The Los Angeles Dodgers are World Series champions again, and this time they got the parade the franchise never had when it last won baseball’s Fall Classic.

The Dodgers overcame a 5-0 deficit to beat the New York Yankees, 7-6, in Game 5 Wednesday night to clinch their second World Series championship in four years. But their 2020 title came amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and public health protocols in effect in Los Angeles at the time prevented a parade from happening.

This year was different. The Dodgers were once again the best team in baseball and then backed it up in the 2024 postseason. Accordingly, the city of Los Angeles and the team had a huge celebration to commemorate this team’s accomplishments on Friday. It even included a nod to Fernando Valenzuela, the franchise great who died right before the World Series began last month.

This was a memorable afternoon for Dodgers’ players and fans alike, one that they all said afterwards exceeded even their grandest expectations. The team received its long-awaited parade treatment from throngs of fans that lined the streets of Los Angeles and a sold-out celebration ceremony at Dodgers Stadium in which all the team’s stars spoke.

Dodgers’ celebration is over, but Clayton Kershaw isn’t done

The formal ceremony at Dodger Stadium is over as most of the members of the 2024 World Series champions took the stage and thanked the fans. But many fans, players and their families are lingering, with the MLB simulcast providing more interviews with the Dodgers. Clayton Kershaw was among those to appear and he used it to make sure everyone knew his emotions weren’t a symbol for any sort of finality.

‘I’ll remember this the rest of my life,’ Kershaw said. ‘I’m so thankful that I’m gonna get to retire with a Dodger jersey on my back. Not soon, but whenever that day comes.’

Shohei Ohtani speaks at Dodgers World Series celebration

No interpreter needed for the Dodger Stadium celebration.

Clayton Kershaw: ‘Dodger for life’

The mic went from Mookie Betts to a tearful Teoscar Hernandez and then to Clayton Kershaw. The moment sank in for everyone as the crowd roared. Kershaw, a member of the Dodgers for 17 years, looked overwhelmed with emotion. He missed the Dodgers’ postseason run due to injury.

‘I’ve waited for this day for so long. I’ve waited to celebrate a long time,’ Kershaw told the crowd. ‘I didn’t have anything to do with this championship but it’s the best feeling in the world.’

‘Thank you. I love you guys. Dodger for life,.’ Kershaw added before posing once more with the World Series trophy along with the entire team.

Dodgers celebration features expletives, ‘Fat Joe’ jokes

Kiké Hernandez, shirtless during the Dodgers’ parade, just came out and dropped something akin to a wrestling promo as Dodgers players come up one-by-one to speak to the Dodger Stadium crowd.

Manager Dave Roberts called for the team to run it back. Walker Buehler took the mic and simply declared the Dodgers champions with a little profanity mixed in. Then came Hernandez.

‘Who has more championships in the 2020s than us?’ Hernandez asked rhetorically. ‘Absolutely nobody.’

He then thanked Ice Cube, both for Friday’s performance and the performance before Game 2. Hernandez said the Dodgers knew ‘we’d already won it’ as soon Ice Cube came out. He then took a dig at the New York Yankees and Fat Joe’s performance before Game 3 at Yankee Stadium.

‘He used to be fat, but he’s not fat anymore,’ Hernandez said. ‘After that performance, we’d already won.’

Ice Cube opens Dodger Stadium World Series celebration

Actor, rapper and entrepeneur Ice Cube opened the Dodger Stadium World Series celebration Friday with a performance, just like he did during Game 2 of the World Series. Wearing a No. 24 Dodgers jersey, he performed a couple of his songs and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts eventually joined him dancing on the stage set up in the outfield.

The rest of the Dodgers and their families are beginning to make their way out to the stage now.

Kiké Hernandez lost his shirt; Shohei Ohtani won’t

Dodgers outfielder Kiké Hernandez was at the front of his doubledecker bus during the Dodgers parade moving to the music without a shirt on.

Dodgers teammate Shohei Ohtani was subsequently asked from atop his bus on the MLB Network simulcast whether he might take his shirt off at some point during today’s celebration.

‘No,’ Ohtani said immediately in English, bypassing his translator. ‘Never.’

Earlier in the interview, Ohtani expressed astonishment at the number of Dodgers fans in attendance along the parade route. The players are starting to arrive at Dodger Stadium for today’s sold-out celebration ceremony.

Dodger Stadium sings happy birthday to Fernando Valenzuela

With Friday’s festivities occurring on Fernando Valenzuela’s birthday, the Dodger Stadium crowd made sure to pay tribute to the late pitching legend.

Jack Flaherty wants to stay with Dodgers

Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty was acquired at the trade deadline to add depth to the pitching staff for the final push toward the postseason.

Flaherty pitched Game 1 and Game 5 of the World Series to help the Dodgers’ win their first title since 2020.

The right-hander will be a free agent this offseason.

‘I love this city and I never want to leave,’ Dodgers pitcher Jack Flaherty said from the parade on Spectrum SportsNet LA.

The Harvard Westlake alum grew up a Dodgers fan but mentioned that he had no idea just how much the team meant to the city of Los Angeles. Multiple players have stated that 2 million fans were expected out for the celebration today. — James H. Williams

Orel Hershiser sweater

Orel Hershiser, who helped pitch the Dodgers to the World Series championship in 1988 and is currently a broadcaster for the team, was seen at Friday’s parade in familiar if not nostalgic attire.

Hershiser was wearing the same sweater (or at least something eerily similar) that he wore to celebrate the Dodgers’ championship 36 years ago.

Hershiser’s fashion sense is certainly up for debate.

Shohei Ohtani’s dog, Decoy, ready for parade

With the Dodgers players bringing their families along for the championship parade, star Shohei Ohtani made sure to bring his.

Walker Buehler beer bong at Dodgers World Series parade

The parade is underway as the buses move through downtown Los Angeles and we’ve already seen a candidate for the Dodgers player enjoying himself the most. Pitcher Walker Buehler was captured on camera atop his doubledecker bus using a beer bong while wearing the 1988 game-worn Orel Hershiser jersey he wore walking into Dodger Stadium for Game 1 of the World Series.

It was given to him by Hershiser, who won the 1988 World Series as a Dodgers pitcher and was laughing along during the MLB Network broadcast of the parade as this all played out. Hershiser declared he no longer needed or wanted the jersey back.

They’re having a lot of run in the streets of L.A. today.

Dodgers parade will also be Fernando Valenzuela tribute

The first Dodgers World Series championship parade since 1988 is being held on what would have been Fernando Valenzuela’s 64th birthday. The Dodgers legend, who was a member of that 1988 team, died last month and the team did not initially announce a cause of death or more details. Tributes came from far and wide during the World Series and they’ll continue for today’s celebration given the circumstances.

A memorial in Valenzuela’s honor is being filled with a new wave of messages – including Happy Birthday balloons – as fans flood Dodger Stadium for today’s celebration.

Dodgers arriving soon on doubledecker buses

The Dodgers’ players, staff and their families are aboard doubledecker buses while on the parade route, and aerial coverage from the USA TODAY live stream of today’s events captured their departure from Dodger Stadium and impending arrival for the start of the parade. The streets are filled with Dodger blue at this point. Horns are beeping as the buses get closer to all the fans. What a scene.

Dodger Stadium crowd growing

LOS ANGELES — If the crowd at the parade in downtown Los Angeles wasn’t already a frenzy, just a few miles north, Dodger Stadium is already getting packed for the championship celebration. People started entering the parking lots at 8 a.m. PT and, in just one hour, long lines outside the stadium gates and stores already formed. — Jordan Mendoza

Freddie Freeman delivers after months of anguish

Freddie Freeman had just won the World Series championship. He was voted the Most Valuable Player award. He sprayed champagne with his teammates. He embraced his father on the field. He hugged and kissed his wife and son.

He was just about to return to the raucous clubhouse when he was asked about that harrowing, emotional time in late July, the one that nearly turned his life upside down.

This had to do with Maximus, his 3-year-old son. Freeman had to leave the team for eight days in July. He seriously considered the possibility of not coming back until next spring.

How many fans expected at Dodgers World Series parade?

The official start of the Dodgers’ World Series parade is still almost two hours away, but fans have already lined the streets around City Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Mayor Karen Bass indicated in a social media post Friday morning the city is expecting “tens of thousands” of people to come downtown for the day’s festivities and the first Dodgers’ championship parade since 1988.

When is Dodgers World Series parade?

The Dodgers and their fans will celebrate the 2024 World Series title on Friday, Nov. 1, which is also Fernando Valenzuela’s birthday. The Dodgers’ legend died on Oct. 22 due to an undisclosed illness. The Dodgers last paraded in Los Angeles after winning the 1988 World Series.

What time is Dodgers World Series parade?

The Dodgers’ parade in downtown Los Angeles is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. local). Following the parade, a special ticketed ceremony at Dodger Stadium will begin at approximately 3:15 p.m. ET (12:15 p.m. local).

What will Dodgers World Series parade feature?

The Dodgers’ parade commemorating their 2024 World Series title will begin at Gloria Molina Grand Park on Spring Street in front of City Hall in downtown Los Angeles. Mayor Karen Bass will officially kick off the parade, according to the team, and it will then continue on a 45-minute route from 1st Street to Grand Avenue to 5th Street, culminating at the intersection of 5th and Flower Street. Dodgers’ players will be traveling atop double-decker buses.

The victory parade is free for fans to attend. The ticketed celebration at Dodger Stadium follows soon after the parade is completed. Team officials have indicated it is logistically impossible for fans to attend both events. Dodger Stadium parking gates will open at 8:30 a.m. PT, and stadium entry gates will open at 9 a.m. PT for the celebration ceremony.

How to watch Dodgers World Series parade

Both the Dodgers’ World Series parade and Dodger Stadium celebration will be broadcast nationally in their entirety on the MLB Network. MLB Network’s coverage will be simulcast on MLB.com, Spectrum SportsNet LA and other local television channels in Los Angeles. The legend of Walker Buehler grew Friday atop a doubledecker bus in downtown Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher, who won Game 3 and then closed out the clinching Game 5 of the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees, made it known early he would be in the running for the player having the most fun during the Dodgers’ World Series championship parade.

Buehler was captured on the national parade telecast chugging from a beer bong while wearing the game-used Orel Hershiser Dodgers jersey from the 1988 World Series that Buehler wore to walk into Dodger Stadium for Game 1 of the World Series.

Hershiser gave Buehler the jersey to use and laughed as the beer bong footage played live on the MLB Network national broadcast of the parade. Hershiser, wearing the infamous sweater he had on during the 1988 World Series parade, declared he no longer needed or wanted the jersey back.

Pro-Israel leaders and activists are expressing frustration and disappointment that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has yet to plan a vote on a bill aimed at tackling the rising tide of antisemitism on college campuses.

Many fear the delay could lead to the bill getting ‘watered down’ – or potentially getting derailed altogether.

‘This is a very good bill. It’s a very important bill. It comes at a very, very urgent time in terms of the dynamics of our country, and it should be passed, and it should be passed and signed into law right away. I mean, the sooner the better,’ said Elan Carr, CEO of the Israeli-American Council and former U.S. special envoy to combat antisemitism.

‘There’s deep disappointment that this has been slow-rolled,’ Rabbi Abrahm Cooper, former chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom and director at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, added. ‘I think, in many ways, taking that tactic only highlights the fact that there are obviously elements of the Democratic Party that are anti-Israel.’

Carr echoed Cooper’s suggestion that the delay could likely be due to concerns that ‘this bill could reveal fissures that would be embarrassing for some.’

The bill in question is the Antisemitism Awareness Act, passed in bipartisan fashion on May 1.

It seeks to mandate that the Department of Education adopt the same definition of ‘antisemitism’ used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), an intergovernmental organization aimed at uniting governments and experts to advance and promote Holocaust education. Under the bill, the IHRA definition would become standard for use in Title VI cases brought forward by the Department of Education.

Schumer has promised to put the Antisemitism Awareness Act up for a vote before the end of the year, according to Axios, which reported that he wants to attach the measure to the must-pass defense bill that will be voted on during Congress’ lame-duck session following the election. The move would pressure any potential dissenters to get on board with it.

According to Jewish Insider, Republican Sens. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin have opposed the bill on grounds it limits free speech, while the New York Times reported Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah has also voiced his own objections.

The American Jewish Committee’s Director of Policy and Political Affairs, Julie Rayman, pointed to Schumer’s ‘earnest commitment to passing impactful legislation to counter antisemitism in the Senate.’

But other proponents of getting the bill passed, such as Carr, expressed fear that Schumer’s decision to delay the vote until the lame-duck session – which starts after the November election – might jeopardize the bill’s prospects of being passed.

‘One thing I don’t want to see happen is that this thing will be amended in ways that will make it actually more harmful than not doing anything at all,’ Carr said. ‘My concern is it could get watered down, and the final product could do damage to the very causes that this bill is supposed to advance.’

Carr pointed to a similar situation that happened in Indiana’s state legislature, where a bill that passed by both chambers was ultimately vetoed by the governor because it failed to incorporate the entire IHRA definition of antisemitism.

‘Senator Schumer’s choice to delay a vote on the Antisemitism Awareness Act by attaching it to unrelated legislation is disappointing, risking unnecessary setbacks,’ said Florida GOP Rep. Carlos Giménez. Giménez voted in favor of the Antisemitism Awareness Act earlier this year and introduced different legislation targeting hatred towards the Jewish community. ‘I urge Senator Schumer to act now—protecting students from antisemitism must be a straightforward, bipartisan commitment that doesn’t get sidelined by political calculations.’

Meanwhile, a report released Thursday by Republicans on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce, which followed a year-long probe into antisemitism on college campuses, has led at least one Jewish leader to become concerned about whether Schumer will ever put the Antisemitism Awareness Act up for a vote.

The report alleged that Schumer dismissed the concerns of antisemitism on Columbia University’s campus, which saw months of anti-Israel protesting during the spring semester. According to published reports, Jewish students at Columbia faced such a significant rise in antisemitic behavior on campus that some filed a lawsuit against the university, while a task force created to address the issue found that the school failed to stop hate against Jewish students on campus amid the ongoing protests that followed Oct. 7.

Gerard Filitti is senior counsel with the Lawfare Project, a nonprofit which provides pro bono legal assistance to protect the civil rights of the Jewish community. He argued that in light of the Education and Workforce Committee’s report chronicling Schumer’s laissez-faire attitude towards campus antisemitism, there is ‘a very real concern’ that Schumer might not ever bring the Antisemitism Awareness Act to the floor for a vote at all.

‘Senator Schumer’s lack of leadership on one of the most pressing civil rights issues in our country is stunning,’ argued Filitti. ‘Schumer has had six whole months to bring this bill up for a vote, and his failure to do so is not just puzzling but rather troubling; antisemitism is not, and should not be made, a partisan political issue. As with other forms of racism and bigotry, it takes bipartisanship to combat Jew-hatred, and in light of the ongoing crisis of antisemitism we see on college campuses, this bill should have passed the Senate months ago.’

Fox News Digital reached out to Schumer’s office for comment but did not receive an on-the-record response by publication time.

With the Magnificent 7 stocks struggling to hold up through a tumultuous earnings season, what sort of opportunities are emerging on the charts going into November? Today, we’ll break down some of the names we’ve included in our Top Ten Charts to Watch for November 2024.

Some of these charts are overextended, having already logged significant gains in the last month. Others have already experienced short-term pullbacks and may provide actionable entry points around an ascending 50-day moving average. Still others may be worth following less as an investment candidate, but more as a good measure of overall risk appetite for investors.

Let’s start with one of the sectors that I have found investors to be generally underweight, even though the relative performance has really begun to shine in recent months.

Stifel Financial Corp. (SF)

In my recent podcast interview with Ari Wald of Oppenheimer, we talked about emerging strength in the capital markets group, fueled by likely Fed rate cuts into early 2025. Stifel Financial Corp. (SF) has made a new 52-week high pretty much every month in 2024, October included.

After recently pushing above the $105 level, the stock has now pulled back enough to bring the RSI back below the overbought level. While the overbought condition speaks to the strength of the long-term uptrend, we can see that previous pullbacks in May and February featured a very similar configuration with price and momentum indicators.

This is the type of chart in a clear long-term uptrend of higher highs and higher lows. But given the recent drop in the RSI after the October peak, I’d be looking for a tactical pullback which could provide a new higher low. The 50-day moving average is often an area where this sort of pullback could occur, similar to frequent tests earlier this year.

Home Depot, Inc. (HD)

The chart of Home Depot (HD) may provide a perfect example of the “fat pitch” chart, marked by a short-term pullback within a long-term uptrend. The stock broke above its March high around $390 in September, and, after peaking around $420, the price has pulled back to that same pivot point.

This chart provides a clear illustration of the technical analysis concept of “polarity”, where resistance later becomes support. Given that HD has pulled back to this pivot point around $420, as well as an ascending 50-day moving average, I’m inclined to label this as an actionable pullback within a long-term uptrend phase. Also note the RSI just above 40, which is often the lower end of the range for RSI when the stock is in a bullish phase.

Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL)

The Magnificent 7 stocks all deserve our attention given their significant weights in our equity benchmarks. But Alphabet (GOOGL) in particular may be the most important to watch in November, given its meager follow-through after earnings this week.

Alphabet has been building up an inverted head-and-shoulders bottoming pattern since August. The recent breakout above the neckline around $168 seemed to complete this pattern and indicate a high likelihood of further upside. On Wednesday, we saw a gap higher on earnings, but, by that day’s close, the stock was down by the lows of the day.

I’ve found that during bull market phases, breakouts tend to persist, as there are usually plenty of willing buyers interested in taking on additional risk for the possibility of greater returns. But, during bear markets, breakouts often will fail, as investors sell strength because they’re way more concerned with downside risk than upside potential.

After yesterday’s “trick,” investors received a “treat” at the end of the trading week, as the stock market regained its footing and bounced back a bit.

Even though the October nonfarm payrolls were much weaker than expected—up by 12,000 when the Dow Jones estimate was for an increase of 100,000 jobs—the market shook it off. The decline is attributed to Boeing’s strike and two major hurricanes. According to a recent Barron’s report, the Bureau of Labor Statistics survey responses were below average, so the data may be skewed. Unemployment is steady at 4.1%, and wages grew by 4.4% annually.

Stocks Bounce Back

The data doesn’t indicate the US economy is heading toward a recession. The major stock market indexes bounced back, with the Nasdaq Composite ($COMPQ) gaining the most after Thursday’s spooky selloff. However, Friday’s bounce didn’t change the Nasdaq’s big picture (see daily chart below).

FIGURE 1. NASDAQ COMPOSITE SHOWS DOWNSIDE MOVEMENT. Friday’s selloff didn’t change the technical picture. The index needs to close above its 21-day EMA to reverse the downside move.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

The Nasdaq broke above its tight consolidation range on Monday, but, after Thursday’s selloff, it closed well below its 15-day exponential moving average (EMA). Friday’s rebound didn’t change the technical picture. The index went as high as the 15-day EMA, but closed below it in what resembles an inverted hammer, although it didn’t close lower than Thursday’s close.

There is a weakening in market breadth, as displayed by the breadth indicators—Bullish Percent Index, Percentage of Nasdaq stocks trading above their 200-day moving average, and the Advance/Decline Line—displayed in the lower panels.

Small Caps Ain’t Getting Much Love

With interest rate cuts already in play and with more to come, you would think that small-cap stocks would start getting some attention. But we haven’t seen that yet. Even though the S&P 600 Small Cap Index ($SML) broke above a trading range on the weekly chart, there’s not enough buying pressure to send the index into an uptrend.

FIGURE 2. SIDEWAYS FOR SMALL-CAP STOCKS. The high probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate cut at the next FOMC meeting isn’t helping small-cap stocks, which continue to trade in a consolidation.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

Treasury Yields Jump

Yields fell after the weak jobs report, but that was short-lived. Treasury yields reversed and climbed higher, with the 10-year US Treasury yield closing at 4.36% on Friday (see chart below). $TNX is trading above its 15-day EMA. The question now is whether $TNX will reach its July 1 high.

FIGURE 3. 10-YEAR US TREASURY YIELD INDEX ($TNX) KEEPS ON RISING. $TNX has been on a steady rise since the end of September, when it broke above its 15-day EMA.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

Treasury yields have been trending up after breaking above the 15-day EMA at the end of September. The rise in yields doesn’t help bond prices, which move in the opposite direction.

The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) has been trading below its 15-day EMA since September 19, and Friday’s price action was very bearish (see chart below).

FIGURE 4. BOND PRICES SINK. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) has been cascading lower since mid-September when it broke below its 15-day EMA.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

While Treasury yields climb, the economic data shows the economy is growing while the labor market is cooling. This supports the narrative of an interest rate cut. The CME FedWatch Tool shows a 99.7% probability of a 25-basis-point interest rate cut on November 7.

Next week could bring some volatile action to the market, although given the way the stock market has been acting in the last two weeks, there’s no telling what it will do. The best you can do is take it one day at a time.

End-of-Week Wrap-Up

S&P 500 closed down 1.37% for the week, at 5728.80, Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.15% for the week at 42,052.19; Nasdaq Composite closed down 1.50% for the week at 18,239.92$VIX up 7.62% for the week, closing at 21.88Best performing sector for the week: Communication ServicesWorst performing sector for the week: Real EstateTop 5 Large Cap SCTR stocks: Summit Therapeutics (SMMT); Reddit Inc.  Just like how he did before Game 2 of the World Series, Los Angeles icon Ice Cube started the party inside Dodger Stadium with some of his most popular songs.

He played ‘Bow Down’ and ‘It Was a Good Day,’ the same short setlist as he did Saturday, and the crowd sang along with the legendary West Coast rapper. Then Dodgers manager Dave Roberts joined him on stage to rap and dance alongside Ice Cube before introducing the championship team.

Ice Cube changed several lyrics to be Dodgers-centric, and he changed one lyric in ‘It Was a Good Day’ to ‘freaking Yankees every way like Kobe,’ to honor Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

Dodgers utilityman Kiké Hernández took the microphone afterward and he said after Ice Cube performed prior to Game 2, they didn’t even need to play.

‘We didn’t even play the game. We had already won it,’ Hernández said.

All things Dodgers: Latest Los Angeles Dodgers news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Then he made a diss about Fat Joe’s performance before Game 3 by saying the same thing. After it happened, they didn’t need to play because ‘we had already won it.’

The NHL showed in October that many problems could be solved by waiting until the end of the month.

The San Jose Sharks went winless in their first nine games and looked like they might make it 10 after trailing 4-1 with five minutes left before rallying. Now they’re one of the hottest teams with a three-game winning streak.

Edmonton Oilers forward Zach Hyman, a 54-goal scorer last season, was snakebitten with no goals on 28 shots. Then he scored on a breakaway for the Oilers’ final goal of a 5-1 win in their final game of the month.

Some teams, though, haven’t caught on, particularly the low-scoring New York Islanders and the underperforming Boston Bruins.

Here are the winners and losers of the first months of the NHL season.

WINNERS

Columbus Blue Jackets coach Dean Evason

The Blue Jackets went through an unspeakable tragedy when star Johnny Gaudreau was killed when his bicycle was hit by a car. But Evason has the team in a playoff position heading into November. They rank seventh in scoring this season after being 25th last season.

Winnipeg Jets’ Kyle Connor

There are plenty of reasons the Jets have started 9-1: goalie Connor Hellebuyck could push for another Vezina Trophy, defensemen Josh Morrissey and Neal Pionk are thriving and there’s balanced scoring. Connor has points in his first 10 games and 17 points overall. With nine goals, he could push for his first 50-goal season. He was always going to make the U.S. team for the 4 Nations Face-Off and now he could be a go-to scorer at the tournament.

New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin

He’s a pending free agent and he reportedly turned down an $11 million-a-year offer, which would set a record for goaltenders. He’s making his case for more, ranking second in the league in MoneyPuck’s Goals Saved Above Expected.

Washington Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin

With five goals in nine games, he’s on pace to top the 42 goals he needs to break Wayne Gretzky’s record. What a change from last season when he didn’t get his fifth goal until Game 15, then went through a 14-game goal drought afterward.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Brandt Clarke

If the Kings were to survive the preseason injury to defenseman Drew Doughty, it would take everyone on the blue line to step up. Clarke is taking care of the offensive numbers, ranking second on the team with 11 points. He also made the highlight reel with a spin move and assist on Anze Kopitar’s goal.

Florida Panthers

The defending champions lead the Atlantic Division even with captain Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk missing time earlier in the season. Sam Reinhart, a 57-goal scorer last season, is leading the offense and Anton Lundell and Sam Bennett have chipped in. Now everyone is back.

LOSERS

New York Islanders

General manager Lou Lamoriello made only smaller offseason moves after the teams finished 22nd in scoring last season. Anthony Duclair and Maxim Tsyplakov had the potential to help, but Duclair is hurt and the Islanders are last in scoring. They’ve been shut out four times. Adding to their woes: The team announced that three-time All-Star Mathew Barzal was sent back to Long Island with an upper-body injured. A timeframe will be announced after doctors see him.

Boston Bruins

The star-studded Bruins’ best players have been fourth-liners Mark Kastelic, Cole Coepke and John Beecher. Free agent signee Elias Lindholm hasn’t caught on yet. The Bruins mixed up their lines on Thursday and were promptly crushed 8-2 by the Carolina Hurricanes. They’re sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic Division.

Nashville Predators

A team adding Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei shouldn’t start the season 0-5. They’re playing a little better but they’re still tied for the worst record in the league.

Macklin Celebrini’s delayed start

Celebrini showed in his NHL debut why he was drafted No. 1 overall, recording a goal and an assist. But an injury that bothered him in training camp got worse and he has missed the past 11 games. That likely leaves him out of the rookie of the year race, especially with Philadelphia’s Matvei Michkov and Dallas’ Logan Stankoven off to solid starts.

Colorado Avalanche’s injury bad luck

Colorado couldn’t do much in the offseason because the team had to account for the potential returns of injured captain Gabriel Landeskog and suspended Valeri Nichushkin. But Artturi Lehkonen was also unavailable and forwards Jonathan Drouin, red-hot Ross Colton and Miles Woods got hurt. Add a two-game suspension to rookie Mark Stienburg for charging. The Avalanche have trouble fielding a lineup. Fortunately, Cale Makar, reigning MVP Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen are off to hot starts. The overall result, though, is a sub-.500 record.

Goaltenders’ save percentages

A .900 save percentage was considered average and that number had been creeping up in recent years. But now there are some players who are way below. Pittsburgh’s Tristan Jarry is in the American Hockey League after recording a .836 save percentage. Colorado’s Alexandar Georgiev is at .822. Vancouver Canucks playoff hero Arturs Silovs is at .797. All told, more than 40 goalies are below .900.

The Dallas Cowboys are dealing with yet another key injury at the cornerback position.

Just days after the team announced it would be returning ballhawk DaRon Bland to the team’s 53-man roster, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones provided a discouraging update about cornerback Trevon Diggs.

Here’s what to know about Diggs’ injury and his status moving forward.

Trevon Diggs injury update

All things Cowboys: Latest Dallas Cowboys news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Jones didn’t provide much clarity on Diggs’ status for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. He simply offered ‘he’s not so sure’ that the veteran cornerback will miss the contest.

Diggs originally believed he was dealing with tightness in his calf, as he detailed after Wednesday’s practice.

‘It was a little sore coming out of the game,’ Diggs said, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. ‘Probably one of the plays I got hit or something. I’m getting treatment and working through it.’

Diggs’ injury kept him out of Cowboys practice on Wednesday and Thursday. Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy referred to him as a ‘game-time decision’ after Friday’s session.

If the Cowboys are without Diggs in Week 9, they would be significantly shorthanded at cornerback. Bland didn’t practice Wednesday or Thursday despite his activation to the roster while rookie Caelen Carson hasn’t played since Week 3 because of a shoulder injury.

Florida and Georgia signed a deal to keep their annual rivalry game in Jacksonville from at least 2028-31 on Friday.

The Gators and Bulldogs announced the terms on Friday, keeping the rivalry game in Jacksonville, where the matchup has been played in all but two seasons since 1933.

‘We are honored to extend the time-honored tradition of the Georgia-Florida rivalry game in Jacksonville for four more years. It is the result of many months of close collaboration with our partners at the University of Florida and the University of Georgia,’ Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan said in the announcement. ‘There is shared excitement by all parties for the game to return to Jacksonville in the Stadium of the Future, which will be a world-class stadium that meets NFL standards, starting in 2028. We are grateful that this matchup will continue bringing our communities together to celebrate college football and drive economic impact.’

The rivalry has been played in Jacksonville annually since 1933, excluding two years due to stadium renovations. Florida-Georgia will play at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in 2026 and Raymond James Stadium in Tampa in 2027. Georgia and Florida will both receive $1.5 million each from the City of Jacksonville in 2026 and 2027 despite not playing in the city, according to the Athens Banner-Herald.

“We do want to emphasize that this agreement structure is different than in years past, however, it provides the opportunity for the game to be profitable for the city as we now keep all the revenue for tickets, concessions, etc.,” Phillip Perry, chief communications officer for the City of Jacksonville, said in an email to the Athens Banner-Herald.

Georgia leads the series with a 55-44-2 all-time record, including wins in six of the last seven matchups. Florida’s last win over the Bulldogs came in 2020, when Dan Mullen was still the Gators coach.

Current Florida coach Billy Napier has yet to beat Georgia and is looking for his first win over the Bulldogs on Saturday.
