Now that Donald Trump has secured a historic victory, returning to the White House for another term in January, assorted pundits are pontificating that the president-elect will give away the store to Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, especially when it comes to resolving the almost three-year Russia-Ukraine conflict.

I’m here to tell you that President-elect Trump is a gift to Ukraine and a nightmare for Putin.

Trump is the first U.S. president who has been able to outsmart the Russian dictator after the latter had fooled four U.S. presidents. Yes, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama and, of course, President Biden. All fell for the ‘former’ KGB operative’s chicanery, having gullibly trusted Putin that Russia could be America’s friend.

George W. Bush famously proclaimed that he ‘looked the man [Putin] in the eye.’ Bush described Putin, the ‘former’ KGB operative, as ‘consistent, transparent, honest, and an easy man to discuss our opportunities and problems with,’ according to the White House archives.

Friendship? Common values? Seriously? The FBI had just arrested its own agent, Robert Hanssen, a 20-year spy for the KGB, in February 2001. The most damaging spy in modern history, Hanssen sold some of the most sensitive U.S. secrets to the Russians, including our nuclear secrets, the existence of a secret American-built tunnel under the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C., and the identities of Soviets who spied for America.

Evidently, Bush and his advisers weren’t deterred by the fact that Putin’s first Foreign Policy Concept pronounced America’s ‘economic and power dominance’ as a threat to Russia’s national interests and his first military doctrine alluded to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) being a top threat to Russia’s security. Both were approved by Putin in 2000.

Even the terrifying revelation made by the House Armed Services Committee in October 1999 about Russia’s ‘sabotage plans’ against the United States failed to prevent the spell that Putin projected on Bush. Transcripts of congressional testimonies reveal that the committee had in its possession ‘dramatic evidence’ of the KGB’s positioning on NATO territory and possibly United States territory caches of high explosives and arms intended for sabotage operations in the event of war.

Bush wasn’t the first U.S. president played by Putin. Vlad began his charm offensive targeting U.S. presidents for manipulation with Bill Clinton. Clinton called Putin on Mar 27, 2000, the day after the Russian elections, to congratulate him on his victory. Declassified White House records reveal a very chummy phone call in which the leaders of former Cold War archenemies called each other by their first names, Vladimir and Bill.

Clinton expressed eagerness to build relations with his Russian counterpart and ‘the relationship between the U.S. and Russia.’

‘We can accomplish a lot together,’ he told Putin. And Vladimir responded in kind, assuring Bill that his trust wasn’t misplaced.

‘It is clear to the whole world that I am a person you can work with,’ Putin said, and he thanked Clinton for his comments about the Russian dictator’s ‘modest personality.’

‘The statement that you made about my modest personality was not unacknowledged here … this statement by the U.S. president was not unnoticed by people in Russia and throughout the world.’

Declassified transcripts of 500 pages of telephone conversations between Britain’s Tony Blair and former President Clinton that occurred between 1997 and December 2000 reveal that ‘Slick Willie’ was also under Vlad’s spell. Clinton considered Putin ‘smart and thoughtful,’ someone with ‘enormous potential.’

‘I think [Putin] is a guy with a lot of ability and ambitions for the Russians. His intentions are generally very honorable and straightforward, but he just hasn’t made up his mind yet,’ Clinton told Blair.

Barack Obama was next. He famously promised Putin’s proxy, then-President Dmitry Medvedev, ‘more flexibility’ in American policy toward Russia, unaware that his conversation was captured by a microphone. In 2013, Putin dissuaded Obama from following through on his earlier warning that Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, crossed the ‘red line’ when he targeted his own citizens with a chemical strike. Another of Putin’s proxies, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, convinced his counterpart, John Kerry, that there was no need for a punishing strike because Russia would remove the chemical weapons arsenal from Syria. Putin’s maneuver allowed Obama to save face while claiming a diplomatic victory.

Four years later, however, Assad was still gassing his people. That is until on April 7, 2017, when President Trump enforced Obama’s 2012 ‘red line.’ Authorized by Trump, the U.S. military launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Shayrat Airbase in Homs, the source of a sarin gas attack that killed more than 80 Syrians on April 4, 2017.

When he characterized his relationship with Obama as ‘working and personal’ marked by ‘growing trust,’ what Putin really meant was that he had outsmarted yet another U.S. leader and that his KGB tactics were working well, for Russia that is. After all, it was on Obama’s watch that Russia invaded Crimea and made it part of Russia in 2014. And it was on Biden’s watch that Putin invaded Ukraine in 2022 after Biden green-lighted this action with his ‘minor incursion’ comment.

Putin managed to trick four presidents to begin their terms with the pursuit of a naive Russia ‘reset’ policy doomed to failure from the very start.

How does the Russian master manipulator do it?

Putin prides himself on his ability to ‘work and communicate with people’ and to ‘work with information.’ Working with information means learning everything about your target. Working with people means communicating with your target in a way that appeals to his vanity. Pushing your target’s buttons and exploiting his vulnerabilities is classic intelligence tradecraft. Putin honed these skills as a KGB operative, recruiting spies in Eastern Germany who were willing to betray their country in service to Russia.

When his close friend asked him what his job as a KGB officer entailed, Putin responded that he was a ‘specialist in communicating with people,’ which can also be translated as ‘a specialist in human relations.’ During a press conference in 2001, Putin explained that working with people entails the ability to communicate with a wide range of individuals, from journalists and scientists to politicians and rank-and-file citizens: ‘It is important to establish a dialogue and activate the best in your partner. You want to achieve results; you must respect your partner, acknowledge that he is better than you in some way. You must make him your ally … make him feel that there is something that unites you, that you have a common cause.’

Even the American media was so beguiled by the KGB operative in the Kremlin that Putin was chosen as ‘Person of the Year’ by Time magazine in 2007 and four times in a row from 2013 to 2016 by Forbes magazine as the ‘World’s Most Powerful Individual.’

Putin’s trickery didn’t work with former President Trump, however.

You see, Trump invented the game. He loves talking with people and understands the value of communicating, even with foreign dictators. Last month, Trump angered the commentariat when he told Bloomberg editor-in-chief John Micklethwait that talking with Putin is a ‘smart thing.’

Replying to Micklethwait’s question about whether he had continued contact with Putin after leaving the White House in 2021, Trump said, ‘But I will tell you that, if I did it, it’s a smart thing. If I’m friendly with people, if I have a relationship with people, that’s a good thing, not a bad thing.’

A talented businessman with an authentic communication style and natural ability to connect with people, Trump is well-positioned to outfox Putin. Out-negotiating and outsmarting his counterpart comes with the territory for a successful entrepreneur. To negotiate a better deal, you have to be super attuned to your interlocutor’s personality, allowing you to accurately assess his strengths and weaknesses. Trump has this innate ability to size up people and learn quickly what makes them tick. Even former Democrat lawmaker Claire McCaskill admitted on Wednesday that President-elect Trump knows our country ‘better than we do.’

This talent has served Trump well in dealing with Putin. Realizing that the Russian strongman responds well to respect, Trump doesn’t disparage Putin, unlike Biden, Harris and other Western politicians. And what is the point? Putin is not afraid of words. He is afraid of actions. So, Trump gave the Russian spymaster action.

Having understood Putin’s anti-U.S. strategy, Trump has taken several specific steps to counter Russia’s war-fighting doctrine and weaken its combat potential. Realizing that energy is the main source of Russia’s defense economics fueling Putin’s war machine, Trump sanctioned the Nord Stream 2 pipeline in December 2019, angering Putin.

The same month, Trump founded America’s first entirely new armed service since 1947, the U.S. Space Force. This action sought to mitigate Russia’s space warfare doctrine. This doctrine called for Russia’s space troops, which Putin stood up in 2001, to attack U.S. satellites on which we depend for every aspect of war-fighting and in our civilian life.

In 2018, as part of the modernization of the U.S. nuclear arsenal, Trump ordered the development of a low-yield, nuclear-armed, sea-launched cruise missile. This was a direct counter to Putin’s ‘escalate-to-de-escalate’ atomic strategy, which seeks to detonate a low-yield tactical nuclear warhead in the theater of combat operations, such as in Ukraine, to deter the U.S. from intervening.

Foolishly, the Biden-Harris administration canceled Trump’s program. Biden’s cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline in 2021 helped fuel Putin’s war machine by boosting Russia’s oil revenues as energy supply fell after the U.S. oil production capacity dropped by more than 800,000 barrels. In fact, the United States was importing nearly 600,000 barrels of oil a day from Russia, a gap that Keystone could have made up for.

There’s a reason why Putin didn’t invade anyone on Trump’s watch and is now terrified of the next Trump presidency. Vlad knows that ‘Teflon Don’ is onto him and can beat him at his own game.

President-elect Donald Trump congratulated Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., after the lawmaker won election to serve as the next Senate Republican leader.

Republicans won the majority in the House and Senate during the 2024 elections.

‘Congratulations to Senator John Thune, the Newly Elected Senate Majority Leader. He moves quickly, and will do an outstanding job,’ Trump said in a post on Truth Social.

GOP Sens. Rick Scott of Florida and John Cornyn of Texas had also been vying for the role.

‘While it isn’t the result we hoped for, I will do everything possible to make sure John Thune is successful in accomplishing President Trump’s agenda,’ Scott said in a statement.

‘We are united and prepared to enact President Trump’s agenda on day one, and I look forward to working alongside my colleagues to take advantage of the opportunities we will have next year to confirm nominees, address our national debt, extend the Trump tax cuts, and reverse the Biden-Harris administration’s disastrous border policies,’ Cornyn said in a statement.

Thune will succeed current Senate Republican Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., next year. McConnell, who has long occupied the post, did not seek another term in the role.

Trump noted that he looks forward to working with Thune and the other senators selected for various Senate Republican leadership roles.

‘I look forward to working with him, and Senators John Barrasso (Senate Majority Whip), Tom Cotton (Senate Republican Conference Chairman), Shelley Moore Capito (Senate Republican Policy Committee Chairman), James Lankford (Republican Conference Vice Chairman), and Tim Scott (National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman) to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!’ he said in the post.

Thune indicated during remarks on Wednesday that Republican senators will work with House colleagues to implement Trump’s agenda.

Can an opposite-field fly ball struck 367 feet be worth hundreds of millions of dollars in sentiment?

Perhaps it won’t mean anything, and perhaps it did not alter his fate as a New York Met. Yet when Pete Alonso’s go-ahead three-run homer catapulted the Mets from wild-card losers all the way to Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, it became that much difficult to separate reality from narrative.

Alonso’s one-out, ninth-inning shot against Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams in the decisive Game 3 of their NL wild-card series ensured that owner Steve Cohen’s club wasn’t just a cute second-half story that met a quick October end.

No, in upsetting the division champion Philadelphia Phillies in the subsequent NL Division Series and fighting the Dodgers for one more game than the Yankees ultimately did in the World Series, the Mets outkicked their expectations.

And went on the kind of run that galvanized the fan base, solidified Alonso’s standing among them and probably buttressed the club’s franchise value.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

Is all that enough to ensure a massive commitment to retain the Polar Bear?

A look at the top five potential landing spots for the free agent who celebrates his 30th birthday next month:

New York Mets

On one hand, you look at Alonso’s age and rising strikeout rate and figure that the nine-figure contract needed to retain him may not be worth it.

On the other, there’s so much good already in the bank: A whopping 226 career home runs, just 26 away from tying Darryl Strawberry atop the franchise leaderboard. Four All-Star appearances and two Home Run Derby championships. A career adjusted OPS of 134, and three seasons with at least 40 home runs.

That’s before you even get to the vibes, as Alonso is a strident and vocal supporter of the club, introduced the playoff pumpkin to last month’s merry October ride and ingrained himself within the fan community from his rookie season in 2019.

That year, the Mets did right by him and started Alonso on Opening Day; he rewarded them with 53 home runs and a 147 adjusted OPS. As a result, he’s now on the free agent market and not having to wait one more year.

Can this seemingly cordial relationship continue? Or will Cohen get tapped out by the Juan Soto pursuit, and talked down by new club president David Stearns, who might more pragmatically view Alonso’s eventual decline years?

It will make for compelling wintertime drama.

New York Yankees

And therein lies the twisting of the knife: Alonso departing Queens for the Bronx, perhaps nudging the Yankees to an elusive World Series championship, eventually papering over his time as a Met and (egad!) perhaps entering Cooperstown with a different interlocking NY on his cap.

There is a gaping hole at first base for the Yankees, one they’d rather not let fading DJ LeMahieu plug, to say the least. Certainly, mid-range models are available on the market, but after one of the Yankees’ glitziest teams in recent memory packed the Stadium and reached the World Series, will the fan base rally around a Christian Walker or Carlos Santana acquisition?

Oddly enough, the Yankees and Mets are believed to be positioned before the same four doors, in a modified game of Let’s Make A Deal: Sign Alonso. Sign Soto. Sign both Soto and Alonso. Sign neither.

It certainly seems like the Yankees can’t afford that final scenario, either in production or in panache. At the same time, losing Soto and adding Alonso would make the middle of the lineup far too right-handed, what with sluggers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton already in the mix.

Go big or go home? That’s a question managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner will have to ponder.

Seattle Mariners

What better way to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the Richie Sexson era in Seattle than reeling in a hulking, power-hitting right-handed hitter entering his age-30 season?

OK, so maybe that’s not the best way to sell this.

Yet the similarities are pretty striking: Pitching-rich, hitting-weak team aims to balance things out by purchasing power on the free agent market. And Sexson did hit 39 home runs in 2004, the first year of his four-year, $50 million contract.

Seattle, though, only improved from 63 to 69 wins in 2005, Sexson struck out a major league high 167 times and by the fourth year of his deal was dumped on the Yankees.

Now, these Mariners: While they’ve invested well in pitching, their pop-gun offense once again prevented them from winning a division title. Club president Jerry Dipoto will be dogged by his “54%” comments until the Mariners, you know, end up winning more than 54% of their games.

Many a right-handed hitter has been vexed by Safeco Field/T-Mobile Park. Yet the Polar Bear has the kind of pop that no yard can truly hold. And a club that won 85 games despite finishing in the bottom third in runs scored and OPS can certainly use a hitter with a pulse.

Cincinnati Reds

You asked for “good fits,” not likely fits, right?

It’s been more than a decade since the Castellini family bestowed a nine-figure extension on franchise icon Joey Votto and followed that up with a near-$100 million deal for pitcher Homer Bailey. Since then, you’d think the Reds were as bereft as a Kroger aisle before a hurricane.

So no, we don’t expect Cincinnati to make a major splash in this free agent pool. Yet the conditions are there.

New manager Terry Francona did not come out of retirement to take over Cleveland South and oversee a methodical build. The club has virtually no money on its books past this year – with only pitcher Hunter Greene signed to a modest deal past 2026.

And a young position-player core will remain cost-controlled for the next several years. Little reason why $30 million annually for Alonso’s power bat can’t be tucked away within a foundation that includes infielders Matt McLain, Noelvi Marte and the transcendent Elly De La Cruz, the latter not even arbitration-eligible until 2027.

Just imagine Alonso’s pop within Great American Ball Park, still the friendliest joint in which to hit home runs. You’d like to think the Reds have.

Tampa Bay Rays

We’d prefer that the Rays crack the $50 million mark in free agent bidding before dignifying them with an inclusion on a list like this. Yet perhaps the conditions are aligning just a little.

For as famously frugal as the Rays are – their largest free agent deal was three years, $40 million for Zach Eflin, and they promptly traded him in year two – they stuck their nose in the Freddie Freeman bidding when Atlanta turned him loose three winters ago. They supposedly reached out to talk Juan Soto this month.

And the green flags keep lining up for a new stadium that figures to open in St. Petersburg in 2028. Who better than a hometown star to get the home folks excited?

OK, so Alonso hails from just over the Sunshine Skyway in Tampa. He won’t get his preferred wish that a new Rays ballpark go up near Armature Works on that side of the Bay. Yet things could just as easily be popping off in Pinellas County should the seal be broken on the new ballpark by the pride of Plant High School.

So maybe owner Stuart Sternberg will always be as cheap and “efficient” as his front office allows. But it’s intriguing to consider bringing a real, live St. Pete back home.

Mike Tyson once worked under the tutelage of a man who wore suits and the look of a sage.

That was Cus D’Amato, the famed trainer who more than 40 years ago molded Tyson into the fighter who at age 20 became the youngest world heavyweight champion.

The job of preparing Tyson to step back into the ring at 58 and fight Jake Paul on Friday rests with Rafael Cordeiro and Billy White. They lack D’Amato’s boxing pedigree. But with the legendary trainer long since deceased, Cordeiro and White have earned Tyson’s trust.

White trained under D’Amato starting in the 1970s. Cordeiro is a celebrated trainer in the world of mixed martial arts.

“They work like a dream team together,’’ Tyson told USA TODAY Sports.

Cordeiro, 51, and White, 64, prepared Tyson for his exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020. The eight-round bout, scored by celebrity judges, ended in a split draw. And when the Tyson-Paul fight was announced in March, the pair of trainers soon resumed their work.

Cordeiro holds the mitts – and holds on to dear life – when Tyson unleashes ferocious punches. He also confers with White, who stands outside the ring and offers the instruction he learned from D’Amato.

“Totally different form of training,’’ Tyson said when asked how his current trainers compare to D’Amato, “but still great.’’

Mike Tyson leans on Cus D’Amato disciples

In Catskill, New York, inside a boxing gym that sat on top of the police department, D’Amato taught more than boxing. He imparted a philosophy that wedded brains and brawn and included an affirmation coined by Frenchman Emile Coue.

Every day in every way I’m getting better and better.

As D’Amato disciples, Tyson and White were trained in the peek-a-boo fighting style that Tyson made famous, the use of speed and leverage and the development of the mind.

“Billy gives Mike this sense of security and familiarity through the old days and to Cus,’’ said Brad Rowe, who served as Tyson’s strength and conditioning coach when Tyson was training for his exhibition with Jones. “So even though Billy might not be in most people’s eyes this revered trainer, it’s someone that Mike fully trusts, fully opens up to. And that’s just as important as anything else.’’

Tyson and White have blended the old school and new school. For example, the Willy Bag – a D’Amato invention that aids boxers learning punching combinations – is mounted in Tyson’s sleek gym in the Las Vegas area.

White is a living reminder of everything else from the gym in Catskill.

What Mike Tyson gets from Rafael Cordeiro

The Harvard of boxing schools, Cordeiro has said of the style D’Amato taught. The Brazilian coach best known for teaching striking has become a student.

The lessons are taught by Tyson and White.

“I know when we were working together, (Cordeiro) immersed himself in learning about boxing a little more deeply than his understanding had been,’’ Rowe said.

Tyson and Cordeiro met in 2020 through Robert Hickman, then overseeing Tyson’s cannabis business interests and well connected in MMA. At the time, Tyson was boxing in Hickman’s garage, according to Hickman.

“I said, ‘Why don’t we have Rafael come down and hang out with you and play around?’ ” Hickman told USA TODAY Sports. “And so that’s the earliest footage I got. I put together a little piece (of video) and put it out on social and it blew up.’’

What lasted longer than the video is the relationship between Tyson and Cordeiro, who is armed with a contagious smile and almost unshakable optimism.

Cordeiro brings more than good energy.

A former fighter, he has trained at least 10 former MMA champions, including Anderson Silva and Cris Cyborg.

The world’s greatest trainer, White has called Cordeiro.

Mike Tyson brings in new support

The new additions to Team Tyson are Andy Velcich, a body builder and personal trainer, and Tony Brady, a strength and conditioning coach.

Velcich, 34, operates an electrical stimulation machine that’s hooked up to Tyson during some of the boxer’s workouts. It was a role once occupied by Rowe, who parted ways with Tyson after the Jones exhibition.

Brady is well known in boxing circles. His clients include Mario Barrios, who on Friday will be fighting on the Tyson-Paul card for the WBC interim world welterweight title. Other boxers with whom Brady has worked are Andre Ward, a former world champion in the super middleweight and light heavyweight divisions; Caleb Plant, a former IBF super middleweight champion; and Amir Khan, a former light-welterweight world champion.

Videos of Tyson’s training show Velcich and Brady working in tandem, not unlike what White and Cordeiro do.

Tommy Fury did more than hand Jake Paul his first loss on Feb. 26, 2023.

He prompted Paul to overhaul his core team, in which the YouTuber-turned-boxer has put his faith as he heads into his fight with Mike Tyson on Friday at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

From the renowned Kronk Gym in Detroit, Paul brought in Theotrice (Third) Chambers as his new head coach. He was paired with J’Leon Love, another product of Kronk. Later, in came Larry Wade, a strength and conditioning coach who started in the world of track and field.

In those men Paul has placed his trust.

“And on Friday people are going to see me outbox the person who’s been doing it their whole life because of my team,’’ Paul said, referring to Tyson on Tuesday during open workouts. “Everyone that’s putting the work with me, coach Third, coach J (Love), coach Larry, we’re unstoppable force.’’

Indeed, since Paul’s loss to Fury by unanimous decision, he has won four straight bouts, three by knockout.

Jake Paul pulls stunt with coach

Chambers is seen fake-slapping Paul in the boxer’s locker room in what looked like a WWE moment. The caption posted on the Theo Third Chambers PARODY account on X: “Me if Jake doesn’t get the KO tonight.’’

Not only did Paul get the KO, he knocked Perry down three times before finishing him off by TKO in the sixth round.

It was the perfect combination of zany YouTuber and ascending boxer.

The pot-bellied Chambers, in his early 50s, stands 5-4 and is an unassuming former pro boxer. He went 10-3 with eight knockouts between 1990 and 1993 and has said his career ended because he suffered a detached retina.

He also said he spent time working in real estate before heading back to his boxing home, the Kronk Gym, and embarking on a career as a trainer.

The key to his joining Paul’s camp was a recommendation from Love, the longest-tenured member of Team Paul. The Kronk Gym products have worked to elevate Paul to the next level. So far, so good.

Jake Paul depends on two more in camp

Before Paul’s second pro fight, which was on the undercard of Tyson’s exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020, he took steps to be prepared. That included sparring against quality fighters such as Love, 37, who at the time was a super middleweight with a record of 24-3-1.

After Paul knocked out retired NBA player Nate Robinson in brutal fashion on the Tyson-Jones undercard, Love hailed the YouTuber’s boxing prowess.

‘He can make it,’ Love told TMZ at the time. ‘He already has made it because he has the push of the fans. The skill set is there.’

With Paul facing a legion of doubters, Love fought once more and since has dedicated himself to Paul’s rise.

While Love and Chambers have developed Paul’s boxing technique, Wade has taken Paul onto the track as part of the strength and conditioning routine. The payoff could be increased stamina, providing a potential advantage over the 58-year-old Tyson.

Although Wade, 49, started his career working with sprinters, he’s excelled in the world of boxing. His clients include Shawn Porter, a two-time world welterweight champion; Caleb Plant, a former IBF super middleweight champion; and Badou Jack, a former world cruiserweight and super middleweight champion.

Aaron Rodgers was supposed to pilot the Jets to a Super Bowl.

Instead, the captain and his crew never left the terminal. The dark skies that have hung over the organization since winning Super Bowl 3 in 1969 don’t seem to be going anywhere, anytime soon. Rodgers was supposed to be the savior before riding off into the sunset. It worked for Peyton Manning. It worked for Tom Brady. It doesn’t look like it’ll work for Rodgers and the Jets.

A franchise that often feels cursed, the Jets have experienced just five winning seasons since Rodgers entered the league 20 years ago. In the midst of what’s shaping up to be a ninth consecutive losing season, the questions are no longer about how far ‘Gang Green’ will go, but rather how low they can go?

With Father Time coming for Rodgers, it’s a mystery how much longer he’ll play. But while the Jets spiral, it appears that this marriage between quarterback and team is set to last at least another year.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Will Aaron Rodgers retire?

Rodgers plans to play in 2025, he told reporters on Wednesday.

‘I think so, yeah,’ he said when asked if he plans to play next season.

The Jets were largely expected to be a playoff team in 2024 and potential Super Bowl contenders. Through 10 weeks, they are closer to ending up with the No. 1 overall draft pick. Unless a miracle happens, the only way the Jets end up at the Super Bowl in New Orleans is if they buy a ticket.

Rodgers’ struggles have played a big role in that, but the team as a whole has underperformed. ‘Gang Green’ has been poorly coached, which led to the firing of Robert Saleh. A flawed roster has also been exposed. The Jets went all-in on veteran talent like Rodgers and Tyron Smith, while trying to extract value out of players returning from injury, like Mike Williams. New York ended up trading for Davante Adams following a Week 6 loss to the Bills, so it doesn’t fall entirely on the staff or roster construction.

Ultimately, if Rodgers was playing like the quarterback that has tormented defenses since 2008, no one would be having this discussion.

There’s no shame in saying the 40-year-old quarterback can’t carry a team like he used to. The Achilles injury he suffered in 2023 has zapped Rodgers of nearly all mobility, making the Jets look like they’re running a prehistoric offense. In an NFL era that places a ton of emphasis on a quarterback’s athletic ability, the Jets are an outlier.

While poor play and bad results don’t seem to be discouraging the future Hall of Fame quarterback from playing next season, plans often change. Rodgers took a chance on a broken organization that owns the longest playoff drought in the NFL. The book isn’t completely closed yet, but that is likely too much to overcome in the end.

How old is Aaron Rodgers?

Aaron Rodgers is 40 years old and is set to turn 41 on Dec. 2. He is the oldest current active player, but has some catching up to do if he aims to be the oldest player in league history. George Blanda played until he was 48 years old.

Aaron Rodgers’ contract

The Jets moved heaven and earth to acquire Rodgers in 2023, but haven’t really received any positive return on their investment. While the quarterback did restructure his deal upon his arrival in New Jersey, the reworked contract became a three-year, $112.5 million agreement, according to Spotrac.

It comes with an average salary of $37.5 million, but Rodgers carries a cap hit of only $17.1 million in 2024 that jumps to $23.5 million in 2025. The biggest problem for the Jets, however, is that the team will feel the effects of the Rodgers acquisition through 2029 thanks to the void years added to his contract. He is set to become a free agent after the 2025 season.

Aaron Rodgers’ stats

Through 10 games, Rodgers has led the Jets to a 3-7 record. He’s thrown 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions, passing for 2,258 yards and completing 62.4% of passes. It is arguably the worst season of Rodgers’ 16-year career as a starter, not counting his 2023 cameo.

Rodgers is gaining just 6.4 yards per pass attempt and owns just a 86.8 quarterback rating, both career lows. The Jets likely didn’t expect to see him play at an MVP level, but they aren’t even getting average play from Rodgers right now.

In Milwaukee, Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo recorded his ninth 50-point game.

Nearly 1,200 miles south in San Antonio, Spurs star Victor Wembanyama hit 50 points for the first time in his career.

The struggling Bucks needed Antetokounmpo’s 59-point, 14-rebound, seven-assist performance to beat the Detroit Pistons 127-120 in overtime Wednesday. The 59 points are the most any player has put up in a game this season.

Wembanyama scored 50 points in the Spurs’ 139-130 victory against the Washington Wizards, and it came on the same day that the Spurs revealed that Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich had a mild stroke Nov. 2 before the team played the Minnesota Timberwolves.

It’s just the 24th time there’s been multiple 50-point scorers on the same day in the regular season — the ninth time in the past 10 seasons and 12th time since 2000-01, according to the league.

Here’s a closer look at the performances from Wembanyama and Antetokounmpo:

Victor Wembanyama scores 50 vs. Wizards

At 20 years, 314 days old, Wembanyama became the fourth-youngest player to score 50 points in an NBA game – behind Brandon Jennings, LeBron James and Devin Booker.

It came in his 83rd NBA game, and he delivered a masterful shooting performance: 18-for-29 from the field, including 8-for-16 on 3-pointers. His eight made 3s, 18 made field goals and 29 shot attempts are career highs.

He also became the first Spurs player to score at least 50 points and make at least five 3s in a game. He added six rebounds, three blocks, two assists and one steal for the 6-6 Spurs. It overshadowed Washington guard Jordan Poole’s 42 points.

Wembanyama’s previous highest-scoring game came last season when he scored 40 points against the Philadelphia 76ers on April 7.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scores 59 points vs. Pistons

The Bucks won a second consecutive game for the first time this season, improving to 4-8, and Antetokounmpo made it possible with the second-highest scoring game of his career. He scored 11 of Milwaukee’s 16 overtime points on 5-for-5 shooting – one 3-pointer, two mid-range shots and two at the rim.

Antetokounmpo’s performance was a model of offensive efficiency: 21-for-34 from the field and 16-for-17 from the foul line – pretty good for a guy who is a 69.9% career free throw shooter and was shooting 55.4% on free throws this season before Wednesday’s game.

The 21 made field goals matches his career high. With his three blocks and two steals, he became the first player in the NBA to record at least 50 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two steals since blocks and steals became official stats in 1973-74.

Detroit’s Cade Cunningham had 35 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

On Wednesday, Nov. 13, Diamond Sports — which owns and operates 16 regional sports networks and recently rebranded due to a partnership with the FanDuel Sports Network — reached a deal with Amazon Prime to allow the popular streaming service to start broadcasting their games as an add-on subscription offer for Prime customers.

This isn’t the first time a sports broadcasting network has turned to streaming in order to overcome decreasing viewership numbers. Various networks, including the New York Yankees’ YES Network, which launched its own streaming service called Gotham Sports in October this year.

Amazon previously had invested a good chunk of change in Diamond Sports. In January, Amazon reached a deal with Diamond to gain access to some of their local content during the MLB season — particularly games for the Tampa Bay Rays, Kansas City Royals, Detroit Tigers, Miami Marlins and Milwaukee Brewers. At the time, Amazon did not have access to the entirety of Diamond Sports’ collection. After all, creditors had invested $450 million into Diamond Sports in order to ensure they could continue broadcasting NBA and NHL games through the end of the 2023-24 season.

Now though, it appears Amazon has come to collect on the rest of Diamond Sports’ ensemble. Here’s everything to know about Diamond Sports’ latest partnership:

Isn’t Diamond Sports going through bankruptcy?

Yes.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

However, just because Diamond Sports is going through bankruptcy doesn’t mean it can’t broadcast regional sports. Diamond Sports are currently undergoing a reorganization plan that has drawn skepticism from Major League Baseball. Diamond Sports is allegedly seeking court approval to go through with its partnership with Amazon despite MLB’s doubts. More information should become available on Thursday.

How will games be available on Amazon?

Diamond Sports announced earlier this week that it would be offering games on Amazon and the FanDuel Sports Network app on an a la carte basis. Essentially, fans will have the opportunity to spend $6.99 to watch individual games for certain teams broadcasting with Diamond Sports. A subscription will not be required.

That’s pretty pricey though, and unfortunately, that might just be how it is for the time being. Networks have been careful when it comes to pricing their streaming options, not wanting to make it so low that it would disrupt the cable TV model and breach their contracts with distributors. Despite the rapidly declining cable TV model, much of Diamond Sports’ broadcasting is still done through cable TV avenues.

Is this agreement exclusive?

No.

Diamond Sports allegedly still has the ability to find streaming deals with other streaming services. The main benefactor of this is FanDuel Sports, which had earned the rights to broadcast Diamond Sports’ content on its platforms in October. Streaming options with the FanDuel Sports Network, particularly through the network’s app, will still be available despite much of the content coming to Amazon.

The highly anticipated bout between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul is taking ringside seats to another level.

There are a variety of VIP packages available for Friday’s bout at AT&T Stadium, ranging from the VIP Contender Package ($5K) to the VIP Champion Package ($7.5K) and the Ringside VVIP Package ($20K). But they all pale in comparison to the MVP Owner’s Experience, which is valued at a whopping $2 million.

The price of the MVP Owner’s Experience may be a knockout blow to anyone’s wallet, but not to the national personal injury law firm, TorkLaw. Most Valuable Promotions and Elevate announced Wednesday that the Los Angeles-based law firm purchased the one-of-a-kind package.

The MVP Owner’s Experience offers unprecedented access to the fight, highlighted by a ringside suite built right outside of the ring. The two-person suite, which will be visible during Netflix’s exclusive broadcast, ‘marks the closest patron seating that has been historically approved by Texas boxing regulators,’ according to Most Valuable Promotions.

‘Life and sport often reflect each other in their unpredictability. At TorkLaw, as we spend our days fighting for our clients both inside and outside the courtroom, we see in boxing the same determination required to face life’s toughest battles,’ Korosh Torkzadeh, a partner at TorkLaw, said in a statement provided to USA TODAY Sports. ‘Our involvement in this event is more than just support for sport — it’s a celebration of the human spirit and the strength it takes to keep fighting, no matter the odds.’

The multimillion-dollar VIP package also comes with eight ringside seats, an onstage spot at weigh-in, a locker room visit with both boxers ahead of the fight, as well as an in-ring photo opportunity after the fight and multiple pairs of autographed gloves.

The MVP Owner’s Experience not only grants you access, but includes accommodations — a personal car service, security and a two-night stay at the Loews Arlington Hotel are included.

“TorkLaw has gone beyond traditional fan involvement by purchasing the MVP Owners Experience, allowing them to be at the very heart of this once-in-a-lifetime spectacle,’ said Nakisa Bidarian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions. ‘Their choice to engage so intimately with this historic event underscores TorkLaw’s commitment to embodying the spirit of ‘Champions of the People’ by diving into unique and significant cultural moments.

‘We are delighted to welcome TorkLaw into this exclusive experience, celebrating together the passion and drama of this extraordinary match. Thank you to our partners at Elevate for bringing Jake Paul, Mike Tyson and MVP’s vision to innovate the fan experience to fruition.”

Tyson vs. Paul is streaming exclusively on Netflix. The main card for the event will start at 8 p.m. ET.
