2024

Browsing

The Santa Claus Rally may be iffy, but a 23.31% gain in the S&P 500 ($SPX) for the year isn’t too shabby. It was a stellar year in the stock market, especially for the top 10 weighted stocks in the S&P 500, and that’s worth making a toast as we close out 2024.

In terms of the performance of S&P 500 stocks, Palantir Technologies (PLTR), Vistra Corp (VST), and NVIDIA (NVDA) took the top 3 spots. But performance is just one measure, and there are several other benchmarks. One that’s worth considering is strength, and, as the year winds down, let’s look at which S&P 500 stocks ended the year as the technically strongest ones.

In the Sample Scan Library, if you run the S&P 500 Stocks under Predefined Groups and sort the results by the StockCharts Technical Rank (SCTR, pronounced S-C-O-O-T-E-R) from highest to lowest, PLTR takes the crown, followed by United Airlines Holdings Inc. (UAL) and then Tesla Inc. (TSLA). Let’s look at each of these stocks more closely.

PLTR Stock’s Ride to the Top

When PLTR’s stock went public in 2020, it was volatile — there was a lot of chatter about the stock in the media. But in 2022, the stock went through a slump. In 2023, it started showing signs of resurfacing, gaining strength, getting clobbered, and reviving itself before making its way to the top of the performance and strength category.

The daily chart below shows that PLTR’s stock price has had a SCTR score above 76 since early June 2024. During that time, the stock price stayed above its 50-day simple moving average (SMA), except for in August when it dipped below it for two trading days.

FIGURE 1. PLTR STOCK ENDED THE YEAR WITH THE HIGHEST SCTR SCORE. The stock has been in an uptrend since mid-2024.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

PLTR stock was up 340.59% for the year and ended the year with a SCTR score of 99.7.

UAL Stock Takes Off

Airline stocks, in general, were hit hard by COVID-19, and the recovery has been slow. However, the resumption of travel by US consumers in 2024 helped many airline stocks, especially UAL.

After trading relatively sideways from 2020 to mid-2024, UAL’s stock price started a steep ascent in mid-September 2024. It crossed above its 50-day SMA and has remained above it for the year, hitting its altitude and now cruising at that level with some turbulence (see daily chart of UAL).

FIGURE 2. DAILY CHART OF UAL STOCK PRICE. Since September 2024, UAL has ascended steeply and hit cruising altitude.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

The SCTR score has remained above 76 since September 16. UAL stock gained 134.34% in 2024 and ended the year with a SCTR score of 99.1.

TSLA Stock’s Wild Ride

TSLA is a stock that has been front and center in investors’ minds and is one of the most actively traded stocks in the S&P 500. The price gained traction towards the end of 2019 and, even though it had a rough 2022 and a pretty choppy 2023, TSLA’s stock has shown its might towards the second half of 2024 (see daily chart of TSLA).

FIGURE 3. TSLA STOCK’S A LITTLE CHOPPY. Although it has had its ups and downs, the stock rallied during the last quarter of the year.Chart source: StockCharts.com. For educational purposes.

Since the end of October, TSLA’s SCTR score has remained above 76 and the stock price has remained above its 50-day SMA. TSLA’s stock price gained 62.52% in 2024 and ended the year with a 98.4 SCTR score.

The Bottom Line

Will these three stocks — PLTR, TSLA, and UAL — remain strong in 2025? Be sure to add them to your ChartLists so you can keep an eye on their performance.

If the SCTR score remains high, consider adding positions when price pulls back and reverses with a follow-through. If the stocks show signs of weakening, it’s time to reevaluate. Identify which stocks are taking their place, analyze each one, and determine if adding the strong ones can add muscle to your portfolio.

Scanning for S&P 500 stocks with high SCTR scores is relatively simple to do in StockCharts. There are many other scans to explore in the Sample Scan Library. The nice thing is the scans are already built for you — coding skills are not necessary! It’s something to consider for 2025.

China was behind a ‘major’ hack of the Treasury Department, the Biden administration said Monday, gaining access to unclassified documents and the workstations of government employees.

After a year fraught with hacking across all government agencies, China experts say it’s time to get serious about thwarting adversarial espionage.

‘The latest intrusion should not come as a surprise. For too long, the CCP has paid no real price for its increasingly aggressive intrusions into our homeland and networks,’ Rep. John Moolenaar, R-Mich., chairman of the House China Select Committee, told Fox News Digital.

‘It is time for Congress and the incoming Trump administration to impose escalating costs to deter the CCP.’

It’s not yet clear what exactly the hackers were seeking. The Treasury houses sensitive data about global financial systems, as well as estimates about China’s ailing economy. It also carries out sanctions on Chinese companies, as well as those aiding Russia in the war on Ukraine.

‘Even though the Treasury says the Chinese only got unclassified documents, we’ve got to remember that a hack of the Treasury sends shudders not just across the U.S., but across the world. Countries rely on the dollar, can you rely on the stability of the American financial markets?’ said China expert Gordon Chang.

Treasury was notified by a service provider of the breach on Dec. 8, and all systems affected were taken offline. China called the accusation that it was behind the act ‘baseless’ and said it ‘consistently opposes all forms of hacking.’

Despite China’s denial, the Treasury insisted a Chinese state-sponsored actor was behind the attack. Chang suggested Xi may have intended to get caught to send a message to the world.

‘We can’t actually exclude the possibility that the Chinese wanted to be caught because they wanted to actually create uncertainty around the world. They wanted to show the world that the United States is not safe — their networks are not good, the Chinese control them at will.’

Just weeks ago, President-elect Donald Trump seemed to be making an attempt to smooth over relations with China with an invitation to President Xi Jinping for his inauguration. But the recent hacking attempt suggests such efforts might be futile, according to Chang.

‘American presidents had tried preemptive concessions to China for decades. They’ve not resulted in benefits to us. And the reason is because the Chinese don’t reciprocate them,’ he said.

Earlier this year, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s communications were intercepted by Chinese intelligence, just as she was making determinations about new export controls on semiconductors and other key technology. The same hacking group also targeted officials at the State Department and members of Congress.

And the Treasury hack comes just as the Biden administration is grappling with one of China’s biggest attacks on American infrastructure in history, dubbed Salt Typhoon.

A Chinese intelligence group infiltrated nine U.S. telecommunications giants and gained access to the private text messages and phone calls of Americans, including senior government officials and prominent political figures.

The Salt Typhoon hackers also gained access to an exhaustive list of phone numbers the Justice Department had wiretapped to monitor people suspected of espionage, granting them insight into which Chinese spies the U.S. had caught onto and which they had missed.

The onslaught of cyberattacks has prompted frustration — and raised questions — about cybersecurity and why America’s adversaries are able to penetrate U.S. government systems with regularity.

‘The American people should be angry at the Chinese for hacking us, but they should be outraged at our political leaders because our political leaders know what’s going on. They have the means to protect us, and they have decided not to do so,’ said Chang.

Last week, incoming national security adviser Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., suggested the U.S. needed to not only play defense but go on offense to the attacks.

‘We have to stop trying to just play better and better defense,’ he told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo. ‘We need to start going on offense.’

‘We need to start imposing consequences for those that are stealing our technology, spying on us, and now with a program called Volt Typhoon, is putting cyber time bombs on our critical infrastructure, like our water, our grid and our ports,’ Waltz said.

‘America can’t afford to just play defense on cyber anymore. We’ve got to go on the offensive and impose COSTS on those who are stealing our technology and attacking our infrastructure,’ he added on X.

Trump has proposed a 60% tariff on U.S. imports from China. Last month, the Biden administration issued its most stringent crackdown yet on China’s semiconductor industry with the intent of hindering its ability to develop AI for modern military uses.

A private plane reportedly carrying the Gonzaga University men’s basketball team nearly crossed a runway where another flight was taking off at the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), prompting a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigation.

Air traffic controllers halted the private aircraft operated by Key Lime Air as a second aircraft was taking off from the runway around 4:40 p.m. on Friday, the FAA said in a statement. Video of the close call showed the private jet stop just as a Delta plane made liftoff.

“When the Embraer E135 jet proceeded to cross the hold bars, air traffic controllers told the pilots to stop. The jet never crossed the runway edge line,’ the FAA statement said.

The FAA is investigating the situation, the statement added.

Key Lime Air Flight 563 was carrying the Gonzaga men’s basketball team, CBS News and the Los Angeles Times reported. According to FlightAware, the Key Lime plane took off Dec. 27 from Spokane International at 2:10 p.m. PST and landed at LAX at 4:20 p.m. PST.

USA TODAY contacted Gonzaga University and LAX on Tuesday but has not received a response.

Air traffic controller: ‘Stop, stop, stop’

During a livestream video feed of the incident, a controller can be heard saying ‘stop, stop, stop’ to the Key Lime plane.

‘Wow! In the years I’ve been doing this, I’ve never heard (an) ATC controller tell a plane to ‘stop, stop, stop,” plane spotter Kevin Ray, who created the YouTube channel where the video was posted, can be heard saying.

On Dec. 28, a day after the incident, Gonzaga played UCLA and lost to the Bruins 65-62.

Delta says that it was unaware of the FAA’s investigation into the incident.

‘Delta flight 471 operated as normal, and we are not aware of any communication from the FAA regarding this flight,’ the airline said in a statement. ‘We are cooperating with aviation officials on their investigation.’

For the second consecutive week, the 2025 NFL draft order was altered significantly and a new team took control of the projected No. 1 overall pick.

The New England Patriots leapfrogged the New York Giants in the pecking order after the Giants earned a 45-33 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. New York’s win, along with New England’s 40-7 shellacking at the hands of the Los Angeles Chargers, positions the Patriots to clinch the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft should they lose to the Buffalo Bills in Week 18.

Naturally, the Patriots’ climb to the top selection has shaken up mock draft projections everywhere. New England spent the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft on quarterback Drake Maye, and with the North Carolina product playing well in his first season, the Patriots aren’t going to spend the top selection on a quarterback.

That opens the door for prospects like Colorado’s Travis Hunter and Penn State’s Abdul Carter to draw consideration atop the draft. It also will create the possibility of a trade down should any quarterback-needy team, like the Giant or Las Vegas Raiders, fall in love with Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Miami’s Cameron Ward or even a high-upside prospect like Alabama’s Jalen Milroe.

How will the first round of the 2025 NFL draft shake out after these recent developments? Here’s a look at what NFL draft experts at USA TODAY Sports, The Draft Network, NJ.com and CBS Sports are predicting for the first round.

NFL power rankings entering Week 18 of the 2024 season (previous rank in parentheses):

3. Detroit Lions (2): Despite all the injuries, they’re on the verge of the first No. 1 playoff seed in team history. And regardless of the defensive health, this group is capable of beating anyone in a shootout – and most definitely so at Ford Field (though it’s also incumbent to note that the Lions are the first team to go undefeated on the road in four years). Could this be the year they finally break through for their first Lombardi Trophy?

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

5. Philadelphia Eagles (6): As QB Jalen Hurts continues navigating the concussion protocol for the newly crowned NFC East champs, let’s hope discretion is the better part of valor when it comes to 2,000-yard rusher Saquon Barkley, who’s 101 yards shy of the league’s single-season rushing record.

10. Washington Commanders (10): Of all of rookie QB Jayden Daniels’ insane numbers, consider this – he has five TD passes in the final 30 seconds or overtime of a game this season, which is two better than any other quarterback since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

13. Cincinnati Bengals (14): He almost certainly won’t win the MVP award, but that doesn’t mean that QB Joe Burrow hasn’t been the league’s most spectacular player in 2024. Here’s hoping he and his team overcome heavily stacked odds and get to show off in the postseason showcase.

16. Houston Texans (13): They may be AFC South champs for the second straight year, but they also look like a very inviting opening-round playoff matchup.

17. Atlanta Falcons (17): You have to wonder how this season might have been different if they’d gone to rookie QB Michael Penix Jr. earlier … or simply burned a few timeouts Sunday night.

25. New England Patriots (24): They’re currently projected to pick first in the 2025 NFL draft – a valuable commodity in any year, but especially so when you already seem to have a young franchise quarterback (Drake Maye) in the building.

Connecticut football coach Jim Mora has issued a stern warning to other schools about tampering with his players, saying he won’t hesitate to ‘pursue all avenues to hold you accountable.’

Two days after capping off the season with a win in the Fenway Bowl, Mora took to social media, claiming that some schools have ‘blatantly broken @NCAAFootball rules by tampering with our players in the last 24 hours.’

Coincidentally, star defensive lineman Pryce Yates – who won defensive MVP honors in the 27-14 victory over North Carolina – later Monday reportedly reentered the transfer portal after starting the past three seasons for the Huskies.

Yates, a redshirt junior from San Antonio, initially entered the transfer portal on Dec. 13, but withdrew a week later with a social media post saying he would be returning to the Huskies next season.

‘We are excited that we’ve built a program where coaches have to cheat to beat us and we will protect that program,’ Mora warned in his post on X. ‘Think hard before you tamper with our players.’

Mora guided UConn to a 9-4 record, the school’s first winning season since 2010 and its highest win total since 2007.

Have Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson done enough to win NFL MVP? Or can Joe Burrow snag the award away in the final week of the regular season?

Allen and Burrow seek their first MVP. Jackson could win his second in a row, and third overall – one more than Patrick Mahomes. It’s a three-man race for the league’s highest individual honor, and so much more is at stake.

Allen doesn’t need to play much for the Buffalo Bills in Sunday’s finale against the New England Patriots, who need a loss to earn the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Allen will start the game to preserve his streak of 114 consecutive starts, Bills coach Sean McDermott said Monday. Buffalo has already secured the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoff picture. There’s no need to risk injury before the playoffs. The only risk might be his elusive first MVP.

Allen may not have the passing stats Jackson and Burrow boast, but he has wins over the best two teams in the league (the Chiefs and Lions) this season.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Allen’s MVP dilemma? How much would his case be helped by destroying and gifting the No. 1 pick to his division rival?

“He will be out there for a very, very short-lived amount of time and then he’ll be off rather quickly,” McDermott said of Allen, who has started every game since his rookie season in 2018.

Jackson needs to play to help the Ravens clinch the AFC North against the Cleveland Browns. He leads the NFL in passer rating and QBR, while his 39 touchdown passes trail only Burrow (42).

Jackson’s MVP dilemma? How much will he be able to run up the score and his stats against the Browns, who could ensure a Top 3 pick with a loss.

Burrow has the quarterback stats, but seven one-score losses this season will leave their mark – even more if he fails to show out Saturday night.

Burrow’s MVP dilemma? He needs a standout performance to help the Bengals win on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Broncos (home vs. resting Chiefs) and Dolphins (at Jets) need to lose Sunday, too. If all that happens, Cincinnati would punch a ticket to the postseason.

At the very least, Allen gets to see what Jackson and Burrow do Saturday before taking the field Sunday.

Here are the USA TODAY Sports’ NFL MVP rankings after Week 17:

7. Eagles RB Saquon Barkley

Sunday, Barkley became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for more than 2,000 yards. He leads all players with 2,283 scrimmage yards, while only four players have scored more than his 15 touchdowns this season. The Eagles own the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoff picture.

6. Vikings QB Sam Darnold

Darnold is fourth in the NFL with 4,153 passing yards and fifth with 35 touchdown passes. The Vikings are 14-2 after their 27-25 win over the Packers last week, and still in contention for the NFC North title and No. 1 seed.

5. Lions QB Jared Goff

Goff is second in the NFL with 4,398 passing yards and fourth with 36 touchdown passes for the Lions, who maintained the top seed in the NFC after a 40-34 win over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday Night Football.

4. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes

Mahomes has 26 touchdown passes — far from his 50 touchdowns when he won MVP in 2018, and 41 when he won his second in 2022. But the Chiefs are 15-1, clinched the No. 1 seed and primed to three-peat as Super Bowl champions behind their star quarterback.

3. Bengals QB Joe Burrow

Burrow’s numbers are keeping him in the conversation: He leads the NFL with 4,641 passing yards and 42 touchdowns, despite the Bengals’ 8-8 record. But seven of their losses have come by eight points or less.

2. Bills QB Josh Allen

Allen accounted for three touchdowns in a 40-14 win over the lowly Jets. He has 26 passing touchdowns, 12 rushing touchdowns, and the second-best QBR behind Jackson. He became the first player in NFL history to throw three touchdowns and score three rushing touchdowns in a game. And wins over the Chiefs and Lions boost his MVP case.

1. Ravens QB Lamar Jackson

Jackson also accounted for three touchdowns, but did so against a playoff team during Baltimore’s 31-2 win over the Houston Texans last week. He should eclipse the 4,000-yard mark next week. His 39 touchdowns rank second behind Burrow. He leads the NFL in passer rating and QBR. He’s got wins over Burrow and Allen this season. But five losses have slightly hindered his case.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Detroit Lions completed their revenge tour Monday night.

They added the San Francisco 49ers to their list of vanquished teams – along with the Dallas Cowboys – that did them wrong the previous season.

With that unfinished business now finished, the Lions can look forward to something even better: a chance at a fairy-tale ending to the regular season.

Ukraine has received its first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the U.S., energy company officials confirmed this week— a positive development for Kyiv as it moves to ramp up its purchases of U.S. supplies and protect against broader supply concerns in the region.

Ukraine’s private energy company, DTEK, confirmed it has received some 100 million cubic meters of U.S. LNG in the shipment, which the U.S. shipped to an LNG regasification terminal in Greece.

The news comes after Ukraine’s DTEK inked a supply deal with U.S.-based LNG supplier Venture Global in June.

The DTEK contract is the first significant LNG contract to be struck between Ukraine and the U.S. and will allow Ukraine to purchase an ‘unspecificed’ amount of LNG from Venture Global through 2026. The companies also signed a separate 20-year agreement, in keeping with traditional longer-term LNG supply contracts.

The news comes just hours before Russian gas giant, Gazprom, is slated to halt all piped gas deliveries shipped through Ukrainian pipelines to other European countries, following the expiration of its five-year contract.

Ukraine itself does not purchase Russian gas supplies. However, the European Union (EU) remains heavily dependent on imported gas, including from Russia.

Even after the abrupt throttling of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, the EU depends on piped Russian gas for roughly 5% of its total gas imports— sparking fresh fears as to how the bloc might cope in the event of a supply emergency or colder-than-expected winter.

In the interim, Ukrainian officials said, they hope the additional U.S. supplies can help fill in the gap and help ease any near-term supply crises in the EU.

‘Cargoes like this are not only providing the region with a flexible and secure source of power, but are further eroding Russia’s influence over our energy system,’ DTEK CEO Maxim Timchenko said in a statement.

A Palestinian Authority (PA) official reportedly predicted that President-elect Donald Trump will ‘destroy Iran’ and that Tehran’s weakening will effectively break down the remaining Hamas terror cells.

Mohammad Hamdan, secretary-general of the PA’s ruling Fatah Party, reportedly made the comments to the New York Post on Dec. 19 during a meeting between the outlet and other top PA leaders in Nablus, about an hour south of the West Bank city of Jenin, where Western-backed PA forces have launched security operations against armed extremists aligned with Hamas this month.

The Post first reported the conversation on Monday.

‘We are confronting Hamas’ ideology. Our problem is with Hamas’ link to regimes outside Palestine,’ Hamdan told the Post, referencing Iran specifically.

‘We see that Trump and the ruling government in Israel are planning to destroy Iran, so Hamas [followers] will have no other choice than to become Palestinian,’ he added.

A group of more than a dozen extremists stole two PA vehicles and paraded them down the streets of Jenin while waving Hamas and ISIS flags on Dec. 6, according to the Post.

Since then, PA forces have killed at least three extremists in the West Bank town and have vowed to arrest or ‘eliminate’ the remaining people responsible.

Fatah suffered a major defeat in the 2006 election, resulting in rival Hamas seizing control of the Gaza Strip, hardening Islamic-extremist rule and launching repeated attacks on Israel.

The tipping point came when Hamas terrorists launched their coordinated attack on southern Israel from Gaza on Oct. 7, 2023, killing more than 1,200 people and taking more than 250 hostages.

As Israel has decimated Hamas in the Gaza Strip since then, the PA, which is backed by the U.S. and other Western governments, appears to be positioning itself to resume governance of Gaza once the war ends.

‘Hamas rejects international legitimacy, meaning UN resolutions,’ Hamdan said. ‘The world cannot accept a situation where a party does not accept international resolutions.’

Hamas and other Islamic extremist groups have sown distrust of the PA, accusing it of coordinating closely with Israel on past security raids on Jenin.

The Jewish state in the past has cracked down on Jenin, which has long been considered a terrorist stronghold. The PA security forces had until recently little presence there until its new security operations this month.

At least three PA security force members have been killed, including a captain in the intelligence services, during armed clashes with extremists, The Associated Press reported. The PA has arrested dozens of people.

The Post said the PA leaders they interviewed condemned Israel’s increased settlements in the West Bank but said they supported the Jewish state’s right to exist.

Hamdan also reportedly told the Post that PA President Mahmoud Abbas – who slammed Israel and the United States before the United Nations General Assembly earlier this year – ‘still supports realistic relations with the Americans in order to achieve the aspirations of the Palestinians.’ However, the secretary-general also argued that failed U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East was responsible for growing Islamic extremism.

‘Look what happened in Syria. First, the U.S. declared the rebels to be al Qaeda, and then [last week] an American delegation visited Syria,’ Hamdan told the Post. ‘And the one before that, when the Americans struck deals with the Taliban in Afghanistan. We as Palestinians believe that most of these extremist Islamic groups are produced by America by its effort to create a new Middle East.’

On the issue of post-war Gaza governance, one Israeli official told the Post that the PA remained an option but would need to stop ‘the corruption’ and ‘funding terrorism’ on Israeli settlers in the West bank.

The official acknowledged though that the PA could have ‘a historically unprecedented opportunity’ to return to its control of the Palestinian territories.

The PA’s opposition to Hamas could provide unique leverage to ‘participate in day-after talks,’ the Israeli official added.
