The 2024 NFL trade deadline will pass at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 5, but the Detroit Lions didn’t waste any time in swinging a deal to bolster their roster.

The Lions acquired veteran pass rusher Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns, according to multiple reports. Detroit will send a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick to Cleveland in exchange for Smith and a 2026 seventh-round pick.

Smith, 32, is an experienced NFL pass rusher with 65 career sacks over 10 seasons. The Lions will be Smith’s fifth NFL team, but he has been productive at each of his previous four stops, generating no less than 10 sacks for each team he has represented.

Who are the winners and losers of what could be the biggest move of the NFL’s trade deadline day? Here’s what to know about Smith joining the Lions.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Za’Darius smith trade winners

Detroit Lions

Let’s start with the obvious. This trade is a major win for the Lions, who were in need of pass rushing help after Aidan Hutchinson suffered a gruesome, season-ending leg injury in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Hutchinson generated a team-leading 7.5 sacks in five games before his injury. No other player on the roster has more than 2.5 (defensive tackle Alim McNeill) through nine weeks of action, so Smith – who has five sacks this season – should provide Detroit with a proven, pass rushing threat. That will bolster the Lions’ chances of winning their first Super Bowl in franchise history this season.

Other AFC North teams

The AFC North race is often a grueling battle of attrition. Those divisional matchups are never easy to win, as evidenced by the Baltimore Ravens’ Week 8 loss to the Browns, so teams like the Ravens, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals have to be happy that Cleveland is offloading some of its best players ahead of the NFL trade deadline.

Cleveland still has two games remaining against the Steelers and one each against the Bengals and Ravens. Those teams will be glad not to see Smith lining up across from Myles Garrett, as that should give each squad a better chance of knocking off the currently 2-7 Browns.

Isaiah McGuire and Ogbo Okoronkwo

Smith played 58.1% of Cleveland’s defensive snaps through the first half of the 2024 NFL season. Those snaps will now have to be taken on by other players on Cleveland’s roster. McGuire and Okoronkwo will likely be given a bulk of those opportunities with Alex Wright (triceps) out for the season.

This opportunity is particularly important for McGuire, a 2023 fourth-round pick who has played just 266 defensive snaps during his career. If the Missouri product can prove to be an effective pass rusher in a larger role, he could instill confidence as either a 2025 starter or a key rotational piece on the edge.

As for Okoronkwo, the 29-year-old has been a solid rotational edge player during his career already. That said, he has just eight career starts in 73 games but could convince the Browns to let him play more moving forward if he adequately replaces Smith. If he can do that, Cleveland may be more likely to hold onto the veteran ahead of the final year of his three-year, $19 million contract that ends following the 2025 NFL season.

Za’Darius Smith trade losers

The rest of the NFC North

The NFC North may be the best division in the NFL. The Lions proved themselves to be the class of that division with their 24-14 win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field in Week 9. Now, they are getting stronger with the addition of Smith.

The Packers, Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears can all still make runs at playoff berths, but Smith shoring up Detroit’s biggest remaining weakness establishes the Lions as the clear-cut favorite to win the division. Chicago’s path to the postseason may be particularly difficult with a 4-4 record and two games remaining against the stalwart Lions.

Myles Garrett

Garrett is on pace for another excellent season, as he has seven sacks through nine games. He is fresh off a three-sack outing against the Los Angeles Chargers, but his outlook for the remainder of the season is less rosy after the Smith trade.

Having a proven pass-rusher like Smith across from him was making it easier than usual for Garrett to get pressure, as teams couldn’t focus solely on him when protecting their quarterbacks. Now, opposing offenses will be able to focus almost all of their energy on Garrett up front since they won’t be as afraid of McGuire or Okoronkwo beating them as they were of Smith.

New York Giants

This may seem like a weird one, but the Giants are rumored to be exploring an Azeez Ojulari trade before the 2024 NFL trade deadline. Ojulari, 24, is much younger than Smith and has six sacks on the season despite playing behind Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. That should make Ojulari an intriguing trade target.

However, Ojulari’s expiring contract will be an obstacle in New York getting a notable return for him. Smith going for a relatively low price of a fifth-round pick and a 2026 pick swap may also drive down Ojulari’s value, so the Giants can’t be happy with the terms of this deal.

But given the pass-rush-needy teams across the NFL, it still wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Giants find a willing partner for Ojulari before the 4 p.m. ET deadline.

Sen. J.D. Vance, former President Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate, referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as ‘trash’ during a speech on the eve of Election Day.

‘The citizens of this country are not garbage for wanting to be able to afford groceries and a nice place to live. But in two days we are gonna take out the trash in Washington D.C., and the trash’s name is Kamala Harris,’ Vance declared.

In a post on X, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., opined, ‘Not too sure that Republicans going from calling Puerto Ricans garbage to calling a woman garbage is the whiz-bang political chess move they think it is.’

Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe faced criticism after cracking a joke in which he referred to Puerto Rico as ‘a floating island of garbage.’ He made the joke while speaking at Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden.

President Joe Biden later sparked controversy when he said, ‘The only garbage I see floatin’ out there is his supporters.’

Biden has suggested that he was characterizing Hinchcliffe’s comments as garbage.

‘Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump’s supporters at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it,’ Biden said in a post on X. ‘His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That’s all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don’t reflect who we are as a nation.’

Harris said that Biden had ‘clarified his comments,’ and that she opposes ‘any criticism of people based on who they vote for.’

Vance has served in the Senate since 2023.

The intensity of an election cycle can create an overwhelming environment filled with stress, debates, and a constant influx of information.

Finding peace amidst this chaos is essential for mental well-being.

Here’s how exercise, mindful social media use, and natural herbs can support your calm and clarity during these high-pressure times.

1. The Power of Exercise: Move for Your Mood

Physical activity is one of the best stress relievers and mood stabilizers. Regular exercise releases endorphins, which are known as ‘feel-good’ hormones, helping to boost your mood and reduce anxiety. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga session, or an invigorating run, movement serves as a way to channel and process stress.

Yoga and Stretching: These activities promote deep breathing and mindfulness, grounding you in the present moment and helping ease tension.
Cardiovascular Workouts: Running, cycling, dancing or even brisk walking can increase your heart rate, enhancing circulation and promoting a clearer mind.
Strength Training: Lifting weights or bodyweight exercises build not only physical strength but mental resilience too, giving you a sense of accomplishment and power.

2. Limiting Social Media: Filter Your Feed for Peace

While social media can be an important source of information and connection, it is also notorious for amplifying stress. The constant stream of updates, opinions, and breaking news can lead to information overload. Here’s how to use social media in a way that protects your mental space:

Set Boundaries: Allocate specific times during the day to check social media. Avoid starting or ending your day by scrolling, as it can impact your sleep and overall mood.
Unfollow or Mute: Curate your feed by unfollowing accounts that incite stress and opting for content that brings positivity and factual updates.
Take Breaks: Commit to a digital detox, even if it’s just for a few hours or a full day. This break allows you to recalibrate your thoughts without external noise.

3. Nature’s Calm: Herbal Allies for Anxiety Reduction

Nature has long provided remedies to ease the mind and calm the spirit. Here are three potent natural herbs that can help you maintain tranquility:

Kava Kava: Known for its ability to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation, kava kava is a popular herb used in calming teas and supplements. It interacts with the brain’s neurotransmitters to produce a calming effect, making it ideal for use during particularly stressful moments.
Lavender: Whether used as an essential oil, in teas, or supplements, lavender is celebrated for its calming properties. Diffusing lavender oil in your living space or sipping on a cup of lavender tea can help promote better sleep and reduce anxiety.
Chamomile: Often taken as a tea, chamomile is known for its gentle, soothing properties. It can help ease nervous tension and promote better sleep. Drinking chamomile before bed or during breaks can be a simple way to reset and unwind.

Combining these practices for a holistic approach to well-being can make navigating stressful times more manageable.

Start your day with a light exercise routine to energize your body and mind. Sip on a cup of chamomile tea during your midday break, and take a few moments to pause and breathe deeply. Limit your social media engagement by setting a timer and curating your content. As you wind down for the night, create a peaceful ritual with lavender oil and calming music.

By incorporating exercise, mindful digital habits, and natural herbal support, you can find balance and maintain a sense of peace during the most chaotic times. Remember, protecting your mental health is an essential part of navigating life’s pressures with strength and grace.

: Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., is firing a warning shot to agencies and departments within the federal government about a potential transition to a future Trump administration – telling the Democratic administration that it needs to follow federal requirements.

Hagerty has written to all federal agencies, in letters obtained by Fox News Digital, warning of applicable provisions in laws regarding appropriations that limit departments’ ability to transfer funds or change programs during the transition period.

‘As we move into a presidential transition period, I write today to remind you of your statutory transfer-of-funds authority and change-of-program requirements under the Further Consolidated Appropriations and Extensions Act 2024…which will continue to apply with the same force during the transition,’ he wrote.

‘Compliance with these requirements must be a priority for the outgoing administration, given the criminal and administrative consequences of failing to do so,’ he said.

He argues that the law limits moving funds, altering programs and prohibits employees from obligating federal dollars – with potential criminal sanctions or firing.

‘As the Biden administration works to transfer the power and authorities of the President of the United States and the Executive Branch in a timely, transparent, and lawful manner, adherence to these legal obligations is imperative,’ he wrote.

The letter comes ahead of what could become a fraught transition period should former President Donald Trump be elected to the White House for a second time.

The Trump transition team clashed with the Obama administration in 2016 over assessments that Russia meddled in the election. In 2020, Trump refused to accept the results of the election and was indicted last year on felony charges for working to overturn the results of the election.

President Biden made headlines in August when he said he was not confident about a peaceful transfer of power if Vice President Kamala Harris wins.

‘If Trump loses, I’m not confident at all,’ he said in an interview.

‘He means what he says. We don’t take him seriously. He means it,’ he said.

The administration began offering resources to both Trump and Harris in August ahead of a potential transition, which involves the vetting and selection of more than 4,000 appointees and depends of infrastructure built during the period before the election. The Associated Press reported that a federal transition coordination council has been holding regular meetings to prepare to hand over the reins in January 2025.

Trump ally and British parliament member Nigel Farage says Vice President Kamala Harris should pardon the former president if he loses in order to ‘dampen down potential tensions’ following Election Day.

Farage, the leader of the Reform UK party, made the remark this week in an interview with The Telegraph, during which he declared that ‘I still think he is going to win.’

‘If she gets in on Tuesday I hope she pardons him. She could look magnanimous and it would dampen down potential tensions,’ Farage said.

In September, Judge Juan Merchan decided to postpone Trump’s sentencing in New York v. Trump until after the presidential election. Trump had been found guilty in an unprecedented criminal trial on all 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree.

Farage also told The Telegraph that he has ‘never gone along with the stolen election narrative’ surrounding the 2020 presidential race.

‘The whole point of voting is we don’t need to fight,’ he said. ‘It is what we fought two world wars for. We settle our differences with the ballot box.’

Farage added that if Trump loses to Harris and ‘If it was clear and decisive then maybe it’s time [for Trump] to go and play golf at Turnberry,’ referencing Trump’s course in Scotland.

At a rally in Reading, Pa., on the eve of Election Day, Trump described Farage – who was in attendance – as ‘the big winner of the last election in the U.K.’

‘He’s a little bit of a rebel, but that’s good, you know? That’s good. Don’t change. Nigel,’ Trump added.

One of the most highly-anticipated men’s college basketball freshmen in recent years has finally arrived.

The top recruit in the 2024 class, Cooper Flagg, played his first collegiate game on Monday for the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils in their season opener against Maine.

There’s been plenty of hype surrounding Flagg leading up to the start of his college career. He proved he has the makings to be basketball’s next star when he left a remarkable impression at the Olympic training camp against NBA players on Team USA, which would go on to win a gold medal this summer in Paris.

Flagg starts the college basketball season as the heavy favorite to be the top pick in next year’s NBA draft, and with expectations always sky-high for Duke, plenty of eyes will see how Flagg does playing for the Blue Devils.

Cooper Flagg stats vs. Maine

The was plenty of buzz inside Cameron Indoor Stadium as Duke took on Maine in the season opener, and Flagg gave the Cameron Crazies plenty to get excited about after one game − even if there was a scare. He finished the night doing it all – with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in 30 minutes of action in the 96-62 win. He led the team in rebounds and steals, while teammate Kon Knueppel had a game-high 22 points.

Flagg showed off his passing ability early with two quick assists as Duke built a lead it never relinquished. His first points were rather uneventful; it came off of two free throws. Even if it was a slow start, Flagg picked it up quickly. Before the end of the first half, he provided his first highlight play of the season when he drove into the paint and reached high for an emphatic dunk.

The defensive intensity was impressive, with Flagg constantly disrupting passing lanes for the Black Bears. He had a breakaway dunk after he had a steal in the second half.

Duke fans held their breath late in the second half when Flagg went down and appeared to be in pain. It appeared he indicated he was having a cramp and he got up and walked to the bench with the crowd cheering him on. He sat for the remainder of a game, which had become clearly out of reach.

Flagg did most of his damage around the basket and at the free throw line. He was 6-for-6 from the charity stripe but 0-for-4 from the 3-point line.

Duke will be back in action on Friday when it hosts Army. That contest comes before the big matchup against Kentucky in Atlanta next Tuesday.

Patrick Mahomes expressed relief postgame following his ankle injury scare during the Kansas City Chiefs’ 30-24 overtime victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“I kind of awkwardly rolled the ankle a little bit. I think it hurt more because it’s the same ankle I hurt last week, so it scared me a little bit. But once I took my breath and calmed down a little bit, it ended up not being too bad,” Mahomes told reporters postgame.

Mahomes had to be helped off the field by the team’s medical staff midway through the fourth quarter. The Chiefs star quarterback was injured when he made a shot-put style touchdown pass to running back Samaje Perine for a 7-yard touchdown. Mahomes took an awkward step and his left ankle appeared to give out on him as he planted to throw.

Perine caught the football in the end zone, but all the attention was on Mahomes as he stayed on the ground in obvious pain. The Chiefs franchise quarterback was eventually escorted off the field by the team’s medical staff.

Mahomes was tended to in the Chiefs’ medical tent briefly, came out to workout his tender ankle and returned on Kansas City’s very next offensive series without ever missing a snap.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

“Once the doctors checked it out and got back and did the drops again, (Andy Reid) let me get back out on the field,” Mahomes said.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters that he considered taking Mahomes out of the game before he was reassured the quarterback was alright.

“He might have the loosest ankles in America. I mean it’s ridiculous how he can come back from those things,” Reid said. “I told him I was gonna take him out and he probably wanted to fight me. He’s a tough kid.”

After a loud ovation when he returned to the field on the ensuing series, Mahomes orchestrated a 15-play, 78-yard go-ahead touchdown drive that put Kansas City up 24-17 with 4:17 remaining in the fourth quarter. The drive was capped off when Mahomes tossed a 5-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins.

The Bucs were able to force overtime. But Mahomes led the Chiefs on a 10-play 70-yard game-winning touchdown drive in overtime to improve the club to 8-0.

Mahomes passed for 291 and three touchdowns in the overtime win. The Mahomes-led Chiefs are the sixth defending Super Bowl champion to start the regular season 8-0.

The Chiefs quarterback appeared on Kansas City’s Week 9 injury report with an ankle injury, but he was a full participant in practice. Mahomes famously battled through another ankle injury during the 2022 postseason as the team went on a Super Bowl run.

Mahomes conceded that his ankle will likely be sore this week as Kansas City tries to extend its undefeated streak in Week 10 versus the Denver Broncos.

“Obviously have a little swelling (Tuesday),” Mahomes said. “But on a short week, you go in there and take care of it and be prepared to play next week.”

SAN ANTONIO — Gerrit Cole and the New York Yankees each considered the possibility of going through a divorce, with Cole departing for free agency and the Yankees searching for a replacement, but in the end decided they couldn’t live without one another.

The New Yankees didn’t want to lose their ace and Cole never wanted to leave, so after talking for 48 hours they agreed Monday to pretend that a silly little opt-out never even happened.

The Yankees may have called Cole’s bluff when he exercised his opt-out in the first place Saturday and could have easily left as a free agent. But then again, maybe Cole called the Yankees’ bluff too, knowing that they didn’t want to lose their Cy Young winner

They finally just agreed there was no need for egos to get in the way, nearly five years after the Yankees and Cole agreed to a nine-year, $324 million free-agent contract in December 2019.

DODGERS WIN WORLD SERIES: Celebrate with this commemorative coffee table book!

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

So, Cole stays for four more years and the $144 million left on his deal and the Yankees don’t have to turn it into a five-year, $180 million commitment to keep him happy.

“It was something at the moment we weren’t necessarily comfortable doing,’ Cashman said, “but we wanted our players and ace back, and he certainly didn’t want to go. We had a lot of healthy dialogue about just trying to thread the needle and keep it in play. We could always talk further as we move forward about the future because the intent when we signed Gerrit was that he’d be leading our staff until the end of his career.’

There are no current discussions about a potential extension, even after they were granted a 24-hour extension to continue talks, Cashman said, but says that can always change in the future.

Really, this mini-saga turned out to be almost a game of chicken, with both sides ultimately blinking.

Cole, who was on the conference calls with agent Scott Boras, wasn’t prepared to leave.

The Yankees, with owner Hal Steinbrenner, president Randy Levine and Cashman on the calls, weren’t prepared to make a difficult decision.

Cole had the option of becoming a free agent once the Yankees told him they didn’t want to grant him a one-year, $36 million extension in 2029 – but chose not to do so.

“Maybe the grass isn’t always greener,’ Cashman said. “I think he’s happy where he’s at. I think he likes our setup. I think he likes who he’s playing for and working for, and I think he likes his teammates. And I think he think we have a legitimate chance to win.’’

The Yankees could have just walked away once Cole exercised his opt-out.

“We didn’t want that,’ Cashman said. “On our end, on behalf of the Yankees, we certainly wanted him to be with us as we move forward, and he is. And during the conversation it was clear, too, that’s still wanted he wanted. So, the easy solution was to rescind the options.’

The resolution prevents the Yankees from having to scour the free agent market to replace Cole, even with Cy Young winners Corbin Burnes and Blake Snell. And they weren’t about to enter the 2025 season with a starting rotation of Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil and Marcus Stroman.

“Listen, he’s one of the best starting pitchers in baseball,’ Cashman said. “Has been. He knows us. We know him. One certain thing we can count on is that New York is not too big for him. His work ethic is second to none. His prep is second to none. So, we are really just comfortable to have him still in play for us.

“We can try to build around him and [Aaron] Judge. My main focus right now is trying to find as much talent as we possibly can to find to improve our chances in ’25, but this was certainly a huge important chess piece to retain.’

They’re back together once again, and after their interactions during the 48-hour period, they appreciate each other more, too.

“That was a healthy dynamic for us,’ Cashman said, “for us to land back to us staying together.’

Now that we’re more than halfway through the 2024 fantasy football season, there are only two ways to improve your rosters — waiver wire and trades.

Evaluating a fantasy trade can be a daunting task. Most managers value their players more than their actual worth. That’s where the Week 10 fantasy football trade value charts come in. You can also check out my Week 10 fantasy rankings to help with lineup decisions this week.

The charts can be used as your very own fantasy football trade analyzer in standard, half-PPR (point per reception), and full PPR leagues. Someone sends you an offer? Simply pull out a calculator (on your phone, you don’t need an actual calculator) and plug in the values for each player. Don’t worry, six-points-per-passing-touchdown and superflex leagues are covered as well.

Important note: If you’re offered an uneven trade (i.e., a 2-for-1 or 3-for-1), include the values for the players you’d be moving to the bench or dropping within your calculation. For example: If someone offers you Tony Pollard, Jonathon Brooks, and DeAndre Hopkins (combined value of 79) for Saquon Barkley (68), it might look like you’re getting the better end of it. However, if you’re bumping down, say, Quentin Johnston and Darius Slayton (combined value of 29) in the process, it’s a net negative deal for you.

Another note: The ‘1 QB’ values are for standard scoring leagues. Quarterback value diminishes in PPR formats, so deduct roughly 5% of their values in half-PPR and another 5% for full PPR (this number drops as the season goes on and people look to consolidate). For example: Lamar Jackson’s value in standard formats is 36. In half-PPR, his value would be 34 (deducted 5%), and in full PPR, his value would be 32 (deducted 10%).

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

The rankings are based on how players should be valued in 12-team leagues. Players are sorted in order of their half-PPR values.

(NOTE: App users might need to switch to a browser if the charts aren’t showing up.)
