser coaches, this formula doesn’t appear tenable for the long run, as neither Fields nor Wilson look capable of bailing the offense out the way Herbert can. A league-best +5 turnover differential has been key to Pittsburgh’s early success. Maybe the defense can continue to generate big plays, but the offense could be facing some bigger holes ahead if the team sticks with Fields, who had 41 turnovers in 40 games with the Chicago Bears while taking 135 sacks in the same span.

9. Seattle Seahawks

Credit Mike Macdonald, the NFL’s youngest coach at 37, for getting off on the right foot with an unblemished start – something no other coach in franchise history has managed in his first year. But there was no easier opening slate than the one Seattle had in facing the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots, with each franchise sorting through major roster resets. Macdonald’s complex scheme will likely continue to vex opponents throughout the season, and Geno Smith looks fully in command of new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb’s attack. But an offensive line that ranks 31st in both ESPN’s pass block win rate (38%) and run block win rate (65%) remains a major liability, particularly on the interior. While the Seahawks might be far more competitive than many predicted, a regression seems inevitable once the level of competition ratchets up.
