The ‘Thursday Night Football’ schedule has been terrific all season long, and Week 17 brings an NFC showdown for the final installment in 2024.

The Chicago Bears (4-11) will host the Seattle Seahawks (8-7) at Soldier Field for an intriguing matchup on Boxing Day.

The visiting Seahawks are coming off a disappointing home loss to the Minnesota Vikings and need a win to keep pace with the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West title race. Seattle has dropped two in a row another loss could eliminate them from playoff contention.

Here’s how the playoff scenarios break down for Seattle:

If the Rams win and the Seahawks lose or tie the Bears, they are eliminated from contention.
If the Rams tie and the Seahawks lose, the Rams clinch the division.
If the Rams lose on Saturday and the Seahawks win on Thursday, a winner-take-all Week 18 game would be held at SoFi Stadium.

Bears vs. Seahawks predictions

Seahawks 24, Bears 20

Seattle is 5-1 on the road this season.

The Seahawks have their backs against the wall and will play with a sense of desperation with their playoff hopes hanging in the balance.

Meanwhile, the Bears have been outscored 102-42 over their last three matchups. Bears QB Caleb Williams could be running for his life often with two starting offensive linemen likely out on Thursday night. Williams is navigating an incredibly difficult season in which his head coach and offensive coordinator were fired, and now his blockers are extremely banged up. The rookie has been sacked a league-high 60 times.

The Bears are down left tackle Braxton Jones and guard Tevin Jenkins on Thursday night. Seahawks defensive tackle Leonard Williams is having a career year and could make a major impact.

The Bears defense has struggled tremendously to slow down opposing passing games. They are allowing the second-highest yards per attempt (7.9). Seattle’s offense has tremendous players at the skilled positions headlined by DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. The dynamic duo will dominate this secondary.

Over the last six games, Chicago ranks 30th in opponent success rate and EPA per play allowed. The Seahawks rank third in EPA per play allowed and 11th in success rate allowed during this span. The Bears have allowed 179 total yards per game and seven touchdowns to opposing running backs in their last five games. Seattle should control this game from beginning to end.

In an age of advocacy journalism, April Ryan has long been a standout. Ryan routinely engaged in diatribes in White House press conferences during the Trump Administration and has openly opposed all things Republican or conservative. Now, the MSNBC contributor and Grio White House correspondent has declared that President Joe Biden was a ‘standard-bearer for what the Founding Fathers put in place.’ The reason? His much-criticized and partisan veto of The Judges Act. While even stalwart Biden allies like Delaware Sen. Chris Coons criticized the President for vetoing the badly needed, bipartisan measure to add new judges, Ryan declared it the work of a modern George Washington.

When the MSNBC host noted that The Judges Act ‘had bipartisan support’ and was needed to relieve the overloaded courts, Ryan responded by saying that an obstructionist partisan move is precisely what the Framers would have wanted:

‘It’s simple. This President Joe Biden, didn’t want to give President-elect Donald Trump a chance to add more conservatism into our courts, bottom line. I mean, you have so many people talking about how everything is weighed down right now. The White House on January 20 at noon will be Republican, the House, the Senate, what? Republican and the Supreme Court leans Republican. So this president wanted to ensure checks and balances.

…He is the standard bearer for what the Founding Fathers put in place. He wants to make sure everything goes well. And think about this, even though it wasn’t a federal judgeship, think about what happened with Merrick Garland. Think about the fact that Merrick Garland never got a chance to even have interviews with some senators because they rebuffed, they did not want to have a Democrat on the U.S. Supreme Court. In some ways, this is that as well. This is trying to hold the line, to make sure once again that fairness and equal play and checks and balances are in place.’

Ryan mixes rationales of avoiding adding conservative judges to retaliation for prior votes as a noble cause that harkens back to the founding.

Of course, as discussed in my book ‘The Indispensable Right,’ some like John Adams used the Alien and Sedition Acts to arrest their political opponents, but few point to that as the gold standard for the Founders. Ironically, I have previously drawn comparisons between Biden and Adams.

In vetoing the act, Biden once again shredded any claim to being a president who could put the public interest ahead of petty political interests.

Other Founders like Washington did not even support the creation of political parties, let alone endorse raw partisan moves by presidents. Indeed, Biden became the very thing that Washington wanted to avoid in saying that political partisanship:

‘… may now and then answer popular ends…by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government…’

The move by Biden is a disgrace. Our courts are overwhelmed by dockets that leave parties without any resolution for years. In 2004, the number of cases in district court pending for more than three years was 18,280. This year, there are 81,617.

If justice delayed is justice denied, our court system is becoming a tar pit of injustice, with litigants left without verdicts or relief for years.

Every responsible and independent group in the area supported this bill as essential to supporting and maintaining our legal system. The White House did not oppose the bill until Democrats lost the election. (Some Republicans also withheld their support until after the election).

Before the election, both Democrats and Republicans supported the bill in an all-too-rare moment of bipartisanship. Biden then vetoed it because he did not want a Republican to appoint new judges (even though the new judgeships would be added over a ten-year period).

In vetoing the act, Biden once again shredded any claim to being a president who could put the public interest ahead of petty political interests. It ends his presidency on a cynical, obstructionist note.

Nevertheless, Ryan and others on the far left are applauding the act as just what they want to see in a president.

It is one thing to discard any sense of integrity or responsibility, but do us a favor: leave the Founders out of it.

The State Department’s foreign disinformation center, accused by conservatives of censoring U.S. citizens, shut its doors due to lack of funding this week.

Elon Musk had deemed the Global Engagement Center (GEC), established in 2016, the ‘worst offender in U.S. government censorship & media manipulation,’ and its funding was stripped as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the Pentagon’s yearly policy bill.

‘The Global Engagement Center will terminate by operation of law [by the end of the day] on December 23, 2024,’ a State Department spokesperson said in a statement. ‘The Department of State has consulted with Congress regarding next steps.’

Lawmakers had originally included funding for the GEC in its continuing resolution (CR), or bill to fund the government beyond a Friday deadline. But conservatives balked at that iteration of the funding bill, and it was rewritten without money for the GEC and other funding riders.

The agency had a budget of around $61 million and 120 people on staff.

At a time when adversaries like Iran and Russia sow disinformation throughout the world, Republicans saw little value in the agency’s work, arguing that much of its disinformation analysis is already offered by the private sector.

The GEC, according to reporter Matt Taibbi, ‘funded a secret list of subcontractors and helped pioneer an insidious—and idiotic—new form of blacklisting’ during the pandemic.

Taibbi wrote last year when exposing the Twitter Files that the GEC ‘flagged accounts as ‘Russian personas and proxies’ based on criteria like, ‘Describing the Coronavirus as an engineered bioweapon,’ blaming ‘research conducted at the Wuhan institute,’ and ‘attributing the appearance of the virus to the CIA.’’

‘State also flagged accounts that retweeted news that Twitter banned the popular U.S. website ZeroHedge, claiming that it ‘led to another flurry of disinformation narratives.” ZeroHedge had made reports speculating that the virus had a lab origin.

The GEC is part of the State Department but also partners with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Central Intelligence Agency, the National Security Agency, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Special Operations Command and the Department of Homeland Security. The GEC also funds the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab).

DFRLab Director Graham Brookie previously denied the claim that they use tax money to track Americans, saying its GEC grants have ‘an exclusively international focus.’

A 2024 report from the Republican-led House Small Business Committee criticized the GEC for awarding grants to organizations whose work includes tracking domestic as well as foreign misinformation and rating the credibility of U.S.-based publishers, according to the Washington Post.

The lawsuit was brought by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Daily Wire and the Federalist, who sued the State Department, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other government officials earlier this month for ‘engaging in a conspiracy to censor, deplatform and demonetize American media outlets disfavored by the federal government.’

The lawsuit stated that the GEC was used as a tool for the defendants to carry out its censorship.

’Congress authorized the creation of the Global Engagement Center expressly to counter foreign propaganda and misinformation,’ the Texas Attorney General’s Office said in a press release. ‘Instead, the agency weaponized this authority to violate the First Amendment and suppress Americans’ constitutionally-protected speech.

The complaint describes the State Department’s project as ‘one of the most egregious government operations to censor the American press in the history of the nation.’’

The lawsuit argued that The Daily Wire, The Federalist and other conservative news organizations were branded ‘unreliable’ or ‘risky’ by the agency, ‘starving them of advertising revenue and reducing the circulation of their reporting and speech—all as a direct result of [the State Department’s] unlawful censorship scheme.’

Meanwhile, America First Legal, headed up by Stephen Miller, President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for deputy chief of staff for policy, revealed that the GEC had used taxpayer dollars to create a video game called ‘Cat Park’ to ‘Inoculate Youth Against Disinformation’ abroad.

The game ‘inoculates players . . . by showing how sensational headlines, memes, and manipulated media can be used to advance conspiracy theories and incite real-world violence,’ according to a memo obtained by America First Legal.

Mike Benz, the executive director at the Foundation For Freedom Online, said the game was ‘anti-populist’ and pushed certain political beliefs instead of protecting Americans from foreign disinformation, accordig to the Tennessee Star.

A Starbucks barista strike is expanding to 5,000 workers at what organizers said was more than 300 stores in 45 states, just as the company’s busy holiday stretch begins.

Though it still represents only about 3% of all U.S. Starbucks locations, it’s an expansion of an action that began last week in three cities.

Organized by the Service Employees International Union and Starbucks Workers United, the strike aims to draw attention to allegations of unfair labor practices and stalled negotiations over a contract that would cover thousands of workers. The workers are seeking an immediate increase in Starbucks’ minimum hourly wage by as much as 64% and over 77% over the life of a three-year contract.

“After all Starbucks has said about how they value partners throughout the system, we refuse to accept zero immediate investment in baristas’ wages and no resolution of the hundreds of outstanding unfair labor practices,’ Lynne Fox, president of the Workers Union, said in a statement. ‘Baristas know their value, and they’re not going to accept a proposal that doesn’t treat them as true partners.”

Starbucks said only around 170 Starbucks stores did not open as planned. It said 98% of its over 10,000 company-operated stores and nearly 200,000 employees continued to work as normal.

In a memo to employees posted by the company, a Starbucks executive called the union’s demands ‘not sustainable’ and touted the overall benefits package workers can receive, noting employees who work at least 20 hours a week get $30 an hour, on average, in combined pay and benefits.

‘The union chose to walk away from bargaining last week,’ said Sara Kelly, a Starbucks executive vice president. ‘We are ready to continue negotiations when the union comes back to the bargaining table.’

Starbucks enjoyed a surge in investor sentiment after it poached Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol to be lead it in August, though its share price has declined in recent weeks alongside the broader market pullback.

Niccol has pledged to negotiate with the union in good faith, though his previous tenure at the burrito chain was marked by at least two settlements with workers demanded by the National Labor Relations Board.

Was the NFL’s latest attempt to claim ownership of the Christmas sporting space the kind of present worthy of a spot under the tree? Depends what was on your list.

There’s little question that all four teams that played Wednesday were deserving of the holiday scheduling slot, with each headed to the playoffs next month. And the games were plenty consequential, with the Kansas City Chiefs clinching the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs thanks to a 29-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, which allowed the Baltimore Ravens to seize control over the AFC North with a 31-2 victory over the Houston Texans. But with neither game ending up particularly close – and the same foursome playing just four days earlier, albeit in different matchups – any viewer would be justified in feeling as though they had been regifted something that should have been a White Elephant present.

Still, there’s no denying that there was substantial fallout from the doubleheader. Here are the winners and losers of the NFL Christmas slate:

WINNERS

Travis Kelce

He surpassed 1,000 career receptions Wednesday, joining Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten as the only tight ends to ever hit that benchmark. Kelce also caught his 77th career TD pass, breaking a tie with Gonzalez as the Chiefs’ all-time leader in that department. Kelce paid tribute to his Hall of Fame forebear by dunking the ball over the goalpost following the score, a celebration that draws a flag nowadays but didn’t when Gonzalez played for K.C.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

The Eagles (no, not Philadelphia)

Could Ian and Noah Eagle become the Mannings of the broadcast booth? Perhaps premature, but the father and son play-by-play voices (Ian was in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Noah at Houston) are unfailingly smooth, informative and generally keep the spotlight where it belongs – whether on the field or when teeing up their analysts. Like Archie Manning, Ian Eagle, 55, is probably never going to work a Super Bowl as his profession’s version of QB1, but it feels like he’s getting some belated appreciation later in his career. However don’t be surprised if Noah Eagle, 28, continues to get plum assignments, and he might just rise to the top of the profession as some of the NFL’s older leading men on the mic cycle out.

Beyoncé and Mariah Carey

Not that they needed it, but two of the world’s most recognizable female entertainers got some heavy exposure on Wednesday’s afternoon-long presentation. Carey’s pre-produced rendition of her hit ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ ran prior to kickoff of both games. Beyoncé put on quite a show at halftime in Houston, her hometown – with quite a mix of her musical catalog and some appearances by some other heavy hitters – and basically provided the only thing Texans had to cheer all day.

Xavier Worthy

Wednesday marked the fourth consecutive game that the Chiefs’ rookie receiver set a new high for receptions, this time hauling in eight catches for 79 yards – also a personal best – and a touchdown. With nine scores on the year, the NFL’s fastest man – at least if you go by his record 4.21-second 40-yard dash at this year’s NFL scouting combine – is now tied with Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr. for the most among first-year players. After initially struggling to adapt to the pro game and establish himself in a shifting receiving corps, Worthy now has emerged as a key weapon on quick hits for an offense navigating significant protection problems, especially with Hollywood Brown’s return helping further clarify his role. He did land on the naughty list, though, for capping off a holiday-themed touchdown celebration by appearing to mimic showing a holstered gun, earning him an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Ravens defense

They reclaimed the AFC North lead Saturday – before whacking the Texans – and have clearly re-emerged as Super Bowl threats after a bumpy midseason stretch. Yet while so much of the attention around this team is focused on QB Lamar Jackson and RB Derrick Henry, the team’s 2024 resurgence has largely coincided with a defensive rebound. Since its Week 14 bye, Baltimore has allowed 33 points – which was more typical of a single game earlier in the season. But rookie DC Zach Orr has his unit on track, in large part thanks to multi-talented S Kyle Hamilton exerting his various talents of late and a pass rush being led by veteran LB Kyle Van Noy. It’s starting to look like this team could actually survive a playoff game even if Jackson and Henry aren’t dominating.

Denver Broncos

It couldn’t have been easy for Broncos fans to cheer on their rival, especially when a win secured such a favorable playoff setup for Kansas City. But the outcome opens up the possibility – or perhaps likelihood – that the Chiefs will be resting their most significant contributors for the regular-season finale against Denver. Sean Payton and Co. would obviously prefer to end the NFL’s second-longest active playoff drought on Saturday by beating the Cincinnati Bengals. But the Broncos can rest a bit easier knowing the Chiefs won’t have anything to play for and might be opting for some R&R.

Netflix

The pregame scrutiny ahead of the streaming service’s regular-season NFL debut was certainly high – largely due to some notable hiccups during last month’s Jake Paul-Mike Tyson ‘fight.’ But Wednesday’s productions seemed to basically go off almost without a hitch. Should be interesting now to ponder Netflix’s future involvement with the NFL given how the breadcrumbs seem to point to some kind of annual Christmas broadcast package.

J.J. Watt

It’s generally almost better to retire a year too early than a year too late. And while the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year could probably still be playing meaningful snaps in the league, he’s made a really nice transition to broadcasting – including Saturday’s turn as an in-game analyst, when Watt’s insight, sense of humor and ability to be a team player in a three-man booth all shone.

Lamar Jackson’s MVP campaign

Last year’s Christmas rout of the San Francisco 49ers served as the unofficial coronation of his second MVP campaign. While Jackson isn’t the runaway favorite now, this game could end up being an inflection point for the award. After Derrick Henry led the way early, Jackson tossed two touchdowns and ran for another by outracing the entire Texans defense. Josh Allen, meanwhile, won’t have meaningful matchups in the final two weeks, leaving Jackson – who on Wednesday became the NFL’s career leader in rushing yards by a quarterback – as the one with late-season sizzle. And with the Ravens moving atop the AFC North – and the chance to clinch next week – as perhaps the team in the conference no one wants to face, Jackson’s case for a repeat is gaining some serious steam.

NFL fans

For those who can’t be with their families, have too much time with families, just can’t get enough pro football – and perhaps with fantasy football championship implications at stake, particularly given the caliber of players in action Wednesday – and/or simply can’t get invested in NBA games this early in their season, then the flag the NFL has apparently planted on Christmas is a very welcome development that seems destined to continue in perpetuity considering the league is now willing to manipulate its schedule to accommodate Wednesday games.

LOSERS

NFL players

The Steelers, Texans, Chiefs and Ravens have all played three games in 11 days in order for the NFL to shoehorn Wednesday football into its schedule. And while that might be a win for ravenous football viewers, it’s most certainly not for those between the lines – and also runs counter to the narrative the league so often cites regarding the importance of player safety. Maybe this proves to just be the rare one-off when Christmas falls on a Wednesday and necessitates this level of schedule doctoring – playing on a Tuesday or Friday would be easier to build into the lineup. But this certainly doesn’t feel like it’s in the best interest of the players, and most certainly not at this late stage of the season – and it’s worth wondering if they’ll be sufficiently recovered even with the 11-day layoff they’ll get before Week 18. (It’s also an especially tough ask of the Chiefs and Ravens, who also played on Christmas last year. Tuesday will be the only day of the week that Kansas City does not have a game during the 2024 season.)

T.J. Watt

In addition to an ankle issue, we also learned on the Netflix stream Wednesday that Pittsburgh’s All-Pro pass rusher is dealing with a bum thumb – which might further explain why he’s been next to invisible in the past two games. Not a good development give how closely the struggling Steelers’ fortunes so often mirror Watt’s.

Netflix

This isn’t so much a criticism, but it must be noted that Wednesday’s success occurred with quite a few guardrails in place – notably Netflix’s ability to borrow so much established NFL broadcast and production talent as well as infrastructure, namely NFL Network’s broadcast studio. If Netflix aspires to do more than just a handful of games per season – i.e. competing with, say, rival Prime Video’s Thursday night package – then it’s still basically untested regarding its ability to pull off this level of coverage with in-house assets.

AFC pretenders

The football world already knows what the Chiefs, in possession of the AFC’s No. 1 seed yet again, are capable of – and certainly when the road to the Super Bowl goes through Arrowhead. But Kansas City’s victory Wednesday was deflating elsewhere for several reasons. The Buffalo Bills lost their shot at home-field advantage throughout. Flawed teams like the Broncos, Steelers, Texans and Los Angeles Chargers must all come to grips with the likelihood that one of them is headed to Kansas City after the Chiefs have effectively had two-plus weeks off. And while the fact that the reigning champs may have nothing to play for in Week 18 when the Broncos come to town – potentially great news for Denver as previously noted – that reality also could very well further undermine the already faint playoff hopes of the Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins, all needing a lot of help (including two Denver losses) to get in.

Russell Wilson

It wasn’t the 2022 Christmas debacle, in which the infighting Broncos’ implosion in a 51-14 no-show against the Los Angeles Rams led to first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett being fired the next day. But this wasn’t the smoothest sleigh ride for Wilson. His first-quarter interception after a Jaylen Warren touchdown was called back was deflating, and he gift-wrapped at least a couple of his five sacks. And even with George Pickens back after missing three games with a hamstring injury, Wilson couldn’t get much going downfield, with a season-low 5.5 yards per attempt. With both the 13-year veteran and the Steelers facing an uncertain future beyond the final year of the signal-caller’s contract, Mr. Unlimited sure looked … limited.

Steelers

But Pittsburgh’s troubles go well beyond Wilson at this point. No team suffered more over the past 11 days than the Steelers, who went from 10-3 to 10-6 – retrograding from a squad with a shot at the AFC’s No. 1 seed … to a team with a shot at winning the AFC North. Maybe. And while they’ve probably already exceeded the expectations many outside their locker room had over the summer, the Steelers also don’t look like a team that’s going to break an eight-year drought since its last postseason win given the way Wilson’s play has deteriorated – to say nothing of the defense at large. And with the quarterback position already an open question for 2025, there’s also no certainty that Pittsburgh’s current iteration is building in a holistically meaningful way toward next season.

C.J. Stroud

To be fair, the season-ending injuries to receivers Tank Dell and Stefon Diggs were major hits to the well-being of this offense, with the former’s gruesome incident particularly weighing on Stroud. But it’s worth wondering if Stroud would be the subject of heavier scrutiny in his sophomore campaign if he played for a franchise afforded the spotlight more often. Whether it was holding onto the ball too long, his ugly interception thrown to Hamilton at the start of the second half or just missing open targets, the reigning NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year was routinely responsible for drive-killing plays. Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik bears some responsibility for the ongoing issues, with last week’s repeated failed screens against the Chiefs serving as the latest ill-fated attempt to address the rampant protection problems. But it’s clear that this performance – which would have been only the second shutout of the NFL season if not for the defense getting on the board with a second-quarter safety – is untenable for a team now locked into the No. 4 seed in the AFC playoffs.

Jerry Jones

It’s certainly a stretch to assume the Texans will become a Christmas Day staple the way Jones’ Dallas Cowboys have long starred in the late-afternoon slot on Thanksgiving. But, in terms of 2024 anyway, Houston has Texas’ better NFL team and – far more important – Beyoncé’s Lone Star State-inspired halftime show completely overshadowed … whatever the Cowboys did at intermission on Turkey Day this year. Guess the Texans were just ‘all in.’

That San Antonio Spurs-New York Knicks game at noon ET looked pretty good. And there was a time when a lot of people would’ve watched it and more of the compelling matchups the Association has historically served up on Christmas. Now? Pretty much a ghost of Christmas past.

Despite a season replete with close calls, the Kansas City Chiefs ensured that the AFC playoffs will run through Arrowhead Stadium.

With a 29-10 win Wednesday over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Chiefs (15-1) clinched the No. 1 seed in the conference and home-field advantage. It marks the fourth time under coach Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes that the team has secured the AFC’s top seed.

Now, as the Chiefs pursue a historic Super Bowl three-peat, the team can extend its record by hosting a sixth consecutive AFC championship game if it can prevail in its divisional-round matchup.

‘I told my wife, my pregnant wife, I was gonna get her the No. 1 seed so we can go have that baby,’ Mahomes said in a postgame interview. ‘So we got the 1 seed.’

Kansas City scored touchdowns on its two opening drives and then put the game away in the fourth quarter with two additional touchdown marches. Mahomes finished with 320 yards and three touchdown strikes on 29-of-38 passing, and the defense kept the pressure on Russell Wilson with five sacks.

The 19-point deficit was the Chiefs’ greatest margin of victory this season, which has featured 11 of their wins coming in one-score games.

With the top seed in hand, the Chiefs now can sit their starters in the regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos if they choose, potentially providing an extended break for the likes of Mahomes, who has been dealing with a high ankle sprain, and defensive tackle Chris Jones, who missed Wednesday’s game with a hamstring injury. A win in Week 18, however, would place Kansas City alongside the 2007 New England Patriots, who went 16-0, as the only 16-team wins in NFL history.

The Steelers (10-6), meanwhile, ceded the AFC North division lead to the Baltimore Ravens, who beat the Houston Texans 31-2 later in the day.

A trio of House Democrats in the progressive ‘Squad’ is demanding an end to the U.S.-led investigation into a key ally’s anti-Israel arms embargo.

Reps. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., Cori Bush, D-Mo., and Summer Lee, D-Pa., wrote to the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC), an independent agency that oversees maritime trade affecting the U.S., regarding Spain’s ‘decision to deny port entry to ships carrying weapons bound for the Israeli government and its ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.’

‘This investigation is a reckless insult to our allies in Spain, which has only sought to enforce in good faith its sovereign national policies and uphold international law, including its treaty obligations to prevent genocide,’ the hardline-left lawmakers wrote.

‘It is bad enough that the United States is violating these same obligations and its own domestic laws by sending these weapons. We urge you to immediately suspend this obstruction of justice and withdraw this misguided investigation.’

Spain, a longstanding U.S. ally and fellow member of NATO, said it would stop selling weapons to Israel when its war with Hamas broke out in October 2023.

Since then, the Spanish government has been accused in three separate instances of refusing ships from docking in its ports over allegations those ships were carrying weapons meant for Israel.

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares told state TV channel RTVE of one of the incidents in May, according to the Associated Press. ‘The Middle East needs peace. That is why this first denial of authorization will start a policy for any boat carrying arms to Israel that wants to dock at a Spanish port.’

The FMC opened its probe earlier this month after receiving information that ‘indicates Spain has refused entry to certain vessels on at least three separate occasions this year,’ a press release read. ‘The two most recent instances involved U.S.-flagged vessels.’

The agency will now ‘investigate whether regulations or practices of foreign governments result in conditions unfavorable to shipping in the foreign trade of the United States.’

But the House Democrats wrote: ‘Spain’s decisions to bar the Maersk Denver and the Maersk Seletar from stopping in transit at its port in Algeciras in early November, as well as its decision to deny port of call to the Marianne Danica at the port of Cartegena in May of this year, are legitimate actions taken by a sovereign state to ensure that it is in compliance with international human rights and humanitarian law.’

Tlaib, Bush and Lee have been three of Congress’ loudest critics of the Israeli government since it launched its invasion in Gaza.

The campaign was launched in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 surprise attack in southern Israel. Terrorists crossed the border and killed more than 1,200 Israelis who were in their homes, attending a music festival, and other areas.

The responding operation to eradicate Hamas in Gaza has killed more than 45,000 people, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.

The trio of House Democrats has frequently accused the Biden administration of improperly acquiescing to Israel, the U.S.’s closest ally in the Middle East.

They also argued the U.S. has no standing to investigate Spain’s decision, claiming ‘these actions do nothing to threaten the reliable international ocean transportation supply system that the FMC is tasked with safeguarding.’

‘No agency of the United States should be in the business of punishing or sanctioning our allies for enforcing the international law that our government has refused to uphold,’ they wrote.

Spain, along with Ireland and Norway, made the decision to formally recognize Palestinian statehood earlier this year.

Fox News Digital reached out to the FMC for comment.

Breadth became oversold last week and stocks rebounded this week. Is this a robust rebound or a dead cat bounce? Today’s report will show a key short-term breadth indicator hitting its lowest level in 2024 and becoming oversold. A rebound is in place, but it is still too early to call this a robust rebound and we will show the critical level to watch.

Short-term breadth indicators, such as the percentage of stocks above their 50-day SMAs, are well-suited to identify oversold setups. For example, SPX %Above 50-day SMA fluctuates between 0 and 100%, and becomes oversold with a move below 20%. Such a move signals excessive downside participation that can foreshadow a bounce in SPY. The chart below shows this indicator in the top window and SPY in the lower window. The pink shadings mark oversold periods. There were three in 2022, three in 2023 and just one in 2024, which is a testament to the strong bull market this year.

Oversold is a double-edged sword. While oversold conditions increase the chances for a bounce, an indicator can become oversold and remain oversold. Keep in mind that oversold conditions materialize after strong selling pressure. Stocks were hit hard and often need some time to stabilize before a successful rebound. On the chart above, we can see oversold conditions lasting 4-5 weeks on three occasions. We can also see double dips as the indicator bounced and then dipped back below 20% (pink arrows).

When does an oversold bounce go from a dead cat bounce to a robust rebound? When there is a material increase in upside participation. A move above 50% means the cup is half full for short-term trends. I add a little buffer to this threshold by requiring a move above 60%. This ensures that most stocks are recovering, increasing the chances for a robust rebound. The blue dashed lines on the chart below show these signals.

Signals within bull markets usually work better than signals within bear markets. There were two signals in 2022, which was a bear market period. Price extended higher after these bounces, but the bounces were relatively short-lived as the bear market reasserted control. The bull signal in April 2023 proved timely, as did the bull signal in mid November 2023.

Looking at the current situation, SPX %Above 50-day became oversold with a dip below 20% last week and moved back above 30% this week. Further strength above 60% is needed to show a material increase in upside participation. Given the propensity for double dips, I would also be on guard for another dip below 20%.

We will next look at another short-term breadth indicator for setups and signals. This indicator is more sensitive than SPX %Above 50-day, which can generate timelier signals. This section continues for Chart Trader subscribers.

Lamar Jackson now stands alone as the NFL’s most prolific quarterback when it comes to the ground game.

In Wednesday’s 31-2 win over the Houston Texans, the Baltimore Ravens quarterback broke Michael Vick’s record for career rushing yards (6,109) by a quarterback. Jackson, who is in his seventh season, accomplished the feat despite playing in 41 fewer games than Vick (143 to 102).

Jackson set the mark on a 6-yard run in the third quarter. He finished with 87 rushing yards on four carries, which included a 48-yard touchdown run.

The two-time NFL MVP – who’s squarely in the running for a third honor this season – said before the season that the record was not of particular importance to him.

‘I’m trying to get a Super Bowl,’ Jackson said on ‘The Lounge’ podcast. ‘If that record comes, so be it. But that’s not my goal. If it happens, I’m going to cherish it. Hopefully the record (wouldn’t) be broken for a long time from now, but it’s not my goal.’

After the game, Jackson said he was ‘grateful’ to break the record held by ‘one of my favorite players.’
