President Biden first learned of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s prostate cancer on Tuesday, which was the same day as the public and a month after the diagnosis.

Walter Reed National Military Medical Center revealed Tuesday that Austin was diagnosed with prostate cancer in early December and underwent a prostatectomy on Dec. 22.

Per Walter Reed, the 70-year-old recovered uneventfully from his surgery and he returned the following morning. His prostate cancer was detected early and the prognosis is ‘excellent,’ the hospital said.

During his hospitalization, Austin transferred authority to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks and did not inform the White House. The Defense Department has for days said Austin was initially at Walter Reed for an ‘elective medical procedure’ and not prostate surgery.

White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said Tuesday that Biden was not informed of Austin’s hospitalization until last Thursday and only learned of the cancer diagnosis on Tuesday.

Asked whether Biden believed the time-lapse was acceptable, Kirby said it was ‘not optimal.’

‘For a situation like this to go as long as it did without the commander in chief knowing about it or the national security adviser knowing about it or, frankly, other leaders at the Department of Defense, that’s not the way this is supposed to happen. The president understands that,’ Kirby said.

White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients released a memo earlier Tuesday to the president’s Cabinet with regard to protocols for delegating authority. It asks that every Cabinet agency submit in writing their current existing protocols for a delegation of authority they have in place for review to the White House Office of Cabinet Affairs and the chief of staff by Friday.

Zients’ memo also directs protocols that Cabinet agencies must undertake in the event of a delegation of authority, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said. The Pentagon has also launched its own review.

‘We all recognize that this didn’t unfold the way it should have. On so many levels, not just the notification process up the chain of command but the transparency issue, we all recognize that. And I think we all want to make sure we learn from that,’ Kirby said.

It was still not clear on Tuesday how this would affect Austin’s job, travel or other public engagements going forward.

The Pentagon issued a memo Monday on its own internal review and broadened the circle of leaders who would be informed of any delegation of authority by the defense secretary to ensure that in the future ‘proper and timely notification has been made to the President and White House and, as appropriate, the United States Congress and the American public.’

Going forward, any time authority is transferred, a wider range of officials who will also be notified include the Pentagon’s general counsel, the chair and vice chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the combatant commanders, service secretaries, the service chiefs of staff, the White House Situation Room, and the senior staff of the secretary and deputy secretary of defense.

As a main aluminum producer, Alcoa (AA) announced cost-cutting measures, along with plans to curtail production at one Western Australian Refinery. But that is just one facility, and the company plans to continue to operate its port facilities located alongside the refinery. Plus, it will continue to import raw materials and export alumina produced at the Company’s Pinjarra Alumina Refinery.

Alcoa Corporation is a Pittsburgh-based industrial corporation. It is the world’s eighth-largest producer of aluminum. Alcoa conducts operations in 10 countries. Russia is the 3rd largest producer of aluminum, India is number 2, and China is the world’s largest producer. I am interested in the metal mining space, as well as industrial metals as an area that could play catch up in 2024, especially with any supply chain disruption.

The daily chart of the company looks interesting. There is near-term support at 31.00 and major support at 30.00. And we really want to see the price regain 33.00. Our Leadership indicator shows it slightly outperforming the SPY. Real Motion has momentum improving, as it is back over the zero line. Plus, we cannot wait to see the January calendar ranges when they reset next week.

Aluminum futures have a bit of different look.

The futures chart shows us a dramatic decline in price from December’s peak. 2180 is the major support here. A move back over 2250 should send aluminum back up to test higher levels.

If this is a double top, then we will see the March contract fail 3280. However, it could also be a somewhat lopsided inverted head and shoulders with a neckline breakout over 2420. I would not necessarily wait for that to enter this trade. I would, however, add to a long position if it gets up there.

Bottom line, AA and the futures chart are great tools to use to assess the strength of the industrial metals, economic growth, supply and demand, and, quite possibly, a reignition of inflation.

Important days for stocks usually are associated with big volume, major support/resistance, and a test of leadership. As I look at Upwork, Inc. (UPWK), it’s check, check, and check. Before I look at UPWK individually, let me show you what we typically see with internet stocks (which UPWK is a part of) during the month of January:

Throughout this secular bull market (since 2013), the DJUSNS has produced January gains two-thirds of the time. The average January performance over this period is 4.2%, which only trails the month of July. The bottom line is that internet stocks love the month of January. Outside of the opening day of 2024, stocks like META, NFLX, and PINS have already started the year off quite strong. This only adds to the odds of a UPWK rally if we see a clear breakout later today. And if we fail today, I wouldn’t write UPWK off. Rather, it’s likely to just be a delay before stronger price action arrives.

Let’s look at the UPWK chart:

Yesterday, UPWK closed at 15.66, which eclipsed the prior high candle body of 15.57. That slight breakout was also accompanied by the heaviest daily volume in two months. In my opinion, today is the day for UPWK. We gapped slightly lower at the opening bell to 15.64, but surged in very early action to 16.36, UPWK’s highest level since reaching 16.39 on September 16, 2022. Volume has very heavy out of the gate this morning. But UPWK has since reversed, losing over a buck from Monday’s high. So the question today is, “Does UPWK strengthen this afternoon to add a second straight 16-month high close or does a shooting star candle (or bearish engulfing candle) and false breakout print?” The answer to that question will likely determine UPWK’s short-term price direction. I love the clear-cut bottoming process in play here, as evidenced by reverse head & shoulders pattern, but ultimately, UPWK needs to break that neckline resistance with some momentum. Check out this potential H&S bottoming pattern:

This could turn into a big bullish afternoon reversal and breakout OR a miserable failed breakout. But it’s these types of days that I like to pay close attention to as a trader.

Finally, S&P 500 performance during the month of January has a long history of providing us excellent clues as to where the U.S. stock market is heading later in the year. Although there are still 14 teams competing for the Super Bowl, there are 18 fanbases looking ahead to the 2024 NFL season already. Thankfully, NFL opponents are set.

There may still be eight months between now and the start of the next regular season, but it’s never too early to start daydreaming about how your favorite team, which went 5-12 this season, can totally reach the Super Bowl next year if a few things go correctly.

Outside of the six divisional games every season, the rest of each team’s NFL schedule can make or break a team’s season. Even the best teams can find themselves in rough water heading into the playoffs with a schedule that has them face each of their toughest opponents on the road. With that, here is the full list of home/away opponents in 2024.

2024 NFL schedule: Most exciting NFL matchups

In a year full of question marks, with teams and players constantly having to prove that 2023 either was or was not a fluke, there are bound to be several incredible matchups. Here are our picks for the most anticipated NFL games of 2024.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Jacksonville Jaguars at Chicago Bears

While it is still unknown what the Chicago Bears are going to do with the first overall pick, the consensus seems to be that they will move on from Justin Fields and draft Caleb Williams. Williams is well-regarded as the best quarterback prospect since Trevor Lawrence…well, they could be going head-to-head as early as next season.

San Francisco 49ers at Miami Dolphins

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has become one of the most beloved head coaches in the NFL. However, his genius offensive mind may only be topped by his mentor, Kyle Shanahan. These two have faced each other one other time with Shanahan coming out on top 33-17 on Dec. 4, 2022.

Buffalo Bills at Baltimore Ravens

Despite these teams consistently being near the top of the AFC standings, they’ve only faced each other once in the regular season since 2020. While they did face each other in the playoffs in 2021, that game does not really count since Lamar Jackson had to leave the game early after suffering a concussion. With how hot the Bills were to end the year and how good the Ravens were throughout the entirety of this season, this will be a must-watch game for any serious NFL fan.

Las Vegas Raiders at New Orleans Saints

A revenge game for Saints quarterback Derek Carr. While he did not put together a particularly great season his first year with the Saints, Carr will likely show out to make his former team regret letting him walk away. Throw in the fact that the Raiders may draft a quarterback in the first round this year and you’ve got the makings of a great contest.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Kansas City Chiefs

A rematch of the 2021 Super Bowl, both teams feel very different now. The Chiefs could obviously rebound after a lackluster season on the offensive side of the ball. But even if they do, there is no Tyreek Hill, an entirely new offensive line, and an aging Travis Kelce for the Chiefs now. The Bucs, meanwhile, obviously don’t have Tom Brady anymore.

The Bucs served Mahomes one of the most embarrassing losses of his young career in that Super Bowl. You can bet he holds at least a little bit of a grudge.

The latest odds are out for the Super Bowl 58 champion now that the field has narrowed down ahead of the first round of the playoffs, which begin next weekend.

Unsurprisingly, the two teams that hold the No. 1 seed in their respective conferences, the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, lead the way. However, the remaining 12 teams have some variance in how they stack up relative to their seeding.

Here’s where Super Bowl 58 odds stand as of Monday afternoon, courtesy of BetMGM.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Super Bowl 58 odds: How things stand before wild card games

1. San Francisco 49ers (+225)

The 49ers hold the top seed in the NFC and earned a first-round bye with their 12-5 regular season record. They are odds-on favorites to win the conference, at -120 odds.

2. Baltimore Ravens (+325)

Baltimore clinched the No. 1 seed in the AFC and earned a bye in their Week 17 win over the Dolphins. The Ravens finished the regular season with a 13-4 record and are favorites to win the AFC with +140 odds.

3. Buffalo Bills (+650)

Thanks to a strong end to the season, the Bills completed a push to win the AFC East and take the No. 2 seed in the conference. Buffalo finished their regular season 11-6.

4. Dallas Cowboys (+750)

Much like the Bills, a stellar run over the final weeks of the season completed the Cowboys’ push to a division title and the conference’s No. 2 seed. A Week 18 victory over the Commanders gave them a 12-5 record in the regular season, and a head-to-head loss to the 49ers was all that held the team from swiping the No. 1 seed.

5. Kansas City Chiefs (+900)

The Chiefs’ 2023 NFL season was an underwhelming follow-up for the reigning Super Bowl champions. Kansas City finished the year with an 11-6 record after a 7-2 start.

6. Philadelphia Eagles (+1300)

The Eagles dropped five of their final six games – including losses to the Cardinals and Giants, two of the NFL’s worst teams this year – to miss out on back-to-back NFC East division titles. They finished the season 11-6.

7. Miami Dolphins (+1600)

Miami lost the AFC East division title with their ‘Sunday Night Football’ loss to the Bills in Week 18. Their 11-6 record was an improvement on last year’s 9-8 finish.

8. Detroit Lions (+2000)

The Lions will host a playoff game for the first time in 30 years this weekend thanks to their first-ever NFC North title. Detroit finished the regular season with a 12-5 record, and a one-point loss to the Cowboys in Week 17 is all that kept them from the No. 2 seed.

9. Cleveland Browns (+3300)

Cleveland is an unlikely playoff team after losing their franchise quarterback, Deshaun Watson, midseason and turning to veteran Joe Flacco in Week 13. The Browns finished the year 11-6.

10. Houston Texans (+4000)

The Texans are back in the playoffs just one year after holding the second-worst record in the NFL. Rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud will get his first playoff start at home after Houston went 10-7 and won the AFC South.

11. Los Angeles Rams (+5000)

Don’t sleep on the Rams, who finished the season 10-7 but won seven of their final eight games after a 3-6 start to the season. Keep an eye out for Los Angeles rookie receiver Puka Nacua in the playoffs after the fifth-round pick set the rookie record for receptions (105) and receiving yards (1,486) in a season.

12. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+6600)

Quarterback Baker Mayfield is a certified journeyman now that he’s playing on his fourth team in three years. He led the Buccaneers to a 9-8 record, NFC South title and playoff berth in the first year after Tom Brady’s retirement.

13. Green Bay Packers (+8000)

The Packers clinched a playoff spot in the last week of the season in their first year with Jordan Love under center. Green Bay finished second in the NFC North with a 9-8 record.

14. Pittsburgh Steelers (+12500)

It wasn’t pretty, but the Steelers completed another winning season and returned to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus. Pittsburgh finished the regular season third in the AFC North with a 10-7 record.

Conference play is in full swing in men’s college basketball, and those results are sure to produce plenty of fluctuation in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll the rest of the way.

The changes didn’t reach the top this week, however, as Purdue retains the No. 1 position. The Boilermakers handled their top-10 showdown with Illinois this week and retain 21 of 32 first-place votes to stay on top of the rankings.

Houston, one of the few remaining teams still unscathed, nudges ahead of new Big 12 rival Kansas for the No. 2 spot. The Cougars claim 10 first-place nods this week, with the Jayhawks holding on to the last one.

TOP 25: Complete USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll

The next three teams remain unchanged as Connecticut, Tennessee and Kentucky hold their positions. North Carolina moves up two slots to No. 7, and No. 8 Arizona and No. 9 Oklahoma also make two-spot gains. Illinois slips two places but remains in the top 10, while Marquette tumbles five places to No. 12 behind No. 11 Duke.

No. 15 Wisconsin, up six places, and No. 16 Auburn, gaining eight, are the week’s big movers. San Diego State and Creighton rejoin the poll at 19 and 20, respectively. Also moving in this week is Utah State, debuting in a tie at No. 23 with Mississippi.

James Madison, Texas and Providence are the dropouts.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets can officially look ahead to next season, after a 17-3 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday put the finishing touches on a disappointing 7-10 campaign.

‘We’re all going to be on the hot seat next year,’ he said.

For Rodgers himself, the most important thing is to be fully recovered from the torn Achilles tendon that ended his season in Week 1 after only four offensive snaps.

Beyond that, the veteran quarterback said the team needs to sharpen its focus.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

‘Anything in this building that we’re doing that has nothing to do with winning needs to be assessed,’ Rodgers said. ‘Everything that we do has to have a purpose … the (expletive) that has nothing to do with winning has to get out of the building.’

However, he didn’t address any particular changes he, personally, might make.

Last Tuesday, Rodgers drew criticism for comments he made about late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel during his weekly appearance on the Pat McAfee Show. ESPN later issued an apology, calling Rodgers’ linking of Kimmel to the Jeffrey Epstein court documents ‘a dumb and factually inaccurate joke.’

When asked by reporters about those comments on Monday, Rodgers declined to respond, other than to say, ‘I’m going to talk about it tomorrow on the (McAfee) show.’

Rodgers also said he’s looking forward to being the Jets’ starting quarterback next season − and possibly longer.

‘I would like this to be more than just next year,’ he said.

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton had to be carried off the floor in Monday night’s game against the Celtics when he slipped while trying to drive the lane.

With the Pacers down 60-54 with 3:10 to go in the second quarter, Haliburton drove the left side of the lane and his right leg slipped forward while his left leg stayed back. He essentially did a split. He managed to stand up, but then seemed hobbled. Pacers veteran James Johnson and teammate Buddy Hield stepped in to carry him off the floor and other teammates draped a towel around his head to hide his reaction.

At halftime, the Pacers announced Haliburton was suffering from a left hamstring strain and would not return to the game. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported after the game he would undergo an MRI on Tuesday.

Bennedict Mathurin led the Pacers to a 133-131 victory, scoring 26 points, including the winning free throws with 1 second left.

‘We lost the best player on the team, so it’s my job to step up,’ Mathurin said postgame.

Haliburton entered Monday’s game leading the Pacers with 24.2 points per game and leading the NBA with 12.7 assists per game. In the NBA’s first release of the fan vote for the All-Star Game to be held in Indianapolis in February, Haliburton was leading all Eastern Conference guards. Haliburton had seven points on 3 of 5 shooting and six assists before the injury.

It didn’t take long for the NFL’s ‘Black Monday’ to officially begin.

Just after midnight eastern time, the Atlanta Falcons fired coach Arthur Smith, dismissing him just hours after a blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints capped his three-year run with the franchise.

And that was just the start of the action. Early Monday morning, the Washington Commanders moved on from coach Ron Rivera.

The day marks an annual reckoning for coaching staffs and front offices throughout the league. More moves are sure to come – although some might not be completed until later in the week – so stick with USA TODAY Sports for all the moves on firings and resignations.

Chargers request to interview Patrick Graham, per report

The Chargers have requested to interview Raiders defensive coordinator, per NFL Media. Graham, who has been the Raiders’ defensive coordinator for the past two seasons, led one of the league’s top-rated defenses this season. Graham previously worked as an assistant coach in the NFL for the New York Giants, Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots.

Panthers request nine interviews for head coach vacancy

It’s been six weeks since the Carolina Panthers fired head coach Frank Reich (and a few hours since they pink-slipped GM Scott Fitterer). Now they’re casting a net for Reich’s potential replacement. Per the team’s website, interviews have been requested for nine potential HC candidates. They are: Lions OC Ben Johnson, Texans OC Bobby Slowik, Dolphins OC Frank Smith, Bengals OC Brian Callahan, Buccaneers OC Dave Canales, Rams DC Raheem Morris, Ravens DC Mike Macdonald, Cowboys DC Dan Quinn and Ravens OC Todd Monken.

No in-person interviews are legal before Jan. 22, but candidates can meet via Zoom calls prior to that.

Ravens’ Todd Monken sought for interviews, per reports

Todd Monken was hired by the Baltimore Ravens to overhaul the team’s offense and maximize QB Lamar Jackson’s talent. Good choice. The Ravens enter a bye week as the AFC’s top-seeded playoff team, while Jackson is the presumptive favorite to win his second league MVP award.

And Monken stands to benefit, now a head-coach candidate because of his work in 2023. According to multiple reports, both the Carolina Panthers and Los Angeles Chargers have requested to speak with him for their vacancies.

Prior to joining the Ravens, Monken won back-to-back national championships with Georgia at the college level as the Bulldogs’ offensive coordinator.

Baltimore ranked fourth in scoring and yards per play on top of having the best rushing attack in the league (156.5 yards per game).

Earlier in the day, per NFL Media, the Washington Commanders requested to interview Monken’s colleague, Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.

Jaguars dismiss defensive staff

The Jacksonville Jaguars, following a late-season collapse in which they squandered away the AFC South lead and missed the playoffs entirely, have made significant changes to their coaching staff. According to NFL Media, defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell and several of his assistants have been fired.

Caldwell finished his second season leading a unit that had a strong start to 2023 but faltered down the stretch. He was previously the inside linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was part of the staff that won the Super Bowl 55.

Panthers begin requesting interviews for coach, GM candidates

A month and a half after firing Frank Reich, the Carolina Panthers are eyeing candidates for their coaching vacancy.

The Panthers requested an interview with Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, according to multiple reports.

Callahan does not call plays for the Bengals, but he has played a key role under coach Zac Taylor in the development of Joe Burrow and Cincinnati’s offense. He interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts last offseason as well as the Denver Broncos the previous year.

Carolina is also lining up candidates for general manager after firing Scott Fitterer on Monday. The Panthers requested interviews with Tampa Bay Buccaneers assistant general manager Mike Greenberg, New York Giants assistant general manager Brandon Brown and Kansas City Chiefs vice president of football operations Brandt Tilis, according to NFL Network’s

Wink Martindale resigns as Giants defensive coordinator

Hours after saying he expected his offensive and defensive coordinators to remain with the team, Brian Daboll is facing more coaching staff changes with the New York Giants.

Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale is resigning, according to multiple reports.

Martindale, 60, was Daboll’s choice to run the defense when the head coach took over in 2022.

Amid struggles that led to the defense ranking just 27th in yards allowed and 26 in scoring, reports of a rift between Daboll and Martindale emerged late in the year. Daboll brushed any notion of a problem aside, saying in December, ‘The biggest argument that Wink and I have had is who has the last piece of pizza.’

Martindale said in December he still hoped to return to the franchise.

Earlier on Monday, the Giants fired special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, according to multiple reports.

All quiet in Music City … for now

Among the semi-surprising potential coaching changes is Mike Vrabel’s undetermined status with the Tennessee Titans, whose 6-11, last-place season comes two years after the they were the AFC’s No. 1 playoff seed. (They went one and done in the 2021 playoffs, losing at home to the eventual AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals.)

Since then, it’s seemed the Titans have tried to toe the line between remaining competitive and rebuilding on the fly, trading WR A.J. Brown during the 2022 draft while QB Ryan Tannehill and RB Derrick Henry played out their contracts Sunday. Former GM Jon Robinson was replaced by Ran Carthon during that stretch. And while rookie QB Will Levis played extensively this season, Tennessee seems to be the most unsettled team behind center in an AFC South suddenly loaded with capable young passers elsewhere.

ESPN recently reported organizational changes could be coming and that Vrabel was even open to being traded.

‘Of course I want to be here,’ he said last week. ‘I want to be here as long as we can win and as long as we can do this thing. It’s been great. But it’s also been frustrating this year. Nobody wants to be where we’re at.’

As of Monday afternoon, no further signs of where the Titans are at pertaining to Vrabel’s future, either.

Raiders begin to request interviews

The Las Vegas Raiders are beginning to look around for at least one of their vacancies.

The Raiders requested to interview Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds and San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters for their general manager position, according to multiple reports. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the team also sought to speak with Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown and Buffalo Bills director of player personnel Terrance Gray.

Interim general manager Champ Kelly is expected to be considered for the role, but the Raiders must still comply with the Rooney Rule with a full search process. Kelly could also be a candidate for other openings.

Is Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy safe?

Though ‘Black Monday’ has historically been the time NFL coaches are fired en masse the day after the season ends, it’s hardly unprecedented for them to be terminated after a disappointing postseason performance.

Which leads us to Mike McCarthy. By most any account, the Dallas Cowboys have had a stellar 2023 season. Regular season. ‘America’s Team’ won the NFC East for the second time in three years with a 12-5 record under HC Mike McCarthy and finished as the conference’s No. 2 playoff seed – meaning potentially up to three more home games at AT&T Stadium, where the team has won 16 in a row.

Yet no team has a brighter spotlight on it than Dallas, which hasn’t reached the Super Bowl – or even NFC title round – since the 1995 season, much to the chagrin of owner Jerry Jones. And despite scoring the most points in the league in 2023, on top of everything else, it’s worth wondering how secure McCarthy is after the Cowboys lost to the San Francisco 49ers, the NFC’s top seed this year, in the wild-card and divisional rounds the past two postseasons, respectively.

Jones hardly clarified his position Sunday, when the Cowboys locked up the division with a decisive win at Washington.

“I just think his record speaks for itself,” Jones said of McCarthy following the game.

“I think of what he’s done and that we’ve put ourselves in this position over these last three years, I think that does speak for itself. We’ve got a lot of football left and no small part thanks to Mike.

‘We’ll see how each game goes.”

So — good job, Mike McCarthy. But ‘we’ll see’ … so, stay tuned.

Commanders’ search already taking shape

The Washington Commanders are wasting no time in starting their search to find their next coach after firing Ron Rivera.

Washington requested permission to interview Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, Baltimore Ravens associate head coach/defensive line coach Anthony Weaver, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn for its opening, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Morris was Washington’s defensive backs coach from 2012-14. After helping guide the Rams’ young defense this season, Morris could be a fixture on the coaching interview circuit as he seeks his second job leading a franchise.

Johnson is expected to be one of the most highly sought head-coaching candidates after helping Detroit finish in the top five in both yards per game and scoring in each of the last two seasons.

Washington also requested an interview with Cleveland Browns assistant general manager Glenn Cook and Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham for their top football operations job, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones. Schefter also reported that the team asked to speak with San Francisco 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters and Kansas City Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi, while NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported the team asked to interview Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby.

No changes for Jets

Robert Saleh knew he was safe for next season after receiving an endorsement from Jets owner Woody Johnson. Now, the coach is extending that same security to the rest of his staff.

Saleh said Monday he expects to have all three coordinators back for 2024.

The coach also said he does not expect to make any significant changes to the coaching staff for next season.

Bill Belichick addresses the rumors

The New England Patriots’ future with Bill Belichick remains murky, but the coach finally addressed his standing with team on Monday.

Asked about the possibility of giving up personnel control to remain with team, Belichick didn’t close the door on the hypothetical.

‘Look, I’m for whatever we decide collectively as an organization is the best thing to help our football team,’ Belichick said. ‘I have multiple roles in that, and I rely on a lot of people to help me in those responsibilities. Somebody’s got to have the final say. I have it. I rely on a lot of other people to help. Whatever that process is, I’m only part of it.’

Belichick did not provide a definitive answer, however, on whether he would want to coach another team if he does not remain with the Patriots.

No assistant firings for Indianapolis Colts?

Shane Steichen appears to be standing pat entering Year 2 with the Indianapolis Colts.

Asked Monday about any potential changes to his staff, Steichen said, ‘I believe in continuity.’

Steichen reiterated the point when asked about defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, who led a unit that ranked 24th in yards allowed with 349.8.

Washington Commanders fire Ron Rivera

The one move everyone expected on Monday is now official.

The Commanders decided to move on from Rivera after four seasons, the team announced.

Rivera’s fate seemed to have been sealed some time ago, but Washington ended the season on a league-worst eight-game losing streak to finish at 4-13.

New owner Josh Harris will now embark on his first coaching search with the franchise, with former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers and former Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman hired to assist in the process, according to ESPN.

Whoever takes over should have a prime opportunity to flip the roster. The Commanders own the No. 2 pick in the 2024 NFL draft and currently trail only the Tennessee Titans in effective cap space for next season.

Carolina Panthers fire GM Scott Fitterer

The Carolina Panthers belatedly finished cleaning house Monday morning, firing GM Scott Fitterer six weeks after head coach Frank Reich was relieved of his duties.

‘As we move forward with the new direction for our franchise, I have made the decision that Scott Fitterer will no longer serve as our general manager,’ owner David Tepper said in a statement. ‘I appreciate Scott’s efforts and wish the best for him and his family.’

Despite acquiring the No. 1 overall pick of the 2023 draft and selecting Alabama QB Bryce Young, the Panthers finished with a league-worst 2-15 record. However they won’t be selecting first in this year’s draft because Fitterer traded that choice, along with WR DJ Moore and other capital, to the Chicago Bears in the transaction to obtain Young.

Carolina went 14-37 in three seasons with Fitterer making moves, quite a few which haven’t panned out – including trades for players like QBs Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold and CB C.J. Henderson. Including Young, high-end draft picks made by Fitterer – including CB Jaycee Horn, WR Terrace Marshall Jr., LT Ickey Ekwonu and WR Jonathan Mingo – have yet to mature into foundational players.

New York Giants fire special teams coordinator, per reports

The New York Giants are making changes to their coaching staff, though not at the top.

The team fired special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, according to multiple reports.

McGaughey had been with the team for six seasons.

Giants coach Brian Daboll said earlier Monday morning that he expects to retain offensive coordinator Mike Kafka and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

Atlanta Falcons fire Arthur Smith

The Falcons didn’t wait long to part with Arthur Smith after a season-ending debacle against the New Orleans Saints.

Smith was fired just after midnight, with team owner Arthur Blank making clear his intention to turn the page after three straight 7-10 seasons.

Blank did not issue any specific mandate to Smith entering Year 3, but he did make clear he expected to see progress in the win column. Instead, the Falcons fell short of their first winning season since 2017.
