The Justice Department is deploying district elections officers across the nation ahead of Election Day to ensure poll workers can ‘do their jobs free from threats and intimidation.’

The elections officers are expected to work in coordination with the Justice Department’s Election Threats Task Force, which was created in June 2021 by Attorney General Merrick Garland and Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco to address alleged violence against election workers.

The task force, since its inception, has been engaging with the election community and state and local law enforcement to assess allegations and reports of threats against election workers, according to the Justice Department. The task force also partners with FBI field offices and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices throughout the U.S.

This week, U.S. attorneys offices announced their district elections officers, which are selected each election cycle, to coordinate with the Elections Threats Task Force and federal, state and local law enforcement on Election Day. The coordination will ensure reports on the ground regarding any election-related complaints are coordinated with appropriate authorities, officials said.

The district elections officers are also responsible for overseeing their district’s handling of Election Day complaints about voting rights concerns, threats of violence to election officials or staff, and election fraud, officials said.

‘The Department will address these violations wherever they occur,’ the Justice Department said in a statement.

The DOJ added that its ‘longstanding Election Day Program furthers these goals and also seeks to ensure public confidence in the electoral process by providing local points of contact within the Department for the public to report possible federal election law violations.’

Just last month, Garland convened a public meeting of the task force, saying there has been an ‘unprecedented spike in threats against the public servants who do administer our elections’ since 2020.

Since the task force was created, the DOJ has charged nearly two dozen individuals related to alleged threats to election workers.

‘These cases are a warning: if you threaten to harm or kill an election worker or official or volunteer, the Justice Department will find you,’ Garland said last month. ‘And we will hold you accountable.’

Just this year, the DOJ charged an individual for an alleged shooting spree targeting the homes of elected officials and a candidate for office; an individual for sending threatening communications to a Michigan election official; and more.

Garland said the Justice Department will continue to build on its work ahead of the Nov. 5 Election Day by holding on-the-ground meetings with election workers across the nation.

Garland also announced that ahead of Election Day, in early November, the FBI will host federal partners at FBI headquarters to address events, issues and potential crimes related to the elections.

‘Election officials and administrators do not need to navigate this threat environment alone,’ Garland said. ‘We are here to support them and make sure they can safely carry out their critical work.’

NEW YORK — Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve didn’t hold back in her postgame news conference after Game 5 of the WNBA Finals on Sunday, a 67-62 overtime win for New York that brought the Liberty its first title in franchise history.

“I know the headlines will be, ‘Reeve cries foul,’ ‘ Reeve said. “Bring it on. Bring it on — because this (expletive) was stolen from us.”

Reeve was furious about the free-throw discrepancy of Game 5. New York was whistled for 17 fouls and the Lynx were called for 21, but the Liberty shot 25 free throws while Minnesota had just eight attempts.

At the end of regulation, with Minnesota leading 60-58 with 6.3 seconds to play. New York inbounded the ball to Breanna Stewart, who threw up an awkward shot that looked off — but then a whistle blew, and Alanna Smith was called for a foul. Reeve and her staff were incensed and challenged the call. But the challenge failed, and Stewart stepped to the line. She drained both, which ultimately forced overtime.

“It’s a shame that officiating had such a hand in a series like this,” Reeve said. “I thought today was incredibly disappointing. The challenge – we have got to change our challenge rules. The officials during the game should have a third party, because that was not a foul.

‘That call should have been reversed on that challenge … if we would have turned that clip in (to the league), they would have told us that this was marginal contact, no foul. Guaranteed. Guaranteed.”

Officiating had been a hot topic most of the series, with both Reeve and New York coach Sandy Brondello complaining about a lack of calls. After Reeve complained following Game 3, Minnesota shot 20 free throws in Game 4 while New York shot nine.

Then it was Brondello’s turn to complain after Game 4.

“I know Cheryl talked about it last time, but we got no calls today, so do I need to talk up in a press conference?” Brondello said. “Because they were getting ticky-tacks. And we went down there and got hit and get nothing … All we want is fair, OK? So if we are getting hit, that’s a foul. I’m one of the nicest bloody coaches in this league, but this pisses me off.”

Reeve said Sunday, “Officiating, it’s not that hard … Three of the games in this series, we’re talking about the same damn thing.”

Reeve had been particularly annoyed with a lack of calls for Minnesota’s star, forward Napheesa Collier.

In the five-game series, Collier shot just 14 total free throws, and none in Game 5. Stewart, New York’s star forward, shot 31.

Collier finished with 22 points Sunday, shooting 11-of-23 from the field. Asked why she struggled to score in the second half, Collier also pointed to the refs.

“Probably because I was getting held a little bit,” she said. “It was a little hard to make shots.”

Brondello guffawed when told about Reeve’s comments about the title being “stolen” and said, “I thought (the officials) were fair.”

Deshaun Watson is likely done for the remainder of the the 2024 season in a serious blow to the Cleveland Browns.

The Browns quarterback was hurt during Cleveland’s Week 7 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, suffering an Achilles injury. The injury occurred with 1:22 left in the first half. Watson looked like he was trying to scramble up the middle after a seam opened in the offensive line.

As Watson went forward, his right leg buckled underneath him. He immediately went down without being hit and remained down on the ground in evident pain.

Cleveland’s medical staff came out to tend to Watson on the field. After several minutes, they loaded the veteran quarterback onto a cart and took him back to the locker room to be further evaluated.

Watson was emotional as he left the field. He had a towel draped over his head, and it seemed he was crying.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Deshaun Watson injury update

The Browns announced early in the third quarter that Watson had suffered an Achilles injury. The veteran quarterback was ruled out for the game because of the injury, and Stefanski acknowledged after the contest it looks like Watson’s injury will be season-ending.

‘Let’s get the tests first, but that’s what it looks like,’ Stefanski said when asked if the injury would be season-ending.

Watson’s diagnosis wasn’t a surprise. Close-up videos of the injury appeared to show the injury occurred in Watson’s right calf, which former NFL doctor David J. Chao said indicated the quarterback had torn his Achilles.

Who is Deshaun Watson’s backup on Browns depth chart?

Dorian Thompson-Robinson was called upon to replace Watson in Cleveland’s lineup. The second-year quarterback had served as the team’s third-string quarterback behind veteran Jameis Winston, the No. 1 pick in the 2015 NFL draft, for the first six weeks of the season but was promoted for the matchup against the Bengals on the depth chart.

Winston was named Cleveland’s emergency third quarterback in Week 7 despite being inactive for Sunday’s game. He will be able to enter the game if Thompson-Robinson is injured and ruled out for the game but will otherwise remain on the bench.

Deshaun Watson stats

Watson enjoyed a solid outing before exiting the game, completing 15 of 17 passes for 128 yards. He did not lead the Browns to any points while in the game but twice led them into scoring range, including on the drive during which he was injured.

Watson entered Week 6 having completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 1,020 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions. His passer rating of 76.6 ranked 28th in the NFL among 31 qualified passers.

Before the Cleveland Browns contemplate how to move forward in a 1-6 season without their starting quarterback, Myles Garrett made clear he wouldn’t stand for the fan base’s reaction to a defining moment from Sunday.

After quarterback Deshaun Watson suffered what the team believes could be a season-ending Achilles injury in Sunday’s 21-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, many fans booed the struggling signal-caller while he remained down on the field and later carted off.

That didn’t sit well with Garrett, the five-time Pro Bowl defensive end and reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, who called Watson ‘a model citizen through college and most of the pros.’

‘Whether it’s an opponent that goes down or one of our own (players), we don’t boo,’ Garrett said in a postgame news conference. ‘We don’t boo guys that are injured on the field, especially when the cart comes out. We should be ashamed of ourselves, as Browns and as fans, to boo anyone and their downfall.’

Watson, who was also widely booed during pregame introductions, has floundered in his third season with the Browns, who traded a pick package that included more than three first-round selections to acquire him and later signed him to a fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract. Cleveland remains the only team in the NFL yet to score 20 points in a game this year.

All things Browns: Latest Cleveland Browns news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Nevertheless, Browns coach Kevin Stefanski vowed last week to stick with Watson, saying the quarterback ‘gives us the best chance to win.’

‘The man’s not perfect. He doesn’t need to be,’ Garrett said. ‘None of us expect to be perfect. Can’t judge him for what he does on the field or off the field, because I can’t throw stones from my glass house.

‘But we need to do better. We need to do better on the football field, and we need to do better as fans for having some empathy for having some empathy for a man who’s doing the best he can, and did the best he can to this point.’

Jameis Winston, who entered Sunday’s game as the emergency quarterback after backup Dorian Thompson-Robinson suffered a finger injury in the fourth quarter, echoed Garrett’s sentiments.

‘I am grateful that I had a chance to serve Deshaun, but I am very upset with the reaction to a man that’s had the world against him for the past four years,’ Winston told reporters after the game. ‘And he put his body and life on the line for this city, every single day. Regardless of your perception, regardless of what you thought should happen with him, he committed every single day that I’ve been here to be the best that he can be for this team.’

Added Winston: ‘I do not want the treatment that Deshaun Watson has received from these passionate fans. I know you love this game. When I first got here, I knew these were some amazing fans. But Deshaun was treated badly, and now he has to overcome another obstacle.’

Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II was far more explicit in his assessment of fans’ reactions.

‘That was (expletive). I noticed it right away,’ Newsome told reporters after the game. ‘No matter what you feel about a player, performance-wise or not, you don’t boo a guy that’s down, that can’t get up by himself. So, yeah, that was (expletive).’

Watson was suspended for the first 11 games of the 2022 NFL season for violating the league’s conduct policy after he was accused by more than two dozen women of sexual misconduct during massage sessions. He played in just six games in 2023 as well before being sidelined by a shoulder injury.

LOS ANGELES — It will be the city of angels vs. the city that never sleeps in the 2024 World Series.

The New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers will meet in the Fall Classic, pitting the two most populous cities in the United States and some of baseball’s most historic franchises against each other for the Commissioner’s Trophy.

The franchises aren’t new to success; the Yankees have a MLB-high 27 World Series titles while Los Angeles has seven championships, sixth most in baseball.

This will be the first time in more than 40 years the two teams will meet in the World Series, but the two franchises are very familiar with each other when it comes to playing for the title. The Yankees and Dodgers have played in the World Series 11 times, the most matchup in league history.

With edition No. 12 of Yankees vs. Dodgers on deck, here is a look at the history of the Yankees and Dodgers in the World Series:

Yankees vs. Dodgers World Series history

New York and Los Angeles met in 11 of the World Series in a 41-year span from 1941-81 that started when the Dodgers were still in Brooklyn. The Yankees have dominated the series with an 8-3 advantage that includes wins in the first five meetings. However, the Dodgers won last time they met in the World Series.

Here is every World Series the Dodgers and Yankees have played each other and the series result (winner in bold):

1977 World Series: Yankees 4, Dodgers 2
1978 World Series: Yankees 4, Dodgers 2
1981 World Series: Dodgers 4, Yankees 2

Last Yankees-Dodgers World Series

The last World Series meeting between New York and Los Angeles came in 1981 when the Dodgers won their fifth title in franchise history.

New York won the first two games of the series at home to take a 2-0 lead, but Los Angeles came back to win four straight games − the first three at home and last in New York − to win the World Series.

One of the biggest moments of the series came in Game 5; with the series tied at 2-2 at the Yankees holding a 1-0 lead entering the seventh inning, Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager hit back-to-back home runs to give the Dodgers the lead in an eventual victory. In Game 6, Los Angeles offense broke out for a 9-2 win to capture the title.

The 1981 World Series was the first time co-MVPs were awarded, with Guerrero, Yeager and Ron Cey sharing the honor.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk had to be carted to the locker room during the 49ers’ Week 7 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The wideout had made his second catch of the game in the second quarter – a 15-yard reception – when Kansas City cornerback Trent McDuffie started to tackle him. Soon after, fellow defensive back Chamarri Conner came in to help finish the tackle with a hit to the lower body.

During the play, Conner’s contact appeared to bend Aiyuk’s right knee in the wrong direction. The receiver stayed down for a few extra moments and was attended to by medical personnel.

Here’s the latest on the 49ers wideout’s status:

All things 49ers: Latest San Francisco 49ers news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Brandon Aiyuk injury update

Aiyuk took a low hit to his right leg from Conner, a Chiefs safety, after making a catch in the second quarter.

The Fox broadcast of the 49ers vs. Chiefs showed Aiyuk limping on the sideline as he made his way to the blue medical tent following the hit, unable to put much weight on the injured leg. Moments later, Aiyuk emerged from the tent and had to be carted to the locker room.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Aiyuk pointed to his right knee while on the cart. The 49ers ruled their wide receiver out of the game within 20 minutes of him suffering the injury.

After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that Aiyuk may have torn his ACL.

Who is Brandon Aiyuk’s backup on 49ers’ depth chart?

Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel are the top receivers on the 49ers’ depth chart. Both were ruled out of the game against the Chiefs after Aiyuk suffered his injury and Samuel exited with an illness.

Behind them on the depth chart is Jauan Jennings, who is out in Week 7 as he battles a hip injury sustained during San Francisco’s Week 6 game.

After the top three receivers on the 49ers’ depth chart, the next three men up are Chris Conley, Jacob Cowing, and rookie first-rounder Ricky Pearsall, who made his NFL debut Sunday after he was out recovering from a gunshot wound he suffered in late August.

Brandon Aiyuk stats

Before the injury, Aiyuk had two catches for 23 yards against the Chiefs in the 49ers’ Week 7 game.

He entered Week 7 with 23 catches for 351 yards and no touchdowns on the season.

The 2024 MLB playoffs is nearing its end, and the World Series matchup is one fans across the country have dreamed about. It’s East Coast vs. West Coast, yet it’s still two teams that originated in New York. It’s two teams that don’t hesitate to spend big on star players. It’s two iconic franchises with storied histories, yet surprisingly few titles this century. It’s the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees.

While fans in the Big Apple may have preferred a best-of-seven Subway Series for the Commissioner’s Trophy, a classic Dodgers-Yankees showdown is a pretty stellar consolation prize. Both teams boast remarkable lineups brimming with All-Star talent. The Dodgers have muddied through numerous injuries to their pitching staff and are now only four wins away from their first full-season title in over 45 years.

The Yankees, meanwhile, spent big on superstar Juan Soto this offseason in order to compete for a title. They didn’t even make the playoffs a season ago, and now they are in the World Series for the first time in over a decade. Here is the MLB postseason bracket, schedule, and results for each of these teams ahead of the World Series.

This article has been updated with new information Sunday evening, Oct. 20.

The 2024 World Series is set.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees, two storied franchises, will square off for the Commissioner’s Trophy for the first time since 1981.

Both teams feature a myriad of All-Star talent, including the potential MVP in both leagues: Aaron Judge in the American League and Shohei Ohtani in the National League. Despite the star power both sides bring, neither team has experienced much postseason success in recent memory. The Dodgers won the title during the COVID-shortened 2020 season, but such a title does not taste as satisfying as one achieved during a full season.

The Yankees, meanwhile, are in search of yet another ring, their first since 2009. After failing to make the postseason in 2023, the team made a dedicated effort to improve, adding Juan Soto to their roster. Clearly, the move has paid off massively.

But which team is expected to win? Both teams were the top seeds in their respective conferences heading into the postseason, and both teams were top-ten in MLB in OPS. These teams are very evenly matched, but Vegas still has their favorites.

New York Jets offensive lineman Xavier Newman was stretchered off of the field and taken to the hospital after taking a hit to the head on ‘Sunday Night Football.’

The Pittsburgh Steelers were in the process of returning an interception when linebacker Patrick Queen made inadvertent helmet-to-helmet contact with Newman. The guard fell backward and hit his head on the ground after the push from Queen.

Newman remained on the ground for several minutes after the play and didn’t initially appear to be moving. Jets medical personnel needed to bring in a stretcher to stabilize his head and neck before carting him off of the field.

According to the NBC broadcast, New York immediately sent its offensive lineman to the hospital. Sideline reporter Melissa Stark shared that he had movement in his extremities before he left the stadium.

Xavier Newman injury update

Newman had to exit the ‘Sunday Night Football’ matchup after taking a hit to the head in the third quarter. The guard laid motionless on the ground for several minutes as medical personnel tended to him and teammates surrounded them.

All things Jets: Latest New York Jets news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Eventually, the medics transferred Newman to a stretcher, carted him off of the field and sent him to the hospital.

Newman is out for the remainder of the game.

This story will be updated.

Who is Xavier Newman’s backup on the Jets’ depth chart?

Newman was filling in for the injured Alijah Vera-Tucker at guard in Sunday’s game. New York has him listed as the backup for center Joe Tippmann and left guard Joe Simpson.

Jake Hanson has entered the game for the Jets at right guard following Newman’s injury. The Jets don’t appear have any other healthy interior offensive linemen should there be another injury. Rookie tackle Olu Fashanu is the last healthy lineman available.

LANDOVER, Md. –  Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales isn’t going to reinsert Bryce Young as starting quarterback despite the team riding a four-game losing streak.

Canales announced after Carolina’s blowout 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders that Andy Dalton will start Week 8 when the team travels to Denver to face the Broncos.

“We got to get prepared,” Canales said postgame. “We got to look at this film, get ready for the Broncos right now, and Andy will be playing next week.”

Dalton had a lackluster performance in Carolina’s 33-point loss that dropped the team to 1-6. The quarterback threw for just 93 yards and tossed two interceptions. His 44.0 passer rating was his worst as a starter this season.

Dalton was just part of a listless performance from the entire squad. The Panthers defense allowed 421 total yards, including 214 rushing yards to a Commanders team that played without quarterback Jayden Daniels for most of the game.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

“We have to put this behind us. But we have to look ourselves in the mirror and say, ‘alright, why do these games keep going like this?’ I think that’s the biggest thing,’ Dalton said. ‘For us, there are some many little details that we are gonna go back and look at and we’re gonna say we have to have certain things happen.

‘We have to make sure we have a good understanding of everything that we’re doing. When you don’t, it turns out like it did (Sunday). We have to be honest and real and everybody has to do it. And I’m talking to myself, too.”

Young checked into the contest with under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter in garbage time. Young, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick, was demoted after Week 2.
