The Kansas City Chiefs are set to be without kicker Harrison Butker for their Week 14 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.

That said, it seems like the eight-year veteran will soon be back in action as the Chiefs chase an unprecedented Super Bowl three-peat.

Butker was placed on IR ahead of the Chiefs’ Week 11 matchup with the Buffalo Bills because of a calf injury. He is eligible to return from the injury list after four games, but will he play in Week 15 against the Cleveland Browns?

Here’s the latest on Butker’s injury and what to know about his status moving forward.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Harrison Butker injury update

Andy Reid provided an update about Butker during a news conference on Wednesday. He said that Butker is ‘potentially’ on target to return in Week 15, but wouldn’t commit to the veteran kicker doing so just yet.

‘We’ll see how he does in the next week or two,’ Reid said, per A to Z Sports’ Charles Goldman.

When will Harrison Butker return?

The Chiefs haven’t yet provided a clear timetable on Butker’s potential return to action. Reid said Butker could ‘potentially’ return in Week 15, but the Chiefs want to see how healthy he is before making a decision.

Kansas City may also be happy to wait and see where it is in the AFC standings before choosing to activate Butker. The Chiefs enter Week 14 with an 11-1 record and are playing the Chargers, their main competition in the AFC West.

If the Chiefs beat the Chargers, they will have a stranglehold on the division. That will give them the leeway needed to ease Butker back into action and prepare him for another postseason run.

Kansas City will have 21 days to return Butker to the 53-man roster once it does designate him to return from IR. So, while he could kick as early as Week 15, the Chiefs may be willing to let him sit until he is as close to 100% as possible.

Who is the Chiefs kicker after Harrison Butker’s injury?

The Chiefs are relying on journeyman Matthew Wright as their kicker at present. The 28-year-old has made 47-of-55 career field goals and has gone 4-of-5 for the Chiefs this season.

Kansas City initially signed Spencer Shrader to replace Butker, but Shrader suffered a right hamstring injury that landed him on IR ahead of Week 12.

The Chiefs will likely entrust Wright, who also served as an injury fill-in for Butker last season, as their kicker while both Butker and Shrader are unavailable.

MIAMI — The FIFA Club World Cup may be a summer away, but excitement for the tournament reached new heights this week.

Even President-elect Donald Trump shared his enthusiasm with a video statement during Thursday’s group draw for the 32-team tournament feature some of the best soccer teams from around the world.

“The event is going to be incredible. I will try to be there. If I can, I would. We’ll see what happens,” Trump said before praising FIFA president Gianni Infantino. “But I just want to say you’re led by Gianni. He’s a winner. He’s the President, and I’m the President. And we’ve known each other for a long time.

“Soccer is going through the roof in America, as everybody knows,” Trump added. “It’s doing fantastically well.”

Lionel Messi’s presence with Inter Miami and Major League Soccer has surely helped.

Messi and Inter Miami will play the Club World Cup opening game against Egyptian powerhouse Al Alhy in Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on June 15, 2025. They’re joined by Brazilian side Palmeiras and Portuguese side Porto in Group A of the tournament.

“It’s fantastic to be able to open the Club World Cup here in Miami at Hard Rock Stadium, and show the world what Lionel Messi has done which is not only change this sport in American, but change the perception of American soccer around the world,” Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas said.

“The eyes of the world will be here, and hundreds of millions of people will watch that game. It’s a great challenge but a great opportunity for us.”

Paris Saint-Germain (France) and Atletico Madrid (Spain) lead Group B, where the Seattle Sounders will open against Brazilian side Botafogo at Lumen Field in Seattle. The Sounders, the second MLS team in the field, qualified after winning the 2022 Concacaf Champions Cup.

“You’re looking at how you’re going to grow the game of football in the U.S. That’s the important thing,” said baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr., who is part of the Sounders’ ownership group.

Among other teams in the field: Bayern Munich (Germany) leads Group C, Chelsea (England) will be featured in Group D, Inter Milan (Italy) headlines Group E, Borussia Dortmund (Germany) is in Group F.

Manchester City (England) and Juventus (Italy) headline Group G, while Real Madrid (Spain) and Al Hilal (Saudi Arabia) will be a must-watch opener in Group H.

Each group will play three matches during the group stage. The top two teams from each group will advance to the knockout stage.

“It’s about inclusivity, it’s about bringing clubs from all over the world, the 32 best clubs and best players from all over the world together,” Infantino said.

Including Messi and Inter Miami, however, did not come without some controversy.

Inter Miami was selected by FIFA last month as the host nation after winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield, the regular-season title, this season.

While the Los Angeles Galaxy and New York Red Bulls will play for the MLS Cup title on Saturday, MLS commissioner Don Garber had no problem with Inter Miami joining Seattle in the tournament. He also had no part in FIFA’s decision.

“There was no rule that said the MLS Cup winner had to be in the Club World Cup,” Garber said. “I have no interest in anything other than what I think is going to be best for this showcase, best for our league. I am supportive of the decision FIFA made, and I’m excited to put Miami and Seattle in a global media deal that’ll be seen around the world.”

Pete Hegseth, the former National Guard officer who President-elect Trump has tapped to lead the Department of Defense, said he’s had ‘great’ conversations with senators amid efforts to shore up his confirmation and was ‘standing right here in this fight.’

On Thursday, Hegseth said he refused to back down from a fight as his nomination remains in limbo amid drinking and sexual misconduct allegations. He has denied any wrongdoing.

‘We’ve had great conversations, about who I am and what I believe,’ Hegseth said of his meetings with senators. ‘And, frankly, the man I am today, because of my faith in my lord and savior Jesus Christ and my wife Jenny right here, I’m a different man than I was years ago.’

‘And that’s a redemption story that I think a lot of Americans appreciate,’ he added. ‘And I know from fellow vets that I’ve spent time with, they resonate with that as well. You fight, you go through tough things in tough places on behalf of your country. And sometimes that changes you a little bit.’

An email was recently leaked from Hegseth’s mother, Penelope Hegseth, in which she was critical of his past relationships with women. She joined ‘FOX and Friends’ on Wednesday morning to set the record straight, saying she wrote the email in an impassioned moment after her son’s divorce, but apologized hours after sending it.

Hegseth’s mother also said she did not believe any of the accusations against him.

Multiple sources confirmed to Fox News that Trump is reportedly considering nominating Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as defense secretary in place of Hegseth amid the allegations against him.

But Hegseth brushed off the potential replacement, telling reporters that he was prepared to fight.

‘As long as Donald Trump wants me in this fight, I’m going to be standing right here in this fight, fighting to bring our Pentagon back to what it needs to be,’ he said.

Hegseth also told reporters that he doesn’t answer to the media, only to Trump, God, his family and the senators slated to vote on his confirmation.

On Thursday, Hegseth said the conversations with senators have been ‘robust, candid at times with great questions on policy and personality.’

‘So we’re going to earn those votes,’ he said. ‘We’re fighting all the way through the tape. I’m grateful to have the president’s support, because his vision for this Department of Defense is to bring it back to its core capacity of deterring our enemies and, if necessary, defeating those enemies.’

The House of Representatives rejected a bid by Democrats to force the release of an ethics report into former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., on Thursday evening.

Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., filed a measure known as a ‘privileged resolution’ to make the Gaetz report public, a maneuver that forces House leaders to take up a resolution within two legislative days.

It was shot down before a final vote, however, on a margin of 206 to 198.

House lawmakers voted to refer Casten’s resolution to the relevant committee for consideration. It’s highly unlikely a GOP-controlled committee would take it up, however, meaning the move essentially defeated the Democrat’s effort.

Just one Republican, Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., voted with Democrats to table the measure.

Gaetz abruptly resigned from Congress last month in a now-failed bid to be President-elect Donald Trump’s next attorney general.

His resignation also came just before the House Ethics Committee was set to consider the release of its report into the Florida Republican.

The panel had been conducting a years-long investigation into accusations against Gaetz that involved sex with a minor and illicit drug use.

But its jurisdiction ended when Gaetz left Congress, and Republicans have shown little appetite to buck tradition and release a report on someone who has departed Congress.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters last month that he was against releasing the report.

‘I do not believe that that is an appropriate thing. It doesn’t follow our rules and traditionsand there is a reason for that. That would open up Pandora’s box and I don’t think that’s a healthy thing for the institution,’ he said.

Meanwhile, the House Ethics Committee has met twice since Gaetz’s resignation and failed to come to an agreement both times on whether to release the report.

The most recent meeting occurred hours before Thursday’s vote.

Gaetz, for his part, has consistently denied any wrongdoing. A federal investigation into the allegations ended without charges against Gaetz.

President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Department of Defense, Pete Hegseth, spent another day courting support from Republican senators on Capitol Hill and taking a few questions from reporters while he was at it.

The military vet turned ‘Fox & Friends’ co-host met with senators Rick Scott, R-Fla.; Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss; Mike Rounds, R-S.D.; Ron Johnson, R-Wis.; Tom Cotton, R-Ark.; and Sen.-elect Jim Banks, R-Ind., Thursday.

The meetings followed others Hegseth held earlier in the week with GOP senators, including Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., who will be the next chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and incoming Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D.

Hegseth has been facing a mountain of criticism with accusations against him ranging from fiscal mismanagement to alcoholism to sexual misconduct. Nevertheless, Hegseth said Thursday while walking between meetings on Capitol Hill that Trump supports him ‘fully.’

‘I’ll tell you why I support him,’ Scott told reporters after his meeting Thursday with Hegseth. ‘I admire people who are willing to put on the uniform and lead troops into battle. … When he goes in the Department of Defense, he will walk in with the mentality that he’s going to take care of our warfighters.’

Scott added that he will do ‘everything’ he can to ensure Hegseth is confirmed.

‘Pete Hegseth won’t back down from the media or the Pentagon bureaucracy,’ Banks added after his own one-on-one meeting with the defense nominee. ‘And he won’t back down from China, Russia or Iran. He will help President Trump make America strong again.’

Between meetings on Capitol Hill Thursday, Hegseth was pressed about his meeting a day earlier with Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa. Ernst said earlier Thursday morning she was not yet willing to throw her support behind him.

‘Productive meeting. Excellent,’ Hegseth said of his meeting with Ernst as he was peppered with questions during his meeting with Rounds.

‘Constructive, candid. It was great,’ Hegseth told a different reporter.

When asked if the allegations about him were a topic of his conversation with Ernst, Hegseth declined to comment further, citing the private nature of their conversation.

‘It’s been a wonderful process,’ Hegseth told reporters Thursday. ‘There’s an incredible amount of knowledge in the U.S. Senate — in the Senate Armed Services Committee — men and women who have studied these issues, have invested their lives in it. And as someone who is hoping to earn their support as the nominee for secretary of defense, I welcome that knowledge, I welcome that advice. And that’s why we’re here in all these meetings.’

Hegseth’s meetings Thursday coincided with visits to Capitol Hill by Tesla CEO Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. The pair convened on Capitol Hill to discuss their new role running President-elect Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency with Thune.

The broader stock market indexes sold off slightly ahead of the November Non-Farm Payrolls data, which will be released Friday morning. Depending on which way the data goes, the market could sell off further or continue its bullish ride. If the market sells off, which stocks are flashing buy signals? To help me identify stocks to watch, I ran my StockCharts Technical Rank (SCTR) scan to identify which stocks were gaining technical strength.

My SCTR scan filtered 53 stocks and ETFs, which I sorted based on the universe (U) (the scan syntax is at the end of the article). I prefer to look at large-cap stocks and identify which ones are potential investing candidates. Going down Thursday’s list, the first stock that interested me was Cisco Systems (CSCO), mainly because of its simple and clear-looking chart.

Simplicity Attracts

The weekly chart of CSCO stock shows it reached a new all-time high on a relatively sharp upside move since the week of September 9. CSCO’s stock price is trading above its 5-week exponential moving average (EMA) and its 15-week simple moving average (SMA).

FIGURE 1. WEEKLY CHART OF CSCO STOCK. The SCTR score is just above 76, the stock price is trading above its 5-week EMA, and its RSI has crossed above 70. There’s no indication of a reversal in the uptrend.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

The SCTR score has crossed above the 76 threshold, and its relative strength index (RSI) is just above 70. From the data in the Symbol Summary page for CSCO, the stock is up 29.29% over one year. These are all indications that the price action in CSCO stock remains bullish.

Let’s now examine the daily chart of CSCO stock to determine whether it is worth buying and what the ideal entry and exit points will be. The daily chart confirms the shorter-term trend is still up. The upward-sloping trendline coincides with the 21-day EMA, and trading volume is slightly increasing.

FIGURE 2. DAILY CHART OF CSCO STOCK. The stock has retained its uptrend bouncing off its 21-day EMA. CSCO is also outperforming the Nasdaq Composite slightly. The Full Stochastic oscillator indicates the stock is overbought.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

CSCO’s performance shows it’s outperforming the Nasdaq Composite ($COMPQ) by 15.64% (see panel below CSCO stock price chart). The Full Stochastic oscillator shows the stock is overbought but, as you can see from past data, the oscillator can stay overbought for an extended period.

The Game Plan

CSCO may not be as glamorous as some of the other mega-cap tech stocks, but its path is a steady and slow uptrend. This may be the reason it’s outperforming the Nasdaq and possibly some of the other more volatile mega-cap stocks, such as NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA), Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), and Apple, Inc. (AAPL).

If CSCO’s price action continues grinding higher slowly and steadily, I would look for a pullback, which might be to the 21-day EMA or above. I’ll watch the market closely on Friday after the November NFP report is released to see if there’s a selloff or if market continues rising higher.

As long as the technicals stay in place for an uptrend, the stock is a buy. When any of the indicators no longer support the uptrend, you abandon the stock or do not even consider buying it.

Sometimes, as Bruce Lee would say, “Simplicity is the key to brilliance.”

Lou Carnesecca liked to wear sweaters. He had no idea what he was creating when he grabbed one before a basketball game in early 1985.

Carnesecca, who died Nov. 30 at 99, had 526 wins at St. John’s University. He will be remembered at his funeral Friday, and long thereafter, as a Hall of Fame coach and a loving husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend.

To many sports fans, he will also be remembered, at least in part, for his ‘lucky sweater.’ It was brown with ‘V’ shapes across the front, a gift from an Italian Olympic team coach. It happened to be in his closet when he was leaving for an away game.

According to the New York Post, his wife, Mary, suggested he bring a sweater on a road trip to Pittsburgh; she was worried the arena would be drafty. Carnesecca had a bad cough.

He wore it during the game, despite needling from his players, and the team won. Carnesecca kept wearing it. He had it on when, behind clutch play from his star player, Chris Mullin, St. John’s upset top-ranked Georgetown on the road.

The win set up a No. 1 (St. John’s) vs. No. 2 (Georgetown) dream matchup on Feb. 27, 1985, in New York at the height of the Big East Conference’s power.

St. John’s had a winning streak that had hit 19. Carnesecca was still wearing the sweater.

‘That’s all I am is a sweater guy,’ Carnesecca said in a documentary about the game. ‘I thought I was a great tactician, great strategist. You guys just think the sweater won all the games.’

John Thompson, Georgetown’s Hall of Fame coach, decided he would try and one-up his on-court rival (and close friend off of it) by donning the same sweater.

Or did he?

Thompson wanted a sweater just like Carnesecca’s. He said in the documentary he sent a former player who lived in New York by subway to St. John’s campus in Queens to find one.

A few days after Thompson died in August 2020, this is how Mike Riley, his longtime assistant coach, recalled the situation unfolding: ‘Somebody called him back. Somebody that knew somebody that knew somebody else, and they said they could get him a duplicate of it. … And (Thompson) said he’d need it in, obviously, Triple-XL.

“And it wasn’t a sweater,’ Riley told USA TODAY Sports. ‘It winds up being like a T-shirt. Now how they did that I have no idea. But coach gets this T-shirt, he puts it on in the locker room and then he comes out.’

The towering presence of Thompson, a 6-foot-10 former collegiate and NBA center, drew attention at any game he coached. Now imagine him appearing, his trademark white towel draped across his shoulder, in front of more than 19,500 fans at Madison Square Garden.

‘If you ever see the video of it, he’s walking around, and he’s actually got his arms folded because he doesn’t want to let anybody see it with his jacket kind of closed,’ Riley says, ‘and he’s got the towel trying to help him to cover it.

‘He’s walking back and forth and walking back and forth and it’s right near the time where the game is getting ready to start.’

Thompson had his sport jacket buttoned, too.

‘He goes down to Looie, opens up his jacket and the place goes crazy,’ Riley says.

Rich Chvotkin, who was broadcasting the game for local television in Washington, D.C., with Bernie Smilovitz, remembers doing his opening and then turning around to see Thompson open the coat.

‘The whole atmosphere of the tension of that place just was kind of lifted,’ says Chvotkin, who still broadcasts Hoyas games today. ‘Like a camaraderie between Carnesecca and Thompson, as opposed to a tremendous adversarial relationship because he kind of likened himself to Looie.’

Carnesecca laughed, then Thompson turned to play to the crowd, revealing the replica of the sweater and a wide grin on his face.

‘I’m saying to myself, ‘That sweater ain’t lucky. Look, I got one, too,’ ‘ Thompson said in the documentary.

The Hoyas, the defending national champions, won 85-69 behind 20 points from star Patrick Ewing. They wouldn’t lose again until they fell 66-64 to Villanova in the title game.

They beat St. John’s two more times along the way, in the Big East championship and NCAA Final Four. At the Big East tournament, Carnesecca came out with a string of towels hanging over his shoulder and dragging on the floor as he walked toward Thompson.

It was all part of the friendly gamesmanship between the two coaches that could get chippy when the game began.

‘When they played, they had six guys, as opposed to five, because Looie stood on the court all of the time,’ Thompson said, ‘and because of the fact that he was short, nobody ever saw him. And I used to get on the referees all the time because the minute I crossed that line, they could see me. I said, ‘There he is. He’s there and is he a defensive man, too?’ ‘

Thompson got along with other iconic coaches in the league – Villanova’s Rollie Massimino, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, Seton Hall’s P.J. Carlesimo – but Riley said Thompson had a special affection for Carnesecca because ‘Looie was Looie.’

Carnesecca, who was more than a foot shorter, and Thompson were natural foils for one another. But the two were more similar than perhaps many realized. Both could be salty on the court, but when you met them off it, they were different.

‘Coach was always kind to people, especially young children and older people,’ Riley says of Thompson. ‘Always stopped for young people and for older people. He would always give them time. He would greet them because they were expecting what they saw on TV: Him growling at somebody or fussing about something. He said, ‘Well, that’s not me. That’s the perception of what people think of me. That is when I’m working, when I’m going into my job and what you guys write about me sometimes. I think when people see that, that’s what they expect.’ ‘

Sometimes perceptions, like pieces of clothing, don’t reveal the full picture. To get it, you just had to move a little closer.

‘You never just went out to St. John’s to interview Looie Carnesecca,’ New York columnist Mike Lupica wrote on social media when Carnesecca died. ‘You went to the house, and Mary would cook and the stories would begin and before long it didn’t matter what you’d come to talk about. One of the dear men in the history of sports. He made us all feel like family.’

The quarterfinals of the NBA Cup are set, but fans will have to wait until midweek for those games.

In the meantime, Thursday night presents an intriguing East-West battle between the Cleveland Cavaliers (19-3) and the Denver Nuggets (11-8). On Friday, now that the Milwaukee Bucks (11-10) have won nine of their last 11, they’ll have a huge test against the defending-champion Boston Celtics (18-4).

And then on Sunday, a pair of Western Conference teams that have stumbled recently – the Minnesota Timberwolves (11-10) and the Golden State Warriors (12-8) – face off in a chance to course correct.

Here are some takeaways from the sixth week of the NBA regular season.

The Warriors have lost five in a row. What has gone wrong?

Tuesday night, after Stephen Curry laced a short, spinning fadeaway from the right low block, Golden State held a six-point lead against the Nuggets with two-and-a-half minutes to play. The score was 115-109.

The Warriors would miss their next five shots, commit a turnover and fail to score another point before losing the game, their fifth in a row. In many ways, that stretch against the Nuggets was emblematic of the team’s issues during the skid.

Golden State has scored 107 points per game over its last five. During its first 15 games this year, that figure was 119.1.

During this losing streak, the team has posted a true shooting percentage, a mark of offensive efficiency, of 52.2%. That ranks 28th in the NBA in that span and is below the mark the 2-17 Wizards (52.8%) have posted.

This is magnified in the clutch. Each of Golden State’s five consecutive losses have been clutch games. Of the 24 teams that have attempted three or more clutch field goals over their last five games, the Warriors are dead last, shooting an abysmal 14.3%.

Coach Steve Kerr even called out Brandin Podziemski after Tuesday’s loss against Denver, for ‘frankly, insane’ decision-making errors.

The Mavericks, on the other hand, are surging

Dallas (14-8) is on an opposite trajectory. The Mavericks have won five in a row and nine of their last 10, surging all the way to the No. 3 seed in the loaded West. And they’ve done this despite having key players missing over this span.

While some of their opponents over their last 10 have certainly been weaker, the Mavericks have also taken down the Memphis Grizzlies (14-8), New York Knicks (13-8), Nuggets (11-8) and Oklahoma City Thunder (16-5). The key factor in the turnaround has been better ball movement.

During the first few weeks of the season, the ball often stagnated in Dallas’ offensive operation. To a certain degree, this makes sense; Luka Dončić, the anchor of the offense, is a ball-dominant player. But, Dallas is swinging it more, leading to increased off-ball movement, cuts and open kickouts.

In October, the Mavericks ranked last in passes per game (237.2). Over their last 10 games, that total has spiked to 282.3 per game, 19th in the league.

Scoring has correlated, accordingly. Dallas is averaging 122.6 points per game over its last 10 games, compared to 114.25 over its first 12.

Can we already call a winner in Knicks-Timberwolves trade?

The sample size remains small, but the indicators point to the undeniable: Karl-Anthony Towns has settled into a rhythm with the Knicks (13-8) – and the Timberwolves (11-10) miss his offense, badly.

New York is 8-2 over its last 10 and leads the NBA in offensive rating (123.6) in that span. This season overall, the Knicks offensive rating is 121, which is also tops in the league.

Compare that number to last season, when New York was still in the Top 10, ranking seventh in the statistic (117.3). An interesting marker is that, last season, the Knicks relied so heavily on second-chance points, whereas this year they are relying more on their traditional sets.

Towns, who is averaging 25.1 points and 13.1 rebounds per game, has eased a massive amount of pressure off of point guard Jalen Brunson, and their pick-and-roll actions have been lethal.

In Minnesota, meanwhile, Donte DiVincenzo’s numbers are down across nearly every offensive  metric, save for assists. He’s averaging 8.8 points per game on 35.6% shooting from the floor – including 33.1% from 3-point range – one season after posting a 15.5/44.3%/40.1% splits last season in New York.

Julius Randle’s numbers are similarly down, he has been an inconsistent fit, and star Anthony Edwards even voiced his frustrations recently, bemoaning Minnesota’s lack of connectivity, saying the Timberwolves had no identity and that they were ‘soft as hell.’

Jalen Johnson is emerging and Hawks are (quietly) competing in East

Although the East is nowhere near as tight as the West, the Atlanta Hawks (12-11) won their fifth game in a row Wednesday night and snapped Milwaukee’s seven-game winning streak in the process. They also won Group C of the NBA Cup.

The Hawks are doing it with depth. Atlanta is one of only three teams in the NBA – joining the New Orleans Pelicans, who have had a number of significant injuries, and the San Antonio Spurs – to have eight players averaging double figures in points. The Hawks have had six different players lead them in scoring in games this season: Trae Young, Jalen Johnson, Zaccharie Risacher, Clint Capela, Dyson Daniels and De’Andre Hunter.

Yet, while Young is just barely leading the team in scoring (20.7 points per game), the 22-year-old Johnson is emerging as a underrated star.

Johnson is putting up 20.1 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game, all of which represent career highs.

Daniels has also become a lockdown defender, leading the NBA with three steals per game. Risacher has found his shooting stroke and has occasionally popped off for big scoring nights. And the Hawks are finding ways to win, notably taking down the top team in the East, the Cavaliers, twice in three days on a home-and-away tilt.

Clippers are treading water. What will they look like when Kawhi eventually returns?

The Los Angeles Clippers (14-10) are seventh in the Western Conference and have proven to be a tough out so far, with two wins this season against both the Nuggets and the Warriors.

Yet, the Clippers are thriving on defense, ranking fourth in rating (107.9). Center Ivica Zubac has protected the rim and ranks fourth in the league in rebounds (12.2 per game) and guard Kris Dunn has clamped up opposing guards; since being inserted into the starting lineup Nov. 13, the Clippers have won eight of their last 12 games.

When Leonard eventually returns, Powell’s offensive responsibility and playing time should dip. Will he be relegated back to the bench? James Harden, whose 21.6 points per game represent his highest mark since the 2021-22 season, will also likely see his numbers decrease.

Major League Baseball’s 2025 Draft Lottery is set for Dec. 10 at the Winter Meetings in Dallas, with the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins having the best odds to land the No. 1 overall pick in the July draft.

Colorado and Miami each have a 22.45% chance to end up with the top selection, with the Los Angeles Angels (17.96%) and Washington Nationals (10.2%) the only other clubs with odds better than 10%.

The lottery assigns the top six picks in the draft before the seventh selection is decided by the original odds.

Despite finishing with the worst record in baseball history (41-121), the Chicago White Sox aren’t eligible for the 2025 lottery as a team that pays into revenue sharing and received a lottery pick last year. The Athletics are also ineligible as they receive revenue sharing and can’t have lottery picks in three consecutive drafts. Chicago can select no earlier than 10th and the A’s no earlier than 11th overall.

As part of your daily trading routine, you likely start the day by checking the news and stock prices to identify potential market opportunities. However, as you already know, news and price performance can only give you a snapshot context—a starting point for a much more thorough analysis.

Financial media often highlights the price performance of notable stocks, but understanding its significance is another matter. A single price snapshot doesn’t uncover trading opportunities, but analyzing price within the context of consistent movement can.

One way to get a comprehensive view of this context is using a MarketCarpets chart configured to display [Up Days] – [Down Days].

What is MarketCarpets’ Up Days – Down Days?

This indicator setting counts the number of days a stock moves higher, then subtracts the number of days it moves lower, during a specified timeframe. (It’s best to start with at least a 5-day change.)

Why use this indicator? It’s all about consistency, or finding stocks with consistent increases or decreases. For instance, a stock’s one-day jump tells you very little. From where did it jump? What was its price action in the previous days? What is its trend context?

A single day’s movement can be unreliable simply because it doesn’t say much beyond the current day. You’ll have to check the charts to get a broader context. Fortunately, you can save time and get an overview of all stocks using MarketCarpets’ Up Days – Down Days setting.

For example, look at what happened in the Technology Sector -> Software Industry on Wednesday (see image below). The stock that pops out immediately is Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), not only because of the size of its market cap but also the company’s overall significance in the tech industry and beyond.

FIGURE 1. MARKETCARPETS CHART OF SOFTWARE SET TO ONE-MONTH VIEW OF UP DAYS – DOWN DAYS. MSFT, up 9 days, is the largest stock by market cap in this segment.Image source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

If you hover over the square, you’ll get a small pop-up showing you MSFT’s chart. But we’ll take a closer look to drill down into the broader context of this MarketCarpets reading. MSFT has had nine up-days minus down-days over the last month, but what exactly does that mean, and does it present a tradable opportunity?

Let’s start with a daily chart of MSFT.

FIGURE 2. DAILY CHART OF MSFT. After being in a trading range for about four months, Is MSFT poised for a breakout?Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

Given Microsoft’s significance in all things “tech,” it wouldn’t hurt to get a breadth reading on the sector’s performance. To this end, the S&P Technology Sector Bullish Percent Index, $BPINFO (see magenta square), tells you that over 70% of tech stocks are exhibiting Point & Figure buy signals, which indicates cautious bullishness, as some stocks may be overbought.

MSFT’s sideways movement, a range that lasted nearly four months, coincided with negative buying pressure in the Chaikin Money Flow (CMF). But the current attempt to break above resistance at $440 is accompanied by a notable surge in buying pressure (see magenta rectangle in the CMF panel).

A bullish trader would likely enter a long position at a break of $440, set a stop loss at $425 (given the concentration of trading volume — see the magenta line and Volume-by-Price), and watch $466, MSFT’s all-time-high as a technical target price (fundamental targets will differ).

In contrast, let’s look at the worst performers using the same MarketCarpets view. You can do this by cycling through each sector on MarketCarpets to get a comprehensive view of which industries seem to be underperforming. Here’s what I discovered in the Investment Services industry within the Financial sector (see image below).

FIGURE 3. ONE-MONTH MARKETCARPETS CHART OF THE FINANCIAL SECTOR’S INVESTMENT SERVICES INDUSTRY. Among the big brokerages, Morgan Stanley (MS) appears to be one of the bigger underperformers.Image source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

If the MarketCarpets’ Up Days minus Down Days calculation indicates weakness or underperformance, it helps to look at the wider context of trend, momentum, and overall technical strength.

Morgan Stanley (MS) has experienced more down days than up days over the past month relative to its peers. Could this signal weakness weighing upon its share price? Let’s shift to a daily chart for a closer look.

FIGURE 4. DAILY CHART OF MORGAN STANLEY. A rounding top pattern can indicate a toppy stock, although it can bounce off the bottom of the pattern formation.

MS is forming a rounding top pattern coming off a wide gap following a flag pattern. A rounding top is traditionally considered a bearish reversal pattern (though it can sometimes do the opposite and bounce at the bottom of the formation, so watch out). If it breaks below $128, the bottom of the formation, it’s likely to find support at the 50-day Simple Moving Average (SMA) line or the most recent swing high point at $120.

Some traders might see this as a shorting opportunity (below $128), while others may see it as a buying opportunity (at $120, for instance). Whatever you decide might be the better way to go, it’s important to consider a few other mixed signals:

The stock’s technical strength, as measured by the StockChartsTechnicalRank (SCTR) line, is favorably bullish at 84, indicating that the current weakness might be setting up for a minor pullback. A break below 70 would indicate technical weakness. The CMF indicates that selling pressure dominates the stock’s momentum, indicating the possibility that the stock’s reversal may be more than a mere “breather.”

Whether MS is poised for a minor pullback or a larger reversal, you’ll gain clarity once the price reacts to the key levels, allowing you to make your move.

These are just a few examples of many stocks you might have found using the MarketCarpets’ Up Days – Down Days tool. Try it out yourself and create a ChartList with your top 5 to 10 stocks. This will help you track their performance and identify trading opportunities over time.

At the Close

Incorporating MarketCarpets into your daily trading routine can significantly enhance your ability to find trading opportunities at a near glance. The Up Days – Down Days indicator, in particular, offers valuable insights into consistency in near-term price trends, helping you focus on stocks with sustained upward or downward movements. Make this tool a part of your routine, and build a ChartList to monitor the stocks you find.
