A trade involving wide receiver Davante Adams is expected in the coming weeks, if not days. The New York Jets are considered one of the favorites to land the three-time First-Team All-Pro wideout after it was reported he ‘preferred to be traded’ from the Las Vegas Raiders.

Some NFL fans would say the Jets are all-in this season, but they have one more chip to fall before that can come to fruition. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers has been recruiting his former Green Bay Packers teammate. Adams has reportedly expressed his interest in a reunion with Rodgers.

The Jets have supplied Rodgers with plenty of firepower and would push all of their chips in if they acquired Adams via trade. New York is on a timeline with the 40-year-old signal-caller. Rodgers is the oldest player in the NFL, and if they didn’t acquire Adams, the roster built by Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh could be considered half-measured.

Adams spoke on his feelings toward joining forces with Rodgers again this past offseason on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay podcast. “If I’m gonna be reunited with anybody, it would be Aaron,’ he said.

With the Jets considered a realistic landing spot for Adams, here’s a look at how he fits with New York and the fantasy football implications that would come with it.

Davante Adams fit with the Jets

The chemistry on the field between Rodgers and Adams is undeniable. They played eight seasons together in Green Bay. In his last three healthy seasons with Rodgers in Green Bay, Adams finished with at least 100 receptions, 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Leading up to Week 5, Rodgers and his current No. 1 wide receiver, Garrett Wilson, had struggled to get in sync. Wilson has caught 58.9% of his targets this season. Meanwhile, Adams averaged catching 75% of his targets over his final two seasons with Rodgers in Green Bay.

Wilson is in his third NFL season after the Jets selected him with the 10th overall pick in 2022. Wilson had his best performance with Rodgers against the Vikings in Week 5, catching 13 of a whopping 22 targets for 101 yards and a touchdown. Still, Rodgers has been outspoken about how teams have defended Wilson early on.

Following the Jets’ first three games, Rodgers said, ‘The entire focus of all three defenses we’ve played has been taking Garrett away.’ Teams have shaded safety coverage to the side of the field Wilson is lined up on, forcing Rodgers to work to his secondary receivers like Allen Lazard.

Lazard was brought to New York similarly because Rodgers wanted to play with receivers he was familiar with from his time in Green Bay. He played three full seasons alongside Adams in Green Bay. Lazard currently leads the Jets with four touchdowns and has at least eight targets in three of five games.

Lazard would fall to third on the depth chart if Adams were brought to New York.

One aspect of Adams’ potential addition that can’t be overlooked is the stress he can put on a defense. With Adams and Wilson on the field, opposing coordinators would no longer be able to dial up consistent double coverage on the Jets receivers.

Adams is familiar with Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who was the OC during Adams’ final three seasons in Green Bay. Adams would immediately be familiar with the Jets’ current playbook, making a midseason addition to the offense seamless for the vet.

Best WR duos in NFL

Some of the top teams in the NFL have dynamic duos at wide receiver. The Jets would be among the best if they acquired Adams to pair with Wilson.

They would join the ranks of some of the best wide receiver duos in the league, like Philadelphia’s AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, Miami’s Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, Cincinnati’s Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins and San Francisco’s Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.

Jets can trade Mike Williams

The Raiders have notified teams they will not accept anything less than a second-round pick for Adams. In the offseason, the Jets signed veteran wide receiver Mike Williams to add another weapon to the offense. Williams is returning from a torn ACL he suffered in 2023 and hasn’t exceeded playing 71% of snaps this season.

The Jets’ Week 5 loss to the Vikings in London displayed a lack of chemistry between Williams and Rodgers. New York was driving deep into Minnesota territory, and time was winding down when Rodgers launched a throw down the sideline to Williams, who wasn’t on the same page. Stephon Gilmore intercepted the pass inside the 10-yard line.

Williams was drafted in 2017 by current Raiders general manager Tom Telesco while he was the Los Angeles Chargers GM. The Jets could offer Williams in a trade with the Raiders or ship him off to another team that needs a receiver.

One thing is for certain: The Jets are motivated to win now, and the offense could take flight with the addition of Adams.

Davante Adams contract details

Adams’ salary for this season is $17.5 million, with $13.5 million still owed through the end of the season. And while he is under contract for 2025 and 2026, his annual salary is $36.25 million each season.

The Jets have more than $17.1 million in salary cap space. After a potential trade, New York would likely have to get Adams to agree to a restructured contract.

PALM DESERT, Calif. – Usually it’s the Los Angeles Lakers and their opponent providing the entertainment on game night. But on Sunday, LeBron James and several of teammates looked thoroughly amused by what they witnessed in the crowd at Acrisure Arena during their preseason game against the Phoenix Suns.

It began with 1:26 left in the third quarter.

The man tried to shoot the ball over the basket, but the ball hit the stanchion before bounced back into his possession. The referee motioned him to throw it back.

Soon LeBron and Anthony Davis were off the bench, and other Lakers followed suit, standing and smiling as arena staffers encircled the man and escorted him out of the arena.

Week 5 in the NFL, thanks in part to a lengthy weather delay ahead of the Dallas Cowboys-Pittsburgh Steelers game, saw action spanning more than 15 hours on Sunday.

And there was no result more surprising than the defending NFC-champion San Francisco 49ers dropping their third game of the season, this one to the Arizona Cardinals. For San Francisco, it’s the start of a concerning trend; the team has now lost a pair of games in the last three weeks against NFC West teams after holding a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Elsewhere, the Buffalo Bills had a dumbfounding sequence late in the game, and the Cincinnati Bengals are already reaching an inflection point in their season.

Here are the winners and losers from Sunday of Week 5 in the NFL.

WINNERS

Problems remain, but Cowboys withstand Steelers

The NFC East may be one of those divisions where at least three teams have a legitimate shot to win the title, so every game will be crucial. The Cowboys gutted out a massive 20-17 victory against the Steelers, one that keeps them one game back of the surprising Washington Commanders.

Dallas did a nice job of overcoming many of its faults. It held Pittsburgh’s rushing offense, which entered Sunday ranked 10th in the NFL, to just 92 yards, more than 30 below its average. The Cowboys (3-2) also got solid production down the stretch from running back Rico Dowdle (20 carries for 87 yards) and controlled the clock late in the game, culminating in a 15-play, 70-yard touchdown drive. Dallas still has a lot to clean up and needs to get healthy on defense, but this could spark some positive momentum in what has been a rather middling season thus far.

This is a glimpse of what the Bears can be (if they pass protect)

No. 1 overall rookie Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears posted their best offensive game of the season in a 36-10 rout. No surprise, it came against the moribund pass rush of the Carolina Panthers. Chicago’s offensive line has been a weakness all season, but on Sunday it showed what this offense could be with consistent pass protection.

Still, Williams (20-of-29 for 304 yards and two touchdowns) needs to be better getting rid of the ball, finding checkdowns or deciding to scramble. On a second down midway through the third quarter, in the red zone, Williams bounced around in the pocket and nearly took a sack (twice) before he frantically threw the ball out of bounds. He took so long that a Chicago (3-2) lineman was ineligible downfield. This came with the game already decided, but in a closer contest, a mistake like that could prove to be unnecessarily costly.

Broncos stack wins, building a young, competitive team

It doesn’t always look pretty, and maybe the offensive stats won’t impress, but after a 34-18 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, the young Denver Broncos have now won three in a row and boast a fierce defense that is quickly becoming one of the NFL’s best.

The Broncos forced four turnovers from the Raiders, including cornerback Patrick Surtain II’s 100-yard pick-six. Denver fell into an early 10-point deficit but ripped off 34 unanswered points to put Vegas away. The Broncos generated consistent pressure off of their blitz, flustering Raiders quarterbacks Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell. A defense like this is the best gift a rookie quarterback can ask for, and Bo Nix is making plays and taking care of the ball; during Denver’s three-game winning streak, Nix has scored five total touchdowns and hasn’t committed a turnover.

Saquon who? Giants find dynamic playmaker at RB

OK, so maybe fifth-round rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. won’t make New York Giants fans entirely forget about Saquon Barkley, who left in free agency to join the Philadelphia Eagles. But at the very least, Tracy showed he should get immediate playing time and perhaps take over as starter even when Devin Singletary (groin) is healthy enough to return.

In a 29-10 win over the Seattle Seahawks, Tracy ran 18 times for 129 yards — averaging 7.2 yards per rush — and was the anchor of New York’s offense. He flashed excellent vision and patience and also slipped through the grasp of Seattle tacklers. Tracy’s production also helped open up the passing game, which was without star rookie Malik Nabers (concussion). The Giants (2-3) will need more consistent offensive production to be a contender, and Tracy’s big-play ability could be key to unlocking that.

LOSERS

The 49ers forget how to finish

In two of the last three games, the 49ers held 10-point leads in fourth quarters against division opponents. San Francisco lost both. In fact, the 49ers (2-3) were shut out entirely in the second half of Sunday’s 24-23 defeat against the Arizona Cardinals.

Most of San Francisco’s offensive issues stem from inattention to detail and carelessness with the football; the four possessions in the second half resulted in an interception, a turnover on downs (because place kicker Jake Moody was ruled out with an ankle injury), a lost fumble and a game-sealing interception. Exacerbating that is the context. The Niners held a two-point lead late in the fourth. A touchdown would’ve almost certainly iced the game. Yet the 49ers were inside the 10 and running back Jordan Mason had the ball punched out. The Cardinals recovered. Arizona answered with a 14-play, 75-yard drive that set up the eventual game-winning field goal.

Buffalo’s mind-numbingly unaware, inexcusable game management

The Buffalo Bills looked like they’d have a lot to be proud of; they battled back to tie the game against a good Houston Texans team after being down 17. Then, Buffalo (3-2) got arrogant and greedy and lost the game on an astonishingly foolish decision bordering on malpractice.

With the Bills pinned at their own 3-yard line with 32 seconds left to play in the tied game, offensive coordinator Joe Brady opted to drop back three straight plays. The results: an offensive pass interference (declined), an incomplete heave down the middle and another deep misfire that was another low-percentage prayer. Buffalo punted deep from its own end zone, the Texans got a decent return and Ka’imi Fairbairn drilled a 59-yard field goal as time expired to seal a 23-20 win. It’s rare for a coaching decision to so clearly sink a team’s chances. Brady and coach Sean McDermott pulled it off.

Cincy’s season may already be slipping away

The Bengals saw quarterback Joe Burrow throw five touchdowns, while they held a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter and Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson inexplicably fumbled the ball at midfield in overtime. And yet Cincinnati still lost 41-38.

After recovering that fumble, the Bengals played far too conservatively, running the ball up the middle three straight times. That set up a 53-yard field goal attempt, on which the snap was inaccurate and the hold was even worse. The Bengals (1-4) simply don’t have a reliable rushing attack, and Zack Moss banged up his right ankle. Their rushing defense isn’t much better. Cincinnati’s season may already be on the brink, as the Bengals, with tiebreakers, are currently in last place in the AFC.

Nick Chubb won’t save Cleveland or an offense broken beyond repair

Most issues start with Deshaun Watson and the worst contract in NFL history. The Browns are stuck with Watson, who is as close to untradeable as a player can be. His fully guaranteed contract has two-and-a-half seasons before it voids. The dead cap number is so oppressive that, before cutting him, the team is better off letting him waste away on the bench — an unprecedented sunk cost fallacy in the NFL.

After the 34-13 loss to the Commanders, coach Kevin Stefanski said “we’re not changing quarterbacks,” but Watson doesn’t have command of the offense. His inability to push the ball down the field is compounded only by his inability to sense pressure. Cleveland (1-4) went 1-of-13 (8%) on third-down conversions. In fact, the Browns started the game 0-for-12 on third downs, meaning that — going back to last week’s loss against the Raiders — they had a stretch of 19 consecutive third downs without a conversion.

The height of hurricane season has resulted in one NFL team adjusting game-week logistics. 

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will travel to New Orleans on Tuesday for their game against the New Orleans Saints five days later. Hurricane Milton strengthened to a major Category 5 storm Monday as it rolled across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida’s west coast. 

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency for several counties Sunday. Tampa International Airport will suspend flight operations at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

With operations based in New Orleans for the week, the team was able to secure the necessary amount of hotel rooms for the stay, according to ESPN. 

Tampa Bay was originally scheduled to travel to New Orleans on Saturday. Coming off a Thursday night loss to the Atlanta Falcons, the Buccaneers (3-2) have an extended layoff leading into the matchup against the Saints, who play the Kansas City Chiefs on “Monday Night Football.”

Hurricane Helene devastated parts of western Florida and the southeastern United States in late September. Milton’s winds have eclipsed 150 mph, and the area is bracing for more damage. 

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, the team will begin practicing on Wednesday at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium for their upcoming game in Week 6.

By now, it has been well documented that Week 6 of the 2024 college football season was one of the wildest weekends of the year.

And as a result of the historic upsets, the projected College Football Playoff bracket was shaken up a bit — as were the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Top 25 rankings.

With Vanderbilt knocking off then-No. 2 Alabama in the biggest upset of the weekend (and season), the Crimson Tide saw a significant drop in the projected playoff bracket. The loss came one week after Kalen DeBoer’s squad picked up a statement win against Georgia, a win that made Alabama a contender for the No. 1 spot, right behind Texas.

However, due to Alabama’s loss to Vanderbilt, Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns are the clear No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff, even after they were on a bye.

One team that played in Week 6 that avoided any hit to its playoff odds and seeding was No. 2 Ohio State, as Ryan Day’s squad dominated the second half against Iowa to stay undefeated on the season at 5-0. The Buckeyes have a big challenge this week when they travel out to No. 3 Oregon.

With UNLV falling to Syracuse at home this week, Boise State of the Mountain West Conference took over the automatic bid for the Group of Five as the fifth highest-rated conference champion. While Notre Dame is ranked higher than Boise State in this week’s Coaches Poll and is also considered a ‘Group of Five’ program, the Irish cannot be considered as the last automatic bid as they are independent.

For the first time in the history of the College Football Playoff, first-round games of the playoff will take place on the campus of the higher-seeded at-large teams. Using this week’s US LBM Coaches Poll, here’s how the first-round games would play out if the season ended today:

Injuries are always a factor in how NFL teams distribute playing time. But even if one player is fortunate to get more opportunities, production is an even more important factor in making those temporary gains permanent.

Fantasy managers have a couple of situations in the AFC North division to monitor this week. One is in Cincinnati, where the backfield dynamic may be changing. Another is in Cleveland, where a shared workload could be trumped by a former starter’s return.

Let’s take a look at some players whose values are trending upward (or downward) as a result of their performances in Week 5.

Fantasy football players to buy in Week 6

RB Chase Brown, Cincinnati Bengals: Brown has worked his way into at least a timeshare, scoring a total of three touchdowns in the past two games. Fellow RB Zack Moss turned an ankle late in the OT loss to Baltimore, so Brown could head into Week 6 with the backfield carries all to his lonesome.

RB Tank Bigsby, Jacksonville Jaguars: Perhaps no one’s fantasy star is rising quicker than Bigsby’s. The former Auburn tailback appears to have blown by Travis Etienne in the Jacksonville offense, racking up a season-high 13 carries for 101 yards and two scores in Week 5. On his bruising, highlight-reel TD against the Indianapolis Colts, it looked like he ran through every member of the defense.

RB Tyrone Tracy Jr., New York Giants: The rookie got the starting nod with Devin Singletary nursing an injury, and he shined. Tracy blew up for 18 carries and 129 yards (7.2 per carry). He has likely played himself into a timeshare role with the G-Men, even if Singletary is able to return in Week 6.

WR Darnell Mooney, Atlanta Falcons: The Atlanta offense seems to be clicking with the offseason additions of Mooney and QB Kirk Cousins, even if the chemistry took a little while. Mooney had nine catches, 105 yards, two scores and 16 targets in Week 5 against Tampa Bay.

QB Joe Flacco, Indianapolis Colts: Second-year QB Anthony Richardson missed Week 5, opening the door for the 39-year-old Flacco to make his first start of 2024. He proved he still has plenty left in the tank, throwing for 359 yards and three scores. Richardson has been so erratic and inaccurate, the Colts likely won’t rush him back.

Fantasy football players to sell in Week 6

RB Jerome Ford, Cleveland Browns: Ford and D’Onta Foreman split carries Sunday in Washington, and neither really did much. It’s all academic, as Nick Chubb returned to practice last week, and he is nearing a return to game action. Ford’s fantasy appeal will shrivel once Chubb returns.

WR George Pickens, Pittsburgh Steelers: Pickens had 113 yards in Week 4, but he has managed 29 or fewer in two of the past four games, including the Sunday night showdown with Dallas. He has been the victim of erratic play from QB Justin Fields and questionable usage patterns by the coaching staff. Pickens might benefit the most once Russell Wilson’s calf finally heals.

WR Dontayvion Wicks, Green Bay Packers: Wicks was expected to see a larger role behind Jayden Reed with wideout Romeo Doubs suspended for Week 5. The fuse was never lit for Wicks, as Reed and TE Tucker Kraft were the receiving stars, while Wicks still maintained a minimal role.

QB Gardner Minshew, Las Vegas Raiders: Minshew has been hanging onto the starting job by a thread since Week 3. He had a 100-yard pick-six as the Raiders were driving to go up two scores. That changed the game substantially. Head coach Antonio Pierce benched Minshew, though backup Aidan O’Connell was just as bad.

Ole Miss cruised to a 27-3 victory over South Carolina on Saturday, but that was far from the biggest storyline to emerge from the Rebels’ Week 6 victory.

Late in the game between the Rebels and Gamecocks, South Carolina freshman edge defender Dylan Stewart – one of the most highly sought-after players in the 2024 recruiting class – sacked Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart. What would have been a good play in an otherwise forgettable game for South Carolina instead turned into a point of national interest after Stewart imitated firing a shotgun at Dart as he laid on the turf at Williams-Brice Stadium.

Here’s a look at the celebration, which occurred after Stewart’s third-down sack, with Ole Miss leading 24-3 at the time. Thanks to the penalty, Ole Miss was able to extend its drive and get a field goal in what would be the final score of the 27-3 win:

South Carolina coach Shane Beamer offered a terse ‘yes’ when asked whether he had spoken to Stewart after the game regarding the penalty. But the Gamecocks coach wasn’t the one to have the final word in the matter.

That instead went to Dart himself, who called out Stewart after the game was over. He quote tweeted a video of the incident, captioning it, ‘How tf do you miss a whole 100 shots.’ The lyrics are from a song from rapper Young Dolph, titled ‘100 Shots.’ It was released in 2017 as a diss track to Yo Gotti after his vehicle was reportedly shot over 100 times in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Stewart finished the game with four tackles, three for a loss, and a sack. Dart finished the game completing 14 of 27 passes for 285 yards while taking a sack. He also rushed eight times for a net gain of 44 yards.
