SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Forget what it looked like. With the Kansas City Chiefs clinging to a two-point lead early in the fourth quarter and Andy Reid deciding to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Patrick Mahomes was hardly going to risk it with Bully Ball.

Sure, the circumstances were inviting after Mahomes took a shotgun snap and scanned the field. There was a crack of daylight, so he quickly bolted up the middle.

Now here’s where the optical illusion comes in. Mahomes dashed on a collision course to meet 49ers rookie safety Malik Mustapha near the goal line. He lowered his left shoulder. Touchdown.

In macho football parlance, it sure looked like Mahomes “trucked” the defender.

“No, I actually was not trying to lower my shoulder,” Mahomes explained after emerging from the Super Bowl 58 rematch at Levi’s Stadium with a 28-18 victory. “I was trying to absorb the hit because I knew I was going to be right there in the end zone.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

“And that ‘dad body,’ man. I had enough weight on me where I went down. So, it wasn’t like I was necessarily trying to seek out contact. I was trying to absorb it and get in the end zone and it just ended up looking good for me.”

In other words, don’t believe your lying eyes. In the heat of the moment in Week 7 – months before we’ll really know whether the Chiefs can make good on this mission to achieve a three-peat as Super Bowl champs – Mahomes is not crazy enough to risk himself and his team’s chances by needlessly trying to ramrod a defender.

Take it from Mahomes.

“The last time I lowered my shoulder was against Iowa State, and I had an AC sprain,” Mahomes reflected from his Texas Tech days. “And then Iowa State beat me by 56 points. So, I’ve stayed away from that.”

That Mahomes’ running was such a hot topic after the game was nonetheless significant. He set up the 1-yard touchdown plunge with a 33-yard scramble that marked the longest regular-season run of his career and included a deft pump-fake and stutter-step juke along the sideline that caused the hesitation from would-be tackler Dee Winters and allowed Mahomes an escape lane. And Mahomes’ decision to run rather than throw from the 1-yard line weighed on a bigger-picture equation.

Mahomes finished with the lowest single-game passer rating of his career (44.4) and for the second game in a row didn’t throw for a touchdown.

These anomalies from the NFL’s best quarterback didn’t just suddenly pop up. For the season, Mahomes has thrown more interceptions (8) than touchdown passes (6). His 82.5 passer rating would be the lowest since his rookie campaign as a backup, if it holds up for the season.

Yet even with Mahomes struggling to produce the 300-yard games and other fireworks from his arm, the Chiefs (6-0) are still sitting as the NFL’s only undefeated team.

“I just don’t think it’s normal for what you’ve seen from us because there’s not a lot of passing touchdowns,” Mahomes said. “There’s been a lot of turnovers, especially by me. So, I think it’s just showing the versatility of our team. It’s not just about me. It’s not just about the stats and the light show and stuff like that. It’s about playing team football.

“I believe that if we continue to work we’ll get better offensively throwing the ball down the field. Until then it’s nice to know that we have a great running game, we have a great defense and we’re able to execute whenever the time comes to win football games.”

Imagine how good the Chiefs will be when Mahomes gets into his rhythm. The defense, led by All-Pro defensive tackle Chris Jones and built by coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, has certainly remained solid amid its own growth. It was notable that two of the three interceptions of 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy came from rookies Chris Roland-Wallace and Jaden Hicks.

“Spags does a great job with the different schemes and different personnel,” Reid said, referring to Spagnuolo. “You think about two rookies being able to jump in on this thing and being a part of it and then putting them in position to make plays. He’s the best in the business of what he does.”

Well, the same can be said of Reid, charged to keep his offense flowing despite a rash of injuries to Mahomes’ supporting cast of skilled-position players. After Marquise “Hollywood” Brown suffered a shoulder injury in preseason that still has him sidelined, emerging second-year pro Rashee Rice suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 4. Those setbacks ruined the offseason plan to immediately upgrade the receiver corps. Now it’s more about survival on the fly. On Sunday, a fill-in option, JuJu Smith-Schuster, brought back to Kansas City as a street free agent, re-aggravated a hamstring injury.

And Reid has also had to make up for the loss of high-energy running back Isiah Pacheco, who went down in Week 2 with what was reportedly a fractured ankle. And how’s this for a solution: Kareem Hunt, who broke into the NFL with the Chiefs in 2017 by leading the league is rushing, also returned as a street free agent. He was on the market after being released by the Browns to end a five-year stint in Cleveland. And it’s been plug-and-play. On Sunday, Hunt ran for 78 yards with 2 TDs.

“Eventually, guys will start coming back,” Reid said. “The thing I appreciate the most is guys stepping up and then the other guys trusting them to step up and believing them, and the coaches just coach ‘em.”

As Mahomes alluded to, the Chiefs have continued to prove that they can win with multiple personalities. These “other” Chiefs, winning without dominating performances from Mahomes and his sidekick, Travis Kelce, are pretty good, too. Or ugly good.

In handling the 49ers, the Chiefs rushed for 184 yards – and with the subtle blocking schemes that paid off in producing big plays off jet sweeps and in finishing off drives near the goal line. And again, resourcefulness mattered on a day when Kansas City scored touchdowns on four of its five trips to the red zone.

Hardman had a couple of big gains off jet sweeps, including an 18-yard TD run. He also set up a score with a 55-yard punt return. Meanwhile, Noah Gray, the No. 2 tight end, led the team with 66 yards on four receptions.

Which reminds me: Whatever happened to Carson Steele? In Week 3, the fullback played a featured role and rushed for 72 yards. In three games since, he’s run for 35 yards.

Hey, this formula for the Chiefs has some any-given-week elements. And it’s a long way from the finish line.

“I love every single guy on this team because that’s the mentality – next guy up,” said Kelce, who had a quiet four catches for 17 yards but made an impact with some key blocks. “Everybody feels their role, and they want that opportunity to get out there and show the world that we’ve got everybody we need right here to win the championship.

“I think it’s going to keep expanding,” Kelce added. “Everybody’s role is going to keep expanding throughout the season.”

Which sounds like quite the warning for the rest of the NFL.

The 2024-25 NBA season starts tomorrow. However, up until today, we still did not know the Los Angeles Lakers’ full final roster. Sure, the team was making moves that led to furious speculation from fans as recently as Sunday when the team signed rookie Quincy Olivari to a two-way contract.

However, the biggest question still on everyone’s mind was whether or not LeBron James’ son, Bronny James, would earn a spot on the Lakers’ regular-season roster. Bronny James played decently during the preseason, but did he play well enough to warrant taking a roster spot from someone more deserving?

Did Bronny James make the Lakers’ roster?

James is currently listed as part of the team’s roster, per their website. He will make his Crypto.com Arena debut on Tuesday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Liz Cheney teamed up with Vice President Kamala Harris Monday in a last-minute effort to appeal to moderate Republicans who the former congresswoman believes might be uneasy about voting for Donald Trump but are afraid to say so publicly.

Harris and Cheney visited three counties: Chester County in Pennsylvania, Oakland County in Michigan and Waukesha County in Wisconsin. Each were won by Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who ran against Trump for the Republican nomination.

During a townhall in Michigan, Cheney framed the November election as a choice between ‘right and wrong.’

‘I certainly have many Republicans who will say to me, I can’t be public. They do worry about a whole range of things, including violence. But they’ll do the right thing,’ Cheney said.

The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney then predicted that ‘millions’ of moderate Republicans who are too afraid to go against Trump publicly will vote for Harris.

‘And I would just remind people, if you’re at all concerned, you can vote your conscience and not ever have to say a word to anybody. And there will be millions of Republicans who do that on November 5th, vote for Vice President Harris,’ Cheney said, eliciting applause from the audience.

Cheney was essentially exiled from the Republican Party for participating in a congressional investigation of Trump’s involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, events at the U.S. Capitol.

She lost her congressional seat in a primary battle two years ago.

In June, the Boston Celtics won their 18th NBA championship. They are looking to become the first team since the 2017-18 Golden State Warriors to repeat.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla nonetheless had an interesting – if borderline nihilistic – response when asked about the pressure his team is facing.

‘Zero,’ Mazzulla told reporters Monday. ‘No pressure. We’re all going to be dead soon and it really doesn’t matter anymore so, like, there’s zero pressure. You’re either going to win or you’re not. And when you win, you try to forget about it a week later, and when you lose, you try to forget about it a week later. So it’s not pressure, it’s an opportunity.

The Celtics topped the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the NBA Finals, winning their first title since 2008. Though Boston could be without center Kristaps Porziņģis for some time to start the 2024-25 season, the team is built to make another run, returning its cast of stars such as Olympians Jayson Tatum, Jrue Holiday and Derrick White and NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Jaylen Brown.

It all starts Tuesday, with Boston hosting the New York Knicks in the NBA’s tip-off game to open the regular season.

All things Celtics: Latest Boston Celtics news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

‘It’s an opportunity here over the next few years, however long we’re together,’ Mazzulla continued. ‘I’ve said this in the past: We have an opportunity to carry the organization forward, to double down on the history and tradition of what this organization has, and what else would you expect than someone expecting you to win all the time? I wouldn’t want someone expecting me to lose all the time. That would be debilitating.’

The Celtics won 64 games last season, seven more than the next closest teams, the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets. Boston rolled through the 2024 NBA playoffs, compiling a 16-3 record and never needing more than five games to take a series.

Mazzulla is entering his third season as Boston’s head coach and is carrying a 121-43 record (.738) into this season. Last season, Boston ranked first in offensive efficiency and second in defensive efficiency and, given that the team is returning all of its key contributors, the Celtics are once again the odds-on favorite to win the 2025 NBA Finals.

‘We have an expectation to win,’ Mazzulla added. ‘We have great character, great talent, and we just have to work to maximize that. We’re going to rely on the players to do that.’

When Jerod Mayo said his New England Patriots were ‘a soft football team across the board’ following the organization’s sixth consecutive loss, the coach took many by surprise – including his former boss.

In an appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ on Monday, former Patriots coach Bill Belichick – who not only led the team from 2000 through last season’s 4-13 finish but also was the architect of the roster – expressed disappointment in Mayo’s ridiculing of his team’s toughness after a 32-16 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London.

‘It’s a lot of the same players (from last year),’ Belichick said. ‘I’m kinda hurt for those guys, because to call them soft, they’re not soft.’

Mayo’s initial comment centered on his team’s performance in the ground game, both offensively and defensively. The Patriots ran for just 38 yards Sunday against the Jaguars while giving up 171 yards on the ground.

Belichick was quick to point out that last year’s New England team ranked first in yards allowed per carry (3.3). While the Patriots returned the core of their defense, the unit is without standout defensive tackle Christian Barmore – who has yet to play this season and remains out indefinitely due to blood clots – as well as linebacker and team captain Ja’Whaun Bentley – who is out for the year after suffering a torn pectoral in a Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

All things Patriots: Latest New England Patriots news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

‘Those guys went out there and did it even though we couldn’t score many points offensively,’ Belichick said. ‘I don’t know, I feel bad for the defensive players on that one, because those guys, that’s a tough group.’

Mayo, who served as linebackers coach on Belichick’s staff starting in 2019 before eventually becoming the coach’s successor, on Monday attempted to shift the emphasis of his remarks from the players to their play.

‘I felt like we just went out there and played soft. We’re playing soft at the moment,’ Mayo said. ‘Now, in saying that, do I think we have the guys in there that can turn this ship around? One-hundred percent. But that comes through hard work and getting better each and every day.’

The Patriots next face the New York Jets at home on Sunday.

The WNBA players are looking for more.

A day after the finish of what’s been a transformative season for the league, the WNBA Players Association announced Monday they are opting out of the collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA, set to expire in 2027, will now end after next season.

“It’s business,” part of the PA’s announcement read.

The move has been expected for months. Already on an upward trajectory, the WNBA has experienced explosive growth this season in tv ratings, sponsor interest and attendance. The new media rights deal alone is worth a reported $200 million a year, more than three times the current package. Sponsors are flocking to the league and the individual teams. The expansion fee for the Portland team was $125 million, and there’s another team still to come.

Yet player salaries, or rather players’ share of league revenue, lag far behind. The players are estimated to receive about 10% of WNBA revenues, compared with the 50% NBA players receive from that league.

The W’s minimum salary is $64,154 while the supermax is $241,984.

“With the historic 2024 WNBA season now in the books, we look forward to working together with the players and the WNBPA on a new CBA that is fair for all and lays the foundation for growth and success for years to come,” the league said in a statement.

South Korea demanded on Monday that the Russian ambassador protest military cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow, calling for the immediate pullout of North Korean troops rumored to have been deployed to help Russia.

The Associated Press reported Friday that South Korea’s spy agency confirmed North Korea sent 1,500 special operations troops to help Russia in October in support of its war against Ukraine.

Ukrainian intelligence suggests North Korea was preparing to send 10,000 soldiers to join Russian forces, according to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The South Korean Foreign Ministry said Russian Ambassador Georgy Zinoviev met with Vice South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Hong-kyun, when the latter ‘condemned in the strongest terms’ the North’s sending of troops to help Russia, which Kim said poses ‘a grave security threat’ to South Korea and the international community.

Kim also said South Korea and the international community will mobilize all available means to deal with the act, which threatens its vital national security interests, the foreign ministry added.

Zinoviev was quoted by the Russian Embassy as saying the cooperation between Russia and North Korea is not aimed at South Korea’s security interests.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte spoke to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol over the phone on Monday, who said Seoul will not sit idly by as the ‘reckless’ military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang continues.

Yoon also said South Korea plans to send a delegation to NATO to speak about Russian-North Korean cooperation, according to his office.

In a post on X, Rutte said North Korea’s decision to send troops to fight alongside Russia ‘would mark a significant escalation.’

Pentagon press secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder told reporters last week that the U.S. could not confirm or corroborate media reports on the North Korean troop dispatch to Russia.

Russia has previously denied using North Korean troops in the war, with presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov describing the claims as ‘another piece of fake news’ during a news conference last week. North Korea’s state media hasn’t commented on the issue.

North Korea and Russia, locked in separate confrontations with the West, have sharply boosted their cooperation in the past two years. The U.S., South Korea and their partners have accused North Korea of supplying artillery shells, missiles and other conventional arms to Russia to help fuel its war against Ukraine in return for economic and military assistance. In June, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a pact stipulating mutual military assistance if either country is attacked.

Many experts question how much the North Korean troop dispatch would help Russia, citing North Korea’s outdated equipment and shortages of battle experience. They say North Korea likely received Russian promises to provide it with high-tech weapons technology associated with its nuclear and missile programs, a move that will complicate U.S. and South Korean efforts to neutralize North Korean nuclear threats.

Ukrainian media reported this month that six North Koreans were among those killed after a Ukrainian missile strike in the partially occupied eastern Donetsk region on Oct. 3.

Many experts were previously skeptical of possible North Korean troop deployments to Russian-Ukraine battlefields because North Korea is preoccupied with its nuclear standoff with the U.S. and South Korea.

North Korea sent pilots to fight for North Vietnam during the Vietnam War and for Egypt during the Yom Kippur War in 1973, but there has been no known large-scale dispatch of its ground troops overseas.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Monday pushed back on the idea that Vice President Kamala Harris has struggled to distinguish herself from President Biden on the campaign trail.

A reporter suggested Harris has had difficulty separating herself from Biden’s domestic and foreign policy positions in ‘interview after interview.’

‘Does she have a green light? If she wanted to express a different point of view than the administration on any topic — foreign or domestic — she could do so? Or, is she required to be a loyal vice president to President Biden.’

‘I disagree,’ Jean-Pierre shot back, arguing that she’s seen Harris as ‘incredibly strong’ and ‘very clear-eyed’ in interviews.

‘She has indeed been a partner with this president and these successes that we have seen from this administration,’ Jean-Pierre said.

She said Biden has seen Harris as loyal but understands that she will be charting ‘her own path’ forward.

Pressed again to respond to allegations that Harris has failed to distinguish policy positions from Biden, Jean-Pierre said: ‘I’ve not seen that.’

Jean-Pierre said she had instead seen a vice president who ‘has shown strength and leadership’ and one who ‘cares about the American people.’

‘That’s what we have seen. That’s what many of the American people want to see. They want to see a fighter. And that’s who she is,’ Jean-Pierre said.

Since formally garnering the nomination for vice president, Harris has received flak for what critics believe has been her failure to clearly demonstrate how a Harris administration would be different from the Biden administration.

The question was put to Harris at a campaign rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Friday. Asked to name one policy she would’ve done differently over the last three-and-a-half years, Harris dismissed the question, saying it was not the tradition of vice presidents to criticize their presidents.

And earlier this month, Harris told the co-hosts of ‘The View’ she couldn’t think of anything significant she would’ve done differently than Biden.

‘There is not a thing that comes to mind,’ Harris said when asked the question.

When asked the same question during an interview with Stephen Colbert, Harris said: ‘I’m obviously not Joe Biden.’

The vice president has hinted at what a Harris administration would look like. During a border visit last month, Harris proposed toughening Biden’s border policies.

Harris has affirmed her support for legalizing marijuana saying: ‘I just think we have come to a point where we have to understand that we need to legalize it and stop criminalizing it.’ The vice president has also proposed lowering the capital gains taxes from the levelels under President Biden.

When the market is down, you can see which stocks Wall Street may be pumping money into. So on a Monday morning when the markets are down, this allows you to spot stocks that are bucking the intraday trend.

If you go to your Predefined Scans under Bullish Technical Indicators, you can see which stocks are experiencing sizable inflows. Let’s zero in on the Moved Above Upper Bollinger Band list.

FIGURE 1. PREDEFINED SCAN. We’ll focus on the last row, highlighting the stocks that have moved above the upper Bollinger Band on a day when stocks are largely declining.Image source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

Clicking on that selection and arranging the next page by “U” (Universe), the highest large-cap stock with the strongest StockCharts Technical Rank (SCTR) score was Applovin Corp (APP). APP also held the top spot on the Top 10 SCTR Report in the Large Cap, Top 10 category.

FIGURE 2. TOP 10 SCTR STOCKS ON OCTOBER 21, 2024. Applovin occupies the number one position with a 99.9 SCTR score.Image source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

A Little Background on Applovin Corp

Even if you’ve never heard much about Applovin Corp—a tech company specializing in mobile app marketing and monetization solutions—you still will probably recognize the name, as it’s been showing up on the SCTR reports for quite some time.

If you do your research, you’ll find that Wall Street has been exceedingly bullish on this stock for quite some time. You should start with StockCharts’ Symbol Summary; this will give you fundamental and technical info to begin your research. For example, APP’s one-year performance was an impressive +322.7%. But if you’re coming in late to the game and interested in scooping up shares of APP, you’ll have to check the technicals to see where a good entry point might present itself.

Let’s look at a daily chart of APP in light of the Bollinger Bands scan.

Applovin’s Daily Price Action

FIGURE 3. DAILY CHART OF APP. Note the SCTR line over the entire five months (it’s been that high for an even longer period).Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

In the SCTR line and APP’s relative performance against the S&P 500 ($SPX) in the panels above the price chart, note the following:

APP’s SCTR line has been largely above 90, indicating exceeding technical strength over multiple timeframes and indicators. If you look at the blue arrow pointing to relative performance, notice how the SCTR line prefigured APP’s superior performance against the S&P 500 long before it began outperforming the index. Although no indicator is a guarantee, the SCTR line is a strong tool for signaling the potential outperformance of a given stock.

Looking at the price chart, as the Predefined Scan pointed out, APP broke above the upper Bollinger Band, which is set to the second standard deviation. Only in rare cases can any stock maintain such a position. Typically, 90% to 95% of a stock’s price movements occur within the Bollinger Bands. There’s a strong chance of a pullback.

However, once a strong trend gets underway, price will often “walk” the Bollinger Bands—on the upside, it tends to “hug” the upper band, and the opposite is true of a strong downtrend.

The September price action illustrates this dynamic. In this case, it was particularly strong as APP’s “walk” took place above the upper band, signifying strong bullishness as the stock price rallied.

In the case that it pulls back

Look to the middle Bollinger Band for a potential bounce. If APP’s price falls below the middle band, you will likely find support in the range highlighted by the blue rectangle, as it encompasses a market support level and the area surrounding the lower Bollinger Band.

What does momentum look like?

According to the Chaikin Money Flow (CMF), buying pressure looks strong, even though it’s receding slightly. But a volume-based momentum reading from the Money Flow Index, aka MFI (which is like a volume-weighted Relative Strength Index indicator), shows that it was “overbought” and is now receding, forming a bearish divergence which warns of a pullback.

Meanwhile, APP’s SCTR reading remains strongly bullish. So, if you want to enter a position, keep an eye on the potential support levels outlined in the chart (specifically, the dynamic Bollinger Band levels and the market-based support level in the blue rectangle).

If market conditions change, especially if new and unexpected market factors come into play, then a stop loss a few points below $123 might be sufficient enough for you to reassess the situation and readjust your setup for a new entry point.

Tip: Make StockCharts’ Predefined Scans Part of Your Trading Routine

Incorporating Predefined Scans into your market assessment routine is like having a radar showing which stocks are ready to move. You’ll know what to research, and after that, analyze the stock chart to determine when and where to jump in.

The Bottom Line

Using one of many StockCharts tools to scan the market is a smart and efficient way to get an edge in spotting opportunities. This article focused on stocks that bucked the intraday downtrend. Through a few scans, I found APP, which has been on the top of the SCTR list for quite some time. This type of scan routine can help you find other market prospects in the future. Remember: don’t leave opportunities to chance. Scan early and often.

The NFL heads west for a ‘Monday Night Football’ battle between the Los Angeles Chargers and Arizona Cardinals in Week 7.

The Cardinals have lost three of their last four games, and it’s been a mixed bag overall for Arizona’s offense. The middle-of-the-pack Redbird offense ranks 17th in points scored and 15th in yards. The Cardinals haven’t cracked the 15-point mark in those losses, a likely very frustrating note for Kyler Murray, who has thrown eight touchdown passes this season.

Getting their offense on track will be a tall task against the staunch Chargers defense. Los Angeles boasts the best scoring defense in football, having allowed just 66 points through five games this season. That’s the M.O. of Jim Harbaugh, whose teams have traditionally played excellent defense and ran the ball with great success.

That could also prove to be a nightmare matchup for the Cardinals defense. Arizona has had issues with stopping the run in 2024, rankings near the bottom of the NFL in rushing yards allowed and rushing TDs.

USA TODAY Sports will provide live updates, highlights and more from the Cardinals vs. Chargers Week 7 matchup below.
