I’d like to begin by thanking you for reading this piece about my new book, ‘Cancel Culture Dictionary.’ I have to admit I’m a bit embarrassed by the amount of press it’s getting on TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, and even Times Square billboards. That being said, if you saw my grades in high school, you’d understand why people are a little worked up about the idea of a guy like me becoming a published author. This is the literary equivalent of O.J. becoming a marriage counselor.

I kid, which was a thing we did with more regularity when I was growing up in Levittown, N.Y. in the 1980s. It was a simpler time when people just wanted their MTV and the only one who obsessed about using their phone was E.T. Although if that movie were made today, he wouldn’t phone home he’d probably text home and get back to fighting about politics with his fellow aliens on Twitter.

I mention social media because cancel culture wouldn’t be possible without it. Don’t get me wrong, we always had people who’d go after comedians like Dave Chappelle, but in the 80’s we didn’t call them ‘cancel culture’ we called them LOSERS.

Back then we all knew the difference between a joke and a hate crime and everyone rightfully treated comedy like a buffet: if you see a joke you like, you throw it on your tray. If you don’t like a joke, you simply ignore it and keep walking. There’s no need to hold up the line and argue with the chef because everyone gets their own tray. Besides, who the hell cares who laughs at what?

They’re just JOKES!

Unfortunately, people today are not only arguing with the chefs, they’re filming it and posting the confrontations online in hopes of scoring the digital dopamine we call likes.

Comedy, music and movies used to be places Americans could go to put their differences aside but we’ve lost that sense of escapism because everything you consume these days gets you trampled in a social justice stampede.

That’s cancel culture in a nutshell. A group of grievance hunters who police traditional sources of joy for potential offenses that will allow them to weaponize your outrage into their clout.

They’re cultural arsonists but the one thing every cancel has in common is that fact that once the outrage mob gets its way they move on without achieving any tangible progress for anyone but themselves.

When you go after superficial items like the Aunt Jemima syrup bottle it doesn’t improve the lives of anyone, least of all the black family who received 130 years of royalty checks because their relative portrayed Aunt Jemima. That’s right, Aunt Jemima was ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY. Same age as Mitch McConnell.

Sending the Pancake Lady off to that big breakfast nook in the sky hasn’t raised test scores at failing city schools and the only thing higher than the crime rates are the people who think woke bail reforms are working.

Prior to cancel culture nobody had an issue with Native American mascots because we all knew they weren’t being chosen to mock the culture but to celebrate it. After all, there’s a certain nobility to calling yourself a chief or a brave. And if you don’t believe me ask Elizabeth Warren.

Yet the Washington Redskins logo was canceled despite the fact that it was donated to the NFL as a ‘forever gift’ by a tribe that wanted the team to be called the Redskins. The logo was meant to symbolize the highest level of elite warriors chosen to paint their faces red and lead the tribe into battle.

You can still tell me you don’t like the Redskins name but you absolutely can’t tell me that changing the halftime show has lead to any improvements in the quality of life on Native American reservations.

And therein lies the biggest fault with cancel culture: it’s not activism, it’s slacktivism, that allows superficial victories to masquerade as societal progress.

Sadly, it’s crushed our ability to coexist politically by creating division in areas that used to provide us with common culture. Comedy, music and movies used to be places Americans could go to put their differences aside but we’ve lost that sense of escapism because everything you consume these days gets you trampled in a social justice stampede.

When I was a kid, my white parents yelled at me for eating too much ice cream. Today my Ben & Jerry’s ice cream yells at me for having WHITE PARENTS. I promise it was never supposed to work this way.

Long story short, cancel culture and the age of weaponized censorship has broken our compass and left us fighting all the wrong battles. But in writing this book I am not issuing a call to arms. If anything, it’s a call for everyone to chill out and ignore these grievance-grifting clowns. Now THAT, would be addition by subtraction.

Thanks for reading and if you like my book, PLEASE tell a friend. Of course, if you have any complaints whatsoever, please forward them to Greg Gutfeld.

The Biden administration sent millions in government assistance to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for FY24 amid allegations of terrorist ties against federal employees prior to the administration’s pause of new funding.

The administration announced a pause on new funding would be enacted last week over allegations that some of its members were ‘involved’ in the Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attack in Israel. The U.S. government had already earmarked $51 million for FY24 prior to the pause.

The funds were a result of an emergency request for Gaza and the West Bank following the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks on Israel, and the war that resulted.

‘The pause decision was well after the initial tranche to UNRWA’s oPt Flash Appeal of $51M,’ a State Department spokesperson told Fox News Digital. ‘That funding was obligated back in mid-November in the early part of the crisis, about 100 days before the Jan. 26 pause.’

Some politicians criticized the spending following the State Department’s pause in funding. Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell blasted President Biden on the floor on Tuesday for the aid, while calling for a stronger retaliatory response against Iranian proxies.

‘As I’ve said before, there is no room for the tired cast of corruption and terrorism in the future of the Palestinian people. As such, Senate Republicans will not accept any legislation that allows taxpayer dollars to fund UNRWA,’ McConnell said.

At the time the pause was implemented, about $300,000 had been approved for UNRWA but not yet obligated, the State Department spokesperson said. The approved funds were frozen as a result of the pause.

‘No further funds will be approved for UNRWA during the pause,’ the department said. ‘The majority of UNRWA’s funding comes from donors other than the United States.’

According to a USAID fact sheet, the funds were assigned to go toward food assistance, protection, shelter and settlements in the West Bank and Gaza.

The Biden administration has sent hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to UNRWA in recent years — arguing the agency provides much needed humanitarian aid to Palestinian territories — after reversing former President Trump’s decision to cut funding to the group.

Critics have long argued that UNRWA is directly tied to Hamas terrorists.

On Tuesday, New Jersey GOP Rep. Chris Smith introduced a bill, known as the ‘Stop Support United Nations Relief and Works Agency Act of 2024,’ that would cut off U.S. funding.

Twelve UNRWA employees were allegedly ‘involved’ in the Oct. 7 attack, and additional U.S. funding could resume subject to an investigation from the United Nations.

UNRWA, citing information provided by Israeli authorities, fired the accused employees last week and announced an investigation ‘to protect the agency’s ability to deliver humanitarian assistance’ and ‘establish the truth without delay,’ Reuters reported.

Meanwhile, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters Tuesday the federal government supports ‘the work that UNRWA does’ and called it ‘critical’ to the region.

‘There is no other humanitarian player in Gaza who can provide food, medicine at the scale that UNRWA does,’ Miller said. ‘We want to see that work continued, which is why it is so important that the United Nations take this matter seriously, that they investigate it, that there is accountability for anyone who is found to engage in wrongdoing, and that they take whatever other measures are appropriate to ensure that this sort of thing cannot happen again.’

House Republicans have subpoenaed Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis amid allegations of misconduct, Fox News has learned.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, subpoenaed Willis as she is accused of misusing federal funds in Georgia. She is also alleged to have fired a whistleblower from her office over the same issue.

Willis has made headlines over the past two years as she has charged former President Trump with allegedly attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

The subpoena is for documents related to the Fulton County DA’s office receipt and use of federal funds.

The subpoena requires Willis to turn over ‘all documents and communications referring or relating to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office’s receipt and use of federal funds, including but not limited to, federal funds from the Department of Justice’s Office Programs, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.’

In addition, she is being asked to turn over all documents from the same offices ‘referring to or relating to any allegations of the misuse of federal funds.’

Willis’s office responded to the subpoena Friday, shortly after it was made public.

‘These false allegations are included in baseless litigation filed by a holdover employee from the previous administration who was terminated for cause,’ she said in a statement obtained by Fox News. ‘The courts that have ruled found no merit in these claims. We expect the same result in any pending litigation.’

She added: ‘Any examination of the records of our grant programs will find that they are highly effective and conducted in cooperation with the Department of Justice and in compliance with all Department of Justice requirements. Our federal grant programs are focused on helping at-risk youth and seeking justice for sexual assault victims who were too long ignored. Our federal grant-funded Sexual Assault Kit Initiative has been cited by the United States Attorney General as a model program. We are proud of our grant programs and our partnership with the Department of Justice that makes Fulton County a safer, more just place.’

It comes after the Judiciary Committee requested the documents on three different occasions, in Aug. 2023, Sept. 2023, and Dec. 2023.

‘To date, you have failed to comply voluntarily with any of our requests,’ the committee wrote in a letter to Willis.

It added: ‘The Committee’s oversight of your office’s use of federal grant funds is particularly relevant in light of public whistleblower allegations that it has misused federal funding.’

She stands accused of using part a $488,000 federal grant allocated for the purpose of helping at-risk youths for ‘frivolous, unrelated expenses,’ the letter said. It went on to say the money was used for Macbooks, clothes, and travel.

Trump has pleaded not guilty in the Willis-led case.

The United Kingdom could recognize an independent Palestinian state before an official process creating one is agreed upon between Israel and the Palestinians, according to Britain’s top diplomat.

Foreign Secretary David Cameron told The Associated Press in Lebanon on Thursday that his country could move unilaterally to recognize a Palestinian state before what could be yearslong negotiations on a two-state solution, calling it ‘absolutely vital for the long-term peace and security of the region.’

‘What we need to do is give the Palestinian people a horizon towards a better future, the future of having a state of their own,’ added Cameron, also a former British prime minister. ‘It could be something that we consider as this process, as this advance to a solution, becomes more real.’

While the idea of a two-state solution has been floated in the past, there have been no substantive negotiations since 2009.

Western countries, including Britain and the U.S., support the idea of an independent Palestinian state existing alongside Israel, believing the two-state outcome could be a solution to hostilities across the region.

Cameron said the idea would only be pursued after a cease-fire in Gaza is implemented, saying the first step must be a ‘pause in the fighting’ in Gaza which could eventually turn into ‘a permanent, sustainable cease-fire.’

U.K. recognition of a Palestinian state ‘can’t come at the start of the process, but it doesn’t have to be at the very end of the process,’ he added. The U.K. would also recognize it in the United Nations, he said.

He clarified that no recognition could come while Hamas, which is designated a foreign terrorist group, continued to rule in Gaza ‘because you can’t have a two-state solution with Gaza still controlled by the people responsible for Oct. 7.’

The line was a reference to the Hamas-led terror attack on Israeli border communities on Oct. 7, 2023, that left more than 1,200 people in Israel dead.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the creation of an independent Palestinian state after the war.

The gold market saw a significant sell-off Friday morning, as unexpectedly strong job market data undermined investor hopes for imminent Federal Reserve rate cuts anytime soon. Of course, market conditions can change rapidly, and analysts’ wide scattershot opinions on gold price targets in 2024 reflect this reality.

So far, the SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD), a proxy for the yellow metal, had a volatile run since bottoming out in October, but its uptrend remains intact. This is mainly due to its series of higher lows. But if you look at the highs, its momentum seems to have been stalling over the last three months, unable to close above its December high of $193.18. However, if you take a longer-term view, that resistance level (or “range”) has held over the last four years.

Gold Prices Failing Four Times in Four Years!

CHART 1. WEEKLY CHART OF SPDR GOLD SHARES (GLD). Price has tried and failed to break above 195 over the last four years.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

Analyst price targets for GLD in 2024 vary, ranging from between the low 180s to soaring past the $200 mark per share. Pinning down where it’ll land is as murky as predicting the Fed’s next move on slashing interest rates or forecasting when the BRICS might shake the US dollar from its global throne. But let’s take a closer look at the near-term price action.

Gold (GLD) Price Today

CHART 2. DAILY CHART OF GLD. In a volatile and convoluted price environment, it helps to use volume, as well as support and resistance along with other indicators, to identify potential zones of “confluence” in a market’s structure.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

GLD’s failure to challenge the November and December highs indicates that its uptrend may have shifted to a range-bound dynamic.

When GLD bottomed out in October, note the significant shift from selling pressure to buying pressure on the Chaikin Money Flow.Peaking in mid-October, buying pressure has been steadily declining and is now in the negative, indicating that there may not be enough momentum to challenge, let alone close above, the November and December highs.

What You Should Look Out For if You’re Bullish on GLD

If you’re bullish on GLD, and if the pullback thesis is correct, what should you look out for?

Note the largest bar on the Volume-by-Price indicator, which tells you that a large amount of trading occurred between $182.50 and $184.50.You can use this level to anticipate potential support, and you might want to set a price alert at $184.50 to alert you when the price has entered this range. The Volume-by-Price bar also coincides with May, June, and November resistance levels (see highest blue dotted line), the December swing low (see lower blue dotted line), and the 100-day simple moving average. You want the Stochastic Oscillator to get near or fall under the 20 line, signaling an oversold condition. Most importantly, you want to see a strong bounce upward with relatively high momentum and a CMF reading above the zero line before entering a long position.

Seasonality Warning

Seasonality is more of a contextualizing tool than a predictive tool. However, the historical consistency of the context can sometimes be predictive. If you’re wondering how GLD might perform relative to the broader market, the seasonal picture gives a warning.

CHART 3. 10-YEAR SEASONAL PERFORMANCE OF GOLD VS S&P 500. For context’s sake, note that GLD is entering into its weakest season months.

In short, GLD’s strongest months, November and December, have passed. Look at the numbers at the bottom of the bars to see the 10-year average return of gold against the S&P 500 ($SPX). We’re heading into a series of weak months, seasonally speaking. But again, this is context, not prediction. And given the volatile geopolitical situation, the conditions influencing gold prices can change on a dime.

How To Set a Technical Price Alert

Setting a technical alert at these support and resistance levels would be helpful as you weigh your potential entry points against any market developments that may influence your decision.

To access the Technical Alert Workbench, follow these steps:

Log in to your StockCharts account. At the top of any page, click on Your Dashboard.Click the Alerts or the New button in the Your Alerts panel.Choose which type of alert you want to create from the Alert Type buttons at the top left. To create a price alert, select Price Alert as the alert type.Add GLD in the symbol box and set your price trigger.Choose how you wish to be notified and click the Save Alert button.

The Bottom Line

Friday’s gold market nosedive, thanks to unexpectedly strong job data, dampened hopes for Fed rate cuts. Analysts have no clear consensus regarding price targets, as their predictions vary significantly. However, technical indicators can provide valuable insights in such situations. The Volume-by-Price indicator, alongside other indicators, suggests a reasonable means of locating potential support, which can be helpful to those looking to go long. However, it’s crucial to consider the global context, as the monetary value and worldwide trading of gold can have long-term implications for its price.

Cap weighted vs Equal Weighted.

Sometimes, you need to look a little further. And concerning the rotations in Consumer Discretionary stocks, this is one of those “sometimes”.

On this Relative Rotation Graph, holding the cap-weighted sectors, XLY is making a nasty turn back down into the lagging quadrant after a brief period inside improving.

At first sight, this would lead to the suggestion or conclusion that Consumer Discretionary stocks are rotating out of favor and are setting up for a new down-leg in an already established relative downtrend.

However…

Looking at the RRG that shows the equal weight versions of the S&P sectors the tail on Consumer Discretionary is travelling at a completely different path. It’s much more positive.

RSPD just rotated into the leading quadrant after a period through lagging and improving.

From this rotation, the Consumer Discretionary sector looks much healthier than the cap-weighted rotation of XLY.

Mega-Caps Are Dragging XLY Down

The first takeaway from this observation is that the heavy-weight names inside XLY are dragging the cap-weighted sector down. As a result, we can conclude that the second or third-tier stocks in this universe are doing pretty well.

Another way of visualizing this relationship, not only for Consumer Discretionary but for all cap-weighted vs. weighted sectors, is by plotting their rations on a Relative Rotation Graph and using $ONE as the benchmark.

This shows the tail for XLY:RSPD is rapidly moving into the lagging quadrant, confirming that rotation favors non-large/mega-cap stocks in the consumer discretionary sector.

And finally, we can look at the relationship between large- / and small-cap Consumer Discretionary similarly.

This shows the XLY:PSCD tail also moving deeper into the lagging quadrant.

Looking For Stocks

With this knowledge, I want to see if I can find some stocks worth looking at. Therefore, my pool of stocks to go through is stocks that are either in the S&P400 (MidCap) or S&P600(SmallCap) AND in the Consumer Discretionary Sector.

I can easily find those by using the advanced scan workbench.

Running this scan returns 172 symbols. So I need to trim this list down a little further. I am going to do that by adding a simple requirement like the RSI needs to be above 60. That ensures that the price is already moving higher I am adding the requirement that the Close must be above its 10-day moving average AND that the RSI must be above 60.

Running this scan results in a list of 33 symbols, which is very manageable.

Plotting Them on a RRG

After saving that list as a ChartList, I can then plot them on a Relative Rotation Graph

After visually inspecting the rotation of these tails and their price charts, I ended up with four potentially interesting stocks.

HBI – HanesBrands Inc.

The chart that got my attention is HBI. On the RRG, it is showing a nice rotation back into a positive RRG-Heading and moving into the improving quadrant. Remember that the group as a whole is already showing strength. So, HBI is trailing that development, which means that it has the potential to catch up within the sector.

After a long downtrend in which HBI lost around 80% of its value in three years, the stock started to bottom in the second half of 2023, and this week, it broke out above the resistance offered by its previous two highs.

This move opens the way for a further rise towards the next resistance area, around 5.5-6.0. Which is roughly 20% upside potential with support only 5-6% below current levels.

Walmart already has a huge U.S. footprint. But the retail giant sees room to get even bigger.

The company plans to build or convert more than 150 large-format stores over the next five years, it said Wednesday. Some of the locations will be expanded from a smaller location into a Supercenter with a full range of groceries and merchandise, but the majority will be new stores, Josh Havens, a company spokesman, said.

Walmart declined to say how much the new stores will cost and where they will be located. The company already has more than 4,600 stores across the country, and nearly 600 Sam’s Club warehouses. Sam’s Club also is in expansion mode, with plans to open more than 30 new stores in the U.S.

The big-box retailer is the largest private employer in the U.S. with about 1.6 million employees. About 90% of the U.S. population already lives with 10 miles of a Walmart store. With the expansion, Walmart is signaling that it sees its brick-and-mortar locations as a key part of the future, despite heightened competition with online players like Amazon and Shein, and its own push for growth of online sales and its third-party marketplace.

Walmart is also building on its relative strength compared with other retailers, which have taken a bigger hit from U.S. consumers pulling back on discretionary merchandise. As the nation’s largest grocer by revenue and a well-known discounter, Walmart has better weathered inflation and even attracted more upper-income households to its stores.

Its stock hit an all-time high last year, and the company on Tuesday announced a 3-for-1 stock split.

In a post on the company’s website Wednesday, Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner said the retailer plans to start 12 new store projects this year and will convert one of its smaller locations into a Walmart Supercenter. The move to open or expand locations is in addition to the company’s plans to renovate other stores, he added.

Furner said the new stores will reflect Walmart’s more modern look, which it is rolling out more broadly. The “store of the future” design has a sleeker layout that emphasizes the retailer’s fashion-forward apparel brands, adds technology like scannable QR codes and features sharper signage.

New stores will also have more sustainability features, such as energy-efficient lighting, he said.

Walmart’s store expansion was first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The hometown fans of the Toronto Maple Leafs will know exactly who to root for in Saturday afternoon’s NHL All-Star Game, being held at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena.

Team Matthews, led by Toronto’s Auston Mattthews and Morgan Rielly, snatched up Maple Leafs teammates William Nylander and Mitch Marner with their first two picks in Thursday’s All-Star player draft.

Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov, the NHL’s leading scorer, went first overall to Team Hughes. That team features every Vancouver Canucks player who was on the team as of Sunday: Quinn Hughes, Elias Pettersson, Thatcher Demko, Brock Boeser and J.T. Miller. Elias Lindholm, who was acquired from the Calgary Flames on Monday, was chosen by Team MacKinnon.

Nathan MacKinnon’s first pick was buddy and fellow Nova Scotian Sidney Crosby. The Pittsburgh Penguins star wasn’t able to be at the draft but is arriving later. A young hockey player got to skate up in his place.

Connor McDavid’s team went with a goalie and another Connor, the Winnipeg Jets’ Connor Hellebuyck, for its first pick.

This draft was different from previous ones. There was no player sitting there wondering who would be taken last, as Phil Kessel was in the first All-Star draft. There also was no car awarded to the last pick. Instead, the remaining four players – Tomas Hertl, Vincent Trocheck, Frank Vatrano and Oliver Bjorkstrand – chose an envelope from Hall of Famer Dave Keon to let them know their team.

Team MacKinnon will face Team McDavid in the first 20-minute three-on-three game Saturday (3 p.m. ET, ABC), followed by Team Hughes vs. Team Matthews in the second game. The winners will meet in the finale for a winner-take-all, $1 million prize.

Notes from the All-Star draft

Canucks coach Rick Tocchet will have five of his players on Team Hughes. The other coaching assignments: Bruins’ Jim Montgomery (Team Matthews), Jets’ Rick Bowness (Team MacKinnon) and Rangers’ Peter Laviolette (Team McDavid). … Auston Matthews, known for his moustache, said Filip Forsberg had the NHL’s best one before choosing him. … Connor McDavid called Sergei Bobrovsky ‘Sam’ before quickly correcting himself. To be fair, his team had chosen Florida’s Sam Reinhart with the pick before him. … Team Hughes, which had back-to-back picks in the snake draft, chose forward Brock Boeser before being told they had to take a goalie with the pick. They chose Kings goaltender Cam Talbot, then Boeser. … Team MacKinnon chose Capitals forward Tom Wilson and Flyers forward Travis Konecny, saying it was looking for an ‘agitator.’ … Chicago, Vegas and Calgary have no representatives this weekend because of injuries and because of the Elias Lindholm trade. Lindholm had his new Canucks jersey on at Thursday’s event.

The Las Vegas Raiders are ‘expected’ to name Kingsbury their offensive coordinator under new head coach Antonio Pierce, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Media.

This will mark Kingsbury’s return to the NFL following his stint with the Arizona Cardinals, where he led the team to a 28-37-1 record in four seasons as head coach.

Kingsbury was named the Cardinals’ head coach in January 2019 and the team drafted quarterback Kyler Murray out of Oklahoma with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft several months later. Despite signing a six-year extension in March 2022, Kingsbury was fired in January 2023 after a disappointing 4-13 campaign.

LAS VEGAS RAIDERS hire Antonio Pierce as head coach following interim gig

SUPER BOWL CENTRAL: Latest Super Bowl 58 news, stats, odds, matchups and more.

Kingsbury reportedly turned down interviews for offensive coordinator positions after his termination and instead opted for a vacation. He ultimately returned to college football for the 2023-24 season, where he served on Lincoln Riley’s staff at USC as a senior offensive analyst and quarterbacks coach for 2022 Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Caleb Williams.

Kingsbury previously served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Houston (2010–2011) and Texas A&M (2012), where coached Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel. He served as the head coach of his alma mater, Texas Tech (2013–2018), where he coached future Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes from 2014 to 2016.

Kingsbury will join the staff of Pierce, who was named the head coach last month after leading the Raiders to a 5-4 record as the interim head coach following Josh McDaniels’ mid-season firing.
