The parents of the American hostages who have been held by Hamas for nearly 420 days are once again pleading with the U.S. and Israeli officials to show a sense of ‘urgency’ in securing their freedom.

Seven of the 101 hostages held in Gaza are American, and their families, who will once again sit through another Thanksgiving dinner with an empty seat on Thursday, are again urging that their release be prioritized.

‘Our plea is that this is urgent, and I’m not sure we’re seeing the sense of urgency,’ Orna Neutra, mother of Omer Neutra, who was 21 years old when he was abducted by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, but who has since experienced two birthdays while in captivity, told Fox News Digital.

‘There were security issues that needed to be dealt with in the north, with Hezbollah, with Iran. But at this point, the hostages – which are a primary war goal for the Israelis – should be the first priority, and everything possible should be done to get them out,’ she continued. ‘It’s been very frustrating for us to follow this news cycle to make sure that they’re not forgotten, to wait patiently, constantly, until other goals are achieved.’

Orna, her husband Ronen Neutra, along with the families of other hostages still in Gaza have begun to question Netanyahu’s strategy for returning the hostages.

The Israeli prime minister has seen an increasing push at home and abroad by those calling on him to establish a cease-fire with Hamas and secure the hostages’ release.

Cease-fire negotiations have all but collapsed. And although the Biden administration continues to push all sides to the table to end the war and secure the release of the hostages, Israel’s military campaign to defeat Hamas continues.

‘It’s extremely . . . painful for us to see how the time is going by, and our son is held in those terrible conditions trying to survive,’ Omer’s father Ronen said. ‘The question is, what are we going to gain from a few more months of waiting with these conditions?’

Ultimately, as Omer’s parents highlighted, while IDF operations continue in Gaza the hostages remain in danger.

‘We saw what happened in late August, when the IDF was getting too close to the hostages, the terrorists got instructions to execute them,’ Orna said. ‘We saw six hostages executed in one day, one of them, American hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin. And the conditions that they were held in and the state in which they were retrieved – they were emaciated, they were dehydrated, it doesn’t leave a lot of room for imagination.

‘They are in horrible conditions, and they need to be taken out as soon as possible,’ she added.

Netanyahu has said his two primary goals in the Gaza campaign are the destruction of Hamas and securing the return of the hostages.

But following the October death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar – a major war aim for Netanyahu – military operations did not cease, nor were ceasefire negotiations fervently pursued by Israel or Hamas.

It is not only the continued military operations in Gaza that have begun to frustrate the families of the hostages, but also Israel’s increased attention in Lebanon, which has left many feeling that the hostages had been ‘sidelined.’

Israel and Lebanon on Wednesday entered into a cease-fire just two months after Jerusalem began its operations to oust Hezbollah, a move that will allow citizens in both countries to begin returning to their homes near the shared border. But despite nearly a year’s effort, no such deal has been secured in Gaza.

‘I am a bit disappointed that there is no connection between the Lebanon peace and the Gaza peace,’ Ruby Chen, father of Itay Chen, who was 19 and serving in the IDF when he was attacked and taken by Hamas terrorists, told Fox News Digital. ‘In Gaza, there are people, U.S. citizens, that are at risk and should come out.

‘But let’s have hope that this will bring Israel into focus on this peace for the hostages, as well as the other international players that are doing the hostage deal,’ he added.

In an address on Wednesday, Biden championed the Israel-Lebanon cease-fire but said, ‘Now Hamas has a choice to make. Their only way out is to release the hostages, including American citizens which they hold, and, in the process, bring an end to the fighting, which would make possible a surge of humanitarian relief.

‘Over the coming days, the United States will make another push with Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Israel and others to achieve a cease-fire in Gaza with the hostages released and the end to the war without Hamas in power,’ he added.

Many hold out hope that even if the Biden administration cannot secure the release of the hostages before he leaves office in January, that the incoming Trump administration may bring a change to the negotiations and secure the hostages’ release.

President-elect Donald Trump said from the campaign trail, ‘We want our hostages back, and they better be back before I assume office, or you will be paying a very big price.’

Trump has not detailed steps he would take to secure the hostages’ release from the terrorist network, though on Tuesday he signed a memorandum of understanding that should enable him to begin accessing intelligence regarding the hostages – a process that traditionally happens weeks prior to when Trump signed the document.

While some Republicans, including those whom Trump has tapped for top jobs in his administration, like Florida Sen.  Marco Rubio, have been in communication with the hostage families, the president-elect has not yet made contact with them, according to the parents of Omer and Itay.

Fox News Digital could not immediately reach Trump’s transition team to verify when the president-elect intends to reach out to the families and start on securing the hostages’ release.

The parents of Omer and Itay have said they will continue to make sure that neither everyday citizens nor world leaders forget their children who are still held hostage.

‘I have my empty seat again this Thanksgiving,’ Ruby said in reference to where his son Itay should sit. ‘We would hope that U.S. citizens that understand the tragedy of having an empty chair at the table would adopt that as well.

‘We have Christmas [and Hanukkah] coming up, hopefully we will have our Christmas miracle as well, and we’ll be able to be united as family again and bring him home,’ Ruby added.

The other American hostages still being held in Gaza include Edan Alexander, Sagui Dekel-Chen, Gadi Haggai, Judi Weinstein Haggai and Keith Siegel.

The U.S. women’s national team is in London, where a crowd of over 80,000 is expected to see the Olympic gold medalists — including goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who this week announced plans to retire from the national team — face England on Saturday at Wembley.

The massive crowd would make this one of the most highly-attended women’s soccer games ever. The record, at least for documented attendances in the modern era, is 91,648 fans for a UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) semifinal between Barcelona and Wolfsburg played on April 22, 2022. The 1971 Women’s World Cup, an event staged outside of FIFA’s purview, retains claims of a crowd of 110,000 at Estadio Azteca for the final between Mexico and Denmark, though clear record-keeping is hard to come by.

The largest crowd to watch the USWNT was on hand for a pivotal event in women’s sports history, as 90,185 attended the 1999 World Cup final between the U.S. and China at the Rose Bowl, famously decided by Brandi Chastain’s game-winning penalty kick. England has a similar experience, with the Lionesses drawing 87,192 to Wembley to see the hosts defeat Germany in the epic final of Euro 2022.

The match will also be one of the last opportunities for fans to watch Naeher with the U.S. national team. On Monday, the 36-year-old goalkeeper announced her retirement from the USWNT. Though Naeher will continue to play in the NWSL with the rebranded Chicago Stars FC for at least one more season, Saturday’s friendly against England and Tuesday’s meeting with the Netherlands will mark the end of Naeher’s iconic run with the USWNT.

Alyssa Naeher on USWNT retirement: ‘It takes a lot out of you’

Naeher’s retirement marks the end of an era for the USWNT. Since making her senior national team debut in December 2014, Naeher has been an essential part of an incredible run. The Connecticut native is a two-time World Cup winner and played every minute of the USWNT’s run to a gold medal during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Naeher progressed to a starting role in the aftermath of the 2016 Olympics, which was Hope Solo’s final tournament before her dramatic falling-out with U.S. Soccer. In the eight years since, Naeher has amassed the kind of stats that will see her walk away as a USWNT legend: 113 caps, 88 wins, and 68 shutouts — totals that trail only Solo and Briana Scurry.

Per Naeher, that success was not easy, with the goalkeeper admitting to reporters on Wednesday that the high standards required with the USWNT can be draining, regardless of how proud players are to represent their country at the highest level.

‘I feel very fulfilled with what we’ve been able to do, and it takes a lot out of you, honestly,’ said Naeher. ‘I’ve given everything I’ve had to this team, and I don’t do anything halfway. … Coming off of the Olympics, having the year that we had, entering into a new cycle, a new stage for this team, it just felt like I’ve kind of given everything I have to give to this team, and it just felt like the right time.’

Naeher said that the fact that she will be 39 when the next World Cup rolls around in 2027 weighed on her mind, and that the team’s ‘three-four year cycles with World Cups and Olympics specifically’ were factors in her decision-making.

‘You get to the end of any year, any season, and you just reevaluate where you’re at, mentally, physically, emotionally,’ Naeher said. ‘I feel very, very proud of the career that I’ve had, and what we’ve been able to accomplish as a team in these last 10-to-15 years.’

Naeher said that she was ‘nervous’ to tell USWNT coach Emma Hayes of her decision, but said the manager was ‘very supportive…very thankful’ for what the longtime starter had done for the team.

‘It’s the right time, and I feel good about, and I feel at peace with it. It’s still the end of something, and change is scary,’ said Naeher. ‘I’m gonna miss being a part of these camps and this team, and I think to have that conversation made it very real.’

Daniel Jones didn’t need long to formalize his next step after his abrupt split with the New York Giants.

After going unclaimed on waivers Monday, the sixth-year veteran quarterback is set to sign a contract with the Minnesota Vikings, coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed Wednesday. The one-year deal through the remainder of the season is worth $375,000, per reports. Jones is expected to start out on the Vikings’ practice squad, leaving him free to sign with another team if another opportunity arises.

Jones, 27, was officially waived by the Giants on Saturday after the team said Friday it came to a mutual agreement to separate with the longtime starter after his benching earlier in the week.

New York (2-9) opted to make the switch behind center coming out of its bye week. Jones threw two interceptions in the Giants’ 20-17 overtime loss to the Carolina Panthers before the break, with the defeat extending the team’s losing streak to five games. After the game, Giants coach Brian Daboll said the team would evaluate all of its options.

With a $23 million injury guarantee for 2025 in his contract, Jones was buried on the depth chart after his benching, with starter Tommy DeVito, backup Drew Lock and recently signed Tim Boyle all ahead of him.

All things Vikings: Latest Minnesota Vikings news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Dropped a little more than 20 months after he signed four-year, $160 million contract with the Giants, Jones had just eight touchdown passes this season with seven interceptions this season. Through 11 weeks, his 79.4 passer rating in 2024 ranked 32nd among qualified passers.

In Minnesota, Jones should slide in as the backup to Sam Darnold as the Vikings (9-2) prepare for a possible playoff run. Rookie J.J. McCarthy was lost for the season after undergoing meniscus surgery in August, leaving Nick Mullens and Brett Rypien as the fallback options behind Darnold.

“I got to know him through the draft process years ago,’ O’Connell said of Jones on Monday when asked about the possibility of signing him. ‘I’m sure, now that he’s a free agent, there’s probably a ton of league-wide interest in him. I can just say I’ve been a fan of Daniel’s for a long time and hope wherever his next stop takes him, it’s a good opportunity for him.’

With just under two minutes remaining, and with his team leading Indiana by 33 points, Louisville men’s basketball walk-on Patrick Antonelli checked into the game.

Twenty-four seconds of game time later, the 5-foot-11 guard calmly sank a pair of free throws to give him his first-ever points as a Division I player.

What was already a notable accomplishment for Antonelli was made that much sweeter not because of something on the court, but something just to the side of it — his mother, Debbie Antonelli, was calling the game for ESPN and was sitting only about 30 feet away from him when he made the free throws.

Louisville’s 89-61 rout Wednesday of No. 15 Indiana in the quarterfinals of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas elicited a slew of warm, positive and euphoric emotions for Cardinals fans who watched their proud and storied program become a punchline for the better part of a decade, initially for off-court scandals and then because of shockingly awful on-court results during Kenny Payne’s disastrous two-year tenure.

A cathartic afternoon was capped off with a heartwarming moment, with Antonelli not only playing, but also scoring while his mother, a former standout player at NC State, had the opportunity to narrate the action.

BATTLE 4 ATLANTIS 2024: Bracket, teams, schedule for college basketball tournament

Though Antonelli is from South Carolina, he grew up a Louisville fan, according to his biography on the Cardinals’ official roster. He joined the team as a walk-on ahead of coach Pat Kelsey’s first season after playing the previous four seasons at Emory & Henry, a Division II school in Virginia, where he started 56 of his 63 career games.

During the win against the Hoosiers, Debbie Antonelli described playing for Louisville as “a dream come true” for her son, who’s pursuing a master’s degree in sports administration.

The elder Antonelli played at NC State from 1982-86, helping lead the Wolfpack to two Sweet 16s and an ACC regular-season and tournament championship in 1985. She has worked as a television and radio broadcaster for various networks for 36 years. She had ties to the commonwealth of Kentucky long before her son arrived at Louisville’s campus, as she served as Kentucky’s first director of marketing and broadcast the first women’s basketball games on television for the Wildcats.

She has won two Emmy Awards for her work and was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.

On Wednesday, though, she got to enjoy being a proud mother.

“All I care about is him being around good guys and being around a good coaching staff and that’s what he’s got,” she said of her son as he checked into the game.

And, now, he got an unforgettable memory, too.

Three-time All-Star shortstop Brandon Crawford announced his retirement on Wednesday via his Instagram account.

Crawford played 13 of his 14 major league seasons with the San Francisco Giants and won World Series rings in 2012 and 2014. He won four Gold Glove Awards during his career.

Crawford’s best season was 2021 when he finished fourth in National League MVP voting after batting .298 with 24 homers and 90 RBIs in 138 games.

Crawford, 37, spent 2024 with the St. Louis Cardinals but will long be remembered as one of the top shortstops in Giants’ history. He played a franchise record 1,617 games at the position, breaking the mark of Hall of Famer Travis Jackson (1,326 from 1922-36).

‘Growing up in the Bay Area and going to games at Candlestick, I always dreamed of playing for the San Francisco Giants,’ Crawford wrote. ‘Being drafted by my hometown team and spending most of my career with them far surpassed any dream I had as a kid. I definitely pretended to win a World Series in my backyard — but winning two? That was beyond my wildest dreams.

All things Giants: Latest San Francisco Giants news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

‘I always dreamed of being the shortstop for the Giants, but never could I have imagined breaking the team record for the most games played at the position.’

Crawford first reached the majors in 2011 and was a key player on the title teams of 2012 and 2014. He was an NL All-Star for the first time in 2015. He also made the team in 2018 and 2021.

‘Watching Brandon play was an absolute privilege for not only me but for Giants’ fans everywhere,’ Giants CEO Larry Baer said in a news release. ‘He was an All-Star, Gold Glove and Silver Slugger winner, a two-time World Series champion that always carried himself with class, honor and respect.’

Last season, Crawford played in just 28 games for St. Louis and batted .169 with one homer and four RBIs in 28 games before the team released him in August.

‘It’s been an unforgettable journey,’ Crawford said. ‘Thank you Giants for allowing me to live out my dream and be a part of so much throughout my career in San Francisco.’

The San Francisco 49ers suffered their biggest loss of the season in Week 12 on the road against the Green Bay Packers. The 38-10 setback marked the 49ers’ biggest margin of defeat since Week 9 of the 2018 season, a 39-10 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

San Francisco had a season-low 241 yards of offense against the Packers and committed three turnovers for the third time this season. They were operating without Brock Purdy at quarterback for the first time in two years as Brandon Allen started in his place.

Purdy missed his first NFL game due to injury because of a shoulder issue that developed during the 49ers’ Week 11 loss to the Seahawks.

This week, the 49ers take on one of the top teams in the NFL in prime time. The Buffalo Bills, winners of their last six games and fresh off a bye week, will host the 49ers on ‘Sunday Night Football.’

Here’s the latest on whether Purdy will suit up in the freezing temperatures.

All things 49ers: Latest San Francisco 49ers news, schedule, roster, stats, injury updates and more.

Will Brock Purdy play this week?

Purdy is listed as questionable this week with a shoulder injury. He was limited in practice Wednesday in a similar fashion to a week ago and he ended up missing last Sunday’s game.

Purdy did some ‘light throwing’ on Monday, per coach Kyle Shanahan, and rested on Tuesday. He threw on Monday without any reported shoulder issue.

Week 12 marked the first time Purdy missed a start with injury since he took over in Week 14 of the 2022 NFL season. His most recent significant injury came in the NFC championship game in January 2023, when he tore the UCL in his throwing arm and left the game after throwing four passes.

Allen had a tough game against the Packers in his first start since Week 18 of the 2021 NFL season. He completed 17 of 29 passes for 199 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He had two carries for 5 yards and two fumbles (one lost) as well.

Brock Purdy injury

Purdy took a hard hit to his shoulder area at some point during the 49ers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks. He finished that day 21-for-28 passing but averaged a season-low 5.7 yards per attempt. Shanahan denied limiting downfield passing in the game due to an injury, saying instead that Seattle’s coverages changed the game plan.

Brock Purdy stats

In 10 games this season, Purdy has completed 202 of 306 passes for 2,613 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions with a 95.9 passer rating. He’s also rushed 51 times for 267 yards and four touchdowns.

49ers QB depth chart

With Purdy’s status up in the air, Allen may be the starter in Buffalo again. Here’s how the depth chart looks if Purdy can’t go:

Brandon Allen
Joshua Dobbs

The 49ers also have quarterback Tanner Mordecai signed to the practice squad.

MAUI, Hawaii — National Player of the Year candidate Johni Broome and No. 3 Auburn captured the Maui Invitational championship with a 90-76 win over Memphis on Wednesday at Lahaina Civic Center.

Broome and frontcourt running mate Dylan Cardwell dominated Penny Hardaway’s Tigers (6-1). Broome had 21 points, 16 rebounds, six assists and four blocks, while Cardwell put up 18 points and had three rebounds and six assists.

The blowout was reminiscent of the Battle 4 Atlantis last season, where Memphis beat Michigan and Arkansas before losing to Villanova by 16. The Tigers upset No. 2 UConn on Monday, then took down Michigan State on Tuesday.

But Memphis ran into a buzz saw in Broome and Auburn. The closest Memphis got to the lead in the second half was 13 points (with 12:17 left in the game).

Auburn (7-0) has victories over four top-30 teams in the KenPom rankings, including Houston, Iowa State and North Carolina. Auburn is ranked No. 1 by KenPom.

Memphis star PJ Haggerty finished the tournament with a standout individual performance, putting up 27 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Tyrese Hunter was one of the best players in the tournament after the first two days, averaging 24.5 points and shooting 60% from the 3-point line. But Auburn neutralized Hunter, holding him scoreless in the first half. He scored 11 in the second half. Colby Rogers and Dain Dainja also got into double-digits with 15 points each.

Memphis returns to action against Louisiana Tech on Dec. 4 (7 p.m. ET, ESPN+) at FedExForum.

After losing their first game of the season to the Buffalo Bills in Week 11, the Kansas City Chiefs barely got past the Carolina Panthers 30-27 last Sunday on the road.

Kansas City enjoyed one of its best days on the ground, with 165 rushing yards against Carolina despite the close finish. Kareem Hunt led the way with 68 yards on 16 carries and Patrick Mahomes added another 60 yards on five scrambles.

Even with that high yardage total, Kansas City ranks 18th in the league in rushing this season. The Chiefs have had to work with Hunt, Carson Steele, and Samaje Perine at the running back position following a severe leg injury to last year’s leading rusher, Isiah Pacheco.

Pacheco was designated to return from injured reserve two weeks ago, opening a 21-day window for him to play for the Chiefs. He initially looked set to play against Carolina but was eventually held out of the game.

Here’s the latest on his status this week as the Chiefs return home to host the Las Vegas Raiders on Black Friday.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Will Isiah Pacheco play this week?

Yes. Kansas City coach Andy Reid confirmed Wednesday that Pacheco will be back in the lineup against the Raiders, barring any significant setbacks.

Pacheco was a full-go in practice last week and was a full participant again on Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of the team’s Friday game. Kansas City is also expecting defensive lineman Charles Omenihu back from injury for this week’s game as well.

Isiah Pacheco injury

Pacheco was injured in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals on a 1-yard carry on the final drive of the game. He was sandwiched by three Bengals defenders and Steele closed the game out at running back for the Chiefs.

Pacheco was later seen with crutches and in a walking boot.

He was later diagnosed with a fractured fibula, which typically takes between four and eight weeks to heal. His 10-week break is a bit longer than expected, and implies it was a severe fracture.

Chiefs RB depth chart

Hunt has been the primary ball-carrier out of the backfield for the Chiefs since Pacheco’s injury. Here’s how the depth chart has looked with him out:

Kareem Hunt
Samaje Perine
Carson Steele
Clyde Edwards-Helaire

One of those players will likely be demoted to the practice squad with Pacheco’s return, likely Edwards-Helaire. Keaontay Ingram is currently the only running back signed to the practice squad at time of publishing.

Ready for a heaping helping of NFL football?

Week 13 means a three-way course of Thanksgiving offerings … although they may be mere side dishes this year. The Detroit Lions need to beat the Chicago Bears, among several other prerequisites, if they want to clinch a playoff berth this week. The New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys … well, they’re playing, too. Hoping to ward off a tryptophan coma Thursday night? The Green Bay Packers host the surging Miami Dolphins in what ought to be the game of the day.

And don’t forget Black Friday! That’s now also an NFL tradition … as we enter Year 2 of the league slotting a game in the middle of your holiday shopping spree. The Kansas City Chiefs, who could also nail down a postseason slot this weekend, will host the Las Vegas Raiders – kickoff at 3 p.m. ET, and you can stream it on Prime Video if you happen to be in line at a brick and mortar store … or simply looking for deals on Amazon.

Sunday has some nice games – Chargers-Falcons, Steelers-Bengals, Cardinals-Vikings and 49ers-Bills on ‘Sunday Night Football.’ But the marquee matchup of the weekend will be the Philadelphia Eagles’ visit to the Baltimore Ravens, a game that will showcase mirror-image powerhouses that feature resurgent running backs Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry, respectively.

How does it all spill out of the football cornucopia? To the picks …

Surprises abound at the top and bottom of the NBA standings, Cleveland’s 15-0 start and 17-1 record among them.

Golden State finding its way without Klay Thompson and with a deep roster has it among the top teams in the Western Conference. Philadelphia’s place near the bottom of the Eastern Conference was not expected. Houston’s surge with a young team is exciting, but can the Rockets keep it up for a full season?

Some things are not surprising such as Boston and Oklahoma City excelling though the first five weeks. San Antonio and Victor Wembanyama starting to figure out how to win – with Gregg Popovich recovering from a stroke – is an encouraging development for the Spurs, and Orlando winning without Paolo Banchero is a great sign for the Magic.

USA TODAY’s first NBA power rankings for the 2024-25 season:

NBA power rankings

1. Cleveland Cavaliers (17-1)

The Cavs became the fourth team in NBA history to win their first 15 games of a season, and they lead the league in offensive rating (122.8), points per game (123.4), true shooting percentage (63.3%), field goal percentage (52%) and 3-point percentage (41.5%).

2. Boston Celtics (15-3)

The Celtics’ starting five isn’t just the best in the league based on the eye test. Of the starting lineups that have played at least 150 minutes, Boston’s starting five of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, Derrick White and Jrue Holiday have the best net rating at plus-20.1, scoring 125.3 points per 100 possessions and allowing 105.2 points per 100 possessions.

3. Oklahoma City Thunder (13-4)

The Thunder, the league’s top-rated defense allowing 103.2 points per 100 possessions, is averaging 12.1 steals per game. The NBA record was set by the 1977-78 Suns, who generated 12.9.

4. Golden State Warriors (12-5)

Stephen Curry and the Warriors are among the top teams in the Western Conference standings, and Curry leads the team in scoring (22.5 points per game) and assists (6.5 per game). Buddy Hield and Andrew Wiggins contribute to a deep offensive attack with each scoring more than 15 points per game.

5. Houston Rockets (13-6)

The Rockets have made their mark as one of the better defensive teams in the league this season. They allow just 103.8 points per 100 possessions (No. 2 in the league) and have also won eight of their past 10 games.

6. Orlando Magic (12-7)

Orlando lost its first four games after Paolo Banchero went down with a torn oblique. Since then, the Magic have won nine of 10, and Franz Wagner (37 points, 11 assists in win vs. the Los Angeles Lakers) has emerged as a legitimate No. 2 option.

7. Memphis Grizzlies (11-7)

Bolstered by the height of their frontcourt depth — led by forward Jaren Jackson Jr. and centers Zach Edey and Jay Huff — the Grizzlies lead the NBA in blocked shots with 7.6 per game.

8. New York Knicks (10-7)

It helps to bolster an already solid starting lineup with offseason additions Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges: the Knicks lead the NBA in games (11) in which all starters score double figures.

9. Los Angeles Clippers (11-8)

James Harden is among the Clippers’ leaders in points (20.6) and rebounds (7.3) while leading in assists (8.7) and steals (1.5) as Kawhi Leonard remains out with an injury.

10. Denver Nuggets (9-7)

We know all about center Nikola Jokic’s elite triple-double production but don’t sleep on Michael Porter Jr.’s season: career-best 18.6 points and 2.8 assists per game while grabbing 7.3 rebounds per game and shooting 49.2% from the field and 40.7% on 3s.

11. Dallas Mavericks (10-8)

The Mavericks sought to address 3-point shooting with the addition of Thompson, but the Mavericks are 20th at 34.8% on 3s and 21st in made 3s per game (12.2). If the Mavs want to get back to the West finals and NBA Finals, that needs to improve.

12. Phoenix Suns (10-7)

How important is Kevin Durant to the Suns’ success? The Suns are 9-1 with Durant in the lineup and 1-6 in the games he missed with a strained calf.

13. San Antonio Spurs (10-8)

The Spurs have a top-10 defense (No. 9), allowing 110.8 points per 100 possessions. Wembanyama is anchoring the defense – and Chris Paul is helping make a difference as the Spurs navigate this portion of the season without Hall of Fame coach Popovich.

14. Milwaukee Bucks (9-9)

The Bucks are starting to put a few things together after a 2-8 start. They have now won five consecutive games, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, this week’s Eastern Conference player of the week, is averaging 33.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 6.9 assists in his past nine games.

15. Los Angeles Lakers (10-7)

Anthony Davis, LeBron James and the Lakers won six straight games before losing three consecutive games. Davis leads the team in points (29.8), rebounds (11.4), blocks (2.1) and steals (1.3).

16. Minnesota Timberwolves (8-9)

The Timberwolves, who have lost three in a row, continue to work on team chemistry since trading for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo. Rudy Gobert displayed a level of frustration when Randle didn’t pass him the ball in the paint against the Raptors. That is worth monitoring going forward.

17. Miami Heat (7-8)

Jimmy Butler had 33 points, nine rebounds and six assists while leading the Heat in a 123-118 overtime victory against the Mavericks on Sunday. It was Miami’s first game after five days off.

18. Sacramento Kings (8-10)

The Kings have three players scoring at least 20 points per game – De’Aaron Fox (28.1 ppg), DeMar DeRozan (22.6) and Domantas Sabonis (20.0).

19. Brooklyn Nets (8-10)

The Nets have won three of their past four games after losing three straight. The Nets are waiting for the return of Dennis Schroder, Dorian Finney-Smith and Bojan Bogdanovic, who all missed some time over the weekend with lower leg injuries.

20. Detroit Pistons (8-11)

We’re starting to see what Cade Cunningham can become as he’s posting career highs in points (23.5), assists (8.9) and rebounds (7.2). A slight increase in efficiency will make Cunningham even more dangerous offensively.

21. Indiana Pacers (8-10)

Before their victory over Washington on Sunday night, the Pacers had dropped five of their previous six games, giving Indiana its worst winning percentage (.375) since the end of the 2022-23 season.

22. Chicago Bulls (8-11)

The Bulls get after it offensively – No. 1 in pace, No. 2 in 3-pointers made per game, No. 3 in 3-point field goal percentage and No. 5 in assists. But they are 25th defensively and have lost eight games by 10 or more points.

23. Portland Trail Blazers (7-11)

The Trail Blazers have been among the league’s most careless teams with the ball, ranking 29th in turnovers per game (17.3). Not surprisingly, opponents are averaging 20.9 points per game on those giveaways — 28th in the NBA.

24. Atlanta Hawks (7-11)

The Hawks lead the Eastern Conference in assists per game (29.1) and have recorded nine straight games of at least 25 assists. With 32 assists Monday against the Mavericks, they tied the franchise record for the longest streak with 25 or more.

25. Charlotte Hornets (6-11)

LaMelo Ball leads the Hornets in points (31.0 per game) and assists (6.9) and he scored a career-high 50 points in a loss to the Bucks on Saturday. Grant Williams also suffered an ACL injury, a significant blow to Charlotte’s depth.

26. Toronto Raptors (4-14)

The Raptors lost seven consecutive games before winning two of their past four games. Scottie Barnes added much-needed offense with 17 points against Minnesota in his return from an injury.

27. Utah Jazz (4-12)

The Jazz’s early-season struggles have landed them at the bottom of the West standings, but they recently snapped a four-game losing streak with a 121-106 win against the Knicks on Saturday.

28. Philadelphia 76ers (3-13)

Injuries (Joel Embiid, Paul George, Tyrese Maxey), chemistry (several new players) and Embiid’s suspension have played a role in Philadelphia’s poor start – 28th offensively, 18th defensively and 27th in net rating at minus-8.6 points per 100 possessions.

29. New Orleans Pelicans (4-14)

The Pelicans — who’ve seen injuries to key players Dejounte Murray, Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum, Herb Jones and Trey Murphy III, among others — had already accrued 86 total games missed due to injury or illness.

30. Washington Wizards (2-14)

The Wizards rank second-to-last in offensive rating (105.1), dead last in defensive rating (118.8) and dead last in net rating (minus-13.7), and they have lost 12 consecutive games.
