President-elect Trump dished out a fiery Christmas message on Wednesday in which he wished a ‘Merry Christmas’ to ‘Radical Left Lunatics,’ told the 37 prisoners whose death row sentences were recently commuted by President Biden to ‘GO TO HELL!’ and more.

‘Merry Christmas to the Radical Left Lunatics, who are constantly trying to obstruct our Court System and our Elections, and are always going after the Great Citizens and Patriots of the United States but, in particular, their Political Opponent, ME. They know that their only chance of survival is getting pardons from a man who has absolutely no idea what he is doing,’ Trump declared on Truth Social.

‘Also, to the 37 most violent criminals, who killed, raped, and plundered like virtually no one before them, but were just given, incredibly, a pardon by Sleepy Joe Biden. I refuse to wish a Merry Christmas to those lucky ‘souls’ but, instead, will say, GO TO HELL! We had the Greatest Election in the History of our Country, a bright light is now shining over the U.S.A. and, in 26 days, we will, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. MERRY CHRISTMAS!’ he added.

Biden recently announced that he commuted the sentences of 37 prisoners on federal death row to life sentences without the potential for parole.

‘Make no mistake: I condemn these murderers, grieve for the victims of their despicable acts, and ache for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss,’ the president said in a statement, but noted that he is ‘more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level.’

In a separate post, Trump declared, ‘Merry Christmas to all, including to the wonderful soldiers of China, who are lovingly, but illegally, operating the Panama Canal (where we lost 38,000 people in its building 110 years ago), always making certain that the United States puts in Billions of Dollars in ‘repair’ money, but will have absolutely nothing to say about ‘anything.”

He also discussed Canada, referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as the ‘Governor’ of America’s northern neighbor, while suggesting that Canadian businesses would boom if the nation became a U.S. state.

‘Also, to Governor Justin Trudeau of Canada, whose Citizens’ Taxes are far too high, but if Canada was to become our 51st State, their Taxes would be cut by more than 60%, their businesses would immediately double in size, and they would be militarily protected like no other Country anywhere in the World. Likewise, to the people of Greenland, which is needed by the United States for National Security purposes and, who want the U.S. to be there, and we will!’ Trump declared.

President-elect Trump got the attention of Panama and the entire international community when he said this week that the United States would demand that Panamanian officials return control of the Panama Canal to the United States if Panama does not halt the ‘rip-off’ of the United States.

Trump made the case that the United States built it, paid for it and that President Jimmy Carter ‘foolishly gave it away.’

President José Raúl Mulino shot back that the Panama Canal belongs to Panama. Trump noted that ‘it was given to Panama and to the people of Panama, but it has provisions. You got to treat us fairly and they haven’t treated us fairly.’

Make no mistake what Trump is doing is negotiating a new treaty for the Panama Canal and hence, a better deal for the American people. This is much akin to the playbook executed by President Teddy Roosevelt, who maneuvered a complex situation involving the French, the government of Colombia, and the Panamanian people to build the Panama Canal.

The Panama Canal is vital to free commerce and the national security interests of the United States. Approximately 73% of all ships coming through the Panama Canal are heading to or coming from U.S. ports.

It is also vital for international supply chains and global maritime trade itself. It played a huge role in the shipping of goods needed by allied forces during World War II, and thousands of U.S. troops were stationed there to guarantee its security.

Most concerning now is the growing influence of Communist China in Central and South America. In 2017, under the administration of former Panamanian President Juan Carlos Varela, Panama switched diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to Communist China. The then Trump administration went into action and, following a visit by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in October of 2018, the Varela government canceled five infrastructure projects with Chinese companies.

Craig Fuller, CEO at FreightWaves, recently pointed out that there are concerns that ‘China might embed surveillance technology within the Canal’s infrastructure, which could be used to monitor U.S. naval and commercial movements.’ He further notes that this potential for espionage increases strategic risks and could provide China with key insights into U.S. logistics and military operations.

This certainly helps explain why the commander of U.S. Southern Command, Gen. Laura Richardson, told the House Armed Services Committee earlier this year that ‘China is exercising our playbook of being present economically and equipping the United States’ hemispheric neighbors militarily.’ From a timing standpoint, the new president of Panama, who took office earlier this year, is seen as being more aligned with Trump philosophically, and thus, much better to negotiate with.

It is important to understand the history of the Panama Canal treaty. President Carter negotiated giving full control of the canal in 1977 to Gen. Omar Torrijos, the military leader of Panama who took power in a coup d’état. He was also an ally of Manuel Noriega’s.

The giveaway of the Panama Canal was hugely unpopular in the United States and was one of the reasons why Ronald Reagan was able to close the gap in his 1976 GOP presidential challenge to President Gerald Ford. As Reagan was preparing for his subsequent and successful run for the presidency in 1980, he addressed this issue in a speech at Western Kentucky University.

There he blasted the Carter administration for moving forward with the transfer of the canal to ‘a man (Omar Torrijos) who’s there, not because he had the most votes, but because he had the most guns.’ Reagan went on to say internationally that the world would not see the giveaway of the canal ‘as a magnanimous gesture on our part…’ but as ‘once again America backing away and retreating in the face of trouble.’

One thing that many observers are overlooking is that many legal scholars agree that a United States president has the power to rescind or terminate a treaty. For example, President George W. Bush unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002.

Likewise, President William MicKinley terminated certain articles in a commercial treaty with Switzerland, and President Calvin Coolidge withdrew the United States from a convention to prevent smuggling with Mexico.

And during World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt unilaterally terminated a number of treaties. Look for Trump to use this threat to negotiate a treaty, or at least extract concessions, from the Panamanian government.

Trump has inherited the most complex foreign policy landscape a commander in chief has ever faced. Whether it is the growing threat of Communist China, the thought of Iran with nuclear weapons, turmoil in the Middle East, or the Russian-Ukraine situation, Trump is facing constant national security challenges on the world stage.

Yes, it is an international chess game and, thus far, America’s incoming commander in chief is playing it like the late World Chess champion Bobby Fischer.

LeBron James is the king of Christmas.

The Los Angeles Lakers narrowly defeated the Golden State Warriors 115-113 Wednesday in their Christmas Day game at the Chase Center.

James had 31 points, 10 assists, four rebounds and two steals, extending his NBA record for the most points scored by any player on Christmas Day to 507. James also holds the record for the most Christmas Day appearances (19) and wins (11).

“I love the NFL, but Christmas is our day,” James said after the game.

This marked James’ and Curry’s fourth Christmas Day matchup against each other. James has now won three on Christmas Day vs. Curry (2016, 2018, 2024), while Curry has only won one holiday game against James (2015).

Curry finished with 38 points, six assists and one rebound. Andrew Wiggins added 21 points and 12 rebounds.

The Lakers won despite getting no points and only 7 minutes from Anthony Davis, who exited early with an ankle injury. Austin Reaves stepped up, recording a 26-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist triple-double that included scoring the game-winner with just a second to go.

Lakers vs. Warriors highlights

Final: Lakers 115, Warriors 113

Austin Reaves’ last-second layup lifts Lakers

Reaves capped his triple-double off with the game-winner. With 6.1 seconds remaining in the contest, Max Christie inbounded the ball to Reaves, who drove to the cup for a layup to put the Lakers up 115-113 with 1 second remaining in the contest. Steph Curry got a shot off from beyond halfcourt, but couldn’t muster up anymore late-game heroics. The Lakers win 115-113.

Steph Curry pulls Warriors even with incredible 3s

Steph Curry cannot be stopped. Curry knocked down two 3-pointers in the span of 13 seconds to tie it up 113-113 with 6.3 seconds left in the contest.

Lakers pulling away in final minutes

The Warriors pulled within three points of the Lakers with 4:58 remaining in the game, but Austin Reaves knocked down a 27-foot 3 to extend the lead back up to six, 100-94. On the Lakers’ next possession, Reaves hit a jumper to put the Lakers up by eight with 3:48 remaining.

Anthony Davis out

Anthony Davis is done for the night. The Lakers ruled Davis out for the remainder of the contest due to an apparent ankle injury. He exited with 4:48 remaining in the first quarter after appearing to roll his ankle while under the basket. Davis was scoreless (0-for-3 FG) when he headed back to the locker room.

Lakers up by 9 in third quarter

The Lakers are up to their largest lead of the night with 3:50 remaining in the third quarter. Rui Hachimura knocked down a 3-point shot to put the Lakers up 78-69. Hachimura is up to 12 points on the night.

Halftime: Lakers 55, Warriors 52

The Lakers have a slight advantage over the Warriors heading into halftime, holding a 55-52 lead.

Los Angeles is shooting 41.7% from the field and 6-for-19 from 3. LeBron James has a game-high 19 points and three rebounds. Austin Reaves has 10 points, while Dalton Knecht added 11 points off the bench.

Golden State is shooting 45.7% from the field and 9-for-25 from 3. Stephen Curry leads the Warriors with 16 points and four assists, while Andrew Wiggins has 14 points.

The Warriors have only converted one free throw the entire first half, compared to the Lakers’ 9-for-9 mark from the free throw line.

Lakers go on 16-2 run

Los Angeles is back in the driver’s seat thanks to a 16-2 run in the second quarter. The Lakers lead 39-30 with 6:53 remaining in the first half. LeBron James is up to 13 points, while Dalton Knecht has 11 points off the bench.

The Lakers are shooting 42.9% from the field and are 5-for-13 from 3. The Warriors are shooting 37.5% from the field and 6-for-21 from 3.

End of first quarter: Lakers 23, Warriors 23

We are all tied up after one quarter of play.

The Warriors led by as many as eight points in the first quarter before the Lakers were able to storm back and tie things up heading into the second quarter.

Andrew Wiggins is already up to 10 points for Golden State, while Dennis Schroder has six points.

LeBron James leads the Lakers with eight points, while Dalton Knecht added five points off the bench. Anthony Davis was scoreless (0-for-3) before exiting early.

Anthony Davis heads to locker room with apparent injury

Lakers star Anthony Davis appeared to roll his ankle as he was under the basket in the first quarter. He was down in pain clutching his left ankle before trying to walk off the pain. He was able to leave the floor under his own power, but headed back to the locker room.

Every week for the duration of the 2024 NFL regular season, USA TODAY Sports will provide timely updates to the league’s ever-evolving playoff picture − typically starting after Sunday afternoon’s late games and then moving forward for the remainder of the week (through Monday’s and Thursday’s games or Saturday’s, if applicable. And, when Christmas falls on a Wednesday, we’ll be watching then, too.)

What just happened? What does it mean? What are the pertinent factors (and, perhaps, tiebreakers) prominently in play as each conference’s seven-team bracket begins to crystallize? All will be explained and analyzed up to the point when the postseason field is finalized on Sunday, Jan. 5.

Here’s where things stand with Week 17 of the 2024 season underway:

NFC playoff picture

x – 1. Detroit Lions (13-2), NFC North leaders: Last week, they were in a three-way tie atop the conference and deadlocked for the division lead with Minnesota. But Philadelphia’s Week 16 defeat makes it increasingly likely the Lions and Vikings will be playing for all the important regular-season marbles in Week 18. Winning out gives the Lions everything they want, including home-field advantage. So would a win at San Francisco on Monday combined with a Minnesota loss. Remaining schedule: at 49ers, vs. Vikings

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

x – 2. Philadelphia Eagles (12-3), NFC East leaders: They’re coming off a rough Sunday. They lost their 10-game winning streak, an opportunity to wrap up the division and fell a game behind Detroit and Minnesota in the race for home-field advantage. But they’re still just one win or Commanders loss from locking up the division and at least the No. 2 seed. Remaining schedule: vs. Cowboys, vs. Giants

3. Los Angeles Rams (9-6), NFC West leaders: Beat Seattle in Week 18, and the division is theirs. Or a win over Arizona and some help would also get it done Saturday. Remaining schedule: vs. Cardinals, vs. Seahawks

4. Atlanta Falcons (8-7), NFC South leaders: Rookie QB Michael Penix Jr. won his starting debut against the lowly Giants. But the real payoff came last Sunday night, when the Bucs – they were swept earlier in the season by Atlanta – lost at Dallas. The Falcons can win the division in Week 17 with another victory and another Tampa Bay loss. Remaining schedule: at Commanders, vs. Panthers

x – 5. Minnesota Vikings (13-2), wild card No. 1: Like Detroit, they control their very own potentially high-yield fate – win out, and the NFC North and No. 1 seed are Minnesota’s. Remaining schedule: vs. Packers, at Lions

x – 6. Green Bay Packers (11-4), wild card No. 2: Getting swept by Detroit and losing once already to Minnesota relegated the Pack to wild-card status … though Monday’s whitewash of the Saints was the latest reminder that this might actually be the last NFC North team you want to see in January. But given Packers are guaranteed to open the playoffs on the road, it will be interesting to see how much they play their key starters over the next two weeks given the limited upside to doing so. Remaining schedule: at Vikings, vs. Bears

7. Washington Commanders (10-5), wild card No. 3: Despite beating the Eagles, they didn’t quite clinch a postseason berth – but did remain alive in the NFC East while eliminating both the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers from the playoff picture. A win in Week 17 puts Washington into the dance. A loss could be highly problematic in the tiebreaker space as it would open an alternate avenue for the Bucs, who beat Washington in Week 1. Remaining schedule: vs. Falcons, at Cowboys

8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-7), in the hunt: Sunday night, they couldn’t handle a Dallas team eliminated from playoff contention earlier in the day. The Bucs could see their aspirations to keep the NFC South throne die this week. Remaining schedule: vs. Panthers, vs. Saints

9. Seattle Seahawks (8-7), in the hunt: After Sunday’s loss to Minnesota, they’re going to need help to win the NFC West. Neither the Seahawks nor Rams have a pathway to a wild-card berth. Remaining schedule: at Bears, at Rams

AFC playoff picture

yz – 1. Kansas City Chiefs (15-1), AFC West champions: By crushing the Steelers, they secured home-field advantage and a first-round bye – and really two-plus weeks off in actuality depending on whom they want to play in what’s now a meaningless Week 18 contest for the champs. Remaining schedule: at Broncos, BYE

y – 2. Buffalo Bills (12-3), AFC East champions: Now out of the running for the No. 1 seed, finishing second in the conference should still have meaning given the road to Super Bowl 59 could go through Western New York if the Chiefs lose their playoff opener. Remaining schedule: vs. Jets, at Patriots

x – 3. Baltimore Ravens (11-5), AFC North leaders: Catching fire? Probably an understatement. The Steelers’ loss before Baltimore’s Christmas kickoff vaulted the Ravens atop the division, and their dominant win over Houston keeps them there. A win or tie in Week 18 clinches it. Remaining schedule: vs. Browns

y – 4. Houston Texans (9-7), AFC South champions: They rule a weak division for the second straight year, however Wednesday’s loss locked them into the fourth seed … which will likely mean a tough wild-card matchup, albeit in Houston, against an AFC North team. Remaining schedule: at Titans

x – 5. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6), wild card No. 1: That’s three losses in a row, Wednesday’s flat performance against Kansas City costing them first place in the AFC North. However they can capture the divisional title by winning in Week 18 if Baltimore also loses to Cleveland. Remaining schedule: vs. Bengals

6. Los Angeles Chargers (9-6), wild card No. 2: By sweeping the Broncos for the first time in 14 years, they prevented Denver from clinching in Week 16 while leapfrogging their division rivals and picking up the season tiebreaker (by virtue of the sweep). One more win locks Bolts into the field. Remaining schedule: at Patriots, at Raiders

7. Denver Broncos (9-6), wild card No. 3: They had a win-and-in scenario last week to stamp their first postseason trip since winning Super Bowl 50 nine years ago. Still, one more victory will advance Denver to the playoffs. Possibly major trouble ahead if they lose to Cincinnati in Week 17 … though the Broncos’ Week 18 game against Kansas City now means nothing to the Chiefs. Remaining schedule: at Bengals, vs. Chiefs

8. Indianapolis Colts (7-8), in the hunt: Technically alive after winning on Sunday. Their record in AFC games (6-5) is better than Miami’s (5-5) and Cincinnati’s (4-6). Remaining schedule: at Giants, vs. Jaguars

9. Miami Dolphins (7-8), in the hunt: Technically alive after winning on Sunday. Remaining schedule: at Browns, at Jets

10. Cincinnati Bengals (7-8), in the hunt: Technically alive after winning on Sunday. Though they appear like the best team outside the field, they’ll need the most help to get in, including losses by the Colts and Dolphins. Remaining schedule: vs. Broncos, at Steelers

Legendary Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey has died at age 79, his son, Jake, wrote in a post on X on Wednesday morning.

According to that same post, Bergey waged a three-year battle with cancer before his passing. According to an article on the Eagles’ website, he was diagnosed with cancer that started in his jaw.

Bergey was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals and spent five years with the team — he won the American Football League’s Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 1969 — but he’s perhaps best known for his stint with the Philadelphia Eagles between 1974 and 1980. He went to four Pro Bowls and was named to five All-Pro teams (two-time First Team selection) during his time with the Eagles. He was once the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL and once held the record for most interceptions by a linebacker.

He also was a part of the team’s pre-game and post-game broadcasts. Additionally, he was a former football coach for The Tatnall School in Wilmington, Delaware.

‘We are saddened to learn of the passing of Bill Bergey,’ Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said in a statement Wednesday. ‘An Eagles all-time great, Bill was a legendary linebacker who gained the respect of players and coaches across the league for his blue-collar work ethic and hard-nosed play. He was rightfully inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame in 1988. Bill exemplified what it meant to be an Eagle in every way, and proudly represented the team in the community well after his playing days were over. We will all miss him dearly and extend our deepest condolences to the entire Bergey family.’

With former president and now President-elect Trump term-limited and constitutionally unable to run again for the White House in 2028, Vice President-elect JD Vance is on a glide path to be the heir apparent to the America First movement and the Republican Party’s powerful MAGA base.

It was a point driven home by Donald Trump Jr., the former and future president’s eldest son and powerful ally of the vice president-elect.

‘We are getting four more years of Trump and then eight years of JD Vance!’ Trump Jr. said on the campaign trail in Ohio a few weeks ahead of November’s election.

Plenty of Republican politicians, strategists and pundits agree that Vance, who was elected to the Senate in Ohio just two years ago, will likely be the clear frontrunner in the next Republican presidential nomination race.

‘The vice president will be in the catbird seat. No question about it,’ longtime Republican consultant Dave Carney told Fox News Digital.

Carney, a veteran of numerous Republican presidential campaigns over the past four decades, said Vance ‘is the guy to beat.’

David Kochel, another longtime GOP strategist with plenty of presidential campaign experience, told Fox News that Vance is the frontrunner due to ‘the size and the scope of last week’s victory and the implied passing of the torch from Donald Trump.’

‘There will be no shortage of people looking at it. But most people looking at it are seeing the relative strength of the Trump victory and the movement,’ Kochel said.

And with Trump’s support in a party firmly in the president-elect’s grip, the 40-year-old Vance will be extremely hard to knock off.

However, Kochel noted that ‘nobody will completely defer to JD Vance. There will be a contest. There always is.’

Carney added that ‘there may be other people who challenge him [Vance]… there’s a lot of people who want to be president, but it will be a very hard lane other than the Trump lane.’

He added that a possible rough four years for the Trump/Vance administration would give potential Vance challengers ‘opportunities.’

However, he praised the vice president-elect’s messaging and accessibility on the campaign trail and that ‘he is the guy to beat, regardless of whether it’s a good four years or a rough four years.’

Carney also touted that the Republican Party has a ‘deep bench.’

Republican National Committee chair Michael Whatley, a top Trump ally, said in a recent Fox News Digital interview that he’s ‘very excited about the bench that we have in the Republican Party right now.’

Pointing to Trump’s remaking of the GOP, Whatley added that ‘as we go into 2028, we are in a great position to be able to continue the momentum of this agenda and this movement.’

But he also emphasized that regardless of Vance’s likely frontrunner status as 2028 nears, the RNC will hold to its traditional role of staying neutral in an open and contested presidential primary.

Here’s a look at some of those on the bench that may have national aspirations and ambitions in 2028, or beyond.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis

The conservative governor of Florida was flying high after a landslide re-election in 2022, but an unsuccessful 2024 presidential primary run and a bruising battle with Trump knocked Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis down in stature.

However, the term-limited 46-year-old governor, who has two years left in office steering Florida, proved over the past few years his fundraising prowess and retains plenty of supporters across the country.

DeSantis was also able, to a degree, to repair relations with Trump, helped raise money for the GOP ticket during the general election, and earned a prime time speaking slot at July’s convention.

It’s likely that DeSantis, who sources say Trump has considered as a plan B for Defense secretary if his nominee Pete Hegseth runs into trouble, has his eyes on another White House run.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp

The popular conservative governor is one of the few in the GOP who can claim he faced Trump’s wrath and not only survived, but thrived.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who is term-limited, has two years left in office and enjoys strong favorable ratings in a crucial battleground state.

Expect to see the 61-year-old Kemp on the campaign trail across the country for fellow Republicans in 2026, as his national profile expands.

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin

With his 2021 gubernatorial victory – the first by a Republican in Virginia in a dozen years – Gov. Glenn Youngkin instantly became a GOP rising star.

In Virginia, governors are limited to one four-year term, which means Youngkin has one year left in office.

The 58-year-old governor, who hails from the Republican Party’s business wing but has been able to thrive in a MAGA-dominated party, likely harbors national ambitions.

A first step could be a Cabinet post in the second Trump administration after his term as governor ends.

Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas

Sen. Ted Cruz was the runner-up to Trump in the blockbuster 2016 Republican presidential battle.

The controversial conservative firebrand passed on challenging Trump again in 2024, as he ran for what was thought to be another difficult re-election bid, after narrowly surviving his 2018 re-election.

However, the 53-year-old senator ended up winning a third six-year term in the Senate by nearly nine points.

Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas

The Army veteran, who served in combat in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars before becoming a rising star in Republican Party politics, was considered to be on the larger list of potential Trump running mates.

The now-47-year-old Sen. Tom Cotton seriously mulled a 2024 White House run of his own before deciding against it in late 2022, putting his young family ahead of political ambitions. However, he did not rule out a future presidential bid.

Cotton is currently bidding for the GOP conference chair, the number three leadership position in the incoming Senate Republican majority.

Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri

The 44-year-old Sen. Josh Hawley, along with Cotton, is another rising conservative star in the Senate.

Hawley is also a strong defender of Trump’s America First agenda and is thought to have national aspirations.

Former Ambassador Nikki Haley

The former two-term South Carolina governor, who served as U.N. ambassador in Trump’s first term, was the first GOP challenger to jump into the race against the former president in the 2024 nomination race.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley outlasted the rest of the field, becoming the final challenger to Trump before ending her White House bid in March.

While the 52-year-old Haley ended up backing Trump in the general election, her earlier clashes with the now president-elect during the primaries left their mark. Even though she addressed the GOP faithful at the convention, her political future in a party dominated by Trump is uncertain.

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders

The first-term conservative governor of Arkansas is a well-known figure in MAGA world, thanks to her tenure as Trump’s longest-serving White House press secretary during his first administration.

The 42-year-old Sanders, the daughter of former Arkansas governor and former two-time presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, has also grabbed national attention for delivering the GOP’s response to President Biden’s 2023 State of the Union address.

Former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy

The multimillionaire biotech entrepreneur, anti-woke crusader and first-time candidate was one of the biggest surprises during the GOP presidential nomination race.

The now 39-year-old Vivek Ramaswamy, who touted during his campaign that he and Trump were the only two ‘America First candidates’ in the large field of contenders, eventually dropped out of the race and became a major backer and surrogate for the former president.

He’s now teaming up with billionaire Trump supporter and pal Elon Musk to steer DOGE, the new presidential advisory commission that will look to make massive cuts in the federal budget.

Others to keep your eyes on include, who ran for the 2016 nomination and was nominated to serve as secretary of state in the second Trump administration; of South Carolina, who ran unsuccessfully for the 2024 nomination but remains very popular; and of Florida and former Secretary of State , who both mulled but decided against presidential runs this past cycle.

Also, not to be ignored – top Trump supporters of Florida and of New York, whom Trump picked to serve as U.S. ambassador to the U.N., and South Dakota who was named to head the Department of Homeland Security

Then there is ., the president-elect’s eldest son and MAGA warrior. However, the younger Trump is very close to Vance, which would likely prevent him from making any White House bid in the next cycle.

JOHANNESBURG – Key Republicans are already pressing the incoming Trump administration to kick South Africa out of lucrative trade arrangements, should the South African government not change its position on Russia, China, Iran and Israel.

Most at risk is South Africa’s duty-free exports to the U.S. of items such as cars and citrus fruit under AGOA – the African Growth and Opportunity Act, and with it the potential loss of tens of thousands of African jobs. South Africa is likely to be under intense scrutiny from the incoming administration.

A publication from the Center for African Studies at Howard University, in 2023, warned that a country wanting AGOA’s preferential trade agreements ‘cannot act in a manner that undermines U.S. national security or foreign policy interests’.

South Africa joins Russia’s military aircraft and naval vessels on exercises, allowing Pretoria’s naval bases to be used by the Kremlin and Russia’s sanctioned warships. Senior South African military officials have received training in Moscow. At the U.N., South Africa has refused to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

South Africa’s majority ANC party has met with terror group Hamas, and recently one branch of the ANC supported a local Muslim leader who reportedly shouted to a cheering crowd, ‘I am Hamas, Cape Town is Hamas, Viva Hamas!’ The government also issued a statement condemning the killing this year of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. The country’s foreign minister, Ronald Lamola, spoke out against the ‘assassination’ of this designated terrorist leader, saying ‘such acts of extrajudicial killings violate international law.’

South Africa has accused Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice.

South Africa’s biggest trading partner is China, with the two countries being founder members of the BRICS trade organization. South Africa has welcomed the inclusion now of Iran in BRICS. There have been accusations of deep links between Tehran and Pretoria.

‘Given the South African positions on the Russia-Ukraine and Mideast conflicts, South Africa is leaning away from American positions in a number of ways, most especially in its vigorous pursuit of Israel and its leaders in the international courts,’ J. Brooks Spector told Fox News Digital.

Spector, a former U.S. diplomat now based in Johannesburg, and deputy editor of the respected Daily Maverick, added that ‘continuing action and rhetoric by South Africa in its pursuit of Israel in international court efforts will, however, encourage Republicans in Congress (and probably in the administration as well) to strip South Africa of benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act, assuming the act is renewed next year.’

‘Such pursuits by the South African government may also lead to efforts to cut back on assistance to important efforts such as PEPFAR – the aid program that, together with the Global Fund and local organizations, has been crucial in the country’s successful efforts combatting HIV and AIDS.’

One such leading Republican, Sen. Jim Risch of Idaho, ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told Fox News Digital, ‘I remain concerned about South Africa’s efforts to cozy up to Russia, China and Iran, including Iran’s terror proxies, and the impact this has on U.S. national security – a vital element in AGOA eligibility. The country’s foreign policy actions will remain a focus of my oversight efforts.’

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Africa and member of the Senate Finance Committee, slammed South Africa in 2023, ‘South Africa has harbored sanctioned Russian ships, expanded relations with Iran and issued statements against Israel’s right to defend itself following Hamas’ recent terror attacks’

Both of these influential Republican leaders are expected to become more powerful when President-elect Trump takes office in January, with Scott’s office staff telling Fox News Digital, ‘Sen. Scott looks forward to working with the Trump administration to ensure that AGOA participants are not undermining our national security interests.’

South Africa’s moves are very definitely in an extremely bright spotlight in Washington. From inside the beltway, Richard Goldberg told Fox News Digital he’s worried particularly over potential links between South Africa and Iran. Goldberg is a former member of the National Security Council, and a senior adviser at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. He told Fox, ‘The first step is to build the case publicly, and give South Africa one last moment of choosing. We should declassify intelligence about South Africa’s deep relationship with Iran, and any other support or partnership with terrorist groups.’

Goldberg continued, ‘And then we need to use our full diplomatic and economic weight to force Pretoria to choose between the United States and our terrorist adversaries. AGOA should be one of several items on the policy menu.’

South Africa’s Department of International Relations didn’t respond to several requests for comment. But COSATU’s Parliamentary Co-ordinator, Matthew Parks did. COSATU is the Confederation of South African Trade Unions, historically aligned with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s ANC party. Parks is highly respected for his meaningful and dignified pursuance of workers’ rights. His members have much to lose, including potentially their jobs, if South Africa is pushed out of AGOA. But he appeared to be cautiously optimistic when talking to Fox News Digital, ‘We are confident that our relations with the U.S. will continue to grow, including through AGOA, simply because it is to the benefit of both our peoples.’

‘We’ve been extensively involved in engagements between South Africa and the U.S., on how to deepen our relations and toward the renewal of AGOA,’ Parks continued.  ‘We’ve engaged extensively with our colleagues in the U.S. labor movement, business community, Congress (both Republicans and Democrats), the State Department, Department of Labor, NSC and the White House.’

As Trump moves into the White House, nearby Ebrahim Rassool will be starting his second term as South African ambassador to the U.S. This month he talked to the Daily Maverick on South Africa’s challenges with the new administration, referring to South Africa’s attack on Israel at the ICJ. ‘We will stick by the case, but let us now trust our legal team,’ he said, ‘trust the evidence that we have placed in front of the judges of the ICJ, trust the judges of the ICJ to come to a sustainable, just solution – but that we need to put away the megaphone now.’

Rassool pointed out that the South African oranges exported to the U.S. under AGOA enabled Americans to drink orange juice all year round, when Florida and California oranges were out of season.

And Rassool added, ‘Why would you want to punish America with expensive cars when the BMWs coming from South Africa are going to be much cheaper than getting them from Germany or manufacturing your own?

‘Likewise, to point out that American cancer patients are receiving medical nuclear isotopes that come from South Africa.’

The expulsion of South Africa from AGOA would be ‘disastrous,’ Renai Moothilal wrote in the Business Day newspaper last year. Moothilal is CEO of the National Association of Automotive Component & Allied Manufacturers, and wrote, ‘It will be no surprise if some component manufacturers close their doors. U.S.-headquartered multinational manufacturers with plants here may exit the South African country if there are volume losses linked to our exclusion from AGOA, or other forms of political pressure are brought to bear.’

Observers note there are loud threats coming from President-elect Trump himself, including a claim that he will slap a 100% import tariff on countries like South Africa if, as members of BRICS, they adopt a new currency to rival the dollar. In the other corner of the ring, South African politicians are taking a more placatory and reserved tone. The Democratic Alliance or DA is South Africa’s main opposition party. But since May, they have also been members of the government of national unity, working in a sometimes noisy coalition with President Ramaphosa’s ANC.

Emma Powell, the DA’s national spokesperson for foreign affairs, told Fox News Digital that it’s likely the relationship between Pretoria and Washington ‘will become increasingly transactional, with greater emphasis placed on equitable reciprocity. This would contrast the Biden administration’s approach to beneficiation-based investment and development. There is also likely to be less tolerance for any action on the part of the South African government that may be perceived as undermining the national security interests of the United States.’

Powell added ‘the Trump administration is also likely to take a more cautious approach on AGOA eligibility.’

J. Brooks Spector told Fox News Digital he could take home one strong positive: ‘The incoming U.S. president’s often-expressed support for transactional foreign economic policies may possibly be an incentive for Africa’s nations – urged on by South Africa – to come together with initiatives offering trade and market concessions in Africa to America.’

The NBA and Christmas go together as well as any other festive paring this time of year.

This year, the league gifted fans five games sprinkled throughout the day, starting at noon ET with the San Antonio Spurs visiting the New York Knicks, who have played more games on Christmas Day (56) than any team in the NBA. That matchup was followed by the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Dallas Mavericks (2 p.m.), the Philadelphia 76ers taking on the Boston Celtics (5 p.m.), the Golden State Warriors hosting the Los Angeles Lakers (8 p.m.) and the night was capped by the Denver Nuggets traveling to face the Phoenix Suns (10:30 p.m.).

NBA games today

New York Knicks 117, San Antonio Spurs 114
Minnesota Timberwolves 105, Dallas Mavericks 99
Philadelphia 76ers 118, Boston Celtics 114
Los Angeles Lakers 115, Golden State Warriors 113
Phoenix Suns 110, Denver Nuggets 100

Nuggets vs. Suns highlights

Final: Suns 110, Nuggets 100

Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal led the way with 27 points apiece as the Phoenix Suns closed out Wednesday’s Christmas slate with a 110-100 win over the Denver Nuggets.

The Suns’ stars were joined in double figures by Tyus Jones (17 points) and Monte Morris, who had 11 off the bench.

Denver got 25 points from Nikola Jokic — but only three in the fourth quarter — 22 from Michael Porter Jr., 17 from Russell Westbrook off the bench and 13 from Jamal Murray, but the Nuggets found themselves playing catch-up nearly all night. Compounding their woes: forward Aaron Gordon exited with calf tightness.

End of third quarter: Suns 85, Nuggets 78

The Suns remain just a few steps ahead of the Nuggets.

Kevin Durant hasn’t hit a 3 yet (0-for-3), but KD has still poured in 23 points to lead all scorers. Joining him in double figures are Bradley Beal (19 points) and Tyus Jones (14).

Nikola Jokic remains Denver’s leading scorer with 22 points. Michael Porter Jr. has netted 18 and Russell Westbrook has scored 13 off the bench.

Halftime: Suns 58, Nuggets 56

After spending much of the second quarter trailing, the Nuggets briefly jumped ahead 54-53 on a Russell Westbrook layup with 1:58 to go. But Kevin Durant helped put the Suns back in the lead at halftime with mid-range jumpers — first answering Westbrook’s make with a 14-footer and then sinking an 11-footer with 38 seconds to go after Aaron Gordon had tied the game with a dunk.

Durant and Bradley Beal have 14 points apiece for the home side. Denver’s Nikola Jokic leads all scorers with 17. Michael Porter Jr. is the only other player in double figures, with 11 points.

End of first quarter: Suns 38, Nuggets 34

We’ll be honest — it will be hard for this game to match the Lakers-Warriors contest. But the stars have come to play in the desert, with Nikola Jokic scoring 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting in the opening frame and Kevin Durant responding with 10.

Final: Lakers 115, Warriors 113

76ers vs. Celtics highlights

Final: 76ers 118, Celtics 114

The Boston Celtics are green with envy after losing a close Christmas Day contest to the Philadelphia 76ers, 118-114.

The Celtics’ Jaylen Brown struggled early in the contest — he was held to two first-half points — but the Finals MVP came up clutch in the second half. He knocked down a fadeaway 3-pointer to bring the Celtics within two, 116-114, with 4.2 seconds remaining. Boston immediately fouled Joel Embiid, who converted both of his free throws to extend the Sixers’ lead back to 118-114 with 2.8 seconds remaining. The Celtics weren’t able to get off a final shot, however, after Derrick White stepped out of bounds. The Sixers dribbled out the clock.

Tyrese Maxey finished with a team-high 33 points and 12 assists, while Joel Embiid had 27 points and nine rebounds.

Jayson Tatum had 32 points and 15 rebounds. Brown added 23 points, seven rebounds and four assists in the loss.

End of 3Q: Celtics 82, 76ers 82

Things are all even after three quarters.

Joel Embiid is on double-double watch, leading the 76ers with 23 points and eight rebounds. Tyrese Maxey has 20 points and nine assists, one away from a double-double of his own.

Jayson Tatum has 21 points and 13 rebounds. After being held to only two points in the first half, Jaylen Brown exploded for 14 points in the third quarter, bringing his total to 16 points.

Halftime: 76ers 66, Celtics 58

The 76ers led by as many as 16 points in the first half and take a 66-58 lead over the Celtics into the locker room at halftime. Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey each have 18 points through the first half. Philadelphia is shooting 53.1% from the field collectively and is outscoring Boston 30-14 in the paint.

The Celtics are shooting 43.8% from the field. Jayson Tatum has 16 points and four rebounds, while Jaylen Brown has been held to two points, shooting 1-for-8 from the field and 0-for-1 from 3.

End of 1st quarter: 76ers 30, Celtics 25

Philadelphia is off and running behind 12 points by Tyrese Maxey. Joel Embiid has eight points and four rebounds. The 76ers are shooting 52% from the field.

Al Horford leads Boston with nine points, and Jayson Tatum has five points, four rebounds and two assists.

The Baltimore Ravens dominated the Houston Texans in the second game of a Netflix Christmas Day doubleheader, crushing the home team 31-2 at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The day was marked with an incredible performance from Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson, which saw the two-time (possibly three in a few weeks) MVP break the all-time quarterback rushing record. Of course, he couldn’t have done it alone. Valiant efforts from tight end Mark Andrews, running back Derrick Henry, and particularly the Baltimore defense helped the Ravens take the lead and never look back.

The Ravens (11-5) took sole possession of first-place in the AFC North with the victory. But Baltimore still needs to remain attentive. The Pittsburgh Steelers, who lost to the Kansas City Chiefs earlier in the day, hold the tiebreaker over the Ravens should the two teams end up tied after next week. The Ravens will play the Cleveland Browns in Week 18.

The Texans (9-7) may have already wrapped up the AFC South, but it appears they will be locked into the No. 4 seed. And based on how they played today, they might have difficulty escaping the first round. The Texans’ last game is set for Sunday, January 5, against the Tennessee Titans.

Here’s everything that went down from the record-breaking Christmas Day matchup between the Texans and Ravens below.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Ravens-Texans game highlights

FINAL: Ravens 31, Texans 2

This game was all Ravens from the get-go. Every time the Texans tried to get back into the game by going for it on fourth down or looking for a deep shot, it backfired, enabling the Ravens to pull away even further.

This was the kind of performance that puts the rest of the league on notice. Surely, no one wants to face Baltimore in the playoffs.

Lamar done for the day

With the Ravens leading 31-2, Lamar Jackson has been removed from the game, with backup Josh Johnson taking over. Even with Johnson under center, the Ravens’ offense didn’t look terrible, picking up a few first downs.

It just has not been Houston’s day.

Lamar Jackson breaks Michael Vick’s rushing record

It took Lamar Jackson less than seven years to do what Michael Vick did over the course of his 13-year career.

Coming into today’s game, Jackson needed 87 rushing yards to surpass Vick. He reached that mark in the third quarter on a 6-yard carry, but even more impressive is the fact that he was able to reach 87 rushing yards on just four carries.

Jackson was granted the game ball from his final carry. The ball wore a piece of tape over it that read ‘8: Most rush yards by a QB in NFL hist.’ Although that’s not the most glamorous memoir for such an achievement, Jackson will surely appreciate getting to keep that ball.

Ravens not letting off the gas

Greg Olsen said it best. Following another touchdown for Baltimore, the esteemed former tight end said ‘I’m not sure what the Texans are doing.’ There have never been truer words said.

Mark Andrews recorded a one-yard touchdown reception to put the Ravens up 31-2 with just over five minutes to go in the third quarter.

But wait! It gets worse!

Less than a minute after the interception, Lamar Jackson scored a touchdown on a 48-yard keeper. It’s like the Texans never even had the ball to start the half.

Texans offensive woes carry into second half

Any Houston fans hoping Stroud and company could find some magic coming out of the locker room had their dreams dashed just a minute into the third quarter as Stroud found the arms of Ravens’ safety Kyle Hamilton, giving the Ravens the ball at their own 39-yard line.

Beyonce slays stellar Texas-themed halftime show

The halftime show marked the first time the Grammy-winning singer performed songs from her eighth studio album, ‘Cowboy Carter.’ Fans attending the game were given light-up bracelets, which cemented the event as the ‘Beyoncé Bowl.’

The performance was yet another way Beyoncé used her platform to shine a light on emerging Black artists, specifically in country music. It’s the biggest stage yet she’s used to spotlight her collaborators.’ – Caché McClay

Beyonce’s collaborators included artists like Shaboozey and Post Malone, but the brightest star shined for Beyonce’s 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy. Blue Ivy joined her mom on stage, dancing to several of her mother’s songs.

The end of the second quarter was arguably scarier for Texans’ fans than the rest of the first half. Despite their abysmal play, the most nerve-racking thing for Houston was a late injury to C.J. Stroud that forced backup Davis Mills into the game. Luckily, Stroud returned soon after, but with only 11 seconds to play.

We don’t know the extent of Stroud’s injury just yet, but the fact he was able to return to the field is obviously a great sign. It’s 17-2 heading into the second half. The Texans will get the ball first.

Ravens cannot be stopped

The Lamar Jackson to Mark Andrews connection hasn’t been as potent as in years past, but he can still come up big for this Baltimore offense. After Houston pinned the Ravens at the 1-yard line, the Ravens were still able to score a touchdown, thanks to a 67-yard reception by Andrews.

That reception was followed up with a ten-yard score by Andrews’ fellow tight end Isaiah Likely, and the Ravens have regained their two-possession lead. It’s 17-2 Ravens with 1:51 left in the first half.

Houston’s 4th down try doesn’t pan out

Following the safety, the Texans put together their best drive of the day, even if much of the yardage came on a pass interference penalty.

The Texans reached the Ravens’ 4-yard line but could not punch the ball in. After an incomplete pass on 3rd & goal, head coach DeMeco Ryans opted to keep kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn on the sidelines. Stroud’s swing pass to Joe Mixon on the right looked good at the start, but the former Bengal was forced out of bounds at the 1-yard line.

Hey, perhaps another safety is in the cards.

Texans’ defense gets them on the board first

If the offense can’t get it done, it has to be the guys on the other side of the ball. With the Ravens pinned deep in their own territory, rookie cornerback Kamari Lassiter was able to break through the line of scrimmage after a handoff to Derrick Henry.

Henry, trying to avoid the first tackler, backtracked into the end zone, where Lassiter was able to bring him down for a safety. With 10 minutes to go in the first half, it’s 10-2, Ravens and the Texans are getting the ball.

Texans’ offense looks lost

It’s been a day to forget so far for C.J. Stroud and the Texans’ offense. The team has not advanced past midfield and punted on all three drives. While they have been able to get a few first downs, they’ve been minimal gains that don’t go any further. If the Texans want any hope of winning this game, the Texans’ offense will need to pick things up quickly.

Texans cannot answer back

The Texans looked to have something going after moving near midfield quickly thanks to a big pass and catch from C.J. Stroud to Nico Collins. The Texans couldn’t gain another inch after that, with Stroud overthrowing both Collins and tight end Dalton Schultz on back-to-back plays, forcing another punt.

To add insult to injury, the Texans were charged with a penalty on the punt, giving Baltimore extra yardage before their drive even started.

Ravens take 10-0 lead

Following an unimpressive drive from the Houston Texans, Derrick Henry wasted no time putting his team back in Texans’ territory. From there, the team was just a few yards away from an easy Justin Tucker field goal and a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

Ravens set the tone early

It didn’t take long for the Baltimore Ravens to make their mark on this game. Their opening drive took less than five minutes as Derrick Henry capped it off with a 2-yard touchdown run, set up by a 27-yard reception from Zay Flowers.

Houston could not stop anything Baltimore tried, which could be a very bad sign for the Texans moving forward.

What time is Beyoncé’s halftime show?

Start time: 5:45 p.m. ET (roughly)

There isn’t a set start time for Beyoncé’s halftime performance because, naturally, it will depend on the length of the first half of the Texans vs. Ravens game.

The Texans game is scheduled to kick off at 4:30 p.m. ET. If it starts on time as expected, that should allow halftime to begin between 5:45 and 6 p.m. ET.

With that in mind, those who want to guarantee that they will see Beyoncé’s show as it happens should tune into the program at 5:45 p.m. ET, just in case the first half is fast-moving.

Where is Texans vs. Ravens?

The Christmas Day matchup between the Texans and Ravens is taking place in Houston at NRG Stadium.

When was the first NFL Christmas game?

For years, the NFL season simply did not run long enough to reach the holiday. Until the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the regular season ended in mid-December with the championship game two weeks later. The league would move the game to Dec. 26 if there was a conflict with the holiday.

The first NFL Christmas game happened in the 1971-72 playoffs with the Minnesota Vikings hosting the Dallas Cowboys and the Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Miami Dolphins. Both road teams won that day with the Cowboys earning a 20-12 win en route to a Super Bowl win and Miami gutting out a 27-24 double-overtime victory.

Beyoncé has fun with Netflix dig before Christmas halftime show

Beyonce, who will perform during the halftime show of the Ravens-Texans game, took to social media to promote her upcoming performance with a clip, humorously poking fun at the streaming giant that recently experienced technical issues during the Logan Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight.

AFC South Division standings

The Texans have won the AFC South title and the Colts are the only team alive in the AFC playoff hunt.

Texans (9-6)
Colts (7-8)
Jaguars (3-12)
Titans (3-12)

AFC North Division standings

The AFC North title is still undecided. Entering Week 17, the Steelers hold the tiebreaker over the Ravens with a better win percentage against AFC opponents, but since the Steelers lost earlier against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Ravens have jumped them in the standings for the time being.

Ravens (10-5)
Steelers (10-6)
Bengals (7-8)
Browns (3-12)

What happened in the first Christmas game?

Ravens-Texans is not the first NFL game of the day. That ended a half an hour ago, when the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-10.

During the game, Travis Kelce became the all-time touchdown receptions leader for the Kansas City Chiefs with his 77th score of his career, surpassing Tony Gonzalez. He also recorded his 1,000th career catch during the win.

The Chiefs secured the No. 1 seed in the AFC with the victory as well.

Beyoncé lit up NRG Stadium, putting on a stellar halftime performance during the Baltimore vs. Houston game on Christmas Day.

It’s the biggest stage yet she’s used to spotlight her collaborators.

Here are five groundbreaking moments from the unforgettable show on Wednesday.

All-white grand entrance on horseback

The megastar made a grand entrance in true Beyoncé fashion, riding in on horseback in a white cowboy hat and duster. She serenaded the crowd with her single ’16 Carriages’ as she made her way underneath the stadium to the field.

‘My House’ lights up the stadium

Shortly after entering the field, Beyoncé was joined by a marching band, singing “Ya Ya” as she revelaed a glittery bodysuit and chaps.

During the performance, she also performed her 2023 song ‘My House’ as fans used signs to display ‘My House’ in the stands.

Blue Ivy performs alongside her mom

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s 12-year-old daughter Blue Ivy Carter was alongside her mom during the big halftime show. Blue showed off her moves as she danced to several songs throughout the performance.

At one point, Blue danced hand-in-hand with her mom, making for an unforgettable moment.

Shaboozey, Post Malone and more join Beyoncé

The Grammy-winning singer was sure to bring out artists featured on her eighth studio album. She was first joined by the four women who sing alongside her on ‘Blackbiird.’

Tiera Kennedy, Brittney Spencer, Tanner Adell and Reyna Roberts sang the Beatles cover in unison.

Shaboozey also made an appearance, singing his verse on ‘Sweet Honey Buckin” with Beyoncé.

Then crossover superstar Post Malone joined Beyoncé as they performed their song ‘Levii’s Jeans’ with a denim-covered truck as the backdrop.

Beyoncé ascends to the air for a grand finale

Beyoncé ended her stellar performance with a bang. She ascended into the air, singing her chart-topping tune ‘Texas Hold ‘Em,’ accompanied with a sign that read ‘bang.’

As fans know, Queen Bey announced her halftime gig last month, and fans instantly drove up game day ticket sales. Beyoncé teased the show as ‘A Cowboy Carter Christmas.’

Of course, Beyoncé first announced the album during a surprise Super Bowl commercial in February when she released singles ’16 Carriages’ and ‘Texas Hold ‘Em.’ The songs instantly took the internet by storm, as did the album once it was released. The 27-track project has also been huge catalyst for the recent spotlight on Black country artists and the genre’s roots.

Prior to sharing the album with the rest of the world, Beyoncé got candid about creating the five-year project and alluded to her 2016 performance at the CMA Awards.

In a post on Instagram, she wrote: ‘This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive.’

‘It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history,’ she wrote. ‘The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me. act ii is a result of challenging myself and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.’
