The Philadelphia Eagles are flying away with first place in the NFC East following a 26-18 victory over the Washington Commanders.

It wasn’t pretty, but Philadelphia got the job done to improve to 8-2 on the season. The Commanders dropped to 7-4 and theirs dreams of becoming division champions are beginning to fade. Thursday night didn’t look like a battle for first place, but rather an ode to the days of the ‘NFC Least.’

Saquon Barkley continued to shine, rushing for 146 yards and posting two touchdowns while falling inches short of a third. If it wasn’t clear by now, the Eagles will go as Barkley goes. The playoff push is on, but these Eagles will need to clean it up if they want to make some noise in January … and February.

The upstart Commanders couldn’t get anything going on Thursday night, but were able to mostly measure up against a far better opponent. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but the Commanders are on the fast track to success in an area where everything moves at a snail’s pace.

Here’s a look at how the action unfolded on Thursday night:

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Commanders vs. Eagles highlights

Final: Eagles 26, Commanders 18

Commanders’ onside kick attempt fails

Zane Gonzalez doesn’t have the magic foot as it’s easily recovered by Dallas Goedert. The curtain is now closed and the Eagles will run out the clock to hold onto first place in the NFC East.

Commanders-Eagles score update: Zach Ertz keeps Washington alive

The curtains are almost closed, but not entirely. Ertz finds the end zone against his former team and collects the two-point conversion for the Octopus to cut the Eagles’ lead to eight. With just 28 seconds to go, Washington will need to recover an onside kick to have a chance. Eagles 26, Commanders 18.

Commanders-Eagles score update: Saquon Barkley scores dagger TD

That was quick. Barkley gets his second touchdown in the last 20 seconds with a 39-yard run. It’s curtains for Washington. Eagles 26, Commanders 10.

Jayden Daniels intercepted by Reed Blankenship

The wheels are completely off for the Commanders now, as Daniels tosses an interception to Blankenship. Philly can chew the clock and relax the rest of the way.

Commanders-Eagles score update: Saquon Barkley scores

Saquon Barkley might’ve just put this one on ice. He rushes in from 23 yard out to put Philly up 19-10 with just 4:58 to go. Dallas Goedert had the big 31-yard catch on this drive (though he nearly fumbled and was saved by fellow tight end Grant Calcaterra). After Washington’s failed fourth-down try, it’ll take a big effort to have a chance in this one. Eagles 19, Commanders 10.

Washington gets aggressive but comes up short on 4th down

Faced with the opportunity to take the lead, Washington elected to roll the dice and go for it on fourth down. The play is blown up in the backfield, with Jayden Daniels running out of room on the sidelines.

Commanders-Eagles score update: Philly takes first lead with TD, but Jake Elliott misses extra point

The Eagles have finally broken through. Jalen Hurts finds pay dirt with 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter. The patented ‘Brotherly Shove,’ or ‘Tush Push,’ gets the job done once again. That moment of jubilation is short-lived, however. Jake Elliott continues his night to forget by pulling the extra point wide left. These things typically come back to haunt teams, so Washington might be feeling good now despite being down. Eagles 12, Commanders 10.

End of third quarter: Washington maintains lead heading into final frame

Another fast-paced quarter comes to an end with really no changes. The Commanders are still nursing a four-point lead, while the Eagles’ offense continues to be nothing but empty calories.

Commanders-Eagles score update: Jake Elliott gets FG right back

If the Eagles were a car, they’d be getting checked out by the mechanic. Philly just can’t stop stalling out, this time wasting a 74-yard drive to settle for three from Jake Elliott. The kicker is money from inside 50, knocking through this 31-yard try. Saquon Barkley’s catch-and-run for 43 yards will be merely a blip on the highlight reel, but nothing good truly came out of it. Commanders 10, Eagles 6.

Commanders-Eagles score update: Zane Gonzalez extends Washington’s lead

Washington scores on its opening drive of the second half, finishing it off with a 45-yard field goal from Gonzalez. Commanders 10, Eagles 3.

Jalen Hurts injury update

A tough first half for the Philadelphia Eagles ended with a major injury scare.

Despite controlling the time of possession and nearly running double the amount of plays, the Eagles trailed the Washington Commanders 7-3 at halftime. But the images at the end of the half were even more alarming.

Thankfully for the Eagles, he jogged off the field at halftime and was cleared to return after a concussion evaluation.

Commanders-Eagles score update: Philly cuts into Washington’s lead

The teams traded punts for a majority of the second quarter, before the Eagles decided to put their foot on the gas. NFL fans can appreciate the work of Tress Way and Braden Mann, but it’s unlikely fans are paying for Prime Video to watch a punter duel.

Either way, Philly is finally on the board courtesy of a Jake Elliott field goal. He knocks it through from 21 yards out to avoid the boos that would’ve rained down from the Philly faithful if he’d missed a third kick in the first half. The Eagles got the ball all the way to the Washington 3-yard line before failing to punch it in. Commanders 7, Eagles 3

Jake Elliott stats

Elliott has been a good kicker for the Eagles, even knocking through a couple of 60 yarders in his career. However, distance isn’t his forte this season. Elliott has attempted four field goals from 50 yards or longer this season, missing all of them. That will make life difficult for this Philly offense, knowing it can’t trust its kicker to come through from long range. Elliott, like a basketball player, needs to see one go through before getting his mojo back.

Eagles’ drive stalls, Jake Elliott misses another field goal

It’s becoming a theme, but the Eagles weren’t able to capitalize on great field position. Jake Elliott missed again, this time from 51 yards out. Philly tried some razzle-dazzle, but that was sniffed out by Frankie Luvu, who dropped Jalen Hurts for a big loss. Now Washington gets a chance at having good field position, looking to extend its lead.

End of the first quarter: Commanders lead after 15 minutes

The Eagles controlled the time of possession and ran twice as many plays as the Commanders, but have nothing to show for it after one. They trail 7-0, but have the ball at the Washington 41-yard line when play resumes.

Commanders-Eagles score update: Brian Robinson Jr. punches it in to give Washington lead

Washington’s first drive lasted a minute and ended with a quick punt. Washington’s second drive lasted two minutes and ended with a touchdown. Brian Robinson Jr. finished it off with a 1-yard run to get the Commanders on the board. The running backs did the damage on this drive. Austin Ekeler’s 34-yard catch-and-run set it up and Robinson’s 18-yard carry got the Commanders down to the goal line.

Washington leads 7-0.

Saquon Barkley goes over 1,000 yards rushing

A fantastic season for the star running back continues, as Barkley gets over the 1,000 rushing yard mark on an 8-yard carry to start the drive. He came up short in 2023 after posting 1,312 yards in 2022. Barkley has dealt with plenty of injuries, and inept offenses, during his career, but is back to star status in Philadelphia.

Barkley’s next challenge is to get back to 2,000 scrimmage yards, something he hasn’t done since his rookie year in 2018. With seven more games to go, there’s a real chance he’s able to get there once again.

Commanders start with a three-and-out

Washington caught a break on the Jake Elliott miss, but was unable to do anything with its good fortune. A quick three-and-out took only about a minute off the clock before allowing Jalen Hurts and the Eagles to go back to work.

Eagles come up empty on opening drive after Jake Elliott misses field goal

Philly’s opening drive got off to a promising start, with the big play being an A.J. Brown 32-yard catch-and-run. The drive quickly stalled after a penalty, forcing the Eagles to settle for three. However, Jake Elliott pushed his kick wide left on the 44-yard try. No score through five minutes.

Landon Dickerson injury update: Eagles guard helped off field

We’re just over a minute into tonight’s festivities and we have our first injury of the night: Eagles left guard Landon Dickerson. He was rolled up on and limped off the field after a Saquon Barkley run. Tyler Steen is in to replace him for the time being.

The highly-anticipated fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul is only one day away, but fans got a taste of what’s to come on Thursday after the weigh-in between the two fighters came to blows.

Paul and Tyson both weighed in Thursday at the Toyota Music Factory in Irving, Texas, during an event that was broadcast live. Paul weighed in at 227 pounds and Tyson weighed 228.4 pounds. After Tyson stepped off the scale, he approached Paul for a final face-off. That’s when chaos ensued.

Paul crawled toward Tyson, which appeared to upset Tyson. Tyson slapped Paul in the face and was immediately separated from Paul by security personnel. Paul didn’t appear fazed by the slap as he blew kisses at Tyson, laughed and clapped.

‘I didn’t even feel it,’ Paul said. ‘He’s angry. He’s an angry little elf. Mike Tyson, I thought that was a cute slap.’

Tyson said ‘talking is over,’ but Paul added that ‘it’s personal now.’

Tyson vs. Paul is streaming exclusively on Netflix Friday. The main card for the event will start at 8 p.m. ET.

So ‘College GameDay,’ what do you want to talk about?

Adrenaline will be in the soul of ESPN’s college football pregame show as Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes will be the celebrity guest picker this week. The show will take place in Athens, Georgia for the matchup between the Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee Volunteers.

Rhodes, who grew up in Georgia, is a fan of the Bulldogs. ‘The American Nightmare’ talked about his fandom on ‘The Pat McAfee Show’ before, calling himself a ‘Georgia guy.’

‘That’s my life, is the ‘Dawgs. I went to Georgia football camp as a kid, I took a picture with Uga,’ he said. ‘I love my ‘Dawgs.’

Rhodes will be another WWE star to appear on the show that stars McAfee, who serves as a WWE commentator during the football offseason. Sheamus served as the celebrity guest picker in his home city of Ireland when the show kicked off the 2024 season between Georgia Tech and Florida State. In 2022, Bianca Belair was a guest picker when her alma mater hosted a matchup against Florida. Other WWE stars to appear on the show include Stone Cold Steve Austin, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Roman Reigns Goldberg and Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler.

Rhodes, who has been the WWE champion since WrestleMania 40 in April, is coming off winning the inaugural Crown Jewel Championship.

The Tampa Bay Rays aren’t going far to play their home games in 2025 as Tropicana Field undergoes hurricane repairs – though they will be inhabiting the longtime spring home of their division rivals.

The Rays announced Thursday that they will play their 2025 games at Tampa’s Steinbrenner Field, the spring-training home of the New York Yankees with a capacity of around 11,000 fans.

For the first and perhaps only time in their history, the Rays will play home games in Tampa proper, having occupied St. Petersburg’s Tropicana Field since their inaugural season of 1998. And they have received preliminary approval to build a new stadium next to the Trop in time for the 2028 season.

But after Hurricane Milton did significant damage to Tropicana Field – most notably shredding its roof, a crucial blow for a facility with no drainage system – the Rays needed a place to play in 2025. The team and Pinellas County estimated earlier this week it would cost $55 million for repairs – for the 2026 season.

In Steinbrenner Field, the Rays get a relatively major league-ready facility with more capacity than most spring training homes, while remaining in their home area. They will have to battle the elements – searing heat and humidity as early as late April, and thunderstorms throughout the summer – as they bunk with the Yankees’ Class A Tampa Tarpons minor league squad.

All things Rays: Latest Tampa Bay Rays news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

But as stopgaps go, it could be worse.

‘We deeply appreciate that the Yankees have graciously allowed us to play at Steinbrenner Field for the 2025 season,’’ Rays Principal Owner Stuart Sternberg said in a prepared statement. ‘The hurricane damage to Tropicana Field has forced us to take some extraordinary steps, just as Hurricanes Helene and Milton have forced thousands of families and businesses in our community to adapt to new circumstances as we all recover and rebuild.’’

Remarkably, two major league teams will play in minor league facilities in 2025, one due to natural disasters, the other a creation of ownership. The Athletics will play the first of at least three seasons at a Class AAA ballpark in West Sacramento, with a capacity of close to 14,000, as they attempt to build a new stadium in Las Vegas.

The Rays considered several in-state options, with MLB commissioner Rob Manfred loosely hoping for a December resolution to their temporary home. The Atlanta Braves’ former spring complex at Walt Disney World near Orlando was a viable option, and the logistically-troubling notion of playing some home games at Miami’s loanDepot park was mulled.

Yet Steinbrenner Field continues to renovate and modernize and will certainly get a nice touch-up to create a regular-season, major league experience for both the Rays, opposing teams and fans.

The Yankees have trained in Tampa since 1996 and also had multiple spring-training stints in St. Petersburg. They first decamped to Florida for spring training in 1919.

And Tampa has been the Yankees’ de facto southern headquarters for decades; an area high school is named after late owner George Steinbrenner.

‘We are happy to extend our hand to the Rays and their fans by providing a Major League-quality facility for them to utilize this season,’ said chairman Hal Steinbrenner. “Both the Yankees organization and my family have deep roots in the Tampa Bay region, and we understand how meaningful it is for Rays players, employees and fans to have their 2025 home games take place within 30 minutes of Tropicana Field.

‘In times like these, rivalry and competition take a back seat to doing what’s right for our community — which is continuing to help families and businesses rebound from the devastation caused by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.’

As Milton made its way through the Tampa Bay area and onward to wreak havoc in North Carolina, the shredded Tropicana Field roof became a symbol of the hurricane’s damage. The disaster may also complicate funding for the Rays’ new stadium, as votes to initiate bonds for $600 million in public funds from Pinellas County and St. Petersburg were delayed last month, and the political complexion of both municipalities has since changed with last week’s election.

The new Rays stadium is slated to be the $1.3 billion centerpiece of the Gas Plant District redevelopment in St. Petersburg.

Messi, the World Cup champion and Inter Miami star in MLS, was held scoreless as Argentina suffered a 2-1 loss to Paraguay in a 2026 World Cup qualifying match on Thursday night.

Paraguay’s Antonio Sanabria scored a bicycle kick, while Omar Alderete opened the second half with the game-deciding goal – assisted by Messi’s Inter Miami teammate Diego Gomez.

Argentina’s Lautaro Martinez, the leading scorer from the club’s Copa America title run, scored the opening goal in the 11th minute for the reigning world champions. But they were unable to find the back of the net again Thursday.

Messi will play his final game of the year next Tuesday in Buenos Aires when Argentina hosts Peru in another World Cup qualifying match.

‘Peru will be a totally different rival, but it also has its difficulties. We are going to prepare well and hopefully we can give the people something to cheer about,’ Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni said after the match.

Messi riding a three-game losing streak

Messi has lost three straight matches for club and country, including Inter Miami’s losses in Games 2 and 3 of their first-round exit to Atlanta United in the MLS Cup Playoffs. His MLS season ended last Saturday.

It’s just the third time in Messi’s career he’s been on the losing side of three straight matches.

In 2014, Messi and Barcelona lost the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Atletico Madrid 1-0, a La Liga match against Granada 1-0, and the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid 2-1.

In April 2016, they lost a La Liga match against Real Sociedad 1-0, the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal to Atletico Madrid 2-0, and a La Liga match to Valencia 2-1.

Argentina loses for the second time this year

As for Argentina, it’s the second loss in the last four games, but just the fifth loss overall in 69 matches for the reigning World Cup champions and back-to-back Copa America winners.

The other losses in the run before Thursday’s defeat:

Argentina lost 2-0 to Brazil in the 2019 Copa America semifinals.
Argentina opened the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia on Nov. 22, 2022.
Argentina lost 2-0 to Uruguay in a World Cup qualifying match on Nov. 17, 2023.
Argentina lost 2-1 to Colombia in a Copa America final rematch on Sept. 10 in a game Messi did not play due to an ankle injury.

Messi confronts refs, Argentina still atop Conmebol standings

Messi fired a shot in the 25th minute inside the penalty area, which flew over the net into the stands after it was deflected by Gomez, the No. 1 player on the MLS 22 Under 22 this season.

Messi had an extended talk with three referees as the match went to halftime. He had reason to be upset, hitting the deck at least three times after tough challenges by Paraguayan defenders in the first half. The challenges did not result in any yellow cards.

Messi’s second half was also quiet despite his attempts to help Argentina tie the match.

‘We played well in the first half and the first action at the start of the second made things difficult,’ Scaloni said of Alderete’s game-deciding goal. ‘We have to congratulate our opponents who defended very well.’

Argentina still leads the Conmebol World Cup qualifying standings with 22 points, but could concede the lead Friday when Colombia (second with 19 points) visits Uruguay. Brazil is third with 17 points.

Paraguay improved to 16 points with the win, but is behind Uruguay and Ecuador in the standings. The top six teams in Conmebol will play in the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Check out these highlights from the match.

You have to see this highlight: Paraguay’s Antonio Sanabria scored on a beauty of a bicycle kick to tie this match in the 19th minute.

Lautaro Martinez goal: Argentina 1, Paraguay 0

Argentina’s Lautaro Martinez, the club’s leading scorer during its Copa America title run this summer, found the back of the net in the 11th minute to help his side take a 1-0 lead. Referees initially ruled Martinez offside on the play, but the goal was allowed following VAR.

Diego Gomez misses shot near net in 8’: Paraguay 0, Argentina 0

That includes Messi’s Argentina, Barcelona and Inter Miami jerseys (okay, maybe a few Paris Saint-Germain ones, too).

“We won’t allow the other team’s shirt. It’s not a problem against Messi. We respect the careers of all footballers. It’s just that the home ground is very important to us,’ Villasboa said at news conference on Wednesday.

President-elect Trump teased a ‘big’ announcement Thursday night, sharing that North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum will lead the Department of the Interior.

‘He’s going to be announced [Friday]…I look forward to doing the formal announcement, although this is a pretty big announcement right now, actually,’ Trump said during his speech at the Americans For Prosperity Gala at Mar-a-Lago on Thursday. ‘He’s going to head the Department of Interior, and he’s going to be fantastic.’

‘We’re going to reduce regulation waste, fraud and inefficiency,’ Trump said. ‘We’re going to clean out the corrupt, broken and failing bureaucracies. And we’re going to stop child sexual mutilation. We’re going to stop it because it’s time.’

Burgum, a multi-millionaire former software company CEO turned two-term governor, launched a White House bid in June 2023.

Bergum made energy and natural resources a key part of his campaign for the GOP nomination.

After making the stage at the first two GOP presidential debates, Burgum failed to qualify for the third showdown, in autumn of last year, and he dropped out of the White House race last December. A month later, he appeared in Iowa with Trump and endorsed the former president for the GOP nomination, days ahead of the first-in-the-nation caucuses.

Burgum became a high profile surrogate for the former president, appearing on the campaign trail and in media hits on Trump’s behalf.

He was in consideration as Trump’s running mate this past summer before Sen. JD Vance of Ohio was picked as the Republican Party’s vice presidential nominee.

Burgum, in an interview with ‘Fox and Friends’ last week, said Trump’s election victory was ‘game changing’ and that ‘we’ve got a new sheriff in town.’

The governor added that a Trump victory also ‘means that America is going to be dominant in energy.’

‘America is going to be dominant in energy which is key to all the diplomacy we do all over the world,’ he said.

The president of Argentina is the first foreign leader to meet in person with President-elect Trump since Trump’s win last week.

Javier Milei, known as ‘the Lion,’ has gained notoriety worldwide for his pro-market policies that have slashed Argentine inflation since he took elected office last year.

He attended the America First Policy Institute’s (AFPI) gala Thursday evening at Mar-a-Lago and will stay through the CPAC Investor Summit that ends Saturday.

President-elect Trump and President Milei met earlier Thursday, and the encounter ‘went well,’ according to an anonymous source via The Associated Press.

He posted to social media site X, sharing his plans with President-elect Trump for the week ahead, claiming he will be the only other president in attendance at the summit.

As Milei was ushered out the door to the AFPI gala Thursday, he told the Argentine outlet Clarion, ‘We’re going to plant the ideas of freedom high.’

During his address at the gala, Milei congratulated Trump on his resounding win through an interpreter, saying ‘this has been the greatest political comeback in history, defying the entire political establishment, even at the risk of his own life.’

He also thanked Elon Musk for his role boosting his social media site X for President-elect Trump and communication worldwide.

‘There is a silent or rather silent majority that has begun to make itself heard despite the enemies of freedom clinging to power through propaganda, distortion and censorship,’ said Milei. ‘And this is why I would especially like to thank the great Elon Musk for the wonderful job he has been doing to save humanity in communication around the world.’

The Argentine president then claimed that what happened in the U.S. elections last week is similar to his own election last year, with the ‘party of freedom’ taking a victory lap.

Milei is considered to be a Trump-like figure in South America, marketing black hats similar to red MAGA hats for fans labeled ‘las Fuerzas del Cielo’ or ‘the Forces from Heaven.’ He also famously wielded a chainsaw at a political rally, vowing to slash wasteful government spending.

‘I am exhilarated to be able to share with a new United States administration that same love for freedom. And I’m convinced that together we will restore it to the place it deserves,’ Milei said in his remarks.

President-elect Trump took the stage after Milei’s speech, thanking the Argentine president for his congratulations and commending his leadership.

‘And, Javier, I’d like to congratulate you on the job you’ve done for Argentina,’ said Trump. ‘Your speech was beautiful, but the job you’ve done is incredible. Make Argentina great again. You know MAGA. He’s a MAGA person. And you know he’s doing that. He’s actually. He’s actually doing that.

Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul predictions

Bermane Stiverne: Mike Tyson

DAZN reports that Striverne, a former WBC heavyweight champion, told Baccart.net: ‘I don’t think it will last more than six rounds. In the first half of the fight, the younger guy is going to come out to try and impose himself, but I see Mike working his body and dragging him into deep water from early on in the fight. Mike is a lot older, but he still has the ambition to fight and has bad intentions. He still hits the pads hard, looks great on the pads and it’s not like he fighting somebody who is a live opponent. Mike is taking this fight seriously and I don’t see in any way how he loses this fight against Jake Paul.”

Roy Jones Jr.: Mike Tyson

Roy Jones Jr., a former world champion in multiple divisions, tells talkSPORTS: ‘Well, I like Mike, probably by decision, but if he chooses to go out and take him out, I think he can.’

Tyson Fury: Mike Tyson

Former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury tells MMA Hour: ‘If Mike Tyson hits anybody, I don’t care if he’s 90, he’s going to knock them out cold isn’t he? He’s Iron Mike Tyson, the baddest man on the planet. Jake Paul is very experienced now and he’s had a lot of fights but obviously, I have to back Mike Tyson for the knockout as he always backs me.’

Bleacher Report: It’s going to be a circus

Lucky Ngamwajasat writes, ‘Give credit to Paul, Tyson and MVP Promotions for making me and many other fight fans tune in to this sideshow. And give credit to Paul for finding ways to keep us entertained while stacking the deck in his favor. Whether it was fighting former NBA player Nate Robinson or former UFC champions Tyrone Woodley and Anderson Silva, The Problem Child seemingly has had the advantage in all of these matchups. You want a prediction? Here’s mine: It’s going to be a circus and I’m going to watch it. I’m not going to take whatever happens seriously and neither should anyone who watches. But it should be fun, it’ll get people talking, and I’m sure it will lead to another mega-money fight for Paul down the line, perhaps a rematch.’

Sporting News: Jake Paul via TKO

Daniel Yanofsky writes, ‘If Tyson gets knocked down, which seems likely here, hopefully, he gets back up. The prediction: Paul pulls his punches a bit to give the crowd their money’s worth before forcing Tyson down. It will be a circus show either way, but a successful one, allowing Netflix, Paul, and Tyson to pat themselves on the back.’
