Two U.S. officials confirmed to Fox News Thursday that a Russian ‘experimental intermediate-range ballistic missile’ (IRBM) launched at Ukraine was not hypersonic.

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed the attack Thursday evening in an address to the nation and said it was in direct response to the U.S. and the U.K. jointly approving Ukraine’s use of Western-supplied long-range missiles to target Russia.

Putin and U.S. sources have since confirmed the strike was not an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), but the Kremlin chief also claimed the weapon used poses a significant challenge for Western nations.

Deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh confirmed to reporters during a press briefing Thursday that Russia had launched an IRBM based on one of Russia’s ICBM models. She sometimes called the IRBM ‘experimental,’ explaining it was the first time the missile had been used on the battlefield.

‘This was a new type of lethal capability that was employed on the battlefield, so that’s certainly a concern to us,’ Singh said.

She also said the U.S. was notified briefly before the launch through nuclear or risk reduction channels.

Still, Singh told reporters the Department of Defense has not seen any adjustment in Russia’s nuclear posture, nor has the U.S. made any changes to its own.

Putin said, according to a translation, that the missile attacked targets at a speed of Mach 10.

‘That’s 2.5 miles per second,’ Putin said. ‘The world’s current air defense systems and the missile defense systems developed by the Americans in Europe do not intercept such missiles.’

Despite Putin’s claim, two U.S. defense officials told Fox News the missile was not hypersonic, which, according to NASA, is a speed greater than 3,000 mph and faster than Mach 5.

Singh told reporters the only escalation in the war between Russia and Ukraine is that the former invaded a sovereign border country and turned to North Korea to bring about 11,000 soldiers to fight against Ukraine.

Following President Biden’s position reversal this week to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) against the Russian homeland, Kyiv immediately levied strikes against a military arsenal in the Russian region of Bryansk, more than 70 miles from Ukraine’s border.

While Ukrainian troops officially fired the sophisticated missiles, the weapons system still relies on U.S. satellites to hit its target, an issue Putin touched on in his unannounced speech Thursday.

‘We are testing the Oreshnik missile systems in combat conditions in response to NATO countries’ aggressive actions against Russia. We will decide on the further deployment of intermediate-range and shorter-range missiles depending on the actions of the U.S. and its satellites,’ he said.

Putin claimed Russia will alert Ukrainian citizens of an impending attack like the strike he carried out on Thursday, though it remains unclear if he issued a warning to the Ukrainians living in Dnipro.

The Kremlin chief said the ‘defense industry’ was targeted, though images released by the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense showed what appeared to be civilian infrastructure caught in the fray.

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid sounded off Wednesday night about details of a team meeting being publicly disclosed, saying, “Whoever leaked that is a real piece of (expletive).”

After the Sixers fell to an NBA-worst 2-12, reporters asked Embiid about the Monday night meeting during which All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey called out Embiid for tardiness.

“We talked about a lot of things,” Embiid said, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I don’t want to get into the details, but that whole thing (with Maxey) probably took 30 seconds. But then again, it’s Joel Embiid, so we’ve got to make everything blown out of proportion.

“It’s whatever. I’ll take it all. I’m the reason for everything, so I’ll take the blame for everything.”

The start of the season has been frustrating for the 76ers. Embiid and offseason addition Paul George both missed several games with knee injuries and then Maxey missed time with a hamstring issue.

But there was an issue with the team’s reporting of Embiid’s injury. The Sixers were fined $100,000 for violating the league’s player participation policy. The league concluded Embiid has a “left knee condition,” an indication that the Sixers had not been forthright about the status of Embiid’s knee.

Wednesday night’s loss to the Memphis Grizzlies marked the first time that Embiid, Maxey and George each started in the same game. By the third quarter, George had left with a hyperextended left knee, the same injury that caused him to miss time at the start of the season.

Embiid recorded season highs in minutes played (35:04), points (35) and rebounds (11) in Wednesday’s game.

On Nov. 5, the NBA suspended Embiid three games for shoving a media member over Embiid’s displeasure with a column the person wrote. The column was critical of Embiid and referenced Embiid’s brother Arthur, who died in 2014, and Embiid’s son Arthur.

Previously, Embiid had held a press conference in October in which he lashed out at critics who said he was ducking playing time. “I’ve done way too much for this (expletive) city, putting myself at risk, for people to be saying that,” he said.

The 76ers are already 12.5 games out of first place in the Eastern Conference, though they are just four in back of the No. 6 seed, the last spot with a guaranteed playoff berth.

“It’s kind of annoying having to deal with the same things over and over and over,” Embiid said Wednesday of the coverage he gets. “It’s been like that my whole career. All I try to do is focus on basketball, and trying to make the best living for my family, on and off the court.

“But it’s unbelievable. It just feels like negativity keeps following us, which I don’t understand why. But it is a shame, but it doesn’t change the fact that we’ve still all got to be better.”

Embiid stressed Wednesday that he holds no ill will toward Maxey and vowed to improve.

“That’s the relationship we have — nothing malicious,” Embiid said. “I like when people are telling me what I’m not doing good, what I need to do better. Even though (the tardiness) maybe happened once or twice, when I wasn’t playing.

“So I need to be better. I need to be perfect. I need to be on point, which I’m going to do. Which I’ve always done.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers smelled blood in the water.

Down 5-0 in Game 5 of the World Series, the Dodgers capitalized on several Yankee blunders in the fateful fifth inning to tie the game and eventually win 7-6 to clinch the franchise’s eighth championship.

“Everybody saw it. We’re all thinking it: (The Yankees) kind of (expletive) down their leg,’ Dodgers utilityman Chris Taylor said.

Outfielder Mookie Betts hosted a roundtable on his podcast following the team’s celebration in Los Angeles, with other Dodgers players agreeing that the vibes shifted and victory seemed a foregone conclusion once the chaos began to unfold.

“You could feel the energy shift in the stadium,’ Max Muncy said. “It was almost like those fans were waiting for something bad to happen … When all that started unfolding, I could just feel it. We’re about to take over this game.”

DODGERS WIN WORLD SERIES: Celebrate with this commemorative coffee table book!

Enrique Hernandez led off the inning with a single, then Yankees center fielder Aaron Judge dropped a fly ball to put Tommy Edman on base. Will Smith hit a grounder to short, with Anthony Volpe making New York’s second error of the inning to load the bases. With two outs, Betts drove in a run on an infield single with some help from a mental error by pitcher Gerrit Cole, who failed to cover first. That opened the floodgates in the Bronx, with Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez following Betts with two-RBI hits to tie the game.

Said Taylor, drink in hand: ‘They were pressing. It was like one thing after the next … our energy in the dugout was kind of feeding off that. It was like ‘all we got to do is put the ball in play.”

Veterans and champions before, Betts and World Series MVP Freddie Freeman praised the team’s togetherness as the deciding factor, with players sacrificing throughout the postseason to attend every workout and team dinner.

‘The best thing from my perspective? After we won the World Series, we were so together we all said, ‘(Expletive) it,’ we’re just going to argue with our wives so we can ride back (from New York) together,’ Betts joked.

‘That’s dope. That’s why we won the World Series.’

The afternoon turnaround seems to be more the norm than the exception. Thursday’s stock market action followed the trend. What makes Thursday’s turnaround more pronounced is a possible resumption of the uptrend in equities. But not all stocks are created equal.

A look at the day’s MarketCarpet of the S&P 500 stocks shows an interesting mix. While there was more green than red, some of the heavier-weighted S&P 500 stocks—Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Apple, Inc. (AAPL), Alphabet, Inc. (GOOGL), Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), Meta Platforms, Inc. (META), and Tesla, Inc. (TSLA)—were trading lower. NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA) managed to eke out a slightly higher close despite its sharp drop after reporting earnings after Wednesday’s close. Earnings and revenues beat expectations, but the market may have had higher expectations. NVDA’s 0.53% gain didn’t move the needle much in Thursday’s positive move.

An initial glance at the MarketCarpet screams the need to view the chart of the S&P 500 Equal Weighted Index ($SPXEW).

Technical Support Holds

Comparing the chart of $SPX with $SPXEW shows that the latter made a bigger move on Thursday. Regardless, both indexes bounced above their 25-day simple moving averages (SMAs).

FIGURE 2. S&P 500 VS. S&P 500 EQUAL-WEIGHTED INDEX. The S&P 500 rebounded and closed higher toward the top end of the day’s range. Most of the heavily weighted stocks in the index closed lower, so it’s no surprise that the S&P 500 Equal-Weighted Index made a more significant move.Chart source: StockChartsACP. For educational purposes.

The positive slope of both indicates the uptrend is still in play. Both are close to their 52-week highs (see lower panel). The $SPXEW is only 0.54% from its high whereas the $SPX is 0.88% away.

It’s a similar scenario with the Nasdaq Composite ($COMPQ) and Nasdaq 100 Equal-Weighted Index ($NDXE), although Thursday’s upside move was much smaller than that of the S&P 500 (see chart below).

FIGURE 3: NASDAQ COMPOSITE VS. NASDAQ 100 EQUAL-WEIGHTED INDEX. Both indexes are above their 25-day SMAs, which have a positive slope. Both are also close to their all-time highs.Chart source: StockChartsACP. For educational purposes.

$COMPQ and $NDXE are trending higher (their 25-day SMAs are trending higher), but the last bar in $NDXE shows more upside movement. Both indexes are approaching their 52-week highs—$COMPQ is 1.72% away, while $NDXE is 0.99% away.

The Nasdaq Composite chart shows some selling pressure, but it’s trading above its July high. If it maintains that position, going forward, it will be bullish for the index.

Even though the Dow Jones Industrial Average ($INDU) may not be as popular as it once was, it, out of the three major equity indexes, rose the most, closing up by 1.06%. It, too, had a turnaround day, bouncing off its 25-day SMA on Tuesday, and is also approaching an all-time high.

The biggest winners were small and mid-caps. The S&P 400 Mid Cap Index ($MID) and S&P 600 Small Cap Index ($SML) are both above their November lows and approaching their all-time highs (see chart below).

FIGURE 4. MID CAPS VS. SMALL CAPS. Both indexes had significant moves on Thursday. The trend continues to be bullish and both are approaching their all-time highs.Chart source: StockChartsACP. For educational purposes.

The Extended Factors Dashboard panel shows the mid-cap revenue and momentum ETFs were Thursday’s top percentage movers.

FIGURE 5. EXTENDED FACTORS DASHBOARD PANEL. Mid-cap revenue and momentum were the largest percentage winners on Thursday.Image source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

The big-picture view of the equity markets: After the post-election pullback, equities seem to be making a comeback. The big question is whether they will have the momentum to break above their all-time highs.

The Bond Market’s Narrative

While equities are rising, you can’t ignore what’s happening in the bond market. Treasury yields are climbing in tandem with equities. This is mainly due to strong economic growth and concerns of possible inflation with the new administration’s implementation of tariffs and tax cuts. We’ve already heard the CEO of Walmart chime in with his concerns about consumers having to pay more due to tariffs.

As yields rise, bond prices fall. The daily chart of the iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) below shows that since September 17, TLT has fallen over 12%. That was around the time the Federal Reserve announced a 50 basis point interest rate cut.

FIGURE 6. DAILY CHART OF TLT. TLT fell over 12% since September 17, which is around the time the Fed cut interest rates by 50 basis points.Image source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

Closing Bell

While the macroeconomic picture is positive, investors are concerned about the possibility of reinflation, especially if tariffs are implemented. We’re still a few months away from January 20, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see more choppiness in the stock and bond market from now until the end of the year.

Geopolitical tensions could also rise. If the trend in equities continues to be bullish, just stay your course and hold on to your positions. But if there’s any change, such as a negative slope in your preferred moving average or a decline in market breadth, it may be time to unload some of your positions and have some cash sitting on the sidelines.

Today the 20-Year Bond ETF (TLT) 50-day EMA crossed down through the 200-day EMA (Death Cross), generating an LT Trend Model SELL Signal. This was the result of a down trend lasting over two months. We note that the PMO has been running flat below the zero line for a month, which tells us that steady downward pressure has been applied to price.

On the weekly chart we observe a bullish reverse head and shoulders pattern, which executed when price broke above the neckline and rallied for a couple of weeks. Next it performed a technical pullback to the support line. If the support fails, the pattern will abort, and we will assume a bearish outlook in this time frame.

We have been watching this 46-year monthly chart of the 30-Year Bond for a few years now. An extremely long-term (40-year) rising trend line was violated in 2022. At the time we asserted that bonds had turned bearish and that condition would most likely persist for many years. We have not changed our outlook. There may be encouraging rallies from time to time, but we believe they will fail.

Conclusion: The LT Trend Model SELL Signal was triggered by a persistent two-month decline. In the longer-term, bonds appear to be attempting a rally. Our outlook is bearish, but we need to see how far the rally can go. In any case, we believe the ultimate outcome will be bearish.

The Pittsburgh Steelers (8-2) and Cleveland Browns (2-8) are set to clash on ‘Thursday Night Football’ to kick off Week 12. The Steelers lead the AFC North and are riding a five-game winning streak. Meanwhile, the Browns have lost two in a row and are looking to play spoiler in arguably the most fiercely contested division in the NFL.

Although the Steelers offense failed to score a touchdown in Sunday’s 18-16 win over the Ravens, the defense led the way in the victory. They held reigning MVP – and 2024 MVP candidate – Lamar Jackson to just 207 passing yards and 46 rushing yards.

The Browns will start Jameis Winston at quarterback for the fourth straight week. The former No. 1 overall pick has performed well since Deshaun Watson’s season-ending Achilles injury. In Sunday’s 35-14 loss to the Saints, he completed 30 of 46 passes (65.2%) for 395 yards and two touchdowns.

USA TODAY Sports will provide updates heading into and throughout Thursday night’s Browns vs. Steelers game.

Week 12 of the 2024 NFL season is a light one, six teams on bye weeks. It’s also not exactly frontloaded, Thursday’s Pittsburgh Steelers-Cleveland Browns matchup offering little intrigue aside from the hope division rivalries tend to produce compelling football.

But the drama should pick up late Sunday afternoon, when the San Francisco 49ers, badly in need of a win, visit the Green Bay Packers. The Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks will also rumble, vying for first place in the NFC West.

But there’s little doubt that the game of the week will be staged Monday night in Los Angeles, when the Chargers host the Baltimore Ravens in the latest clash of head coaching brothers Jim and John Harbaugh, respectively. Both teams seem solidly entrenched as AFC wild-card entries, but one will see its prospects damaged in a meeting of franchises that now seem quite similar philosophically.

Here’s how our football experts foresee the outcomes:

Daniel Jones spoke to reporters after Thursday’s practice for the first time since the New York Giants benched him in favor of third-string quarterback Tommy DeVito.

Jones walked up to the podium and greeted reporters by letting them know he had something to say.

‘I wrote this down just to make sure I say it the right way,’ Jones told reporters.

The veteran quarterback went on to address his six years with the Giants and what the future might hold for him after his benching.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Notably, Jones began the statement discussing his time playing for the Giants in the past tense.

‘The opportunity to play for the New York Giants was truly a dream come true,’ Jones said. ‘I am extremely grateful to the Mara and Tisch families for the chance to play here. The Giants are truly a first-class organization and I have nothing but genuine respect and appreciation for the people who have built it and have carried on its traditions.’

Jones went on to thanks his teammates and coaches from his six-year tenure with the Giants. He also thanked the fans, saying their passion was ‘a huge part of what makes playing for the Giants so special.’

After that, Jones got into the meat of his speech. He addressed his benching and shouldered the blame for failing to live up to expectations after inking a four-year, $160 million extension with the team.

‘There have been some great times, but we all wish there had been more of those,’ Jones said of his Giants tenure. ‘I take full responsibility for my part in not bringing more wins. Nobody wanted to win more games worse than me, and I gave everything I had on the field in my preparation.’

‘Of course this season has been disappointing for all, and of course I wish I could have done more,’ he added. ‘I’m 100% accountable for my part. I did not play well enough consistently enough to get the team results.’

Jones also said that he understood the team’s decision to bench him. He knows that he played a big role in the team seeking a change but also didn’t let himself get discouraged about his future opportunities.

‘I love the game. I love being part of a team,’ Jones said. ‘I’m excited for the next opportunity and know that there’s a lot of good football in front of me. I’m excited about that.’

That certainly doesn’t sound like a player who believes he will be back with the Giants in 2025. It can be safely assumed that New York will release him during the offseason, so the only question now is whether he will remain with the team through the end of the season.

Will the Giants release Daniel Jones?

New York isn’t likely to release Jones before the end of the 2024 NFL season, but the Giants have demoted him to fourth on their quarterback depth chart. DeVito is set to start with Drew Lock backing him up. Meanwhile, the recently signed Tim Boyle was working ahead of Jones in practice, with the long-time Giants starter seeing some scout team work.

That may not be the massive indictment of Jones’ talent that it seems to be. In reality, the Giants are simply benching Jones to avoid paying him a $23 million sum that would become guaranteed if he is injured while playing for the team. That would impact New York’s ability to release him, so demoting Jones to the fourth-string is a sensible financial decision.

But will Jones stick around with that being his role for the rest of the Giants’ lost season? Only time will tell. We have seen teams like the Las Vegas Raiders let veteran quarterback Derek Carr step away from the team when benched.

Could Jones be given the same opportunity by the Giants? It’s possible. But given that Jones stated his love for both the Giants and for football, he might be willing to take the fourth-string role in stride while sharpening his skills as he plans to hit the open market during the offseason.

President-elect Trump announced Thursday evening that he’s nominating a former attorney general of Florida as the next attorney general of the United States.

Trump’s latest Cabinet pick replaces Matt Gaetz, the former Florida representative and nominee for attorney general, who on Thursday withdrew as Trump’s pick for the top prosecutor after the ‘distraction’ his nomination had caused due to a swirl of allegations about paying underage women for sex.

‘Pam was a prosecutor for nearly 20 years, where she was very tough on Violent Criminals, and made the streets safe for Florida Families,’ Trump wrote in his announcement. ‘Then, as Florida’s first female Attorney General, she worked to stop the trafficking of deadly drugs, and reduce the tragedy of Fentanyl Overdose Deaths, which have destroyed many families across our Country. She did such an incredible job, that I asked her to serve on our Opioid and Drug Abuse Commission during my first Term — We saved many lives!

‘For too long, the partisan Department of Justice has been weaponized against me and other Republicans – Not anymore. Pam will refocus the DOJ to its intended purpose of fighting Crime, and Making America Safe Again,’ he continued. ‘I have known Pam for many years — She is smart and tough, and is an AMERICA FIRST Fighter, who will do a terrific job as Attorney General!’

Pennsylvania Democrat Sen. Bob Casey on Thursday announced he has conceded the race to Republican candidate Dave McCormick, putting an end to a lengthy automatic recount in the Keystone State more than two weeks after Election Day.

Casey said in a statement that he called McCormick to congratulate him. McCormick’s campaign also independently confirmed the news to Fox News Digital.

‘I just called Dave McCormick to congratulate him on his election to represent Pennsylvania in the United States Senate,’ Casey said in the statement. ‘As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last.’

‘This race was one of the closest in our Commonwealth’s history, decided by less than a quarter of a point. I am grateful to the thousands of people who worked to make sure every eligible vote cast could be counted, including election officials in all 67 counties.’

The news comes after McCormick edged out Casey by just 17,000 votes to win the Senate seat, according to the most recent unofficial data from the Department of State – putting Casey well within the 0.5% margin of error required under Pennsylvania law to trigger an automatic recount.

That recount began Monday and was slated to end Nov. 26.

The Republican Party blasted Democrats this week for Casey’s refusal to concede the U.S. Senate race in Pennsylvania, taking aim at the three-term incumbent for moving ahead with a costly recount effort, despite their assessment that Casey lacked any achievable path to victory.

They have also criticized the cost, noting that the recount will cost taxpayers an estimated $1 million.

In his statement Thursday, Casey praised the democratic process and voters who turned out in the Keystone State.

‘When a Pennsylvanian takes the time to cast a legal vote, often waiting in long lines and taking time away from their work and family, they deserve to know that their vote will count,’ Casey said. ‘That’s democracy.’
