David French, the conservative New York Times contributor and longtime anti-Trumper, has a provocative take on why the president-elect won.

It’s the economy and the border, stupid.

‘I can’t help but think that if the withdrawal from Afghanistan hadn’t been a bloody mess (that’s when President Biden’s approval rating went underwater, and it never came back), if inflation hadn’t spiked and if migration hadn’t surged at the border, then we’d be having a different conversation.

‘I know that the Harris campaign had answers for all these criticisms. The American people wanted to end the Afghan war, and Biden was saddled with Trump’s terrible deal with the Taliban. Inflation was a global phenomenon, and it was unfair to entirely blame Biden when, by 2023, America had the lowest inflation rate among the Group of 7 countries. The Biden administration had finally cracked down on the border and had endorsed a tough new border bill.’

He adds that ‘they also rightly argued that Trump nostalgia was misplaced. It was wrong to give the former president a pass for the pandemic or for the chaos and murder spikes of 2020. His term did not end in 2019, with peace and prosperity. It ended near the beginning of 2021 with disease, violence and cultural decay. Even the memories of the time before Covid are idealized.’

So it was really Joe Biden who lost the election by letting inflation spiral – he was, in fairness, digging out of the pandemic – and turning the border into a free-for-all zone. He was also a terrible salesman for a series of bipartisan victories.

When his mental decline became obvious at the debate, and he stepped aside for Kamala Harris, she had to run on that record – and famously told ‘The View’ that she couldn’t think of a single thing where she differed with the president.

So the powerless Democrats may be more screwed than you think.

Given the party’s evolution from champion of the working class to representing the highly educated coastal elites in politics, academia and journalism, the Dems are left without a winning coalition they once took for granted.

In a Times news story, Jennifer Medina writes:

‘The working-class voters Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign needed were not moved by talk of joy. They were too angry about feeling broke.

‘The losses up and down the ballot leave Democrats in crisis. Voters without a college degree make up a solid majority of the electorate. Without them, the White House could be out of reach. And for a party that stands for and takes pride in its diversity, the erosion of support from voters of color calls its identity into question.’

What’s more, in interviewing hundreds of working-class minority voters, Medina found that ‘for many, hope had already hardened into cynicism. Promises about affordable housing fell flat and promoting accomplishments on insulin prices failed to break through. Simply put, their trust in the Democratic Party was gone.’

Now that brings us to Donald Trump’s self-proclaimed mandate, even if CNN was happy to report that Trump’s vote share had dropped slightly below 50% (Who cares? He’s the 47th president.)

Now comes news, first reported by ABC, that an unidentified hacker has obtained the sworn testimony of Matt Gaetz accusers from the House ethics probe and apparently plans to make it public.

The hacker accessed the file through a law firm involved in a civil suit against Joel Greenberg, a former Gaetz pal now serving an 11-year prison term for sex trafficking. The file includes testimony under oath by a woman who says she had sex with Gaetz when she was 17, back in 2017, and from another woman saying she witnessed the sexual encounter.

Asked for comment, Trump transition spokesman Alex Pfeiffer said: ‘Matt Gaetz will be the next attorney general. He’s the right man for the job and will end the weaponization of our justice system.

‘These are baseless allegations intended to derail the second Trump administration. The Biden Justice Department investigated Gaetz for years and cleared him of wrongdoing. The only people who went to prison over these allegations were those lying about Matt Gaetz.’

Trump is making calls on behalf of Gaetz, and J.D. Vance is escorting him and other nominees around the Hill.

The Times reports that Trump realizes that Gaetz may not be confirmed. This is a matter of simple math, since most GOP senators have not committed to supporting him. Yet the president-elect will not back off or force Gaetz to withdraw the nomination.

But if Gaetz falls short, it would be hard for the Senate to reject a replacement nominee, who might have the same views on disrupting and perhaps politicizing the DOJ, but without the ex-congressman’s baggage.

The House ethics panel, while stymied by Gaetz’s abrupt resignation, is meeting today on the report.

One new disclosure that could hurt him: Gaetz used his adopted son’s PayPal account to pay one of the women, who was not a minor. Doesn’t that sound like someone with something embarrassing to hide?

The Democrats have some influence in this process, as they’d only have to pick off four of the 53 GOP senators to block Matt Gaetz. But they are also consumed by their election shellacking and will have a hard time defeating Trump on just about anything.

Kam Jones etched himself in Marquette men’s basketball lore.

The senior guard notched just the third triple-double in program history, and the Golden Eagles put on a defensive clinic in a 76-58 victory over sixth-ranked Purdue on Tuesday at Fiserv Forum.

MU (5-0) is ranked 14th in the USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll.

Jones finished with 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists.

Dwyane Wade had the the last triple-double for MU, famously coming in the 2003 Elite Eight against Kentucky. Tony Miller also had one in 1994.

MU’s harassing defense also frustrated Purdue (4-1).

The Boilermakers had 15 turnovers, including 11 steals by the Golden Eagles.

Stevie Mitchell added 21 and four steals for MU. Chase Ross also had four steals.

An Italian village is offering a special deal to Americans looking for a reprieve following President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory by offering homes for as little as 1 Euro.

Located in the countryside of Sardinia, Italy, the ancient town of Ollolai recently launched a ‘Live in Ollolai’ initiative offering the special deal in a bid to attract Americans seeking refuge following Trump’s win against Vice President Kamala Harris.

The rural community released a statement on its website saying: ‘Are you worn out by global politics? Looking to embrace a more balanced lifestyle while securing new opportunities? It’s time to start building your European escape in the stunning paradise of Sardinia.’

‘Ollolai is the perfect destination to reconnect, recharge, and embrace a new way of life,’ the website said.

The village promises to be ‘surrounded by incredible cuisine’ while being ‘immersed in a community with ancient traditions.’

When searching for their new home, Americans can either choose a space to renovate or spend a bit more to receive one that’s move-in-ready.

The website noted that move-in ready homes are priced at up to 100,000 euros while some homes in need of updates are being sold for a single euro.

Mayor Francesco Columbo told CNN that the city created the bargain to ‘meet U.S. post-election relocation needs.’

‘Of course, we can’t specifically mention the name of one U.S. president who just got elected, but we all know that he’s the one from whom many Americans want to get away from now and leave the country,’ he said.

‘We have specifically created this website now to meet U.S. post-election relocation needs,’ he said.

It took a few days, but Oregon has officially clinched a spot in the Big Ten championship game, effectively securing a College Football Playoff bid.

The Big Ten confirmed on Tuesday — three days after the Ducks’ 16-13 win over Wisconsin — that Oregon would indeed make the conference title game in all 10 possible outcomes, based on the conference’s extensive tiebreaker rules.

And, as it turns out, the Big Ten’s math was wrong when it told The Oregonian on Monday that the Ducks needed Ohio State to lose vs. Indiana and Penn State to lose vs. Minnesota to clinch a conference championship berth. However, the conference’s announcement noted that Oregon will stay as the conference’s No. 1 or 2 seed in every outcome, based on tiebreakers.

‘Following a comprehensive evaluation of all possible scenarios over the final two weeks of regular season play across the conference’s 18 teams, there are no conditions whereby the Ducks do not finish No. 1 or No. 2. A list of those scenarios can be found here,’ the Big Ten’s announcement read.

It seems as if conferences are also re-learning championship game tiebreaker scenarios after the latest batch of league realignment.

Conference tiebreakers are going to take some getting used to for some of college football’s top leagues, as, for example, the expanded Big Ten and SEC are seeing numerous teams in conference championship contention with only two weeks left in the regular season.

The SEC still has six teams vying for a spot in the conference title game, whereas the Big Ten has Oregon and Indiana — who are both undefeated in conference play — and Ohio State and Penn State, who both have one conference loss, respectively.

The Big Ten and SEC effectively ended divisions for the 2024 season after the Big Ten added Oregon, Washington, UCLA and USC. The SEC added Oklahoma and Texas.

That makes for some potentially complicated tiebreaker scenarios, as Oregon and the Big Ten have discovered firsthand.

The Los Angeles Sparks have a new head coach.

The Sparks named Utah women’s basketball coach Lynne Roberts as their next head coach, succeeding Curt Miller, who mutually parted ways with the franchise in September after leading Los Angeles to a 25–55 record in two seasons.

“I am honored to be named the next head coach of the Los Angeles Sparks,” Roberts said in a statement on Tuesday. “The Sparks have a talented roster with tremendous upside, and we will compete tirelessly for WNBA championships. I believe Los Angeles should be the premier market in the WNBA, and I’m eager to partner with our players and front office to make this happen.”

Roberts boasts a decades-long resume as a collegiate women’s basketball head coach. She spent the past nine seasons at the helm of Utah’s basketball program and led the Utes to three straight NCAA tournament berths, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2023, when she was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year. Roberts has also served as a head coach at Chico State (2002-06) and Pacific (2006-15), with a total collegiate head coaching record of 383-290.

“Lynne is an outstanding coach and leader,” Sparks Governor and Managing Partner Eric Holoman said in a statement. “We are thrilled to bring her decades of winning coaching experience to our organization. Through our comprehensive international search, Lynne’s modern view of basketball, her communication skills, and ability to build relationships made her the right choice for the role.”

The Sparks are relying on Roberts to guide the team back to the postseason. Los Angeles last won a WNBA championship in 2016 and have missed the playoffs the past three seasons with a dismal record of 38-78.

The Sparks have the No. 2 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft. Los Angeles previously drafted Cameron Brink (Stanford) and WNBA All-rookie Rickea Jackson (Tennessee) with the No. 2 and No. 4 overall picks of the 2024 WNBA draft, respectively. Brink suffered a torn ACL in June, but is expected to return for the 2025 WNBA season.

Colorado football coach Deion Sanders is one of college football’s most popular head coaches.

Because of that, plus the impressive season that the 18th-ranked Buffaloes are currently having, Sanders’ name has been linked to several head coaching jobs in the NFL — specifically, with one of his former teams: the Dallas Cowboys.

During his news conference on Tuesday, Sanders was once again asked about the rumors. He shut them down by saying he loves being in Colorado, and leading the Buffaloes.

‘I’m happy where I am, man,’ Sanders said. ‘I’ve got a kickstand down. You know what a kickstand is? … That means I’m resting. I’m good, I’m happy, I’m excited. I’m enthusiastic about where I am. I love it here, truly do.’

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

He added: ‘We ain’t going nowhere. We’re about to get comfortable.’

Though the Cowboys job hasn’t opened up yet (Mike McCarthy is still in charge of the sidelines in Dallas), those in NFL circles have wondered aloud whether Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will make a change after the season. This has created the conversation on whether Sanders would entertain taking the job, should it open and be offered to him.

Sanders’ comments Tuesday also come a few days after The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported any talk of Sanders leaving Colorado for Dallas is ‘chitchat.’

Earlier Tuesday, Sanders’ former Cowboys teammate Michael Irvin appeared on Fox Sports’ ‘The Herd with Colin Cowherd,’ where he said he believes Sanders would take the Cowboys job — if Dallas drafted Shedeur Sanders.

In USA Today’s Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz’s latest NFL mock draft last week, the Buffaloes’ quarterback was projected to go No. 2 overall to the New York Giants. Dallas currently owns the No. 9 pick in this year’s NFL draft at 3-7 overall.

‘I believe 100% and I can tell you, good sources have told me that,’ Irvin said Tuesday. ‘Great sources have told me that. That’s all I can say like that without violating anything else.’

In two seasons at Colorado, Deion Sanders has led the Buffaloes to a 12-10 overall record. This season, led by Shedeur Sanders and two-way star player Travis Hunter, Deion Sanders has helped Colorado become bowl-eligible for the first time in a non-COVID condensed season since 2016.

Philadelphia 76ers All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey called out teammate Joel Embiid for his tardiness in a team meeting after the 76ers lost to the Miami Heat Monday, a person with knowledge of the meeting told USA TODAY Sports.

The person requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about what was said.

The person said Maxey and Embiid have great respect for each other, the comment was rooted in care and what’s best for the team. Maxey called for Embiid to be a better leader, but there is no animosity between the two players, the person said.

The Sixers are reeling amid a 2-11 start and have lost four consecutive games and nine of their past 10. They are tied with Washington for the NBA’s worst record and were fined $100,000 for ‘public statements, including by president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and head coach Nick Nurse, that were inconsistent with Embiid’s health status and in violation of NBA rules, including the league’s Player Participation Policy.’

Embiid has played in just three games, Maxey is out with an injury and offseason acquisition Paul George is off to a poor start after dealing with an injury to open the season. Those three were supposed to be the centerpieces of a championship-caliber team, but they have not played a game together this season.

Embiid, the 2022-23 MVP, missed Philadelphia’s first six games with a left knee issue, was suspended without pay for shoving a reporter in the locker room and has not looked good in the three games he has played, averaging 14.7 points and 6.3 rebounds and shooting 32.4% from the field.

The Sixers have several new players, including George, who signed a four-year, $211.5 million deal with Philadelphia in free agency in the offseason, Caleb Martin, Eric Gordon, Andre Drummond, Reggie Jackson, Guerschon Yabusele and rookie Jared McCain.

They were expected to compete with Boston for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. If there’s a positive, it’s that after Cleveland and Boston at the top of the East, teams are bunched, and Philadelphia is just four games behind fifth-place Atlanta.

There’s time for the Sixers to get healthy and turn their season around. But clearly, there is plenty of work to do.

ESPN first reported the details of the team meeting.

The fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul was a one-of-a-kind spectacle. Viewership reflects that.

Netflix revealed on Tuesday that Friday’s live boxing event between Tyson and Paul drew in 108 million viewers globally, making it the ‘most-streamed sporting event ever.’ Netflix’s live broadcast from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas peaked at 65 million concurrent households in the U.S and an estimated 56% of all TV viewership in the country was tuned into the Tyson-Paul fight between 12 a.m. to 1 a.m. ET, the streaming service added.

The co-main event, a rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, drew in 74 million live viewers globally to become ‘the most-watched professional women’s sports event in U.S. history,’ Netflix added.

Tens of millions of followers tuned in to see Paul defeat Tyson by unanimous decision on Friday. The live broadcast marked the No. 1 title on Netflix, not only in the U.S, but 78 total countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, India, Italy, Mexico and South Africa.

The live broadcast was not a complete success, despite the record-setting viewership. Some Netflix users expressed their frustration across social media over technical difficulties, including buffering, screen quality concerns and audio issues.

These are issues Netflix will look to improve as they continue with their live sporting lineup. The platform is set to stream an NFL doubleheader on Christmas Day: Kansas City Chiefs at Pittsburgh Steelers, followed by Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans, which will feature a half-time performance from Beyoncé.

The places at the top of the College Football Playoff rankings, as expected, did not change in this week’s release by the committee Tuesday.

No. 1 Oregon maintained its position and was followed by Ohio State for the third consecutive week. Texas held firm at No. 3 with Penn State and Indiana coming next, giving the Big Ten four of the top five teams for the second consecutive rankings.

Where there was mystery was in the second half of the top 10 after No. 6 Brigham Young and No. 7 Tennessee both lost in Week 12. Notre Dame moved to sixth, while Alabama leapfrogged Miami and moved into the No. 7 spot ahead of the Hurricanes. Mississippi and Georgia round out the top 10 with the Volunteers falling to No. 11.

BYU slipped eight places to No. 14, behind Mountain West leader Boise State. The Broncos check in at No. 12 and are higher than all the other Big 12 schools, meaning they could be in line for a first-place bye given to the four highest-rated conference champions. The other Big 12 schools in the rankings are No. 16 Colorado, No. 21 Arizona State and No. 22 Iowa State.

Lionel Messi had his head down, dribbling down the left side, like he knew he had a teammate wide open to his right.

Messi sent a pass into the middle of the penalty area, and Lautaro Martinez elevated his left leg to strike the assist home in the 55th minute of Argentina’s 1-0 win over Peru on Tuesday night at La Bombonera in Buenos Aires.

With the assist, Messi tied U.S. Men’s National Team legend Landon Donovan for the most international assists in men’s soccer history. They each have 58 assists.

The 2026 World Cup qualifying match was also the final game for Messi in 2024, capping what he called “another unforgettable year.’

During the Copa America final against Colombia on July 14, Martinez’s goal in extra time secured the title with Messi injured on the bench.

On Tuesday night, Messi helped Martinez score his 35 national team goal to tie the great Diego Maradona for fifth place in Argentina history.

Messi hasn’t publicly committed to playing in the next World Cup, but he’s still eager as ever to play with the national team at this stage of his career.

Argentina has now won 65 of its last 70 games — after entering the match having lost two of its previous four games.

“Everyone wants to beat us. The Argentine national team is always the protagonist,” Martinez said after the game. “There are things to improve, but we have to continue on this path.”

What’s next for Messi?

Messi and Argentina won their second straight Copa America title this summer, cementing themselves as one of soccer’s greatest dynasties — their run highlighted by their victory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Messi also had a historic season in Major League Soccer as an MVP finalist, leading Inter Miami to the Supporters’ Shield title and the best regular season in league history. However, Messi’s offseason is off to an early start, and he needs a new coach next season.

Inter Miami coach Tata Martino, who also coached Messi with Argentina and FC Barcelona, resigned from his post due to personal reasons, a source told USA TODAY Sports earlier Tuesday.

ALEXI LALAS: Inter Miami’s playoff failure sets stage for Messi’s last act

Inter Miami was eliminated in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs, losing a best-of-three series to Atlanta United earlier this month. The postseason continues with the conference semifinals this weekend.

Messi scored only one goal over the first three MLS postseason games of his career, a disappointing mark after he notched two hat tricks in a week before the playoffs. Messi scored three goals with two assists in Argentina’s 6-0 win against Bolivia on Oct. 15, and had three goals and an assist in Inter Miami’s season finale on Oct. 19 to help Miami set the MLS points record (74).

It was clear Messi had returned to form after a two-month layoff due to the right ankle injury he suffered in the Copa America final. He scored only one goal and played in five of six games in the tournament, missing a match with a groin discomfort.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR MESSI? Messi in store for busy 2025-26

While Messi was sidelined after Copa America, Inter Miami won eight of nine regular season games to seize first place in the MLS Eastern Conference. But the club was unable to defend its Leagues Cup title it won seven games after Messi’s arrival in July 2023. Inter Miami was eliminated by the Columbus Crew during the Leagues Cup round-of-16 this year. It was eliminated by LIGA MX powerhouse Monterrey in the Concacaf Champions Cup quarterfinals earlier this year.

Messi finished the MLS season with 20 goals and 16 assists, leading the league with 36 goal contributions. He played in 19 of 34 MLS games this year.

Next year, Messi and Inter Miami will have a chance to compete for five trophies. They’ll participate in the Concacaf Champions Cup, Club World Cup, Leagues Cup and compete again for the MLS Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup title.

Messi ended his year on a high note Tuesday with Argentina’s win. He entered the match on a personal three-game losing streak after Argentina lost 2-1 to Paraguay last week and Inter Miami dropped its final two games to Atlanta United.

TRUMP DANCE: Christian Pulisic does viral sports celebration after USMNT goal

Argentina leads the Conmebol World Cup qualifying rankings, and will likely maintain the No. 1 spot in the FIFA rankings, heading into next year when the club will likely clinch its spot in the 2026 World Cup.

Messi is on the last ride of his legendary career. He is under contract with Inter Miami through 2025. He’ll be 38 years old next June, and will turn 39 during the next World Cup.

Argentina vs. Peru highlights

Messi’s Inter Miami coach steps down

Inter Miami coach Tata Martino resigned Tuesday, a person with direct knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports. The person spoke under the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the news.

The move is a sour ending to Martino’s run as Inter Miami coach after a historic season, during which the club won the MLS Supporters’ Shield but was bounced in the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs earlier this month.

Messi is on a 3-game losing streak

Messi is riding a personal three-game losing streak: Argentina lost 2-1 to Paraguay last week, and Inter Miami dropped its final two games of its first-round series to Atlanta United in the MLS Cup playoffs earlier this month.

It’s just the third three-game skid of Messi’s career.

In April 2014, Messi and Barcelona lost the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal against Atletico Madrid 1-0, a La Liga match against Granada 1-0, and the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid 2-1.

In April 2016, Messi and Barcelona lost a La Liga match against Real Sociedad 1-0, the second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal to Atletico Madrid 2-0, and a La Liga match to Valencia 2-1.

Argentina’s run atop international soccer

Argentina would maintain the No. 1 FIFA ranking with a win vs. Peru on Tuesday night. It’s on an incredible run, winning 64 of its last 69 games.

Argentina leads the Conmebol World Cup qualifying rankings, and will likely clinch its spot in the 2026 World Cup early next year.

MLS playoffs continue without Messi this weekend

Messi, however, was unable to help Inter Miami advance to the second round of the MLS Cup playoffs.

The MLS postseason continues Saturday as New York City FC hosts the New York Red Bulls at 5:30 p.m. ET, then LAFC hosts Seattle Sounders FC at 10:30 p.m. ET

On Sunday, Orlando City SC hosts Atlanta United at 3:30 p.m. ET, followed by the L.A. Galaxy hosting Minnesota United FC at 6 p.m. ET.

All four matches will be available via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV.
